While adjusting pieces during the game is a common practice, sometimes it can be the cause of distraction or confusion for the opponent. In the game between GM Ruslan Ponomariov (2613) and GM Bharath Subramaniyam H (2435) at the World Blitz 2023, a touch move created confusion. Watch the game to see if the move was made correctly.

Didn't folks watch the video? White drops piece on the board and make chaos. He do fix some pieces but not all, moves and black moves, push the clock and white continue to fix pieces as the d-pawn was obviously not positioned inside the square, he do this on his own time. Obvious fixing pieces is not touching pieces.

@@baddestass2332Ukraine is at war with Russia because Russia invaded in order to capture all of Ukrainian territory which makes Russia the fascist state. So if a country helps Ukraine then that is good moral thing to do. Just like US helped Russia in WW2 during German Nazi invasion. So normal civilized countries do give a sxxt. However, if India decides to remain neutral then that is sort of like being an Ostrich and sticking your head in the sand and not caring. However, regardless of all that, I think in chess match it is important to respect opponents by shaking their hand. I think Badrath should have protested to arbiter and get Ruslan to either shake hand or forfeit. This was clearly a sign of contempt/disrespect even looking at body language in the beginning.

Speaking of handshaking: what about too hard squeezing the hand, almost crashing other's hand? During an open ni November, after a handshake, my hand hurt so much, that I decided not to shake hands in last rounds under the excuse(s) - injured hand and virus scare, so I suggested "fist handshake". I thought this chess handshake should be ritual, soortsmanship, like you don't normaly kiss a lady's hand - it is just a ritual... Why handshake in tournaments should be like a duel in Middle Age inn where we "should look each other in the eye, knock our glasses and cheer our clans..."?? Any oppinion?

The reason for the handshake is to show the player are ready to start the clock. SO there can be no discrepancy. Him nodding and pointing suffices. @renatomercurio4774
@renatomercurio4774 4 месяца назад
Ruslan seemed a bit nervous and shy. But the missing handshake seemed to be a coincidence and misunderstanding, as both, the offer and his guesture to hit the clock happened at the exact same time. Bharath then assumed, that Ruslan wanted to protect him from some invisible virus and accepted the missing handshake, without being bothered. At last Ruslan absolutely correctly placed all pieces back using same hand, that also pushed the clock. But continued adjusting in his next move. There is no doubt about it. But he should announce it and didn't. Every player will tolerate that - in normal situations. But Bharath - seeing, that he is completely lost - tried his very last trick by claiming touch move. And I don't know the result, but it seems, that Ruslan fell for it. And they shook hands, so there is a problem with the virus theory.

Adjusts this in the next move but without prior announcement, then making another move instead. -He probably intended to merely adjust the pawn, but it is not entirely evident. Moving the pawn is not obviously ridiculous in a blitz game. -Obliged to make a move with the pawn by touch-move-rule which was pointed out by the Indian guy. -Pretends not to understand the protest and arrogantly makes gestures to the Indian guy to make a move. -Indian guy shows good sportsmanship by not persisting and resigns instead since he has worse position.

It's clear without any doubt white was adjusting the pawn. Both Magnus and Hikaru do it all the time (adjusting a piece without saying anything as it's obvious what their intention is -- watch some of their clips). The black player is a sore loser. He knows white was adjusting but he still whined like a loser because he is losing

Bad sportsmanship from Bharat. 8:29 Ruslan was "clearly" adjusting misplaced pawn during knight capture. If you are a Gentleman then be true Gentleman and if you are a PSYCHO who wants to win or draw a losing game at any cost any trick from rule book killing the SPIRIT of the game THEN BE A TRUE PSYCHO. Any of these choices appear "BEAUTIFUL!!" and FULL OF LIFE!!. SADLY Bharat chose NONE! Bharat chose to show himself as a small Psycho and a little Gentleman, which appeared to me as a very sad, weak and helpless character of a chess player. This way it can be said Bharath lacks a character of a world champion , which is very "disheartening" for me as an Indian. See his other games, he is such a GIFTED player! Such incidences makes me remember how Magnus dealt with Hans Nieman. Magnus did not care for the world over his own conviction. He just kept on with being honest with himself. And that shows the character I am talking about. That shows his "integrity" with himself, which we love and respect all along.

Bharat seemed to just raise the issue to his opponent, and resigned shortly after perhaps as a warning for future games, especially considering that Ruslan had enough time on the clock and could say "adjust" before making his actual move. On top of that Ruslan declined a handshake at the start of the game, which may have offended him. It seems Bharat is in the right here, and Ruslan should have shown more sportsmanship or understanding of the blitz rules.

FIDE Handbook: "touch move: If a player touches a piece with the intention of moving it, he/she is obliged to move it." Ponomariov was clearly not touching the pawn with the intention to move it, but to adjust it after having knocked over several pieces on his prior move. Also, "4.2.1 Only the player having the move may adjust one or more pieces on their squares, provided that he/she first expresses her/his intention (for example by saying "j'adoube" or "I adjust")." Ponomariov was clearly in violation of this rule; he adjusted his other pieces while he had the move, but not the pawn. If an arbiter would have been called to rule on the situation, severity of penalty is up to his/her discretion and the options available can go from a warning to expulsion from the event. In this case it would be a choice between a "warning" and "increasing the remaining time of the opponent", neither of which would materially alter the outcome of the game. Also, it's not a very "curious case", as this kind is guaranteed to happen sooner rather than later in a blitz event.

You're allowed to do that in blitz, there's an allowance of a few miliseconds where you begin moving the piece while the opponents clock is ticking, ruslan was definitely pushing it a bit far though
@sauron4313
@sauron4313 4 месяца назад
@@poppyharlow4448 I am pretty sure that is not a rule. You use the same hand to make a move and touch the clock so that way your hand is clear of the board as soon as your opponent's clock starts running. Usually in such cases if they do adjust a piece on their opponent's time it is a game between 2 grandmasters and they let it go because they generally have respect for each other at the top level of the game.

@@sauron4313 The rule is based on intention. And he clearly was not intending to the move piece after accidentally knocking it over, especially if he adjusted it when it wasn't his turn. Come on, There is no such thing as a technical touch move in chess because that would be extremely unsporting. An actual example of a broken touch move rule, is when Hikaru moved his queen to a square against Levon in 2016, and then changed his mind and moved it back, picking up and moving another piece. But the fact Ruslan accidentally knocked his piece, and adjusted it when it wasn't his turn, no way the arbiter will think he intended to move it.

He did not, because he just raised the issue and resigned shortly after. Even if Ruslan was forced to move that pawn and Bharat got an extra minute (which would be very unlikely) this would still be a totally lost position. In such cases grandmasters usually show sportsmanship to each other and not worry about adjusting pieces before moving, however it seems Ruslan lost all of that when he declined Bharat's handshake at the start of the game.

I just wanted to clarify some things since I played this game and some comments here piss me off 😅. 1. It's not visible on the video, but we actually shook hands before the game and when there was command to start the round, I just wanted to start the game instead of shaking hands again and again. As far as I know the rules, since COVID-19 it's not obligatory to shake the hands before the game at all. 2. As you can see on the video in some moments pieces fell since we were in time trouble and I used my own time to adjust it. However to my own surprise, my opponent stopped the clock and it looks like he wanted to protest something... I didn't understand such an attitude because my position was absolutely winning at that moment. One day before we had a situation when someone protested and it took more than 1 hour for the appeal committee to make a decision. So you can imagine my thoughts at that moment 😂 Probably my opponent realized how stupid the situation was, because even if he forced me to play with a pawn d5 that I adjusted he still will be absolutely lost! 3. Anyway it's just a lesson for me to be careful because some players could try another time to win the game at any cost. Thank you for reading. You can watch this video slowly or ask my opponent about what he was thinking to make your own conclusions.
