I think the good part of having records on the scoreboard is if you go back months or years later for the highlights for whatever reason you don't have to lookup exactly where both teams were in that moment
@@jordanking6939 Nah, they don't even try to hide the gambling enticement like that. They literally give you the odds and have pundits pick against the odds on multiple shows including sometimes the lead up to that individual game.
@@Joshglazif the game is lions vs panthers and you don’t see a record vs seeing the panthers are 0-4 it’s easier to go “oh fvck I’ll bet against the panthers”
@@TransNFLGirl And if you are looking back on highlights in 7-8 weeks, or even a decade later, you'll know the context of what situation each team was in. Was it early in the season, were they struggling before this, did they start 7-0 only to face a hard reckoning on prime time, etc. etc. // I realize not everyone enjoys looking back on these things
I think showing the record is really important. When I see highlight clips from a few years ago, the first thing I look at is each teams record because I don't remember how good a particular team was from a few years ago. That and the casual fans definitely need to see the records.
Current CBS scoreboard is an alltimer. Very legible, doesn’t pull too much attention from the game, looks great, the solid color for the teams is very vibrant and sleek.
i like that they add teams records to it. makes it easier for casuals to know which team is a winner and which team is a loser LMAOO. all these score boards look nice but the MNF one looks the best
@@bennisford1712 CBS's way of letting you know is more subtle, but it does exist - the color of the down and yards on the right is the same as the team with possession.
What weird about NBC SNF graphics is that it worked for every sport except Football. MLB: Used the circle for the diamond, innings & and counts. NBA: Used circle for shot clock NHL: Used circle for Power Play
I like when at the end of the game, the record immediately updates. For some reason that is very satisfying to me, especially in a close, dramatic game
i feel like a factor that you overlooked entirely which shoulda really been talked about is what happens to the scoreboard after the team scores, like the effect that happens after a td or fg.
My favorite one was the old CBS one. It just had the city abbreviation and a white dot to show possession. I loved to watch the dot change sides after an interception
The dot was nice. I like the background matching the teams colors like CBS, NFLN, and ESPN have. NBC’s is also pretty legible. Fox and Prime are the worst in that regard
Any scorebug that uses a 'glow' of some sort gets my vote. I love the current MNF one. I'm also glad the networks have gone to the bigger numbers for the score itself.
Agree. The glowing timeout indicators on the previous NBC bug were very sleek. The current MNF one is great, but each season it moves further and further from the original art direction of the 2018 package conception which was fantastic.
This is the 2nd time in recent years FOX debuted their new NFL scoreboard in a Super Bowl, with the 1st time being Super Bowl 54 (ironically, the Chiefs also won that Super Bowl). FOX only tweaked the 2014-16 scoreboard in Super Bowl 51 to where it's more 2D than what it was before, so that doesn’t really count as a change to me. CBS and NBC tend to introduce their new NFL scoreboards whenever they host the Super Bowl, but for some odd reason, CBS decided to keep the scoreboard from Super Bowl 50 when they broadcasted Super Bowl 53. They finally changed their scoreboard in Super Bowl 55, but it looks like a more 2D version of the Super Bowl 50/53 scoreboard than anything else. I love the new touchdown animation, though. As for ESPN, I was never the biggest fan of their NFL scoreboards, but I absolutely love their newest scoreboard that debuted in the Bills-Jets game. I think ABC shares the same NFL scoreboard as ESPN, but I could be wrong. ESPN and ABC are set to host Super Bowl 61, so we’ll have to wait and see if their scoreboard will change for that big game.
pretty much a mid cycle refresh, they introduced a new one in 2019 and it lasted 4 seasons, but the current one they introduced this year is ok, pretty much the same one as 2019, probably gonna last until after the 2026 season which is also 4 seasons starting with 2023 and probably gonna introduce a new one in 2027 for the super bowl, hopefully the super bowl is joe bucks and troy aikmans last game on espn/abc cus they got 4 more seasons on their espn contracts and everybody hates them, i wish they were back at fox
Excellent post. Just when I think I’m alone in being a fan of noticing the smallest details of the game, the internet connects us all lol. I was surprised that fox went with the “debut in the Super Bowl” model after years of not doing so. I personally loved the modified one they used for SB51. It was much easier to read than the one used from 2014-2016. One addition I wanted to make: FOX debuted a new scorebug in 1998 (my personal favorite). They then used a modified shinier? Version ONLY for Super Bowl 33. Then reverted to the regular season/1998 playoffs version for the 1999 season. Then in 2000 used a different modified version which was more silver than grey.
I thought I was the only one that noticed or cared abt shit like this 😭 but I love when a network debuts a new scoreboard during the Super Bowl I wish they did every year . I always get disappointed when they use the same one, it makes the game feel less special
I liked 2010-2011 a lot. They were basically the same but 2011’s was smaller and more sleek. 2012-2013 were also nice and simple. Personally my favorite was 1998-2000 lol
When the nfl switched Monday/Sunday night football before 2006, they decided to focus on Sunday night as the prime slot of the week. Prior to that, MNF was the feature game of the week on abc. ESPN’s SNF had the “B tier” matchups (though ESPN’s MNF had some rough scheduling in the 2010s) Since 2006, NBC’s SNF definitely has the better matchups by design.
ESPN MNF also for a long time got shafted by scheduling because the NFL could flex better games to Sunday Night later in the season, but MNF didn't get this treatment until, actually this season will be the first season that MNF gets flexed games.
NBC need to change their scoreboard back to the last one or to the current big10 one. CBS needs to make the colors pop out more and actually show player images when showing the starting lineups.
I remember when the score bug first showed up, and thought how cool it was. I remember how frustrating it would be, turning on a game part way through, and not being able to know the score for several minutes, until a commercial break, or until the announcer actually said what the score was. But as time has gone on, and these score bugs and graphics have filled more and more of the screen, I have come to detest them. I will watch a game from the 80's, and just think to myself, this is so much better, not having all this clutter on the screen.

Just to add a fun fact, these are technically called "scorebugs" by broadcast professionals. The distinction is important because during games, updates to the "scoreboard" refer to the physical boards inside the venue, while updates to the "scorebug" refer to the on-screen graphical element.
NBC, during the 1997 season, was the last network to not use scoreboards. Dick enberg, don criqui, marv albert, charlie jones, tom hammond, jim lampley. Those guys were some amazing ass commentators
I actually really like the Amazon Prime Thursday Night score graphic. It reads clearly, has all the relevant information that football fans care about, and doesn't take too much space or feel cluttered. I agree that we don't need the "TNF", but it really isn't bad.
I agree that CBS has had the best scoreboards for NFL games for probably the past decade or so. My all-time favorite scoreboard is from 2004-2005 on Fox with the little dot matrix displays, although I think that particular one worked better with MLB games than it did with NFL games
I enjoyed NBC's previous two on-screen graphics for football. Their 2015 insert package redesign is my personal favorite and I've recreated the entire package on my personal computer, including their corporately private font.
One thing you may notice on these graphics, especially CBS is they're making and optimizing them more for digital and web viewing; such as the recent logo update ABC did... that's probably part of why CBS went flat instead of 3D... NBC usually has good graphics, and theirs is OK. I think the circle thing is an attempt to emulate the moon because it's at night... with FOX, when the graphic comes in & out, you notice the eyes of the "Cleatus robot" before the score pops up for a brief moment, and same in reverse when it goes away for stats or a commercial block, so that's where the odd shape comes. ESPN is nice, but they just need to shrink it down a bit. I don't care if the black bar goes side to side, it just look like the fonts and shapes are too big!! Only other thing is that I like that they're at least going back to a 3D type look, and I think that CBS should do the same; they're probably due for an update within the next year or 2 anyway.
I love having the records on the scoreboard ESPECIALLY in college football . plus it helps when u go back and watch highlights years later 2 remember where the teams were
A note on the ESPN scoreboard is that the "down & to go" indicator (where "Monday Night Football" is on your screen grab) has the same team color "lighting" that the logo bars do, so you can tell who has the ball at a glance during a sideline or commentator cutaway without looking for some kind of arrow indicator. As for the broadcasters pimping themselves (TNF, Monday Night Football, the NBC peacock, etc.) that's never going away. Any time anyone screengrabs one of their broadcasts, that's free advertising.
Maybe nostalgia is clouding my judgement, but I think score bugs peaked around 2009. FOX’s still spread across the top of screen and just had a very distinct ‘FOX’ look about it - albeit it didn’t show timeouts, so that would be one change I would make to it today. CBS introduced their first ‘wide’ bug centered at the top of the screen that year but still paired it with the old NFL on CBS graphics that were awesome (remember the logo beating like a heart?). NBC’s SNF bug seemed futuristic at the time and looked great. I would love to see an NFL season where those three networks’ bugs from that era are restored in some capacity, albeit with a few minor adjustments to make them ‘modern.’ The only bug from today I would keep is ESPN’s. It’s pretty slick and gives me vibes of the old SNF bugs. I would also restore the logo branding of ‘NFL on CBS’ and ‘NFL on FOX.’ The current logos displaying ‘CBS NFL’ and ‘FOX NFL’ have always looked weird and out of place to me.
i have always loved scoreboards, since i can remember them not always being there and it being so annoying as a kid not remembering the timeouts or score or whatever
The one fox had was really good and then they wanted to make it bigger?? Those old MNF scoreboard were pretty bland but it was cool seeing the score of the team increase after they scored some points.
The SNF scoreboard reeks of MNF from 2006. It had not quite a circle but like a squircle with the team stuff jutting out the side just like this SNF board. Also the old long bar was better, but that's because I prefer short and wide scoreboards and for a while in like 2017-18 there was only this and it was pristine, chef's kiss.
Watching that osu vs nd game I hated the whole nbc setup we had severe weather alerts that blocked the down and distance a few times I thought a team got a 1st down but they just made it back to the og line of scrimmage
I honestly don't mind the current Amazon TNF scoreboard, I think it looks pretty sleek. My only issue with it is that there is no indicator as to which team is on offense. This might seem like an insignificant detail, but I like having some sort of possession indicator on the scoreboard. I agree that the FOX one looks clunky as hell and that the circle for the NBC one kinda ruins it. The previous scoreboard version for both FOX and NBC were some of my favorite scoreboards ever, so I'm kinda sad that their replacements are so disappointing.
I wish they would get rid of all graphics or have a button you can at least turn them off. With all the devices it is so unnecessary to have some big score or graphics take up the screen. Problem with the ones at the top are during the play if the operator would zoom in or out it would go right through the middle of the play. Bottom is better but they just need a little simple one in the bottom corner or something.
I would disagree and say the NBC one is the best. Not only does the circle display a ton of info (clock, play clock, quarter), but it also adds a center that the board can be focused around, which I think looks super clean. I like how the rings not only display possession but also indicate the remaining play clock and light up yellow when there's a flag. In addition, I resent the notion that displaying records is a bad idea. Not only does it save me from having to google their records, but it is also nice when watching replays of prior years' games to gauge teams' performance at that point.
Sunday Night is the marquee match-up of the week. By contract. NBC took that from ABC/ESPN's Monday Night Football. That was a handful of years ago at this point.
I like the CBS one the most tbh, the abbreviation + logo is nice and overall it's clean and not too big. And you don't really need to see the record of each team, that should be brought up at the start of the game and post game, it isn't something that needs to be present all game long...
The Fox and NBC scoreboard seem that they’re trying to hard to be futuristic, and I hate it. My biggest issue tho is not being able to see the timeouts on the ESPN and Prime scoreboards
