Love this video and installation Josh. One quick question though. You said you were putting in a 200wh battery. That seems awful big 2560wh? That is like 10 times more power than you’ll ever need. Am I missing something here?
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 5 месяцев назад
so, here's why. I spoke with the rep from strainrite and asked him about the power output of this, and told him my exact plans, they recommended I consider a 100Ah battery...so I went a little overboard and got the heated 200Ah battery for peace of mind. So...it's overbuilt, but we have a massive amount of power storage which is key. It's actually only 4 times the size recommended 50Ah v/s 200Ah my brotha

Those Nemtek energisers are the longest lasting units I have used. The remote is RFID like your fancy phones, you configure the settings on the remote LCD then place the remote near the front of the unit and it updates the energiser with the settings. You hardly use the remote after your fence is set up and working, its more of a security thing so nobody can tamper with the fence, and let your wild animals out. The warning light usually flashes if there is a short on the fence. The guys that make these energisers make serious gear, the Agricultural products are probably the tamer part of their product range.

Hey Josh. Maybe to late now but I added switches around the paddocks normally near gates so that I could isolate just one area without shutting the whole fence down. Great if a tree comes down or something and you cant clear it straight away. Also I ran the insolated wire in the ground through Alkathene pipe for extra protection under the gateways, also a good insulator. Just loop the ends over so it cant fill up with water.

The slot on the bracket on the back is for a T post. I always attach the ground steak to the fence. It helps spread the ground for long runs in dry weather. You have steel fence post witch will add to the grounding.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 5 месяцев назад
While I can appreciate what you are saying here, It's honestly best to have a stand alone ground rod my friend. I do ground my portable fencing chargers to the actual fence but here's why that's not good for permanent. LIGHTNING RISK....think about this...if I ground it to the entire fencing system, there's a much much higher chance of lightening striking and feeding down the fenceline v/s a single ground rod system. Now...I didn't just pull this idea out of thin air....I'm a trained electrician and lineman by trade, lightning hits metal and will fry everything attached to it. Hence the reason transformers and some switch gear is grounded individually at the poles. Make sense brother....I totally hear ya, but lightning only has to strike anywhere on the farm near the fence to fry this system v/s one single ground rod driven to depth right beside the fence charger
@TheCritterWindow
@TheCritterWindow 5 месяцев назад
So a one in a million lightning strike verses no or weak fence power far from the ground stake. How many miles of wire from the ground? Every fence post is a ground steak. I understand your point but this seems like a risk/reward subject.@@StoneyRidgeFarmer

I agree, out of the weather is best. I like this set up, it’s advanced enough to be really functional, but not way overdone with all kinds of crazy features and extra stuff to break. A question question I have is how hot does that unit get, is that being closed up like that with the unit right on top of the battery going to be an issue in the summer? I love the idea of the self Heating battery, that’s pretty awesome. I wonder how much energy it takes to keep it warm 🤔
@robertschumacher472
@robertschumacher472 5 месяцев назад
Might want to check the heat inside during the summer when it gets hot. I know the box is plastic, indirect sunlight it could heat up and cause issues with the fence charger. If the box is waterproof and are proof that might want to swell and Shrink with heat if so you might have to put a vent in it that has a filter in it that keeps most of the moisture from getting in. I think I might have went with a different battery meter. If that is like most lithium-ion that has a pretty flat discharge curve and then at the very end drops off suddenly. You have to have a really accurate voltage reading and know the curve to see where it's going to go out on you at. You probably looked it up already. Take care of yourself and be glad your cows don't have horns

@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 5 месяцев назад
I've found that anything that moves like that doesn't last. if the solar panel gets damaged then the battery has enough charge to run this fence for probably a month, plenty of time to get a new solar panel up for charging. Wind systems are cool....but moving parts wear and break

You will need a switch rated for the voltage of the shock voltage usually 20000 volts if not it can just jump internally through the switch. Also with a metal switch you will want to ground the switch to the ground post so when it does jump it doesnt shock you. Just some advise.

barbed wire is great.....woven wire is better....it's just that simple. How many infections, cuts, hardware disease and other disparities have been created by barbed wire my brother. I'm not arguing that barbed wire will suffice.....but we chose to not use t-posts and barbed wire on our farm. It's about personal choices my friend...1 330 ft roll of wire is about $500. 5 or 7 strands of barbed wire with all the connectors is probably 30cent cheaper per foot. We chose net wire for the farm....neither would be wrong though ...would you agree?

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I know some people who just run three wires of hot fence. I guess it depends on one's budget. I've never experienced any deep cuts from barbed wire on my cattle. Then again , no fence will stop a 1,000 - 2500 lb bovine of its needs are not met. I've heard of bulls plowing through all types of fence to get to a cow in heat. It also depends on breed of cattle. Some breeds are more aggressive than others. Good luck with your hotwire. The only downfall to hot wire is grounding out or a down electric grid or bad battery. Like any fence, they all require maintenance. I'm regularly removing large trees off my fence and having to splice and retitening it.
