Rankings in college football are pretty subjective, but one of the strongest things people looked at was strength of schedule. If a team goes 5 and 0 but played a bunch of nobodies..it didn't mean much. So teams were encouraged to put strong teams to play against in the out of conference part of your schedule.

The "universal" schedule for gridiron football usually ends up like this; Thu - NFL Fri - High school football (rarely covered, you're either in person or listening to local sports radio to catch this, Texas excepted) Sat - College football Sun - NFL (the 'original day') Mon - NFL

Six points for a touchdown. If you kick for the extra point, you get one point. If you choose to run or pass and get into the end zone, you get 2 points. Most coaches choose the kick for one point.

To your question about objective vs subjective rankings- individual conferences rank their teams by objective wins and losses just like a normal league table. The top-25 is different because there are so many teams spread out across such a huge country, its impossible to rank them all objectively against each other, so there are several different top-25 polls conducted every week that give subjective rankings to all the teams. The Coaches Poll top 25 is determined by an actual polling of the head coaches across the US, the AP is the same idea but with members of the sports media, and then there's also the playoff ranking committee which decides who the top-4 teams are at the end of the year who will make the playoff, but they also put out their own full top-25. Back in the day there were also the BCS top-25 which was done entirely by computer algorithm. It's actually really fascinating the way the top-25 works. Hope this info was helpful!

14:30 within certain guidelines, colleges pick their own schedule. Pick teams that are too easy and you’ll win more but be ranked lower due to low quality, pick too hard and you’ll lose more, the key is finding the perfect sweet spot to be ranked as high as possible

The college season and NFL season are the same time of year. College usually starts the first week of September, and NFL regular season starts in the second week of September. College regular season is 13 weeks, each team gets an off week every year, so everyone plays 12 games. NFL is 18 weeks long, and every team gets an off week, so they play a 17-week season (they played 16 games until 2021). College typically plays on Saturday, with some games happening on Thursday nights and some on Friday nights. NFL typically plays on Sundays, with the exception of one game on Thursday nights and one game on Monday nights. The rankings in 2007 were determined 1/3 by the AP Poll, made up of sportswriters, 1/3 by the Coaches’ Poll, made up of all the coaches in college football, and 1/3 by a computer program. These get put together and takes the top 2 teams at the end of the season, after conference championship games, and they play in the national championship game. Nowadays, the rankings are determined by a committee, and the top 4 teams get picked for a playoff for the national championship. Starting in 2024, the playoff will expand to 12 teams by the same criteria.

Rankings are subjective because there's over 130 teams that play at the top level (the FBS). These teams are dispersed across 10 conferences, and a few schools choose to remain independent (no conference). There are 5 conferences that are known as the "Power 5" that have all the big time programs and schools, the other 5 are full of programs that just aren't as big of a brand, market or school, etc) Depends on the conference, but you will typically play 8 or 9 conference games a year. These are set by the conferences. The schools are free to schedule what they want for the other dates. So scheduling is never even, so there's no way to objectively determine national standings. Teams in weaker conferences have easier schedules. Only thing they can really do is try and schedule 1 or 2 games against the big schools, win and then win every game in their conference to even have a chance of being ranked high enough for the playoffs (currently the top 4 get in as of 2014). Any power 5 team that goes undefeated is essentially guaranteed to be in. Not by rule but just by their schedule probably being at least above average. But that's why say a 11-1 Wyoming would still be seen as quite inferior to a 9-3 or even 8-4 power conference team.

College football and the NFL run during the fall, but the majority of college games are played on Saturday while majority of NFL games are played on Sunday. There are variations, like the NFL playing Thursday and Monday and college being played Wednesday through Saturday. You get six for a touchdown and then one for the PAT kick or two for a two point conversion. The reason you'll get a 4-0 team over a 5-0 team is varied and part of an ongoing argument. It depends on who your "strength of schedule" (how tough those teams are), who you beat (if you play three high ranked teams and beat them you will be ranked higher than a team that only beat one or two), and then it can change based on who the team you beat/lost to played and beat/won. Should also note how many teams are in the top league of NCAA football. Currently there are 124 divided into ten conferences with a few non-aligned teams. And they aren't all equal in team strength. It would be like having the top flight of English football include the Premier League, the Championship, League One, and League Two in the same league. You can go 12-0 and stay out of the top 20 because you only play teams on the lower end of the league. That doesn't mean you'd be able to beat OSU, Michigan, Alabama, or another powerhouse team, and you're ranking will show that. Someone mentioned the fixtures are chosen by the colleges, but it's not like they choose fixtures the year prior. Games are decided years in advance, with some games decided 15 years in advance. As for maximum age, it's GENERALLY 21/22. Start at 17/18, you get four years of eligibility. Occasionally you'll get the 24 year old. Far more rarely you'll get a 30 year old because he started college late in his 20s.

So for the rankings thing…teams play 12 games every season. You play four out of conference teams and eight teams in your conference. Some conferences are naturally better than others and have tougher teams, so because florida plays in the SEC and was 4-2, and Hawaii in the Mountain West and was 7-0, Florida automatically had a tougher schedule because they had to play teams like Tennessee, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, etc for 8/12 games, but Hawaii plays teams like San Jose State, Fresno State, Utah State, Air Force Acadamy, etc. The only opportunity for Hawaii to build up good strong wins was with their four out of conference games. Therefore, Florida’s two losses were likely still against better teams than any of the ones Hawaii had beaten so that’s why 4-2 Florida got ranked in front of 7-0 hawaii. That’s just pulling an example, but that’s how the poll works every week and every season. Furthermore, the college season starts a week and a half before the NFL, and runs concurrently with the NFL. NFL games are played on Thursday, Sunday and Monday, and college games on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The rankings are mostly objective, but there is some subjective. "Favoritism" Objective ways of ranking teams 1. Record 2. Strength of schedule! Meaning a 5-1 who played a tougher schedule could be ranked above a 6-0 team 3. Point differential.. If 2 are even in the two categories above! They will separate them based on how much they won by! Now! How they rank team before the start of the season! Is based on what they did the prior season and who has the most 5 star recruits.. recruiting is based off the level of talent and they category by stars! There is 1 star, 2 stars, 3 stars, 4 stars and 5 star players. I hope this helps you understand. I can also break down the rules for both college and pro and how they are different.. simple example.. in the NFL a pass interference penalty? Will be penalized by where the penalty happened so if you throw a deep ball! 50 yards and happens 50 yards down the field? That's where their next play with be! It's a spot ball foul. As appose to college! College it's always a 15 yard penalty.

I agree with you on how the rankings should work but they are so worried that a small school (less money generated) might make it to a big bowl game or even the playoff. You're right though, it should be based on games played and games won.

Teams set who they will play years ahead of time at conference meetings and NCAA meetings. They have to play teams in their conference and teams outside the conference. They negotiate the TV revenue shares they will receive. The top ranked teams usually play much lower teams early in the season. It’s good for the lower teams to play the powerhouse teams financially and for recruiting and the powerhouse teams usually don’t have to worry about a loss early in the season while they get to hone their plays and get into mid season form. Certain conferences are always strong the Southeastern Conference (SEC) or the Big 10 tend to produce the national champions. Every program in them is competitive and can beat a given team any week. So SEC teams for example may lose 3 games and end up in the top 5 or top 10 because all their losses were in their conference against top 5 teams. Same for the Big 10.

NFL and college play during the same time of year roughly the end of August through mid January. Sports writers used to vote on teams but now they’re ranked by computers based on strength of schedule, margin of victory, and the ranking of they teams they best or lose to. Losing to a highly ranked team hurts you less than losing to a lesser team. Same applies to wins. If you’re #20 and you best #15 you’ll rise a little. But if you beat #3 suddenly you’re a too 10 to top 5 team.

You got it right. Who you play matters, who you beat matters. How badly you beat them also matters. In that USC game against Stanford, USC needed to blow Stanford out. Had USC won that game by only a point or 2 they'd likely still go down in the rankings because they had such a close game against such a heavy underdog. Correct, no ties allowed. If it takes all day today, and part of tomorrow, we'll play OT until someone wins.

Stetson Bennett the current QB for Georgia is 25 I believe, and Oklahoma State has a 32 year old punter. BYU (a Mormon university) is probably most known for having old players. Most of their players are in the mid to late 20s because they all have to serve their mission trips as being members of the Mormon church so they don't start college until a couple years after most people

The key thing regarding how long a player can play is actually based on if he or she has eligibility to play. Once you enroll, you have basically four years after you have enrolled eligibility which is decided on what class you are in college. Class being Freshman (1st year), Sophomore (2nd year), Junior (3rd year), and finally Senior (4th year). Age makes no difference. If you are a 25 year old.guy, enroll in a college or a university that plays football, you tryout for the team and you make that team, that would be your first year of eligibility. Upon completion of that first season, you can play for another 3 seasons as long you. Now Covid changed things somewhat because a lot of colleges did not get to play a full season. The NCAA {the National Collegiate Athletic Association} permitted a 5th year of eligibilty and for some students, even a 6th year, This was caused by some teams having their seasons cancelled,, while other teams or conferences played a shortened season. Also players can play 2 or 3 seasons, then make themselves available to be drafted into the NFL. That is pretty much most college players goal but only a few will actually achieve that goal. College football is the stepping stone to the NFL.

Yes college football coaches get paid. They get paid big time. For context, the average NFL coach salary is 6.6 million per year, while the average college coach is 1.7 million per year. However, one must keep in mind that there are a lot of schools with very small football programs that bring that average down. The college coaches at elite schools actually make more than the NFL average. The top ten current highest paid coaches all make more than 8 million per year.

Most successful coaches will be the highest paid person in the state your college team is located. That would be a state supported university such as the University of Alabama, as opposed to a private university which can go all out in paying a coach a huge salary since those schools receive no money from the state. USC (the University of Southern California) and Notre Dame University are both private schools which in theory, receive no state money for support.

The rankings are indeed subjective because there are way too many teams for each team to play one another, so the AP poll is an average of several hundred college football journalists from around the country that vote every week on their top 25 teams. Taking things like record, strength of schedule, and "eye test" into consideration. If a team is undefeated but not near the top, its because they probably have not played any top class teams

@Collinscody01 Год назад
So the way the AP Poll works is there are 63 media members who report on, write about, and study college football during the season who each week submit who they think the top 25 teams in the country are. Each member makes their own list. Teams are given points based on where the members each put them (25 for #1, 24 for #2, 23 for #3, etc). The points are added up once each member submits their list and the teams are then ranked in order by the number of points they received. The poll is subjective but the voters take many factors into account when voting. One of the main factors is strength of schedule. You might see a team who is 4-1 ahead of a team that’s 5-0 because that 5-0 team may not have played anyone good while the team that is 4-1 has beaten good teams and their 1 loss is to a team highly ranked. The schedule is broken up into 2 categories, conference and non-conference games. Conference games are when you play other teams in your conference and is mostly the same teams every year. Non-conference games are when you play teams out of your conference which means you can play pretty much whoever you want. Most teams play 4 non-conference games and then 8 conference games. The exceptions are teams who are independent and not in a conference, their whole schedule is non-conference games. The teams themselves work with other teams to schedule non-conference games with each other. So if you are a good team and play 4 bad teams in your non-conference schedule, sure you might win all 4 but it doesn’t look as good cuz the teams you played aren’t good.

9:55 College football has a bye week, and they're calculating rankings by what is projected to happen. All 5-0 versus 4-0 means is that the 5-0 team hasn't had their week off yet and the 4-0 has. The 5-0 team could have some brutal matchups coming, where the higher 4-0 team plays strong but beatable opponents for the rest of the season. So yes, there's a ridiculous amount of context that goes into ranking predictions, even so far as including the status of teams that the one being given a rank doesn't even play.... but that team influences the rank of a team they *do* play. Sometimes I wonder if the better ranking services don't require a blood sacrifice from the press before casting bones or hitting the ouija board.

There is no age limit to play college sports, but if you're over 30 and try out for a 1A program it most likely won't go in your favor. The oldest players you'll see are fifth year seniors (and sixth year like two of my buddies but that's much less common) and guys that joined the military at 18, served their time, and then decide to go to school and play after they get out through some government program. Edit: and I guess there's some that just start school later in life and still get on a team. There's been a couple football players that have been drafted to Major League Baseball organizations straight out of high school, but then the dream doesn't manifest so they go to uni and things fall into place

not sure, but i think the ranking is affected by the rank of the team they won or lost to.

Like I said College 🏈 is corrupt, it's all about Subjective opinion polls and not about play on the field

Youd be surprised about teams being good consistently. Alabama for instance has been either the best team or one of the best teams for 15 years straight. Most of their history they have been very good. Same with teams like Usc, Texas, Ohio State, etc. Its actually the opposite of what youd initially think. Yes guys graduate all the time, but unlike the Nfl theres no limit on how many good players you can get each season. The best teams get all the top players, because they have 100 thousand seat stadiums and tons of tradition / money for facilities and gear. The smaller schools / ones who actually focus more on academics or another sport have to constantly overcome that fact in order to compete. When it happens it's usually a flash in the pan and next year a blue blood team wins again. Also they play the seasons at roughly the same time. If they had to play a college season and then go right into another season in the NFL would be crazy. The polls aren't decided based solely on your record. The gap between the top teams and the bottom is enormous in college. One teams 5-0 can be far less impressive than another teams 3-2. College football is weird that way.
