Doug shows Ed The Cult playing Love Removal Machine. Ed has never listened to The Cult, having had the wrong impression of what type of music they played in the 80's. Will this win him over?

I don't get how an old Led Zep fan would have never heard this song. It's been on rock radio for 40 years.

I first heard The Cult in Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec. "She Sells Sanctuary" came on the radio and i had to stop playing and look up what this magnificent sound was.

I relate to that. Same for me when I discovered 'Scars on Broadway They say' (System of a down era) when playing a Colin McCrae rally racing game.

FUN FACT - Ian Astbury toured with The Doors as a replacement for Jim Morrison in the late 90s-early 2000’s... And Rick Rubin produced some of their early work. You should do She Sells Sanctuary- everyone knows the track.

I left the UK in 1982 before The Cult was formed and never heard of them living in Australia. Came back to the UK in 1992 and saw exactly what I missed. SUPERB BAND.

The studio version brings out the melody a lot more even though this was a nice live version. I think this is a great great hard rock song. To me this this is their best song. Peace dog is great to. Great riff. The Phoenix and she sells sanctuary and wild flower are good too.

Saw them in 1986 when they were a goth band. Here they stepped into hard rock to try entering into the US market. Later on they came back to goth. One of the greatest bands of the 80s.

Wow this is from "the old grey whistle test". Used to be a great show. Only live performances allowed. No videos or miming. They were one of the best live bands I've seen. And since live bands used to be my job, I've seen an awful lot. They did start out as a post punk sort of new wave ish outfit. Southern death cult. But they evolved into a hard rock band. Try fire woman, wild hearted son, sweet soul sister, edie (ciao baby) for a ballad. Which was about edie Sedgwick, a protege of Andy Warhol who died of a heroin overdose. As for being basic and simple. That's all that's required as long as it's good isnt it? 😊 He was also the sexiest man alive at that time. Watch the videos you'll see why. 😊

They always remind me of a young, vibrant Rolling Stones. A lot of their riffage is very Stones-ish. Although at the guitar breakdown I think they must have heard UFO's Prince Kajuku.

I loved The Cult. The vocalist has a great voice. Big and commanding. My favorite The Cult song is Sweet Soul Sister. But I love this track also. The fidelity of this version has a lot to be desired. Still👍

The reason this Cult album sounded so different than their other Goth Rock stuff was because it was produced by Rick Rubin

Ed, you will like the entire "Sonic Temple" album. I see people suggesting "She Sells Sanctuary" - but you won't like that one. It falls more on the New Wave side. "Sonic Temple" is a straight banger all the way through the album.

Ed. Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed Ed. These guys were pretty badass from maybe 85 - 89/90. I saw them open for Billy Idol at an arena show and they absolutely blew him off the stage. Can't remember the year other than it was late 80's I think. Several of their albums during this era were like a bridge from the early/mid 80's hard rock to the coming wave of alternative rock that would of course make them less relevant. But for a while, they WERE the alternative, and did really well. A few years after the Billy Idol show, I went and saw them open for Metallica at another arena show in '89. Ian's waistline had grown at an inverse proportion to their former glory, and I felt so bad for these guys lol. Metallica just annihilated them, and I didn't pay them much mind after that, but they've stuck around doing their thing, breaking up and reforming a few times I think. They won't ever recapture their old glory, but for a few years there, they were young rock gods living the dream that so many of us never realized.

All hail Sir Billy Duffy, King of the Gretsch White Falcon (although obviously not featured in this TV show performance)!! But I gotta say, I prefer the original studio version off their EXCELLENT "Electric" album, featuring those patented anti-production techniques of that bearded zen guru Rick Rubin!! P.S., hey, Ed, Google their follow-up "Sonic Temple" (album), featuring "Fire Woman" and "Sweet Soul Sister" amongst other tracks, most lovingly produced by Mr. Bob Rock. Kind of a hybrid between their "Love" and "Electric" albums and perfect arena rock for 1989. And one more thing, MACH-IIIIIINE!!!!!

In my experience, the Cult was popular with many different cliques; Motoheads, Jocks, Heshers, Punks, Metelheads, New Wavers, etc. Kind of how they all loved Bowie, but not as well known.

After discovering The Cult while playing Grand Theft Auto Vice City several years ago, I now own three of their CD's I have asked myself, where was I in their hay day? A quick story about ignorance, I was 17 in 1976 and as a part time job I worked in a ice cream parlor/ restaurant one of the dish washers was a huge Cream fan he was several years older than most of us and we harassed him because of his taste in music, none of us had ever heard of Cream. No more than three years later I owned the complete Cream album collection, how stupid I felt but it taught me a lesson about closed mindedness at least when it comes to music.
