I live in Hungary and I feel ashamed how Russians and their culture is being treated in the "West". The people and their culture have nothing to do with current events. If someone wants to be angry at someone, be angry at politicians (on both sides by the way) for this having happened.

I came back this week from a 2 weeks holidays in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. My last night of my holidays i got smashed in a pub in Saint Petersburg “ The London Pub “ Russia is awesome , very pretty, so safe that you would not believe it , Moscow is by far more advanced than London or Paris , it is a huge city with 20m people living there but has an amazing transport system. So menu places to visit in the city , everything is of high standards. Good restaurants, coffee shops, bars , etc , and it is so so affordable not say cheap. Life in Russia has improved so much and it continues improving . Very very worthy a visit to enjoy those amazing cities , full of history and culture. Luxury in the centre of Moscow is part of the Russian culture, with beautiful and well dressed Slavic women
What you have listed about Moscow and St. Petersburg can be said about many Russian cities. Our Kazan is no worse than in Moscow - it is also clean, well-groomed, rich and safe)

I love living in Russia. I've never come across any issues with the authorities/police. I feel so "free" in Russia. I left the UK (with my Russian wife) because every single letter we received through the mail was either from the council or a utility company demanding money or informing us of price hikes (with an insincere "...we understand this can be difficult for some families, if you would like to speak to someone, call..."). Now we're debt free, our 6 year old is no longer being "indoctrinated" (I think everyone knows what I mean by this, can't type is explicitly on RU-vid), and we're genuinely enjoying life. Oh - and I love getting around Moscow on those electric scooters!!

The answer is simple. Compliance with the laws in Russia makes the likelihood of problems with the authorities vanishingly small. The authorities are not at all inclined to arbitrariness, and the police are friendly.
In 2005 I was in my foreign car on holiday in Moscow and a lorry when into the back of me (his bad brakes) on leningradski prospect. I had to get the decision about fault from the police, get an insurance claim accepted and car inspected by the insurance company, and get the car repaired within 6 days before my visa ran out. I had go go to a notarius to give a doverenost to my wife's friend to collect my £1k because the claim was going to take at least 2 months to process. And the point is that the police were very very helpful. They even forced the other party to turn up at the police station on threat of arrest. I had to use a backstreet garage to source 2nd hand spare parts, repair and paint the car within 5 days. I made it out to Finland with 2 hours left on my visa.

I was unaware that China was a city! Joking aside, China is definitely crazy for the number of cameras which can been seen literally everywhere. In fact it's hard to find a blind spot between cameras even if quite rural areas.

Friends did a 14,000KM figure 8 around Russia (Moscow-Gorniy Altaisk-Sochi-Moscow-PG), 12,000 of those by car. Other than taking three days to get used to the crazy driving outside of Moscow the trip was great. Four police stops, all friendly. They actually felt sad leaving back for the West.

Jonny, Great video! I visited friends several times Prague (in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic) in the 1970s & 1980s. The only problem I had was making an illegal left turn and paying a $10 fine! Like you I assiduously obeyed Czech laws. Once I accidently left my wallet on top of my rental car. When I returned 3 hours later it was still there! During my last year of university studied Czech. That was my biggest problem! BTW I was very happy to see President Putin restore the royal family who had been killed in 1917.
Been 7 months in Kazan feel so much safer and people are way more generous and hospitable the back home. Never felt threatened once not even close. More tyranny from my government at home.

I'm a brit but with Russian family. Still currently based in the UK..that may change. I'm always apologising to friends on Vkontanke for my governments actions and without exception they always tell me to stop apologising, and that they don't hold me responsible. Been to RU (I think) 13 times since 2003 and never had a single issue. Just live within their laws and you'll be fine in my experience. Don't like the laws? then maybe Russia isn't for you. Better not to use phones at all, like me. I have regular phone, but use it extremely rare. Even travel abroad mainly without phone (for internet access I use iPad). It is crazy how people walk with smartphones on streets, while inside is bank apps and sim connected exactly to that banks, so any smartphone provide full access to bank accounts. I still can’t believe why not arrived gangs which stole phones, open bank apps and stole all money. Just few minutes and you can steal hundreds of thousands from random person.

I agree and disagree ... importing unskilled labor is often dicey. We just haven't imported large numbers of unskilled labor from developed countries in a long time, only established people. But historically we did, and it was a problem at one time. The problems were never on the same level as importing unskilled labor with totally foreign values, but there were problems.
It depends on how you treat the migrants, and if you hold them to the same standards as everybody else. The west makes two gigantic mistakes. The first being it is slow to actually immigrate migrants and the second is it has all these strange exceptions to the law and accepted standards of behavior from them so they are not only feeling no part of the society they live in, but they’re also allowed to get away with bad behavior. In Russia, it’s probably possible to come in and integrate into the country relatively fairly quickly, but it comes with the catch of needing to actually assimilate in terms of language and culture, as well as follow the laws.

I spent now 150 hrs with an app called Mondly, i am on the level of 2400 words in Russian in 4 months. I can uderstan simple conversation can pronounce well, but have to little practice. To be on s B2 level, it is estimated to study 1100 hours. Still i have only 150 hrs in 4 months

I worked in Russia as a student as an interpreter in a consulting English company, which, in those years, as part of the European Union, had a large operation, to work with the Russian authorities. The British are amazing people, lived in Britain for several years, still upsetting the current Russophobia of the English cabinet, I did not see it in ordinary Englishmen. But, the sense of privilege of people from English foundations and the English government was astounding. Stealing the flag of Russia, from the flagpole, on the day of Russia's national holiday, in front of an armed police patrol, thinking, we have fun, we drank, we are English, we can get away with it. And got away with it, by the way, I had to convince these policemen, inexpensively, that they are “stupid foreigners English, but good people”, and they were merciful. But the English, on a domestic level, have always been respected. Starting with my grandfathers WWII vets, respected, Churchill, the English are smart, cultured, but the Americans are brazen fools. Until 2022, of course, now England is on the Russians' hate list for years to come. But, to ordinary people from England, who respect the laws of Russia, polite, behaves adequately, does not steal flags on May 9 and does not try to molest Russian schoolgirls, there are no problems, just respect the law, and be polite. And the English know how to do that.

The difference is that in many Western countries, the police, security authorities, etc. are soft on crime often using two-tier policing when it comes to certain demographic groups and "migrants." As has been seen in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, the US, etc. these "migrants" are people being foisted on said countries illegally, but, in many cases, they are treated better than the citizens of the host country. From what I have learned about Russia, the authorities do not let hordes of theses people into the country. There is no death penalty in Russia as Russian prisons are a living hell for the criminals who end up there. Most prisons in the West are resorts in comparison. Many Westerners who are moving to Russia now are doing so for various reasons including getting tired of living in countries where it has become unsafe due to the continual influx of these "migrants" and two-tier policing with regard to crime.

Actually it is Russians who was hold in US prisons tall scary stories how is awful and dangerous in your system (a lot of examples of behavior actually consider as crimes against humanity, e.g when you don’t allow for people to sleep - classic). Camps in Russian are different, in most soft case it is just former village where sleep during night and work as regular citizen in nearest city during day - de facto it is exile. Majority camps have almost zero difference with typical military base: exist barracks where everyone sleeps, exist kitchen, exist workplace, sometimes exist farms. So life it not much different from life in army. What you described (kind of resorts) really exist, but only in few EU countries (in most cases all the same or more worst than in US). 3. For any violation of law Russia cancel citizenship for migrant and expel from country (with prohibition to return for 20-50 years).

Так многие у нас выступают за ужесточение наказаний. Уверен, что есть и обратные примеры, где в России дадут больший срок, но чаще наоборот (такие убеждения). Интересно было бы сравнить). You don't seem to realise it depends where the migrants are from. Maybe the Tajiks are more integrated, but black people and Pakistanis in London are entirely unintegrated, and are much more violent than the ethnic groups your migrants are from in Moscow.
The problem with migration isnt the migration itself but if you have unfiltered "migration" aka asylum seekers who nobody has a clue who they are, whats their past, etc. I would asume russia has still borders which are guarded and you cant enter without ducuments, etc.

I feel safe when I walk and drive my car on the streets of Khabarovsk. This past Summer, I traveled to Canada and had no problems with exiting and entering Russia. In my opinion, crimes are treated much more humanely in Russia. In Europe, the punishment for a minor crime is much harsher than in Russia. In Russia, you are not fined for parking on the lawn (this is bad), there are no fines for damage to city property (also bad). There is more freedom in Russia than in Europe, that's for sure.

Your point is universal: I often meet people who constantly have problem with police, they often get ransacked, and also carry illegal items like knives etc. I also sometimes carry a pocket knife, but I have never been ransacked or had a problem. The reason is that I simply dont fo unesessary things, dont go to unimoortant places. Im working and buzy with that. I really dont encounter problems. Wereas people who always stay where problems are in plenty… when you tend to your work or basic needs, those places are generally not troublezones, and are the places grown up and responsible people spend their time. In homes, work, with children or at school.
I am surprised that a foreigner is so afraid of police in Russia, per capita there are fewer than in western countries because their is such a small fraction of crime compared to the US and UK. NO EU, UK or US country is as safe as Russia. There are more police in city center Moscow because all capital cities do because they are the most likely targets. Surely you remember in 2017 Russia closed 73 prisons due to lack of prisoners. In the 1990s they needed more but since 2000 the crime rate dropped every year. When I visit the UK or back home in the US I have every reason to be fearful of crime AND police but neither in Russia. I have lived in city center and several districts in St Petersburg 24 years and never had or seen crimes. Moscow however is not like Russia so there are a lot more people unhappy with any government or leader. But in real Russia the government and president are very popular. It is also more democratic with higher voter turn out and 40 main parties and the lowest barrier for citizens to run of any of the 92 countries I have been in. Have you been to England lately? Crime is everywhere, aggressive police is the norm. Most police people see here are traffic police and do not even have jurisdiction on the sidewalks. Lots of government jobs have uniforms that look like police when they are transportation workers workers or many other services so some visitors think there are a lot of police. I was a partner in an incoming tour operator business that provide shore excursions for cruise ship passengers every summer. Tourist in groups are targets everywhere in the world. But hosting 150,000 visitor a summer from 2002 to 2020 we only had 4 reported crimes, one turned out there camera the guest "had" had been been stolen was simply found in their ship cabin. Another one had their phone stolen but when I went to the restaurant where it was last seen, it was sitting in the office because someone turned it in after finding it in in the women's restroom. Is there a large city anywhere in EU, UK or US where your gf/wife would have no reason to fear walking though any party of the city, alone.....at 3am. It would be insane in these western countries but here in Russia it is safe. There are 600 parks in this city and walking through any of them is safe day or night and no police around. Even the number of law area tiny fraction of those in the US or UK, you have a lot more personal freedom in Russia.

There are many police only during football matches or large city events, children's and city holidays. Otherwise, the police are almost not visible on the street. I understand there is a proposed new immigration to Russia policy in the pipeline. One has to learn a basic history & learn the language after 3 years to become a citizen. Sounds excellent compared to here in the U.K. with murderers & criminals invading our once magnificent country. So many disillusioned hard working Westerners leaving countries like the U.K. myself included considering Russia.
