Look, I’ve never been one to believe in curses.. but there’s a lot more truth to this than you’d think. Instrumentals By: LCS: / @lcsprod Yondo Beats: / jethalebeats Epidemic Sounds: www.epidemicsound.com/
The same thing was discovered way back when by the NHL’s goalies. The masks offered a layer of protection that gave their goalies the ability to play at a level without a fear of being injured. The first goalie to wear one was clowned on, but the moment the other teams saw how he no longer feared the potential facial injuries and outperformed everyone, EVERY goalie from there on wore a mask. There isn’t some curse or majik ju-ju from these NBA masks. It’s simply giving the players more courage to take more risks because of their new layer of physical protection.
Interesting effect really. Studies have shown that drivers who recieved an extra training tend to cause more accidents because they think they are more capable now and drive more reckless. I think there's a similar effect going on here. The mask protects them and there is less chance of further injury. Plus the boosted confidence. On the enemy's side you also have 3 things to consider. 1: The mask is a sign of injury. So going at it full force would be poor sportsmanship So the first couple of games the enemy players probably held back 2: Pressure. Masked players are known to perform great deeds. Going up against one is sure to cause a whole lot of pressure because everyone expects you to lose. 3: Supersticion. The player stepping on and trying to break the mask is a sign of somewhat believing in said curse turning this into a selffulfilling prophicy. If the player believes he can not win as long as his oponent is wearing a mask he dooms himself to failure.
It's simple psychology, wearing a mask makes them feel protected, and therefore likely to play more aggressively and take more risks. Get everyone to wear masks and the game will be better for it. Better yet, try an experiment, get them to play in football gear.
Realistically, probably two reasons. One, as you said, all eyes are on the person wearing the mask. Two, players probably feel like they have an extra layer of protection and feel like they're invincible, especially looking at the history of the mask.
Third for me would be opponents don’t wanna re-injure whoever is wearing the mask so they don’t make much contact and don’t play as hard against them as they would a normal player
A1 video dog i dont watch much basketball cause im more of a football person but this video was so well made for people who aren’t entirely into basket ball but who still have intrests and because of this video i might start watchin more basket ball. Fantastic job brotha!!!

I think its definitely people feeling more impervious and confident with the mask. But at the same time I'm sure just looking at it is distracting for the opponents which throw off their game
@Bender Bending Rodriguez Dude the basic masks were never meant to protect you. They are meant to keep your aerosolized breath from infecting others if you have covid. You can do a basic home test of this with petri dishes and compare mask on with mask off if you don't believe me. If you cough with a mask there will be way less bacterial growth.
Wearing a mask makes them feel they are the spotlight so they get hype coz they are the center of attraction, humble enough to play aggressively.. But still this dudes are insanely good without a mask on..its not the mask but the confidence the mask give to them
Few possibilities: - They played harder because they felt safer. - The other players were easier on them because they didn't want to hurt them. - The masks are subconsciously intimidating causing their opponents to play more passively. - Those wearing the mask makes them play harder because they want to live up to the legend. Could be a mixture of these things or just a coincidence.
The masks makes them feel bruise-proof. They can go headfirst towards the opposing team, as they know can't be touched. Meanwhile, the opposing team is also trying to keep distance to avoid hitting the masked baller. In conclusion, the mask makes the wearer feel bulletproof.
That gives me an idea. Trying to break the mask didnt help. So if you cant beat the curse, and you know the team you are gonna play has a masked man, just come out on the court with your entire team wearing masks. lol
I think other players were more likely to look at the mask, instead of a player. Like its so unique, that you instictivly look at it. If your opponents are a bit desoriented, you feel "safer" and everything is easier for you, becouse your opponents are a bit worse. Imagine walking on sidewalk and passing somebody with blue hair. Even if you dont care/dont want to look, you still gona look at him/her. Same with mask.
It’s because humans are the most advanced “computer” in existence. When you put something over your face like a helmet or a mask you feel like you’ve got a shell and like you can operate at full capacity with the exterior protection. Why do you think football players have so much swagger and tenacity while all geared up?
I remember when playing little league football, putting my helmet on was just the start, putting my mouth piece in was a whole different story, I played right tackle and for an entire game because I was so hyped all I heard was my name kept getting announced for tackling the quarterback behind the line and if something made me mad I was just that much better.
I have 2 reasons why it might me then play better. 1. Enemy team doesn't want to reinjure them 2. The player with the mask can take more contact then normal
@@alexthedio It's psychological effect. Just like how a Markmans shooter can 100% hit the center of a target card but 100% missed the center if an 100million white vase is put 5m away to the left of the target card in a 50m shooting distance.
Added confidence from plosiba you mentioned all the players are quite good for their level of play. Give em a double shot of confidence and watch em turn legendary
I feel like an unfamiliar pressure around the face makes for better focus. It’s like how good fitting (yet unrestrictive) clothing makes you feel energized.
@@devillif311 nah, the mask is for the safety of the players, i think it would be even better for the players as those facial injuries would stop happening and they would feel safer while playing, therefore playing even better without the fear of getting hit
Man don’t I miss Rip Hamilton. I’ve been a Detroit fan all my life. I actually got to meet that entire Championship team when I was a kid! It was amazing! I miss that old lineup!
I wear a mask with a smile for hours at a time Stare at the ceiling while I hold back what's on my mind And when they ask me how I'm doing I say, "I'm just fine" And when they ask me how I'm doing I say, "I'm just fine" But the fact is I can never get off of my mattress And all that they can ask is "Why are you so sad, kid?" (Why are you so sad, kid?)
I mean, it's just like with hockey masks, it's almost like, when ya aren't as afraid to take a hit to the face from a high speed object you can perform a bit better!
Probably similar to American football and how all that padding/protection likely makes them more reckless in heavy hits and tackles (along with how the game works) vs something like rugby where there's no protection so tackles are done differently.
I think the 1st person to wear the mask thought they had extra protection and felt motivated to go all out and as time passed along with memes and myths players started to think the mask has powers kind of like a placebo
*From a coincidence into a legancy...* I mean, look at these names being mention just from getting out of an injury and popping of. Definitely the spotlight... When they knew there's more people expecting 'em to CLUTCH UP for looking different. they actually took off EVERYTIME...
I have said for many years that most professional sports are woefully under using proper protection. ANd I mean all the big ones : Baseball, soccer, basketball, but especially football; it still has a lot of room for improvement of its defensive equipment.
I find the fact that players are only "allowed" to wear these things AFTER they've already broken their face and ONLY during their recovery is astonishing to me.
They should just wear full pads and body armor because it will prevent injuries to the rest of their bodies. They should be out there looking like medieval knights because it’s preventative. The reality is they make enough money to get injured occasionally. If you offered me 10 million to break my nose I’d do it for you.
@@BB-ed4om lil late to the party but we aren’t talking about making masks compulsory however it shouldn’t be against the rules to wear one if you aren’t injured. Same way rugby players have the option to wear head gear. Don’t have to. A nice option for some.
Dude hes not talkin about ppl who wear the mask kobe is goated without the mask he did 81 points before him wearing mask he did the same scores westbrook les aggressive with mask
You should go over the madden curse, its like legit real. Almost all of the football players that was on the madden covers disappeared, got Injured, and just going crazy. pretty much EVERY player.
Caramba que video incrivel, eu ia falar que vou usar mascara para jogar melhor o basquete, mas meio que ja faço isso na pandemia então sou ruim de qualquer jeito valeu vito pela recomendação 😁👍
As frequent and serious the face injuries are in basketball, I'm surprised masks aren't issued as an option to [all] players. Best way to deal with an injury afterall is to not have it happen in the first place.
NO. In 100 years I’ve never seen someone deformed from playing ball. A broken nose is serious but if someone goes for a dunk and hits their head from getting bumped it could be life ending. So should they wear helmets?
@@historyZZ I never set mine myself, but you can see the difference from one side to the other. Left side looks great, right side look f**king stupid. It put new meaning to having a 'good side' for pictures for me.
I always thought a mask makes you see the persons eyes and not their expression, because a team mate knows "those eyes" the enemy just met you and thinks you are going left.
It's a confidence thing they feel like they are protected or like they stand out from the crowd. It's why supervisors get how they do with their walkie talkies.
it seems like a combination of self confidence and the effect the mask's have on an opponent, may it be an internal self caution due to knowing they are wearing due to injury, or be it the concept of the curse. as that one game where the team went in ready to play hard against the mask causes the mask player to be less self confident as they focused him as well as the team being more focused on him, once someone showed they feared the mask by trying to break it, the masks confidence came back and the fear of the curse over took the enemy team again. it really just seems like mental play, like a mind game.
It's probably due to a sense of safety the mask provides, like a placebo that gives the player a little more confidence. This can be seen in other sports such as head gear in rugby.
Hamilton is a simple case of gaining confidence and fully committing to plays without the fear of getting hurt. It's amazing what something so simple can do to make people believe in themselves more to achieve thier full potential 😁
It's what safety equipment does. It happened with Football and Boxing too. Football didn't originally require helmets, but once the players were required to wear them, there was an upward trend in head injuries because players were feeling more secure taking more risks with their bodies and played more aggressively due to the extra safety equipment. Likewise, with boxing, the thicker more padded gloves actually tend to lead to worse injuries because the fighters cant judge their punching strength as much and subconsciously exert more force due to the padding. I imagine with these masks, the issue is two-fold. First, the player wearing the mask feels more protected so they're subconsciously going to push themselves a bit more. Slipping in to an opening where they might hesitate slightly due to the chance of catching an elbow to the face or getting knocked down. While the opposing players might be a bit more hesitant to be aggressive toward that player, either due to sympathy due to the obvious injury, like hesitating to push past someone wearing a cast on their arm. And since basketball is generally a no-contact sport where you dont take the kinds of injuries like in football or boxing, these little hesitancies and being more likely to take risks, even if its very minor change, could make a huge difference at this level of play.
Spartans wore masks and helmets designed to tunnel their vision and shallow their view. This eliminated distractions and some of the fear during the battle. Full concentration on what's in front of them, only focusing on the threat ahead while their stance and shield protected the man on their left, or this is just like Blinkers on a horse.
Everyone in this section said that it was because of the sense of protection it gave them but the first thing I thought of was horse blinders. Lowers their peripheral vision so they don't see the crowd when focused on the net and can only see what's in front of them.
Anyone who has done manual labor such as throwing and stacking firewood with and without gloves can attest that protective equipment that is comfortable can make you more effective.
Imagine how a football player would play if you took away their helmet… Or how a driver would drive if you had a loaded gun pointed at their head with a hair trigger… If you perceive your situation to be more safe, you take more risks, if more risky, you keep it safe.
In my church league I was really bad at basketball but my stepmom gave me this necklace and it made me relax more and I was able to play better with it on
It might be for 3 things, player going into zone when he wears the mask because the can't see down much, second defenders get distracted with the mask like split of second and that's enough for NBA player, or they are going easy on him unconsciously, or maybe the 3 happens at once
I think because of the first nba player to wear it and be “cursed” it gave the rest confidence to try new things as they think the mask will also change the way they play
