The number one question that we get asked is "how much does it cost the sail the World?". The same way that living in a house or an apartment, the cost of cruising depends on many factors, which of one major: the very boat that you sail.
In this 3 parts mini series, we answer the question “How much does it cost to cruise" on different boats, because different boats = different sailing budgets.
Generally speaking, you could divide the cost of cruising into 2 categories: The expenses related to owning and sailing the boat full time, and the living expenses. In these videos, we will solely focus on the expenses related to the boat.
We will compare the cost of ownership and the cost of cruising a McWester Wight 32ft Ketch from 1974, our Beneteau Oceanis 40 from 2007 and an Amel 54 from 2007.
In this first video, we take a closer look at Marky Warren's boat, a 32 foot MacWester Wight Mk2 from 1974 named Roamer.
Before diving in the costs, Marky Warren gives us a boat tour of his sailboat, tells us about the level of comfort she offers and how it is to live and sail her full time.
We then dive in the market value of the MacWester Witght 32 ft ketches, the annual cost of maintenance, the monthly marina budget and fuel as well as the cost of insurance.
Hope you find it helpful!

Here in the Netherlands you can finance a ship with a mortgage. The boat is then same like a house. I bought a new ship of 34 feet. Outof the box, delivered from the factory, complete with all the options like navigation, heqting etc etc. I pay a monthly 250 euros, loan is about less than 2 percent interest. Harbour costs 1000 euros a year, all included (power,water etc).

Ryan & Sophie Sailing You can also use this facilities when the ship is located in Netherlands. Many germans use this facility. The ship is the back up for the bank. The ship is registerd in the Netherlands by a notary sollicitor. You can use mortgage for 20 to 40 years, annuity payment. With the low interest its almost free money.

Which bank does that? As far I know, Dutch banks don't do 2% mortgages on boats, only for houses... For boats the interest is much higher!

9 years ago, my wife and I made an atlantic circle for 16 months, on a 30ft sailboat. The 16 month cost about 25000€ , including the lower selling price after owning the boat for 7 years, and the cost for a little flat storing all our things at home. The daily life costs the same as on land. We had no watermaker, a hundred liter tank for water and another 150 liters stored in cans and bottles. wenever there was a possibility, we filled all our water cans and the tank. We had 14 black 5l cans for our water, putting two of them exposed to the sun made our hot shower water nearly every day. Electronics have been two handheld GPS Garmin 72 and a radar warner. The luxury on board was a 40l compressor cooling box, powerd by 200W solarpanels and an SSb radio to recive weather forecasts every day.

For my solo transatlantic in the late 1990s I had a 27ft Verl monohull which I paid £5750 for and then added about £8000 worth of upgrades. On the way I was very glad of my radar proximity alert which woke me up more than once to warn me of a boat heading straight at me. No response to calls out on VHF. It is almost impossible to keep waking up every ten minutes to check the horizon and single handers do need sleep.

10000 Euros on maintenance a year is a lot, I used around 3500 Euros in 2018 included Insurance, boat space, renovated sails, renovated sprayhood, renovated boat bottom, crane for launching, engine parts, fuel and so. Sailing full time is of course more expensive than sailing for fun so looking forward to see the next video regarding expenses :)

I think like you , I have a 30ft catamaran located in greece, it costs me about 4000€ a year, standing in the boatyard for 8-9 month, insurance and maintanance included
@tedthesailor172
@tedthesailor172 5 лет назад
I agree. That's basically £10,000 Sterling and I've seen 32ft Macwesters in sailaway condition go for far less. I think maybe because of his inexperience this guy bought a vessel that had been severely neglected, because for £10k you could completely refit an old banger like that to a standard which would last a decade. And goodies need not be so expensive; I got a fully functional Raytheon radar with radome, screen and all wiring for £175 secondhand. You can get a Chinese 3kw diesel heater for less than £150 (compared to £1000 for Eberspacher). A new gas water heater can be had for less than £80, so there's no excuse for going without a hot shower. If you indent primary maintenance issues like re-rigging, sail wardrobe, engine overhaul, re-wiring etc into the gross purchase budget, then barring major unexpected disasters (like dismasting) ongoing maintenance, costs can be limited to a few hundred pounds a year on a 10metre vessel. Though you obviously need plenty of spares, good tools, and a multi-tasking practical ability to avoid boatyard rates. I've found that wise capital investment at the outset can save substantial outgoings down wind.

Marky, I admire you for living such a "getting back to basics" lifestyle. I'm not saying I could, or would want to, do that; but I admire you. I'm more of the Amel 54 type of guy, though I'd want to get into an Amel for a lot less than 500 Euros. There are some Amel 39' Sharks that typically are offered for sale at the $75K price, and Amel 52' Mangos that are offered around the $110K, and even Amel Maramu offered at the $250K price point. All of those Amels are older boats and usually need full upgrades, but then again, any 10-15 year old boat typically need lots of upgrades, new electronics, sails, appliances, batteries, etc. as well. So a boat similar to one of these offers true blue water capabilities, yet with a blank canvas to upgrade the boat with the systems that the new owner wants. That's the idea that keeps me interested. New Amels are a fortune, and as Scott said, even his gorgeous Amel 54 that cost 500K Euros to purchase, still requires 30+ hours a week in maintenance time, though I think I read in the 3rd video that the 5,500 Euro maintenance cost number was inaccurate. Still, that's incredible! This was a fun series to watch. Thanks Sophie and Ryan! I'll add one more little thought. On the 2nd video of the series, the video of the Oceanis 40', you discussed the # of days at seas vs. the # of days at anchor/dock. My only comment is that I'd want to be completely comfortable and safe while at sea. And that's where yachts like the Amels, Oysters, Hallberg-Rassys, etc. really differentiate themselves from the pack, but then again, they cost many more times more than a "production yacht" such as a Oceanis 40'. As you said, it's all about balance, and personal preference! Well done, thank you!

It would've been interesting if it still had the Loran-C navigation equipment from the 70's... Of course such electronics would take up a lot of room.
@wanambi8553
@wanambi8553 5 лет назад
You cut a very individual theme. A lot of costs "depends on". Mostly you don't need the latest electronics, you can fix a lot of thing by yourselves, Of course it's al a question of ability. On the other hand, if you got to a low cost adventure, you have to do this. Very often you tips from others which drive you in costs and often you see after a while that there is no need for this stuff. 150 Litres of water would not be enough for my opinion - but ist my opinion other live with it without missing something. What I got as the best senior official is, "If you have the boat the costs under way are equal than the costs you have at home". Means, if you use to went in restaurants, cinema… you will (and have to) do this on the trip. If you spend 500 or 1000 or 1500 or 2000 Euros a month at home you do it as well while you sail. Thea real additional cost are mostly fees for migration or fees for the Panama Channel. But on the other hand you will have no costs while you at sea. All this works only if you don't have the need to eat the food you know from home but eat what people eat where you are. Fair winds Tom
@MikeSantis
@MikeSantis 5 лет назад
I agree Tom. It is really very individual. It all depends so much on the kind of person you are. One man's luxury is another man's need. And the same goes while living on land. Speaking for my self living on land right now, I'm glad to say that most of my friend's needs, are luxuries for me. Like eating out, cinemas, nice car, expensive holidays, often spend money on new cloths, new smart Tv etc. And that makes it easier for me to matetialise my dream to sail off. I know of people delaying their sail off dream cause they want to save enough so they won't be missing out on for example having the chance to eat out while cruising, being able to upgrade to new and modern equipments, or a bigger dinghy with bigger motor etc. In my world, it is ridiculous! Life is too short to wait!

With negative interest rates a new boat loan should not cost a lot, make a video about boat loans. After the boat is delivered, you'd need to get some cash flow to finance the running cost. With access to internet, that should not be a problem.

Can a under 10 meter boat cross oceans safely? Another question for everyone, what's the insurance if they sail off to some offbeat cruiser destinations like Blacksea coast.

Size has little to do with safety :) A well maintained, equipped and skippered 10 meters boat will be a lot safer than a 20 meters poorly maintained boat skippered by an unexperienced sailor. Last I've heard, someone is crossing the Atlantic in a barrel. www.cnn.com/2018/12/27/europe/barrel-atlantic-crossing-scli-intl/index.html For the insurance cost... I don't know! But I know that insurance in the Med is a lot more expensive than on the Atlantic coast because of the charter boats. Yep :) /Sophie
