The danger of Revivalism - Kingdomcraft 

As a Gen Z, the holy spirit brought me to Christ when I started reading about old post classical philosophy. I read the Corpus Hermeticum, which is theologically close to Christianity. I also learned about Stoicism and the Logos, which is when it clicked for me. The Word is the Logos, and the Logos is the rational order of the universe. Jesus Christ is the rational order of the universe in flesh! I started watching content about Christianity (particularly yours and InspiringPhilosophy's). I am going to an Anglican church this Sunday for the first time in my life! Thank you for your amazing videos and God bless you!!

I still think we need a revival, one of curiosity and intellectualism. During the Second great awakening at the prestigious colleges in the north, there was a reawakening of the mind where students were rediscovering the beauty of Christianity through studying and pondering. This is the opposite of all the recent revivals. All these churches are trying to cause a revival with the youth through emotional music and sermons. They don't realize that the youth are starving for some good solid theology. Us zoomers aren't all emotion. We need logical reasons to keep the faith. We need a method. It's why so many zoomers are turning to Eastern Orthodoxy or Catholicism.

I just think we should preach the Gospel and make disciples. If we do that, God will take care of the rest.

I have no idea what to do anymore. All the churches in my area believe in divorce, gay marriage, abortion, or other stuff I was always opposed to. Not even my old Roman catholic church is the same anymore.😢

My family participated in church zealously for decades. But about 6 years ago we had to move states, and haven't found a new church to attend since. Part of the reason for that is that, we all agreed we were exhausted with how stagnant church felt. We'd have amazing "revival" services (though really it was a catch-all term for services out of the norm), or even regular service would pop off... then nothing would change. Everything went back to routine. Some things even got worse. And it gave us church burnout. So in that respect, I can totally understand how someone might see the powerful spirituality that exists in a revival bubble, only to get disillusioned by the reality of church. That said, the "revival" or revival-esque services are the main ones that have stuck with me my entire life. So they obviously are tapping into something that modern christianity is missing.

I think it's funny that you're building a church in minecraft while I just started playing it again before finding your channel. I've also been building some myself but nowhere to near your scale! I built mine for villagers so they stop worshiping whatever false magic idol they have in their pagan temples lol Anyways you mentioned a revival in the church and from experience I think that covid has had a huge part here in Chicago where new Catholic young adult groups have been bussin for the last couple years. From salsa dance groups to sports and ofcourse Bible studies, we're out here in as an open secret but also a little divided with the trad and lib cats but overall can enjoy each other's company!

If your looking for another game to do a series like this on I would recommend Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Some of the mechanics can be hard to get down but once you master them the game becomes very easy.

Watching this video 3 months late. How people called what happened at asbury a “revival” is beyond me. I bet 99% of those people are still the same as they were before. To me, it just looked like people getting emotional to worship music, which is normal because the music is beautiful in itself. They felt the emotion of the event, but they weren’t changed in spirit.

There is no real revival without repentance and reformation. The methods of "Revivalism" is to culturally contextualize Christian worship. It can be a wonderful door into the Church for those who find historic Christianity too overpowering. However if it doesn't lead to historic Christianity, then something has gone terribly wrong.

I appreciate the video. The thing that’s most important to me is having the proper discernment when encountering any type of ‘revival’ event. Our church hosted a group last week that led worship, ministry, prayer, etc. in a way that honestly rejuvinated my pursuit of Christ. However I’ve also been around other events prior to this one that had the same goal, but that the path to get there was not rooted in the fundamentals of true Christianity (in my opinion). Be a healthy skeptic. Question (or better yet, wrestle) what they feed you. You’ll know which events open the gates to fulfillment and which ones that only give you a ‘spiritual high’, just for you to go back to your old ways.

The most frustrating thing about people especially in older generations is the inability to verify if something's title matches it's content. It's a self made trojan horse.

I agree with many of your points but I do not agree with when you said that the cause of Christendom's decline was because of revivals. This appears to me to be similar to saying "The Western Roman Empire collapsed because people tried to reconquer parts if its former land." Just because Christendom was beginning to fall during the time when revivals began, this does not mean that it was because of revivals that Christendom began to decline in the west. The revivals only happened as a attempted and, admittedly failed, attempt to restore the church to its previous position. I would argue that the decrease in the authority of the church over society was a longer process that had been in movement from long before the revivals. I may have made a crucial mistake however, as I am not really knowledgable about Theology enough to debate this with you. I'm just interested in what yours and anyone else in the comments opinions on this would be.

Too many Evangelicals think that by being sophisticated and intellectual prevents church/theology from having spiritual meaning and life … as if God isn’t the epitome of both!

Hey man, do you mind making a “Why I am Not a Pentecostal” video? My family isn’t really part of a denomination but we’ve been leaning towards it between it and Baptist for four or so generations. You’ve frequently brought up that you have some big problems with it so I was wondering what those problems could be

Personally I don't know a massive amount about baptism (was raise evangelical now non-denom which yeah people call me baptist) but choosing to be baptised or not, is based on a freewill of the holy spirit and to have an intimate connection with the holy spirit. I think I get the idea with Transgenderism but unlike baptism transgenderism is politically charged with major consequences that people refuse to talk about.

Anabaptists are in no way individualists, they are communitarians, in interpretation also. I'd say individualism is more of a product of modernity, even though strands of protestantism obviously had somewhat of a role in fostering the autonomous individual.

My understanding of revival is that someone can't be re-vived unless he's already alive and just in a kind of dead state. So it would be a movement of people who are already Christian back to Christ and the Gospel. If people are saved, that's great, but that's not "re" vival.

The idea that traditon is bad comes from traditional faith not being personal, which it should be. Same is with being baptized. Being baptized should be a personal choice, not because this world is egocentric, but because letting The holy spirit into your heart is only your choice to make. Jesus won't press you into that :P Faith is the relation with you and God.

As a Catholic, I find some of the revival trends to be nice but overall like you I find them to be disruptive and destructive to the Christian study in general. I think a good analogy to use would be that The church is like a train. Sometimes there’s not a lot of passion for it and people get lazy about it. Which is similar to a train running low on call. Instead of thinking about things to do and how to get more coal, the revival mentality is it take your own train cars chop them up and use them for fuel. Yes that gets you to the station AK sometimes for some people salvation, but overall you’re ruining the train a.k.a. the church

I believe things happen in certain way for a reason. We should not force change but be a positive influence to the ones around us.

I thought that revivals started in England, Scotland, and Wales. During the era of Westley and such. And the two main pushes were Methodism, and puritanism. Although, a lot of smaller groups like society of friends(Quakers) also came out of that. So, in back then awakenings did form long lasting churches and in the mid-term seem to have made a difference. Notably, many of the groups that came out of that were significantly anti-slavery. While the Anglican and Episcopal churches they separately ended up going mostly apostate. And most of the Puritans originally weren't separatist. But, rather simply wanted to reform the Anglican church while preserving it's authority and status. Overall, I attribute the extreme decline of Anglican churches to the fact that their governance was subject to secular authority. Even today, many priests there are given appointments by secular government leaders. None of other the mainline churches today are currently in that kind of position. Although, the Episcopalians are in a pretty rough spot. Overall, I view one of the core sparks of revival to be the mass mobilization of lay folk for evangelism empowered by the blessing of the Holy Spirit. And part of that in my view is getting moderate Christian in mainline churches. I think the strategy is sensible. But, I think some of the tactics I see in it's pursuit as flawed. Overall, I think the tactical approach you are taking is a greater tool for actually doing something like that than lot of the tactics I see being used for a revival strategy.(but not all) When I see modern revival meetings. Generally, they effectively are a really long praise and worship service. Often missing some of the things I thought of as valuable in historical accounts of revivals. A revival of practice, obedience, and traditions that have value is something I would like to see. I like both Keller and Piper. One of the classic ones I likes was an older Presbyterian revival preacher who also dived into a lot of study into the history or revival. that being Richard Owen Roberts. When it comes to reaching Gen Z, bringing back strong traditions is important to the appeal. there is a lot of interest in things such as spiritual disciplines. In some ways it makes more sense in a Methodist context ironically, since many of them believe people can lose their salvation. And so keeping a method of obedience is needed to cultivate and maintain faith. And so in that context, revival could be caused by saying people aren't obedience to scripture. (Usually when it comes to evangelism, or accepting certain sins as normal) and so repentance and change is needed to bring this obedience. The more reformed branch often seems to have a note of "there are a bunch of unsaved people in the church. And if you reach a bunch of them at once you can save the dead or dying churches." I do agree with the idea that revival has a somewhat Anabaptist connection. I think that is more prevalent with actual baptist to a degree. Overall, they are very anti-establishment and anti-tradition. Although, they do have many elements of tradition they still hold that don't have much basis in scripture they love to criticize other denominations for their adherence to tradition. Now for theologically conservative churches in general most of the criticism I see from progressive Christians are off. But, a lot of them do apply to many baptist churches. there are quite a few who are extremely tied to the political right and patriotism to the extent that sometimes seem to put country above god. I have attended services at baptist churches where not a single hymn or christian song was sung. But rather entirely patriotic songs. And the Christians who essentially viewed Trump as a divinely appointed agent that all Christians should give loyalty to. I don't think your characterization is completely right though for actual Anabaptists though. I personally consider myself to be an Anabaptist. Although, I didn't grow up in their community but rather developed largely Anabaptist beliefs in college. With my main exposure before that time being a couple friends of my father that were Mennonite. I grew up in a mix of denominations, Since my father was a first generation christian. So, as he grew in his faith and knowledge he ended up moving through several denominations. Although, the largest portion of that was at a reformed Presbyterian church as a younger child. My father was actually saved at a church of Christ Church, but he realized after a bit of studying the bible while there that main of their beliefs were very biblical. He eventually settled on being a reformed baptist who holds to the 5 main points of Calvinism but not the rest of Calvin's teachings. So, I spent my teenage years in that environment. As an aside I think you are a little too critical of the Church of Christ. Although there are plenty of reasons to be suspicious. Since they tend to be a bit to prone to weirdos showing up and then convincing a bunch of members of the church to splinter off and make a cult. And they have several traditions that contradict scripture in somewhat minor ways. I think that is due to them being a bit too individualist. Although, they do have some good arguments that miss a bit of context. A lot of the most devout, theologically conservative, and determined Christians I have as friends came out of a church of Christ background. Although, often a further study of the word causes to realize many of that churches traditions actively contradict scripture. Most notably the prohibition of the use of instruments of all forms when there are psalms that literally encourage the use of instruments within them. Although, there is a certain beauty to acappella music. Particularly when it comes to harmony and such. Even if you hold to a strict view of the regulative principle of worship then entirely forbidding them at all times doesn't mesh with scripture. Overall, the Anabaptists are more focused on tradition than baptist, but it is largely different traditions. Notably they take the sacraments more seriously generally and often in different forms, Particularly communion. And take the sermon on the mount literally. Which is something most Baptist preachers don't do even if they claim that biblical inerrant means every passage outside of obvious poetry like psalms should be interpreted literally. Which then often is used by those who claim that makes any form of old earth or even old universe creationism heresy. Something that completely alienates many people who are interested in God, but see Christianity as something in opposition to science. Most Anabaptist institutions are smaller scale and more rurally focused. I view choice as an integral part of salvation. But, I don't think people can lose their salvation. I think the second of those is more important. Although, I do think there is enough ambiguity that I might be somewhat wrong about the first part. Since it is pretty clear that some form of predestination exists in the bible. But, there are multiple possibilities as to what that could mean. I also hold to many of Anabaptism's historic secondary positions such as pacifism, and a greater expectation for mutual aid between believers in a church. although, not the degree of full-on Mennonites. Overall, some of the biggest perversions of the revival strategy are seen in the charismatic and pentacostal churches. Since they take it further, starting with the idea that the church is broken and tradition is actively bad. And that it needs to be fixed. So, there is a particular set of standards a charismatic leader has that needs to implemented to get back to how it was in the early church. With the means of change being, a sweeping movement of spirituality will bring people back to the way things were before all the big churches went astray. That argument can easily be used to justify heresies such as Gnosticism and forms of non-trinitariansm. And the whole organizing worship services to manufacture emotion and increase the chances of revival using worldly means comes from there. In the best case this means taking some of the softer tactics of cults and using it in a church that is disconnected from real tradition. In the worst case it leads to establishment of entirely new cults. In contrast with an approach of tearing things down, I think an area of a focus needs to be building up new institutions. In addition to preservation. As well as proactively seeking to re-implement historical traditions that have been lost but are scripturally supported. Overall, I really like the approach you are taking and I think now is a good timing for it. I do think there are other strategies that can be employed synegistically with it though. But different people have different callings.

You are a Protestant. I am a Protestant as well= mild-Pentecostal-Evangelical-Baptist (I know, is a mouthful) - As for East European Orthodoxy (Romanian) there are some high tier Orthodox Priest (Theology Professors ) that are ... Invited to Preach in Pentecostal, Adventist, Baptist, Evangelical (etc) Protestant Churches ! Not sure if this is a "revival" per se and is practiced by young and old generations. With more and more fresh Orthodox priests being more Evangelical that the Evangelical themselves . But then again, that part of Christianity was under the yoke of communist dementia for so long that the massively atheist people are now packing the Church, any Church, in full ... Thus indeed, revival or not, God is working in mysterious ways !
