Pilots have So Much pressure on them to be on time and to prevent delays! We have a friend who had been a pilot for an airline for about a year. He had been a private pilot for many years. He was delayed (no fault of his own) getting to a distant airport where he had to pilot a flight somewhere. He didn't make it in time. They fired him. It was the first, and last, time he was late! Airlines know that passengers are most vocal about being delayed. They should make an announcement in bad weather like..."There is dangerous weather ahead and we will not risk your wellfare by continuing ahead. Sorry folks but we have to divert to XYZ airport to keep you safe." Who could be mad at That!?

Some passengers don’t appreciate the gravity of the situation that pilots are facing . Pressure from the airline the pilots work for and pressure take passengers to their destinations . The woman that said pilots were playing chicken with their lives is partially right & wrong . Yes they should have used an alternative airport to land but the pilots are under pressure to deliver the service . Anyway the loss of life is no joke . I’m sorry for everyone involved but not American Airlines . ❤️

Probably because like many large projects, building an airport is a complex balancing act. Build it too far out where land is cheap and flat - nobody wants to drive 2 hours for a flight Build it near / in cities - turns out large areas of flat land near/in cities are already developed or super expensive Even if you somehow find the perfect balance of the above, you still gotta have some sort of wall/fencing in the end for physical security.

They weren't used, only brakes. Watch 36:43 - you'll see the pilots are touching the ground too late. He's also simply going too fast - 160kn when he should be around 130. Ironically manual brakes are probably the worst option, because you're landing on a slip 'n slide. Manual brakes are done AFTER the spoilers and reversers... when you reach about 80kn.

The plane could PROBABLY make it through the alley? It seems profit margins are too slim and competition within the industry too fierce when management make these decisions. And it's across the board- take Boeing ( for example) even the FAA has had to step in to enact specific regulations just for them about the number of aircraft manufactured per month. New software was secretly implemented in the 737 Maxx - just to avoid the down time needed to explain it. Two planes fell out of the sky within 5 months - but no grounding because they'd have lost their competitive advantage over Sky Bus - AY CARUMBA

I blame the airlines and pilots and airports for these deaths and the harm. But, why don't airports have a responsibility to close the airport when conditions exceed safe landing conditions? Also, you can count on corporations like airlines to try to get their money's worth out of the pilots by pushing schedules. I assume the airport corporations are also making decisions based on money, not lives. It is terrible that the pilots and controllers are the ones left holding the bag for these things.

@@jessh5310 it's not that easy. Mine was a very superficial answer, but you cannot just close airports. First: thunderstorm have levels of dangerousness, and this isn't just a black and white problem. There are tons of variables, which means there is NO precise formula to use to shut an airport The pilots have all the info and training they need to be able to evaluate if the weather is good enough or not. Which is why, pilots are the one who needs to make the decision. Especially when you consider that closing an airport, means there are tons of airplanes which are suddently all forced to take different routes, and it becomes a crazy mess istantly. And that chaos would make deadly mistakes crazy easier.
