A memorable and great movie. I loved Tatiana Samoilova’s play . I saw this movie in 1958 in my home Town Rasht, Iran which is near the Caspian sea and 7 hour with a steam boat to Russia. It took a while for this movie to be translated to farsi and be played in the local Theatre. It cost me 10 cents to buy a ticket and watch it carefully. I still remember the marching music for draftees going to tbe war. It was so sad to see that he got killed so quickly . They were so in love and met each other with passion . Even though it is very hard to understand Russian language but her singing and movement leaves a sweet memory in your mind. Uncle David- Houston

I agree, one of the essential films about the war and what it did to young people. This is as powerful as "Ashes and Diamonds" or the Finnish classic "Unknown Soldier" and a very bold film at the dawn of the post-Stalinist thaw. Wonderful acting, direction and not least amazing cinematography. The scene of Boris' death is one of the most powerful and resonant death scenes in all of cinema, expertly crafted and played and...one that really hits you in the gut, especially seen in the theatre.

Spectacle inoubliable ! The Cranes are Flying, is the first Russian motion picture I saw during a projection at my great grandmother music studio. At Thirteen yo, I was very impressed with the projector's mechanics, the reels, the lens, the light, la pellicule et bien sûr, la magie. At this precise moment I became addicted to Cinéma. My great grandmother, her father and three siblings, left Imperial Russia, at the beginning of the last century to settle down in Montréal. Noblesse oblige !

Bonjour Michel.

THIS FILM is enchantingly beautiful from the very start. My jaw has been dropped the whole time and already (20 minutes in) it feels sore LOL. The Cranes are Flying is like viewing Rome Open City (yah, it's that good!) but with mind-bending camera work which reflects, first, what one sees in a film like "Green for Danger" (I have in mind the scene when Mark rapes Veronika during the bombing). Second I think we see reflections of French masterpieces like "400 Blows" and the closing scene of "Rififi" when Veronika is running faster and faster (before she saves little Boris). And all the fast-moving side-panning camerawork that follows her (and to a lesser extent Boris) through unimaginably thick crowds of people (remarkable!) features every human emotion under the sun. It's in Rosselini's second film of the venerated war trilogy, Paisan, when a viewer goes to the front of the hot war, I believe (haven't yet seen it, I confess, but Rome Open City is one of my absolute favorite films). But the point is that you have that here, too, in Kalatozov's masterpiece: he gives the viewer an authentic sense of the front and what Boris experiences before his terrible demise. Then we move right back to Veronika's world. But what was I saying? Ah yes, all those whirling images going by kaleidescopically, whether running or in a train, say. How this movement enhances the tremendous vulnerability of the protagonist in all these examples is perfection with a capital PERFECTION. =) I also feel that it gives the film as a whole a feeling of movement that corresponds to how Veronika holds out hope till the very, very end that Boris survives. An impeccable work of art. A must see. Sublimely beautiful.

I felt very emotional the war time tragedy depicted in this movie near and dear ones all lost forever And most tragedy the advantages taken by the stupid opportunistic from the already shaken one during this horrible time

What a great and wonderful film! And on another note, sad and ironic to see another Russian call up in late '22.

Although the conflict lasted four years, Veronica appeared to be in her forties. You can only imagine how awful the conflict was.

They do a good job of portraying how pissed everyone is that this man volunteers for war

I've never seen a director credit _that includes a picture of the Director_ before - Kind of a cool idea, actually. ....Wait a minute, is Tatyana Samoylova _voice-dubbed_ in this!?
