I thought there would be a really cool opportunity that could have been taken advantage of while the team is on a university campus to sell the game to students with cheap tickets. You'd lose more money, sure, but the building would be an absolute riot night in, night out and I think could help foster interest in the team.

For less than a ticket in Arizona, I did the flight package the Canucks used to offer. Flight from Victoria to Vancouver, transfer to the arena, lower bowl ticket and a flight home the same night. I think it was like $250

Yeah, the Coyotes management is insane if they think their pricing is going to fly. I am in the Tampa area and go to 10+ regular season home games a year. Usually costs $100-150 for good seats, lower level center ice. Season tickets for lower level center ice are around $5-6K, and that is for your back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champs. I sit lower level center ice at Bolts playoff games routinely for 200-300, and had phenomenal seats for a Cup game last year for around 400/ticket. I lived in Phoenix 10-15 years ago. There were no hockey fans there, no one cared about the sport, and the Coyotes have only hurt their brand more since then. No way a Phoenician is going to spend $100+ for a regular season ticket to a team that perennially sucks. Every night will be "broke ASU student special night" $15 tickets just to get some bodies in the place. Poor Coyotes have been run into the ground.

OK. First, I'm a full STM to the LA Kings and the Arizona Coyotes. I just renewed for a full season to the Yotes in the new arena at ASU. I'd like to think I did some research here before I pulled the trigger, especially since I'm not a local resident. 1. Morals clauses are not unusual for business or ASU deals. 2. The Yotes will be permitted to have their logo on the ice. However, the ASU pitchfork will remain and cannot be covered for TV broadcasts. 3. A pricing map was sent to each of us STM's before the selection window opened for us. The selection priority was done on a combination of seniority and $$ amount spent on season tix. I was about at the 55% percentile of being in line. The richest/most senior would be the 1%, the newest/lowest would be 99%. 4. My season rep confirmed what I had seen. The Yotes raised the ticket prices AFTER the process started. Why? Probably b/c there was a large demand for tickets. 5. Furthermore, when it came to be my turn, I could see which seats were available in green. The white seats were not available. Guess what, most of the bigger $$$ seats were in white. An occasional single green seat was available down low. This would support that sales are brisk. There was much more white than green on the live map when it came to be my time.. 6. My season rep also confirmed that full STM's will only be able to sell 12 games a year in the secondary market. Half plans will only be able to sell 6. 7. Most of the arena where the Yotes shoot 1 out of 3 periods did not have any seats available at all. I cannot confirm, but have heard, that those will be available to ASU students at a discounted price and will be non-transferrable on whatever app they have. 8. The lower bowl only has 11 rows, which is pretty much the entire stadium save for a few premier boxes up top.

ASU has one of the largest campuses in the US, so they may be banking on some rich college kids being able to buy tickets at the spur of the moment. They might be more likely to go than your typical snow-bird or retired senior citizen that is very common across Arizona.

The issue with these ticket prices is it makes it extremely hard to attract new fans. I have no doubt the arena will sell out when the Coyotes play well established teams (rangers, leafs etc) but the whole point of keeping this team in Arizona was to "grow the game". If any national media covered anything positive about the Coyotes, you would know that isn't going to be the case. Through their foundation and partnerships with equipment companies, they have provided street hockey equipment to almost every elementary school in the Valley, and they replace equipment for free if it breaks. They have done clinics for PE teachers to help them teach skills to their students. They spend a lot of time in the community (the last two years of Covid not withstanding) visiting Boys' and Girls' clubs, Chicanos por La Causa after school programs, etc. Their alumni group and other NHL players retired in the Valley (and there are a lot of them), serve as volunteer coaches for both learn-to-play and Junior Coyotes programs. And that is not even getting into the Arizona Kachinas, the girls' hockey program. Thanks to the efforts of Olympian and Arizona native Lyndsey Fry and the late Matt Schott, participation in girls' hockey is growing faster in Arizona than any other state in the country. The Skatin' for Leighton event, which honors a Kachinas player who died from cancer at the age of 9, has raised over $150K over the past two years for girls' learn to play programs and scholarships for equipment, ice time, etc, so lower-income girls can continue to play the sport. Oh, and the 19U, 16U, and 14U Kachinas all finished second in the country this year, and the 19U team had its first Division I college commits.

two months into this season, the Yotes will be trying to paper the house with $20 tickets when they see the abysmal attendance. What they should do is what the Lightning did when they had a new owner in the 90's, they made every lower bowl seat a $1000 season ticket. Sold out in a heartbeat. Their entire plan was to fill the house no matter what and then raise prices once they had their crown. It worked.

Fun fact: I currently pay about $110 per game at Gila River. My new tickets will be about the same price. Where I'm actually saving money is that I don't have to waste gas to drive two and a half hours round trip to Glendale (not to mention the time I'm going to save and the mileage and wear and tear on my car). I think where the numbers are getting wonky on this is people aren't factoring into the equation that every seat is lower level and close, so you're losing all those cheap seats on the second level or the ones that are 20 rows back or whatever on the lower level. Also worth noting, the move to Tempe puts the team a stone's throw away (literally) from Scottsdale which is one of the wealthiest places in the country. I have a feeling that these tickets become a luxury item due to the exclusivity and the limited availability and that draws in an entirely new crowd that can afford these seats and will probably start to use them as a status symbol. I personally can't wait for these games. I think they're going to be once in a life on time opportunity, they're going to be rowdy and they're going to be a ton of fun. It's going to be like watching Metallica play in a sports bar.

Couple of things to correct: 1. The season ticket prices don't include the "bleacher" student section that is being reserved for ASU students. We don't know how much those will cost yet. 2. In terms of the good behavior clause, as an Arizona State University alum. I can assure you, that the good behavior clause is in every single contract that ASU makes with any outside entity. This is not a weird thing that was put in for the Coyotes. The center ice thing, it just says ASU controls whats at center ice, not that ASU logo is exclusively at center ice. The verbiage only states Coyotes can not CHANGE it. My understanding from what I've heard is that ASU and Coyotes have already agreed to have both logos at center ice.

As a yotes fan and ASU grad, I'm kind of bummed about the ticket prices. That being said, I'm absolutely furious about the constant misinformation being put out by Strang et al. There is no "good behavior" clause specific to the Coyotes, these are standard contract terms, especially for a university. Also, the contract says that the Coyotes can't alter what ASU puts at center ice, but it has been confirmed that both ASU and the yotes will be represented in the logo. Are we ever going to address the egregious false reporting around the Coyotes, or are we just all okay with this? Should we AZ fans just accept forever being outcast from hockey culture? It's pathetic. Please refer to Craig Morgan's reporting if you want the actual details.

Hard to compare the "cheap" seats at the new arena to any other arena even lower bowl in a nhl arena is like 25 rows deep but the ASU one will be like 10.. and steeper so just geometry says that the worst seat in the house is probably a pretty good one. At most arenas I would expect to pay 100 bucks or more to get in the first 10 rows. Obviously you do cut off access to people that would be willing to go to a game for 50 bucks and sit a mile away from the ice but you have a LOT more money in the Scottsdale/Tempe/Mesa triangle than over in Glendale. I think they are gonna do pretty well with ticket sales, you will have a lot more people that are interested in seeing a game and willing to pay 100 bucks but didnt want to spend 3 hours driving to the game in Glendale.

Reading through the comments it's clear to me a lot of you have no idea what is going on in Arizona. Being a lifetime Arizona resident and long time hockey fan, let me try to clear things up a bit. 1. The future of the Coyotes in Arizona depends on the new arena proposal for Tempe. They won't discuss that in earnest until probably later this summer at the earliest. Yes the ticket prices are a steep rise, but that was expected with a move like this. Coyotes owners have to be calculated with a situation like this. I will guarantee the Coyotes will have sellouts when Chicago, St. Louis, Minnesota, Detroit, Boston, NY teams, Phily and maybe Washington come in. Possibly Colorado. The tough sells will be, and always have, Nashville, LA, Anaheim, San Jose and the southern US teams. Most Canadian games will sell out as well. There's just large fan bases for all of my noted sellouts in Phoenix not to sell out. To the people thinking the team will move, we've heard that every year for the last 20 years. The decision to move this team will be Meurello's, or if he sells it too obviously. No one else will force his hand. Also, the Coyotes paid ASU in advance for this move. That's been well documented. Auston Matthews is from Arizona and lives here in the offseason. He was a Coyotes fan growing up. If you think there's no chance he plays here, with a chance to be the face of his favorite team, you would be wrong. The good behavior clause is a staple for ASU and not some special Coyotes thing. Finally, Craig Morgan is the authority on anything Coyotes, follow him on the socials. The Athletic has already proven their worth with anything Coyotes and it's pretty worthless, including this latest "piece." Hope that helps.

Then when the Whale moved to Hartford the arena wasn't completed yet so they played the first part of the 1974-75 season at the Eastern States Coliseum in West Springfield, Massachusetts (My high school graduation was held at that Coliseum, the ice plant is long gone though). Boston Garden could hold about 15,000 people. Matthews Arena held about 4,666 people. Big E Coliseum held about 6,000 people. I'm willing to bet this wasn't the only time this happened in the WHA days.

The whole Arizona / ASU thing does feel WHA-ey or otherwise bush league ish. Matthews Arena was used by the Bruins back from their expansion season in 1924. Nice that it's kept going in some capacity all the way to this day.

@@patch8376 Matthews Arena is also the only arena for ice hockey left that was used by an Original Six franchise. It's also the oldest multi purpose athletic arena in the world.

I went to a couple of Blues games this season (Habs and Ducks back to back) in the 9th row for less than $40 each. Expecting people to pay way way more than that for Coyotes tickets is insane.

Earlier this month, I took a friend to a Stars playoff game (game 3 vs Calgary and also his first playoff game) and we paid just under $50 (with tax and fees) to sit at the very top row. I still can’t believe how this team keeps being dragged through the mud like this but I also see why it hasn’t moved to Houston yet. I just don’t see the hunger in Houston to want to have a NHL team outside of the Rockets owner eager to purchase the Coyotes whenever the team is forced to sell, even though I would like to see the NHL in Houston.

NHL: If Calgary doesn't get a new arena we might move the arena. Also NHL: Let's play in a Mickey Mouse arena in Arizona.

Difference is that Calgary is attempting to blackmail the local government into giving them a brand new arena at taxpayer cost. Coyotes new arena in Tempe (after the temporary ASU deal) is already fully funded by the team owner.

$14350 * 5450 seats = $78M + change. So even if they sold at the highest price for every seat, they wouldn't make the cap....

Tampa bay lightning have a deal called student rush where empty seats are sold at $20 to college students before game (they’ve been doing this for at least 10 years). I don’t think students would have been into the team over the last 10 years if the bolts had bad teams. Point is that the coyotes team sucks too much for anything to work.

This could have been an amazing thing. Build a core base of fans, students and locals. Create the best barn in the NHL in terms of atmosphere and team spirit. Student culture, local families going out for a unique experience. 3 years from now, upsize the arena, bring that same spirit in. Make a full section that's named after this rink. You'd have an incredible fanbase that would feed itself. Now, you're just stuck with the same hockey fans going again and again
