Would love to see coverage of the gentleman who, after being paralyzed for a dozen years after a bike accident, recently underwent an experimental procedure where doctors essentially connected his brain and spine with bluetooth, reimplementing his ability to walk, move, and feel across his body. While he isn’t running marathons just yet, it’s so cool to see science giving him back so much, especially after so long!

Coincidentally, I was just rereading “How many neurons does it take to change a lightbulb?”, an article posted by Kevin Mitchell on his blog. Here’s what I’ve gleaned from it: A general way to think about the evolution of neural networks is that it started with a straightforward stimulus-response mechanism and gradually developed from there. However, there is a question about whether this is accurate. According to an alternative hypothesis, neurons emerged from cells that already performed many of the functions neurons do. The real adaptation was primarily in the morphology of the cell, i.e., the axons and dendrites. According to this idea, it's not so much about a stimulus-response circuit, but rather about coordinating the movement of large groups of cells. It is not about the specific computations of individual neurons (Sherringtonian view), but rather the global dynamic patterns of large groups of neurons (Hopfieldian view).
