Neil is by far my favorite Deniro character. A true gangster with a code of honor.

Fun fact: Marines and Army Rangers used film of Van Kilmer's gun reloading during the shootout to teach soldiers how to properly change a riffle's magazine

Pacino’s character was doing coke throughout the movie. They cut those scenes out. But, in some of the scenes when he’s all amped up, that’s why.

The gunfight at the bank was choreographed by veterans of the British Special Forces ie: The SAS

If you guys want other Michael Mann films I'd recommend Collateral (2004) and The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

So happy that you guys called Waingro the random. When my brother saw it for the first time he loved it but called it a movie about the repercussions of starting a GTA Heist with a terrible random. To this day we and the friends we made online call it when we see it; "we got a Waingro". We just quit the heist search again.

Re: Dennis Haysbert (Donald), this was relatively early in his movie career, he'd mostly done TV up to that point. "Waiting to Exhale", which came out this same year, helped him become more known, then he really took off after "24".

The shootout was actually very realistic. Even with numbers, the cops were out gunned. The suppression, and movement of the robbers was on point and the quick reload of Kilmer was textbook

The ending of this always gave me the same melancholy vibes of both Blade Runner movies, strangely sweet and sad. I don’t know man, makes me feel a certain way.

I just read the book Heat 2 a little while back. Takes place right after the events of this movie and it’s also a prequel showing Vincent’s time in Chicago. Supposedly there will be Heat 2 movie soon! Good reaction guys.

I loved this movie growing up never understood it but after a while seeing Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in such a perfect film together was awesome especially the coffee scene.

Heat remains one of my favorite films ever, I don't even notice the length-to me, that's another sign of how great it is (according to my tastes), bc I don't get bored & restless despite the nearly 3 hours. Have watched it several times...there's so much I like about this movie, the list would go on and on !

You gotta remember this movie was filmed in the 90s, long before the US police was as militant and extreme as it is today. Sure, today if that shootout happened, there'd be 150 SWAT team members on top of them within 15 minutes, but in the 90s, that shootout was much more plausible. Just look at the North Hollywood shootout in 1997. 2,000 rounds fired, 12 officers and 8 civilians injured, and lasted 45 minutes. And that was with only two shooters.

1st time watching one of your reactions and it was AWESOME! You guys are so real! I'm a 53 yr old dude from Canada and I saw this film in the theatre in 1995 with my girlfriend when I was 25. It is easily my favourite cops and robbers film with Reservoir Dogs being a close second. Just liked and subscribed- looking forward to watching your content!

The shoot-out is based on a real life incident involving two armed robbers who held police at bay in North Hollywood for over thirty minutes before being taken out.

The director hired 2 former SAS operators as advisers to train the actors in weapons, tactics, etc. Mick Gould and ‘Andy McNab’. ‘Andy McNab’ is actually a kinda famous guy from a failed mission in the 91 Gulf War. There’s been a couple books & movies about it. “Bravo Two Zero” is McNab’s story. The incident was kinda like a “Lone Survivor” moment for the UK.

This is the absolute top of the (non-Mafia) crime genre, and the runners-up don't even come close. If someone recommends something else and claims it's on the same level as this, don't take them seriously.

The "Cousin" that got told "You can get killed walking your doggy" is Tone Loc. Probably was his first time acting. Love your reactions. You guys crack me up. Keep it going.

This Robert De Niro at his most badass , he's not just a criminal he actually knows close combat in this film & is a master villain that outsmarted everyone including himself but being a wolf gave him that final taste for blood to kill the AB guy at the end that he just couldn't resist!!!! Tom Sizemore & Val Kilmore & Pacino killed it too!!!! Its my favorite heist movie & it gets better after each watch & its got the most iconic shootout & the late night cinematography with the lights & the blues are amazing & that dinner scene with De Niro and Pacino is iconic & legendary 💯🐺 Check out Micheal Manns other heist/bank robber film "Public Enemies" with Johnny Depp & Christian Bale playing cat n mouse & its another film based on a true story even more than this film

1995 HEAT and 1998 Ronin are two great action movies with De Niro, form the time when he still was a legitimate actor (just look at his IMDB for like lat 15-20 years, very little good stuff). The shootout here is iconic AF, and probably the best in movie history, and there are also other scenes which inspired e.g. video games (like the armored car robbery). For me it is an uneven movie though, a lot of good stuff, mixed with medicore. Enjoyable, but more in a way that you gonna enjoy and remember particular scenes than the whole movie. Ronin is more even, but even there what people remember most is the car chase, or the planning scene with Sean Bean

Pacino is a GOD in this movie

In an interview (can't recall where) Pacino talked about the fact that his character in this film was (at least on paper) chipping cocaine to help him with the crazy hours, stress, and to keep him sharp - like he mentions to his wife. For whatever reason they decided to leave those scenes on the cutting room floor, so at times his character comes across weird, because you don't have the context of his substance use. However, if you ever watch this again, now that you know that bit of info, his character makes TOTAL sense.

Wayngro is a serial killer. One thing y'all didn't notice, that wasn't the girl from the last scene. He probably didn't get rid of the body yet. But a few people I know made the same mistake. He on a spree.

You can definitely call it a stupid from a criminal perspective.

If you think the shootout scene was too long wait till you see the real life north Hollywood shootout, it lasted like 20 times longer irl.

Some fun facts about this movie: 1. One of the most famous gangsters in France, Redoine Faid, said this movie inspired him to do heist and even followed the movie heist and made one identical. He has escaped prison two times. Look him up, very interesting person 2. Al Pacino was actually high on cocaine when making this movie, he has admitted it. There was also a scene when he snorted a line of actual cocaine but they decided to not show it in the movie 3. The scene when he was screaming great ass, they did that scene so many times that Al Pacino got tired and started screaming, the reaction of Hank Azaria was genuine. You can even hear someone say “Jesus” in the background 4. The coffee scene between Al Pacino & De Niro was shot on one take. They both agreed to not rehearse before the scene and it came out they way it did. De Niro also said this scene was the reason he accepted the role

Michael Mann main characters often state a personal code and if they stop living by it they come unstuck.

Everything about the bank heist is beautiful. All the way down to the scenes right before and right after. Before they walk in the bank you see Eady packing up to leave; getting ready to go with Neil to New Zealand. Then you see Charlene with Domonic as he plays with his toys. After the bank and the shootout you see Elaine, Michael's wife, watching TV as she sees her husband is dead. Then you see Lily, Breedan's wife, in a bar and she sees that he has been killed in the shootout as well. The two women whose partners survived before. The two whose partners died after. Poetry.

The coffee shop scene is killer. And I remember hearing movie goers complaining that the shootout was "omg ..so loud". It's about time a movie came even remotely close to true gunshot volume.

The song at the end is God's hand over the Face of the Water by Moby. One of my favorite songs. Great Movie

1995. The police weren't militarize yet. Only SWAT had heavy firepower. They advanced on the police with superior firepower, attacking the ambush before the police could get set up and before Special Weapons arrived.

The shootout scene was based on the one that happened in LA in real life. The actual shootout when on for longer.

45:50 You have a post 9/11 mindset. In the 90's, the cops in the LAPD were not "militarized" as some would accuse them today. Stay that way, the threat is real. Back then they had 9mm handguns, good for 50-100 meters max. That is pushing it. You have the Heat team moving like a military with automatic weapons. They choose single, burst and full throughout. The marine corps used this as a training vid; Val Kilmer does a perfect combat reload. Suppressive fire, and chainlink move to cover. Also this scenario happened irl, in '98. When two idiots inspired by the movie went for a bank robbery in North Hollywood. 3 years after this film. The cops had no answer, waited for SWAT. Stuck in traffic on a training exercise. The cops, truly had to run to gun shops and get weapons adequate to defeat them. In the end, SWAT, in shorts and vests, ended the f**kers. There is a TV movie as well. But most irl vids are online

Movies used to be long. Gone With The Wind and others. Today we have Oppenheimer. This is why the intermission break was created bit it was never a gimmick. If it was 3 hours then it needed to be. 3 hour films mean theres less showings in a day. Movie studios want to show a film as many times in a day as possible to maximize profits. If its 2.5 to 3 hours long then the director felt to tell the story correctly it needs to be.

Another De Niro heist movie you may enjoy is called 'The Score' from 2001. It's a decent flick overall that doesn't get as much attention as it should IMO. Edward Norton stars in it too and really plays his character well.

Enjoying the viewing, Oceans 11 came out in the 60’s, with ole blue eyes …

If you like this, more Michael Mann stuff you need to check out is Collateral (2004) and Thief (1981). Absolutely recommend those films 100% if you enjoyed HEAT.

I think you guys would enjoy watching Collateral, with Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise. The Town is another good movie, also about crime and robberies.
