That lot are rapidly coming up into competition with the fascists for worst people on earth. And I say that as a man who spent substantial amounts of time punching fascists in the face. The Incels have squalid little hate groups and they absolutely plan atrocities and sometimes carry them out. They egg each other on into rapes and harassment and assault. The very idea of a kindly friendly man being able to interact happily with women is offensive to them, because they are incapable of it. It's easier for them to hate decent people than to expend the effort to become decent people themselves, and deep down they KNOW thats what truly makes them worthless: That they don't actually dare to not be worthless.

They'd look exactly like any normal person. Do you think it takes more than five minutes out of someone's day to say something bad on the internet? The very idea that they must be so radically different from normal is exactly what allows such things to flourish so easily. It's the same with any social maladjustment, or hatred, or bigotry. The idea that 'bad must look bad' is harmful to your ability to actually notice bad actors in your social circles.

@@Szriko Stalking people and actively trying to keep up with their online presence wherever they go and trying to find people's home adress is not a normal thing to do. I'm not taking about people just leaving mean comments. I'm not even talking about finding paper trails of someone's decade+ presence on the internet just because they're curious. I'm talking about the people who do it incessantly over the course of years every week, actively seeking out personal channels to directly communicate with the target instead of a random comment that would be lost in the masses of other voices. You can be a literal saint, and someone out there will hate you unfoundedly. Someone out there will dislike your personality, attitude, presentation, ideals, or whatever else they are judging you on... but you are the one putting it out there for people to judge. It would be unreasonable to assume you will only get positive feedback. So if you can't handle the nasty side of it by ignoring opinions you yourself disagree with, best stay away from doing the thing that got you those responses. Most importantly though... They wanted to court some of that ad revenue, and that legitimacy as a media service instead of just an 'internet thing'. Part of that deal was, no doubt, making it seem like that content belonged here, despite it's rejection by some big enough portion of the youtube user base that wasn't interested, or didn't want to see creators who started here get muscled out by rich, corporate content creation. I've seen this happen so much too and cancel culture just gets furthered and allowed still. When Hogwarts Legacy came out people were making lists of anyone streaming it or making content on it and sending out death threats, causing problems, etc. All because apparently if you play that game you support everything J.K Rowling has ever said that's "transphobic" when nothing she has said is actually transphobic. What she has *basically* said is that if you're transgender you still are whatever you were born as and labelling yourself as something else *dating* wise is rude. Which I completely agree with. If you're transgender I could care less if you exist, if you're happy, etc. You can do whatever you want.. but if you're on a dating app advertising yourself as male and aren't really male where it counts that's pretty rude. I've seen people get their careers ruined on RU-vid just because people push and push for things. Turps and Sjin from the Yogscast were like that. They constantly had rabid fans accusing them of things like talking with underage girls, sexual harassment, etc. Meanwhile nothing was ever founded but of course since there were accusations they'd have to be investigated every single time.. so eventually they just quit and said they're done. Then all those rabid fans acted like they were justified and suddenly Turps and Sjin are guilty.. no.. you forced them out of the job they love to do because you kept repeatedly accusing them of things and putting them through hell.. that doesn't mean you're right nor justified - far from it. Thing is too there are legitimate issues that need to be fought but here these idiots are causing problems where they don't exist just to try and act like they're so high and mighty. Meanwhile they're the bullies. Like the people sending out death threats over these things.. how does that make you any better than what you *think* you're fighting against? You can't fight fire with fire.. you also don't get to call everything whatever you want. I'm sick of being called things like transphobic or homophobic just because I don't 100% agree on a topic yet I have no problem with trans people nor homosexual people. What's even more funny is being a gay male getting called homophobic.. "cancel culture" needs to be destroyed and not allowed. We need serious harsh punishment for it. It needs to be labelled as cyber bullying as well as defamation. Like you said, these people sending death threats, sending packages, etc all need to be treated as a cyber terrorist and sued for defamation as well. Its pretty sad when a guy expresses general interest in the other gender that its called misogynistic. Not only is it the exact oposite of what the term means it also shows that there is a general incapabillity for both men and women to accept that reality. Its why men express a foolish idea of feeling boxed in and unable to approach the other gender because that pressure put on other people for any expression in that regard is visible, even if the hostility is usually stupid. This "trolling" is also usually not actual trolling, as actual trolling is a communal effort and the consequences would actually be funny to a larger group then the one doing it. Nobody will look back on this and find it an interesting internet curiosity, its only mean spirited and runs almost too closely to what domestic terrorism is... Sincerity might be nice too but the issue is that if somebody is sincere and not positive it will still come off as very hostile to creators and other users of a fanspace aswell. I think people who actually take issue with creators don't feel like they can do anything with Criticism regardless of how it is put despite that often not being true too. This behaviour to these people will simply seem more succesful because actually going through the route of normal discourse is going to put them through displeasure while this won't give them any emotions at all.

I never understood the whole harrassment angle. I remember once when I was in my late teens or early 20s growing up in Pennsylvania, I was at a diner with some friends, and John Travolta was there. He was filming some movie (I think it was called Lucky Numbers, I never watched it) and was eating after they finished recording for the day. I was there with my friends and they were all trying to get up the nerve to go talk to him. I could tell he was getting close to his last nerve with people just walking up to him, so I threw my weight around and told my friends to leave him alone and let him eat or else they would need to find another ride home (I was the designated driver that night). I remember the look of relief on his face when he heard me say that as I was pushing them out the door. The point is, whether they are big name actors or content creators who think they are smaller or less important than they are, they are all still just people like any of us. My godson started releasing content a while ago and I subscribed to his channel, but within the first 5 or 10 videos he had so many people telling him that his videos sucked that I think he quit because I haven't seen anything else. I'll admit, they weren't the best edited videos, but I kept telling him both what I liked about each and what could make the videos better in my opinion. He followed my advice for a couple of them, but I know he was reading the negative comments much more than the positive ones. All that to say, it is very simple. If you like the message but think the delivery is cringe, don't be an asshole. Just give constructive criticism and move on. If you don't like the content, then you can just fuck right off and find something you do like. Either way, and whether you like the creator or not, there is absolutely zero reasons to harrass someone. But what do I know. The issue with just saying "harassment is wrong" is that oftentimes the people responsible for these things KNOW that it's wrong and don't care at all. Call me a conspiracy theorist here, but the harassment JoCat has faced over the past two years because of "I Like Girls" fit right into the archetype of the KF/4chan types who have been launching attacks against trans people for over a decade. They find someone who's popular and marginalized (or at least vocally supportive of marginalized people) and come up with a fake, progressive-sounding reason to attack them. False abuse allegations, labeling them a bigot... specifics don't matter. They make a big fuss, get a bunch of well-meaning but uninformed people to hop on the bandwagon, and make it LOOK like all the harassment is being spurred on by "progressives". Then, when the target of the harassment snaps and leaves the public sphere (or worse), the instigators get to sit back and watch it spin into a scandal about Evil Internet SJWs getting mad at something harmless and hurting an innocent person because they hate men who like women or whatever. As JoCat himself pointed out, there have been multiple waves of harassment over this video going back over a year. The doxxing and mail threats happened months ago. But there are now people "counter-harassing" a trans woman who they think is responsible for it all because she happened to make a post poking fun at the video with zero intent of doing harm. Whoever it is that actually started the harassment initially, I have a feeling this is exactly the outcome they wanted.
@MoonLitChild
@MoonLitChild 8 месяцев назад
I don't doubt it at all. There are definitely groups that go out of their way to find in-roads to harassing people they don't like, whether it's for harmlessly poking fun at a cute video or tracking down one person's "bad take" and harassing them off the internet. I don't think you can separate that type of behavior from behavior that's encouraged when someone is on the road to being violently radicalized one way or the other, either. Like, as a queer person, my thought, from experience with these certain types of people is that the ones who went fuckstruck rabid were the ones that literally buy into the idea that being straight is 'cringe.' It started as a joke but took five minutes for people to blame everything bad in the world on "the straights" and really letting rip on anyone who might occasionally remind people that they're straight-- and not just in cute song-- anything deemed "too" heterosexual. That's my theory on the whole thing. Straight guy reminds random strangers that he's straight, random strangers with very misplaced rage issues go batshit. Don't get me wrong, I think a lot of trolls do come from the conservative end of the spectrum, but holy shit there are some fucked up queer liberals.

The internet is vile, if you reach enough people. I recently made a comment on a hair care method, that I tried and hadn't worked for me. Mostly as an experience, so other people know, that it doesn't work for everyone and don't lose sleep over it not working for them. Got a few thousand likes, I guess some people had the same experience. Didn't think it was even something to be debated, since it was my real life experience. Got shat all over. People made assumptions about my eating habits and how I properly didn't do it right bla bla bla. First I answered them, then I edited the comment to add in the "FAQ". Then I only kept getting hate. Over. Fkn. Hair. It felt fkn horrible and it wasn't more than a few dozen nasty comments, was all speculative and had no real life consequences. Now to imagine how someone with thousands of followers, especially a genuinely friendly and positive person like JoCat, would have to deal with thousands much worse reactions. I hate it. I hate it so much. I hate it to a degree, where I am beginning to think the anonymity on the internet may not be justified. I usually stay off of the internet for most everything that is "cringe" and "signaling." Not because of the content that people say are those things, but because of the people themselves. The slaves to the internet that hate everything. I've seen dozens upon hundreds of videos that joke about women, men, and anything in-between that are treated as harmless jokes, when some can be truly problematic in the deepest sense, and yet a 30 second video, where a STRAIGHT MAN says he loves WOMEN for all different reasons, personalities, and body types, is completely ridiculed for being "cringe, problematic, and virtue signaling." Truly amazing. Just another reason to stay off the internet.

There's a very necessary discussion around the burden of discourse (not Dungeons & Discourse, of course) on social media platforms that big companies (Meta, Twitter/X, Google) really need to take on. They can no longer say "We're just a digital town square" when they literally have algorithms that reinforce certain viewpoints and behaviors. Just as it would be reasonable to ask a crazy person ranting about lizard people running the town's daycare to leave this Wendy's, so too is it reasonable to bounce repeat offender trolls whose sad life's mission is to harass and harangue strangers in order to feel some tiny little spark of attention and existential validation.

People are going to say that 'bluh, everything is about trans people' on this, I am sure. But if you make content even *tangentially* related to *anything* transgender, you will face targeted hate campaigns. This goes if you are a trans creator, streamer, or run charity drives. And I do mean targeted. This follows the kiwifarms MO so hard that it would almost *surprise* me if it wasn't related to it. You'll get hate raided on streams to the point where you have to shut off not only the chat, but access to your discord server, and disable any streamlabs notifications. They send deaththreats, doxx you, photoshop fake things about you, go after your employer and landlord, try to get at your family, etc. It's fucking insane right now. It's not that it can only be because of trans stuff, it's that it's so fucking close to what is happening to most online trans creators right now.
