Top 5 for sure. He was one of the greatest shooters ever while being a top 2 passer in his era and a solid defender (Made 3 all-defense teams). He won 3 straight mvps in one of the most stacked eras in nba history, was consistently making the finals while playing in the conference that had the Dr J and Moses Sixers, the Bad Boy Pistons, the underrated Moncrief Bucks and an mvp caliber Michael Jordan. He also had a 4 year stint from 1985-88 where he put up 28, 10 and 7 on 50 40 90 percentages. Keep in mind, 86-88 was AFTER his back injury. Not to mention his rival, Magic, was playing with another one of the greatest players of all time, Kareem. So his 1-2 finals record against him isnt really that bad. Kevin Mchale, who is generally considered Birds best teammate, didnt actually start until 1986, which just makes the 1984 championship that much more impressive
When people talk about Magic, they also talk about Larry Bird. One of the most iconic sports rivalries in history is not “overlooked” Edit: I respect you for changing the title
Larry legend is by far my favourite player, im old enough to remember him when he was playing, him and magic were truly something else. when he passes away and i hope that isn't in the near future, his epitaph should include the phrase "Bird hits it at the buzzer!" cos thats what he consistently did, so happy to see younger generations wake up to how great this man was.
Magic and Kareem say he's the best player they've ever faced. Bill Russell, Wilt, MJ, Kobe and Bron ranked Bird in their top 5 or top starting 5 You can't get better praise than that lol
I’m so happy you’re making this video. People talk about bird but don’t realize how good he was. I think he is the second greatest player of all time. I think he’s so underrated and just gets glazed over.
Gets glazed over by some, but glazed on by you. I love Bird, but to me he’s no higher than 4. I would personally have him in the 4-6 range which is still higher than most.
I don’t think anybody skips over Larry Bird. He gets placed late in the top 10 all time list. But he’s always there. He’s always placed above guys like KD. That said I’m always down for talking about ball history, but saying people skip the entire 80’s is absurd
Anyone that has bird outta their top 5 is disrespecting the game n this is coming frm a Lakers fan. The man is definitely one of thee greatest players to ever play the game. The greatest sf of all time as well no debate
I'm 55 this is cute. But this is also Accurate. One thing. Tiny Archibald was on that 81 Title tram. A mention would show a little knowledge. But you did a damn good job. Bird is a Demon. I got him at #2 behind only Jordan. Magic is my #3. LeBronze and Kobe aren't as high as you kids think.
The thing I always love to bring up about bird is how he bullied Jordan. Bird beat him 13 games in a row including sweeping him in the playoffs twice. He spoiled Jordan’s record 63 pt playoff game by beating him.
I never got the Magic vs Bird debate. While both were all around guys, only one was also great on both ends. But people get enamored with team based stats and “titles” over actually analyzing players. No real weakness in his game
Only MVP, COTY and EOTY winner. A legitimate master of every facet of the NBA. If he'd won a title as a coach or exec he'd be in my top 3. Russell is in my top 5 because of his last two player coach titles. Also the 86 Celtics went 40-1 at home, matched by the 16 Spurs.
A 32-win turnaround with the Celtics more than doubling their win total. LOL at Jordan jockers crying that Jordan didn't have teammates and that that is why he couldn't turn around his franchise right away or why JORDAN WAS SWEPT BY GOAT BIRD TWICE IN A ROW.
He’s my #1, I can understand why others don’t put him that high and it’s a fun argument to have. However, when you talk about the toughest players of all time, the guys that would play a full game without shoes on a court full of broken glass, there isn’t anyone even remotely close. Guys today are pansies when compared to Bird.
Imo the craziest stat is that he was top 4 in MVP votes *every* *single* *year* from '80-'88 straight, including his 3-straight back-to-back. Until his body gave out on him he was one of the best, if not the best, player in the league. When it comes to strictly play and abilities as a player, he's my GOAT. I'd take '84-'88 Bird over anyone including Jordan. Once you get into legacy, championships, etc. I understand why he's right behind Magic, sitting somewhere in the 5-10 spots on Mt. Rushmore.
I remember there was a game I saw as a kid and Larry Bird was in the crowd , and this was a while after he retired. During halftime they called him onto the court , blindfolded him and made him shoot a ball from one end of the court to the other. He totally made the shot it was amazing!! That dude was just born to play basketball.
Larry was so good that he got himself off the penny hardaway grant hill list. Think about it, his career shouldve been over but with one of the worst injuries ever he still balled the hell out. crazy
Larry didn't "hit" the 50/40/90 club, he was the founder. Before him, nobody thought this was possible. And he did it twice and almost over a five-year span. 4th (as a rookie), 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd. MVP rankings in his first eight years. Larry was the dominator of the 80s. "I feel like 42 tonight." To the Utah bench with John Stockton shortly before giving them exactly that.
You can look at minutes played for the Celtics in Bird's first season. The rotation was pretty much the same. You will see that most of the same players had the same amount of minutes. Basically, the only difference was Bird. Yep, he had a huge impact.
When Jordan and Magic say he was the best ever, I'll take their word for it. "Bird didn't need athleticism to jump over you, or speed to run around you. He had the best skills and basketball I.Q. ever, bar none."
@@irishgrl maybe as backup. But I don’t really trust players from back then. I think it’s a lot harder to stand out as elite in the modern era. I was thinking of swapping Bird with Dirk
Kareem stopped being the best player in 1980 after Kareem mosses was the best until 84 when Bird took the reigns until probably 88 when Jordan took over.
for the case against larry bird, i don't think longevity is the only thing. The celtics had a powerhouse team, especially looking at 1986. Of course mchale was great as a second star. But Robert Parish was insanely underrated and competed with the bigs of the era. Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge are also forgotten (ainge is a crazy gm tho). And they had Bill Walton, who won a chip with the blazers in the 70s and became their backup big.
Why is that held against him when Magic and Kareem played together in the West and in the East the 76ers had Dr J Darryl Dawkins Mo Cheeks Bobby Jones Lionel Hollins AND andrew toney...
@@bboywolf I don’t think Dr. J is really in the goat conversation. In terms of magic and kareem, that’s a valid point, until a couple of years into Magic’s career. Kareem essentially fell off and for most of the 80s he wasn’t a superstar. When magic arrived, it essentially became his team. James worthy exists, yes, but i think he isn’t as good as mchale or parish, personal opinion. That being said, Magic and Bird are in essentially the same spot for me in terms of the goat convo.
@@swahagod8369 my guy look at those Bulls teams and then look at those Celtic teams, Bird played with the greatest front court ever (Mchale and Parish + Walton) and DJ. He's goated but he's not the goat
@@swahagod8369Jordan put up the highest scoring playoff game against them and they still lost. That just shows how good the Celtics were and how bad the bulls were. It’s not as simple as Jordan vs Larry
Forever I will say Bird is better than magic he literally won MVP 3 seasons in a row which is much more impressive that winning 3 in general and he is better than magic in everything outside playmaking and he is still a great play maker and to me is 5 in the top 10 list
