For Charles to say to Diana that he loved her was clearly an overstatement. He clearly couldn't love her no matter how hard he tried.

I love how they are arguing with each other and pointing fingers in probably one of the most beautiful settings where they should be enjoying it together. It really shows just how far gone their marriage is.

The trouble with Charles was he was born middle aged, Diana was young and full of fun.

That subtle manipulative twist in the conversation, wither it be intentional or subconscious where Diana wants to talk, be heard, be understood, but then Charles spins it around to be about him and what he’s going through. Diana doesn’t get to speak and explain herself in any meaningful way and ends up having to console Charles.

Running after love is excruciating I lived like this up until I decided to pour into myself instead of chasing someone else .

They were too similar in character, and too far apart in age. There was also the problem of Charles being in love with another woman, and not being allowed to marry her. Diana was from a well respected noble family with English blood for centuries, she would have been the perfect wife had she fully understood the responsibilities of being the princess of Wales and had no illusions about having deep love.

He must've loved her at some point in their marriage, but he has always been in love with Camilla.

I would like to remind everyone that Diana was very young when she married Charles. He was 32 and already had some life experiences while she was 20 and barely had any. Charles was in love with Camille and couldn't grasp the concept that as future King, his life was no longer his own, and Diana was just trying to make her ill-fated marriage work and find some common ground with her already estranged husband.

The problem is that he was in love with another woman when he married Diana. That’s simply unforgivable. He should never have married her. She of course became much more popular than he will ever be. Camilla isn’t even worth mentioning.

This issue here is that Charles sees in Diana, his failure to set himself free, to live authentically, to be his own person, and to find his own identity. Things that since he was born was what he wanted desperately and yet was psychologically abused by his Father to stay in the mold, and often was ridiculed by peers for having "feminine traits". The reality is both of them if you look back at how they behaved and developed as children, are fickle, immature, playful, and incredibly sensitive. Charles had those things beat out of him, and ultimately lost himself. In Diana, who is upsetting the establishment by trying to not lose sense of herself and her own identity, he sees his failure. He doesn't feel safe to be vulnerable with Diana, because Diana isn't dependable or reliable to him. He doesn't trust her because she doesn't understand the importance of tradition, she is at a completely different extreme than Camilla who is more neutral, and is frankly, overindulgent to Charles. That sense of instability that he feels from Diana, makes him feel and idealize Camilla to be a firmer foundation and protective barrier for him. Camilla acts like a sort of prison, where he is able to microdose part of his authentic self while still being encouraged or supported to ascribe to the sterility and stoicism of his role. She's the prison warden that feeds his ego, that acts interested in everything he does to the point where it's borderline disingenuous, and she's a satellite that lets him shine before others and dulls herself in the process (she's frankly dull). Charles needs dull. Seeing Diana shine and be adored for something he was told he could never be as a child (a real person) makes him seethe.

I remember Princess Diana did that a lot in public because she was trying to avoid the cameras constantly in her face, but in private? The actress turned into a ridiculous Princess Diana caricature, especially the long necked actress in season five. It was preposterous!

And just now realized what causes the strife to disappear or ease up are due to his actions, at least in part if not in their entirety, has to do with his own actions and/behaviors. I actually think they were too fundamentally different to ever work out long term. He was considerably more educated and realistic. Diana was a pop culture girlie who probably didn't read all that much and loved escapist entertainment. The irony is this - if Charles did marry Camilla like he should have in the first place, I truly believe that Diana would have been his mistress. Another timeline and another reality.

At the end of the day, there isn’t a person I’ve spoken too that thinks Charles is in the right. You are going to be the next King. Being over looked is getting abused by customers and managers in a minimum wage job. Going home to your concrete jungle where a picture or different coloured rug shows some colour or individuality. There are many broken families and scar covered households in the British isles.
