You know about Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson and just how good of a player he was for the team under center. But what you might not know is that during the 1982 NFL season, at the peak of his career, prior to a game against the Baltimore Colts, for some reason, he was asked to be the team's new starting kicker. This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how the Colts had to practice on a muddy non-football field across from Memorial Stadium in 1975. At least Anderson didn’t have to go through that. You also made a video about the game in which Bob Griese couldn’t wear his signature glasses. In that you said he did placekicking in that 1977 preseason.

Excellent video. I have a lot of respect for Anderson. I want to ask if it’s true that he is suffering long term health issues due to playing in the January 1982 championship game? I read about it one time but I cannot find any other reference to it

I've not heard of health issues for Anderson outside of a couple back surgeries and nothing specific to the Freezer Bowl. He played 16 years wearing that tiny cereal bowl in his head....so there's definitely something wrong with the guy. I just hope he gets an answer before he dies like Ken Riley.

I also heard similar stuff about frostbitten players in that game. Mild frostbite is easy to recover from but it can have a permanent effect on the nerves. Mainly in the form of more sensitivity to the cold.

I haven't heard anything much. He's around town here in Cincy all the time. Local brewery 16 Lots has a beer in honor of him called "Dey Drinking". I've had a few to start each other the past two seasons... seems to bring good luck so far! 😆

I think it's a combination of fewer playoff appearances thanks to the Steelers, a small market team, lack of SB rings. But Anderson was the archetype for Bill Walsh to figure out his West Coast offense after the career-ending injury to Kenny Anderson's predecessor (whose name I forget). But this is a team sport, and it certainly wasn't his fault. Yes, he should be in the HoF. The best revamp of a team uniform ever was the Bengals in 1981.

@@jackmessick2869 I agree. With *everything* you said. When you simply look at the numbers. It's clear to see the HOF is simply a popularity contest. Anderson's number's beat the brakes off of *any other* QB in the 70's (yes his does) and until his retirement. His numbers even beat *OTHER* 'Modern' QB's numbers wherein the rules were changed to help the offense, Kenny's numbers *still* beat 4 or 5 other modern HOF QB's. Yet - they are in and have been in for years. He hasn't. It's sad and it shouldn't be like that. If the HOF isn't *really* about a players career and statistics, then simply call it something else.

@@MrPocketfullOfSteel I don't think most people, even pro-Anderson people, realize just how true what you just said is. Anderson had 7 contemporaries who are in the HOF: Tarkenton, Namath, Griese, Staubach, Bradshaw, Stabler & Fouts. Anderson was just as good as Staubach, and better than all the rest. And it's not even close. It's absolutely maddening how lazy & myopic the HOF voters are.

Actually, it was not THAT unusual for a quarterback to also do kicking then. Danny White for several seasons also was the punter for the Cowboys before after teams would take a 15-yard penalty on purpose for trying to get him out while kicking they found a punter.

Fun fact: Wide receiver Steve Kreider, who held for field goals and extra points, actually ran for an extra point against the Los Angeles Raiders the previous week.

@@Bruce12867 Kreider was also designated as the Bengals' 3rd-string QB for Weeks 11 (@Eagles) and 12 (vs RAIDERS). They brought Mike Ford (#11) in for Weeks 13-15. Have never been able to definitively determine who was designated as 3rd-string for Weeks 16 & 17. (wouldn't be surprised if it was Kreider again)
