No matter how long ago, their screams of pain echo on and will so forever more. The horrors committed on that ground. Blood and bodies disappear with time but I truly believe that places, land, and items can be tainted when around such raw negative emotions... (As well with positive emotions) and that it was not one girl, nor ten, but hundreds I can't imagine I only hope.. I wish with all my heart that some place exists beyond the veil of our mortal scope. A place where these girls are, happy, without fear, at peace. Such great suffering, any end to it would be a gift but they deserve better than an eternal black and I want them to have that.

My Hungarian grandfather first told me about Elizabeth Báthory as a kid, and of course Count Dracula. He was from Transylvania when it was still Hungarian and “visited”her castle in Slovakia at night. Pretty spooky. Having a Hungarian Halloween every year with him was fun. RIP Grandpa László.

Other countries like the Byzantine Empire, the Bulgarians and the Hungarians have stood up against the Ottomans before Vlad Tepes, though in the end everyone failed sooner or later. But Wallachia could only stop Ottoman expansion until the end of the reign of Vlad Tepes, while others like Hungary resisted them from Sigismund of Luxembourg (1387) up until the battle of Mohács (1526), which is a lot longer.

Actually, Gilles likely didn’t do the crimes he was accused of. There isn’t much proof of him mass kidnapping, torturing, raping, and sacrificing kids. The “proof” was all admitted under torture and pretty much all of his possessions went to his accusers. It’s not much of a stretch to think he was set up.

It only became Slovakia when we lost the first world war and were forced to give up our territory. Back in those days slovaks where happy with there position inside the kingdom of Hungary, they never wanted to revolt and the hungarians liked them. They were part of the population, only the czechs wanted them to join there country and betray Hungary.

It is important to note that she was a Protestant in an catholic empire (Habsburger monarchy) and extremely wealthy. During the winter she lived in Vienna (capital of the Habsburger empire) where some accusations came up. The house were she lived still exists (Google "Harnischhaus Wien"). She inheareted everything from her husband (the black knight) and therefore many relatives and the staff were envisous. These people made some of the accusations during the trial in which she was never questioned. This was somehow also her luck since royal people were not allowed to be tortured. But three of her servants (Dorothea, Ficzko) were brutaly tortured and only under this pain they came up with Bathorys brutal crimes (from there the number 37 originates, the documents of the trial still exist). Her diary where she wrote about 650 killed girls was very likely not written by her. It was probably a hoax to prove her guilt. So it is quite likely that she was the victim of calumny. Mistreating and punishing servants was completely normal and even allowed by law.100 years after the trial a catholic monk wrote about Bathory, he was the one who called her "blood countess" and came up with the blood baths. Elizabeth Bathory: A Romanian Serial Killer and Noblewoman who was absolutely convinced that the blood of young women had a rejuvenating effect on her. Lady Bathory, along with Vlad the Impaler were the inspirations for vampires. Romania definitely had some pretty scary nobles ruling it back in the day.
A few years ago I was even smaller and I was in Hungary In a waxy museum and this woman was also on display where someone is bleeding over her bathtub And back then it was so scary for me that I had nightmares about it
