Nastasia Demetriou is really good at giving Cala Maria a Greek accent, which really matches the character, since sirens, merfolk "*cough *cough, Triton", and gorgons come from Greek Mythology and Natasia's father is Greek-Cypriot.
Not really. She does love being a sea beast and Terror of the Seven Seas, but she does mention it's very lonely. It's true she's not pining for love or someone else, but she does admit it's a sacrifice being what she loves.
Considering her dream and how "she started small" and we see a regular mermaid tail to later reveal her gorgon form, I wonder is she've been always that way or sold her soul to have that monstruous ability and be scarier.
I'd like to think that she sold her soul in order to change her size at will. My evidence for this is that, when you get the good ending in the game, you can see a smaller Cala Maria in the crowd, even though she was larger than the ship wrecks in her boss stage. And since we haven't seen her take on a smaller size in the show (yet, at least), I'm going to say that she doesn't have that ability in her arsenal yet. Why would she want to change size at will? Well, I think it has something to do with the lyrics of her song; "It's a lonely life, but the only life I would ever want for me". This implies that Cala Maria, while insisting that she's certain that her being the most feared beast in the Seven Seas is enough for her, feels a sense of loneliness. And you have to remember that Cala can't just causually stroll onto land, because she's a fucking gigantic mermaid/gorgon hybrid. So, over the course of her being this feared sea beast, she'd become more and more lonely until she'd hear about how the Devil could grant anyone anything at the low, low price of their very soul, and she decides to take a shot at it as well. That's what I think, at least.
@@wobblewokgaming655 that kinda makes sense! But it depends on if she borned a gorgon or turned into one. If she borned a gorgon being able to change sizes at will would come very handy for her not only for the loneliness but to attract more prey to her telling sailors stories about this monster or some treasure on certain cave. However I was kinda thinking more about the oppposite direction, she was regular size like at the good ending and due to her ambitions and how hard wrecking ships with her size was, she sold out to be bigger and having gorgon powers making her dream true but realizing how lonely she felt because she is fucking gigantic now and can't interact like she used to do.
I want to thanks the entire staff for giving Cala Maria a deep voice and not a Betty-Boop-like voice because omg Nastasia Demetriou did an excellent job!
We already have Ms Chalice that's pretty close to that (though not the sex symbol boop was intended to be) so it would be redundant, but MY GOD I would hate if they had a high cutesy voice to her when she's calm then only having Natasia voice her when she's enraged or something.
@@JasonJacksonJames Very vague terms in this world. Her father could be a sailor and a gorgon, and her mother could be a siren which is part fish. That's just a theory in the end, but we can't deny she has gorgon traits
I actually was specting her to have a Spanish accent like her name comes from calamar and María (calamar is squid in Spanish) but her Greek accent still nice
You might like Rafscrap's work here on youtube; she has the most lovely deep voice I've ever heard. My usual recommendation for her off the top of my head is her cover of 'Hey, Little Songbird' from Hadestown
Gosh the Greek accent really fits Cala Maria but honestly I thought she would’ve had a high pitched voice like the boss in Cuphead At first, I thought she had a Russian accent.
Fun fact, both the accompaniment and the tune are from an aria called “L'amour est un oiseau rebelle” which translates to “love is a rebellious bird” lol
Natasia Demetriou did so well here oml it’s so unexpected hearing her voice outside of What We Do in The Shadows, she smashed it with her singing voice here!
She also voices the narrator in the kids' movie "The Magician's Elephant". I was surprised hearing my favourite polyamorous vampire girlboss serial killer queen's voice in a movie I put on for my little siblings to watch LOL. The range is staggering
My father was a sailor, my mother was a fish Since I was little girl I only had one wish A tiny dream belonged to me To be known across the seven seas I started small but my ambition grew And know I’m known across the ocean blue All my life what I wanted to be The fiercest monster in the deep blue sea It’s a lonely life But the only life I would ever want for me But I’ve come so far and now I’m a star And everyone knows me Yes, I am number one sea beast I am the Cala Maria 😍😍🤩🤩
~Lyrics~ My father was a sailor, My mother was a fish, Since I was little girl I've only had one wish, A tiny dream, belonged to me, To be known across the seven seas! I started small but my ambition grew! And now I'm known across the ocean blue, All my life what I wanted to be, The fiercest monster in the deep blue sea, It's a lonely life, But the only life, I would ever want for me, But I've come so far and now I'm a star! And everyone knows me! Ah! Yes, I am number one sea beast! I am the Cala Maria!
What makes her song so memorable and slightly unnerving is how simultaneously relatable and repulsive she is. Her song touches on childhood hopes, the emotional sacrifices sometimes required to fulfill them, and the twinges of latent regret those produce... except here in the context of her desire to kill sailors and be a monster for a monster's sake. Just as she nonchalantly transitions between a human-like face and the roaring snarl of a sea-Gorgon at will, so too does her song casually flip between human and horrifying. But is that even a contradiction?
Nope. Mermaids are half human and half fish. If he banged a Mermaids it would either be a Mermaid or more likely. A human. To he ment he probobly banged his calamari or maybe just a normal bass
I like how like mirabel they made cala maria a bit more beefy in the face but she still looks really pretty. I was also expecting her to have more of a Disney princess type voice but I like the strong deep voice she has.
I did notice that Cala Maria singing her song is somewhat close to the opera Carmen (Habanera) especially this verse: "To be known across the seven seas I started small but my ambition grew And now I'm known across the ocean blue"
Honestly she seems to have self loathing issues. She smacked her reflection in the pool, she hit the bone pile angrily, she’s lonely, the mirrors are so small that it doesn’t reflect all of her face.
You're right. She loves being the top monster, but hates that it's caused her loneliness. At the same time, she can't and won't give up her "career", _because_ she's a monster. And it's because she's a GIANT monster that she can only regard others as food anyway, since everyone's literally and figuratively beneath her. Except for Brinybeard, who could resist her gaze and gave her something she actually wanted. She needs someone who can outclass her, but I don't know how Brineybeard will managed that. Though, I hope we get a season 3. I'd like to see more of her character development.
No the mirrors are small because she is very far from human sized and I'm assuming destroying ships are where she gets them from. I'd say it's more loneliness than self loathing but cool take.
Now I want a longer extended version of this song like her singing is actually pretty good and i liked her Greek accent even tho i wasn’t expecting her voice to be like this but i don’t mind.
gotta give cala maria her props: she set out a goal and she damn well finished it. also, judging by just this song she is a total slytherin: she's ambitious (even says so herself) and is clearly very proud of herself and what she's done. *also she has snakes on her head and could live underwater where the slytherin common room is*
I think she meant her Father was a gorgan and her mother either a siren or mermaid because with the cuphead world I don’t think “my father was a sailor,my mother was a fish” is quite literally
@@BeccaFishys i'm willing to bet anything that her name was supposed to be just a pun when it was just the game's creators but then the show's creators figured out they could also use it as a reference and thus the song.
Netflix please renew the show it’s my favorite show ever I watch it all the time. I know you have unused scripts for episodes please make more, so many people would watch it, so many people love this show and don’t want it to end 😢 Please one day make more episodes. Or I will have to make them myself
The entire time watching this I was like "This sounds so much like the person who plays Nadja in What We Do In The Shadows!" and lo and behold, the actresses are the same person!
I don't know who the voice actress of this character is, But after hearing this song, I believe she truly derves to get either a Grammy or an Emmy for singing this tune in this episode.
curiosity about the Brazilian version: in our version they changed her name from "Cala Maria" to "Dona Iara", in English it would be something like "Ms Iara" this happened because here in Brazil there is a very famous legend in our country about a mermaid called Iara, being some versions of the legend she attracts men to the riverbank, when they get close enough she pulls them into the water and drowns them, the legend still says that those who manage to escape end up going crazy, I still prefer call it Cala Maria, but following this reasoning they did to adapt its name, the name change made a lot of sense. another not so interesting but very cool curiosity is that here she had the same voice actress as Garnet from "Steven universe" your name is Márcia Coutinho
