As a retired television production tech, my opinion of whomever does the editing of these videos is that he's pretty darn good at his job.

We were very good at changing gears on the truck, when we finished we had 5 reverse gears and one forward gear.

Retired mechanic here. Those rear ends require a spreader to spread the housing before doing any gear changes or bearing replacements. Those big holes on either side of the opening are there for the spreader. See if you can borrow one from a shop. The housing must be spread JUST the right amount before putting the new third member back in because it determines the pre-load on the carrier bearings, which is CRITICAL. Put the spreader in, put a dial indicator on one side of the housing and carefully spread the housing JUST the right amount (by the housing MFGR specs), re-install the third member then Blue-Chech the gear mesh. Check the book! You can't hack this up! You will blow up the rear end. Roger

Probably too late but Precision Transmission has a RU-vid channel that goes into great detail on assembling a rear end. It is complicated. They are good guys running a small local shop out of Amarillo. They know as much about transmissions as you do about recovery. You will enjoy watching Richard.

I didn't subscribe to this channel to watch a "build" show, but dang it, I'm enjoying these episodes. And I'll tell you why. It's like being a kid watching your old man and his friends work on the car. He'd say things like "I don't have the right tool for this, but we'll see if we can't make this work."

Hope you see this in with all the great comments - watch Matts Off Road and Fab Rats. had two Covid-19 (last two weeks) thoughts. First is the Corvair needs an off road tailor and Second Paul has the tools to build it. Now's when the good ideas go off the rails. 1) needs tandem axels 2) to be light 3) No solid axal / raised for Clarence 4) wishbone frame / axel width adjustable / travels narrow / meet load width 5) torsion bar suspension - Paul's channel is great but he need more subs so if on your channel you keep letting your subs see Paul's progress maybe we can build his base
