I like watching the Great Pottery Throwdown because one of the judges just cries over the beauty of each piece regardless of story. I think every wholesome competition show would benefit from someone just obsessed with the beauty of the art.
My first thought was that this show has the same energy as the Great Pottery Throwdown. Everyone's so enthusiastic about their art and so supportive of each other. And the love that one judge has for pottery is so cute.
Yes!! I was going too recommend it too, it’s a comfort show and just delightful. I just saw they’re doing a Canadian version starting in February and I’m hoping it’ll be similar. Canada kept the vibe when bake-off came over so I’m hoping pottery stays warm and comforting too☺️
As a danish person - first I have to say: Your danish accent is the cutest ☺😊 I looooved this show! It was actually not even on national television but on a regional one. The contestants got hotel and travel-costs, and a medal and the honor. No money involved. I cannot believe that it never got picked up anywhere! Good job you for yelling that this has to come again. Many kind knitting regards from Hanne in Denmark
Yes, I feel like an added charm to the show was the fact that almost all of the contestants were from this same region and many had great regional dialects too. It's like if an entire Project Runway had nothing but US Southern dialects, haha.
I agree. I only saw it when visiting a relatives summer house in the region. Would have loved access to it nationwide (Copenhagen based here) kind regards Mette from Denmark
As a Dane too I would have loved too see it but it's wasn't on a channel I could get. But I have seen some of the episode so at some point it was showing some where else, maybe on TV2 Fri But today searching for the show here on RU-vid it's seems I can watch it here....and with English subtitles too if desired 😊
I think it might've worked well as more of a hybrid. Like speed challenges and then they go home and finish a full garment at home, come back, new challenge etc. You could get some super impressive projects like even bridal dresses or super intricate lace work.
the universe is telling you to make your own crochet reality show for youtube. it can be in danish if you want but english might be easier for everyone. i'll even be your first contestant
it’d be so cool but to do this on zoom so you could have many contestants, mr beast style, and then have like weekly meetings to dwindle down the contestants! i’d totally watch it and even join if i was able to!
There’s a Norwegian series called SlowTV that includes three episodes of people knitting in real time for like 10 hours at a time, for anyone interested.
I was going to suggest that, so happy someone else thought of it too! I still remember the ladies having an overtired laughing fit over their knitting late at night. 😂
I do love competition shows but also hate when people are sent home prematurely. I think that’s why I love school of chocolate. It’s still a competition but since it’s a school, everyone stays on to continue to grow and learn. It lead to someone who would have gone home episode one flourishing and become a far better chocolatier than she would have leaving early
I hate that they exploit people’s trauma on all of these shows, but this was much more wholesome than many other shows. It felt like the art was a really beautiful outlet for all the participants to express themselves and that the judges and producers actually showed sincere compassion 🩷
100%! I was worried when I first heard them say the challenge but it was not like that at all. It was really lovely to see such vulnerable moments in a show like this.
One reason why Bake Off was so good was because they didn't exploit people's trauma - when they tried to force it by putting a camera in the contestants' faces and saying "tell us about your dead gran's recipe" the two original presenters Mel and Sue would shut it down, and anytime someone was crying they would stand next to them and start swearing so they couldn't use the footage. You really need to hold onto that wholesomeness despite what the greedy producers might want. Some versions just haven't got that.
Sadly, being forced to trauma dump on television in a competition setting is a great way to retraumatize someone. I thought the Danes were better than this; this level of exploitation and disregard for mental health is something I'd expect from an American tv show. Hopefully they have free therapy in Denmark and everyone was able to actually work through their traumas in a helpful way. I had a very traumatic and abusive childhood and thankfully despite being American I've been able to work through some of that in therapy. If I was on this show and got this prompt I'd just walk out and quit the show. My trauma is not beautiful, my trauma is not your entertainment, my trauma is not your profit.
@@pinkdarkmanI’m not saying this to be rude just genuinely curious but why didn’t you think you would be able to get proper help in America? I mean I some ways I definitely get it being American myself but overall I would say the services provided here aren’t that bad compared to some other places.
I dont understand why yall are mad, I dont know if there is a flaw in the translation, but no one is being forced. The woman know what they walk into, they knew before hand. one of them said: I dont know what story im going to tell, I have watched others and cryed at the telivision from their stories, so I cant just talk about.a bad hair day, its my turn to give back. The first person desided she didnt want to tell a traumatic story so she said: My story is not tough but hard, I wanted to make a peace to repressent being busy with work kids and burning out. (I shortened it) These are art peaces, so they need to have feelings behind them, what you guys cant see, cause not available in enlish, but this is not the first episode not even the first season and these woman knows eachother well and have become friends. No one is forced to do anything but these are not weird question in denmark, we have a pretty honest society and people are in general open about hardship. We dont have a culture where people take themselves to seriusly and we are in general not affraid of other peoples opinion and not afraid to be laughed at (this ofcause is up to the individual, but we rank as top three countries wich people are not afraid to be laughed at, maybe number one but im not sure still) I know if you come from a place culture where it is important to have a facad on to be acceptable, this might seem strange and maybe even very pushy and intimate. But here it is not as people here dont talk to strangers, instead we have friends for many many years and this make a very closed yet honest and open society. its hard to explain… its not weird okay.. 😂😂 trust me😂😂 This could be a first schoolday get to know you question, thats how little weird it is 😂😂 its hard to translate a cultural thing.. And they knew beforehand + they are okay with it and have the choice to interprete it how they will. sey for any spelling mistakes, not my first language
Let's pitch!!!! 5 episode "seasons" where a small group do Fiber challenges *no eliminations!! Howeverrrr- at the end all the project are displayed like mini pop-ups and every crafter goes around and they vote for eachother. And that's who the winner is! This was fun to think up.
Right?!?! I think we already know who the host with the most *knitted ware* hehe but yeah, or even just invite 3 people do the challenges and such. Then another 3 people. Oh oh. Maybe one challeng should be assistant nightmare!!! Give them a hard project and give them a helper- who has never done any fiber arts!!!
I feel like instead of eliminating people, they could do a point system and whoever gets the most points at the end wins the prize. So then we get to see everyone do every challenge and there's still competition
I’d love to see this in a more project runway type layout. Maybe they get a few days, we get to see their sketches and math for stitch counts, and they talk about their yarn choices for texture/qualities. Plus with more time they can have more complex projects
OMG! I was recruited to help with costumes for a high school production of Oklahoma! when the theatre teacher said “go to Goodwill and find something for your character to wear.” My friend’s daughter was Gertie and I made her two costumes (in 3 days). She stood out and I was recruited as the costume designer for that school for the next three years
There was a show on Netflix years ago called Yarn. It was 18 hours of teams knitting competition somewhere in Scandinavia, I don’t really recall anymore. it was a sheep to. sweater contest. They would bring in the shepherd to shear the sheep, then someone would spin the yarn, and then the women mostly would knit the sweater, which was Pretty ugly but it fulfilled the purpose of the contest. They went nonstop without sleeping and were fed hotdogs and such. It was actually pretty hysterical.
As someone who lived in Denmark they don’t tend to like being open about this stuff to strangers NEVER happens. People don’t say ‘hey how are you’ when you meet up because they won’t ask unless they really want to know and they know asking in public isn’t okay. So it’s wild that this happened in this show
As someone who is Danish it's not necessarily that we don't want to know, it's that we don't want to put people in a situation where they feel like they have to lie just to please. More often than not we'll assume you're only gonna bring it up if YOU want to talk about it. Being put on the spot doesn't really feel nice, y'know?
@@Illuminaturee that’s what I meant if I didn’t come across right I am sorry. I really loved that about Danish culture tbh. As someone who grew up in Australia it was a bit of a shock but mainly it was super refreshing. Danish people generally I found were very what you see is what you get and I prefer than to false niceties
My dad filmed this show, and he had so much fun during the production. I can’t believe that I randomly stumbled upon this RU-vid video. I’ll make sure to show it to him😊 Edit: I remember my dad telling me about this one episode, where they had to knit a ‘’p3nis warmer’’… And he thought that was a very fun experience.
I dont know why i love watching knitting or crochet videos even though i am a quilter. I love seeing people being creative in a time crunch. Wish the whole program with english subtitles
As a Dane, this is so hilarious for me to watch😂 I watched this show with my grandma (whose name is Annette as well hahah) and we loved it!! There was one moment where one of them pronounced a sentence in an accent from their area which is very differently from our accent, so it sounded kinda funny, but to this day whenever we have to say that sentence we still say it the same way as the contestant😂😂 It makes me happy that you watched this bc this show was in its own legendary league
That would be a cool concept to have the same contestants for the entire show and at the end they decide who win. You could even have a few categories like "Most improved" "Viewers Choice" (have a way for the audience to vote on their favourite piece every week and keep track who gets the most votes) Sometimes I am left shouting at creative type shows when you know someone only went home because that weeks challenge wasn't their thing, not because they are not great at what they do. I am in Australia, and I would watch that, but it would probably need to be on a streaming service like Prime or Netflix but only because I am barely aware of commercial TV anymore, I don't even have an aerial for my TV to watch free to air.
They have an episode where they knit Christmas ball ornaments made popular by Arne and Carlos. I love watching this show. Just like you, I was trying to find it with English subtitles, but no luck. I love that you are highlighting it. I am following the Dutch channel on RU-vid in the hopes that they resuscitate the show. Here's hoping!
Danish is not the same as Dutch, just fyi :) it’s a common mistake for some reason, but Dutch is spoken in the Netherlands and danish is spoken in Denmark
i highly recommend the show “making it”! it’s a craft competition show hosted by amy poehler and nick offerman. it’s so heartfelt and the contestants are all genuinely sweet, likable people - and they’re insanely talented too!! seeing you talk about this show reminded me of it :)
I will translate every bit for you! It's so much better when you know what the contestants are saying! Also: well done with the Danish, not too bad at all! 🥰
I'm an American but have been living in Denmark, and the note you made about the show not feeling overly produced is something I would say applies to all of the Danish reality+competition shows. They usually just have a concept and then film it. There isn't much over editing or weird set ups like there often is in American reality+competition shows. I find it very helpful to learn Danish and Danish culture by watching these types of shows :)
In Portugal, we used to have a show called "Cosido à Mão" (hand sewed, translating) and it was quite fun, a little Master Chef style! The contestants were all amateurs and the show was about fashion, sewing and design. It was full of challenges and surprise guests. I loved it!
I’ve been cosplaying for 13 years and I would DIE if you covered cosplay community drama. There is a plethora of drama and it’s so entertaining. Also covering Heroes of Cosplay would be such a serve ❤
I remember being so disappointed by Heroes of Cosplay Like I wasn’t really expecting that and I thought it was going to be more like a Drag Race type show
Maaaan, Emma. You nailed it; I didn’t know I needed this in my life! I would become SO OBSESSED. 1000. Definitely. A crochet version?! Shut upppppp. How about that pink paint? 🫶🏻☺️🧶
actually did a double take when i heard an indian last name- i was NOT expecting it in a video about a northern european show but im pleasantly surprised! that’s awesome, and im glad he’s successful!
I would love to have knitting/crochet challenges like this, except maybe with a good week to a month to complete those in my spare time. It would be so cool to see everyone’s designs!
I'm from the nordics so I feel like I can say this, but a knitting show where the first assignment is about trauma and darkness somehow feels like the most Scandinavian thing ever lol
I have watched all of these for the seasons (I thought there were 4?). I even was in an Arne and Carlos group and one lady knew Danish and would answer all my questions. " Why are they all laughing? What is the challenge? Where is Jutland?" etc. I even emailed the TV channel and asked them to have more episodes with English subtitles. I LOVE IT!!!!
They even had an episode where they knit a tie for someone special. One lady knitted a tie for her husband who was born female but now a male. When one lady even knits a penis and testicles fo r a challenge
I loved the capelet t-shirt one -- that was my favorite. But I agree with you that instead of having a competition where people get thrown off the island, just have challenges and see how the different people create to meet the challenges. If it has to be a competition, rate all the knitters in each of the challenges and have a winner on points at the end. I would also like at least one longer project.
I stumbled across this on RU-vid a couple of years back. I was heartbroken that more did not have English subtitles. I loved it so much. So glad I am not the only one.
there's this Spanish TV show called Maestros de La Costura (Masters of Sewing) and it's pretty much a Masterchef/British Bake-Off reality about sewing!!! it's not exactly about knitting (rather about sewing, and designing), but they bring in famous designers and have tons of challenges - it's modelled after these other shows. It's also very well produced, and the main national public tv network does it so there should probably be english subtitles available in the official player!!
About 10 years ago Skacel hosted The Fiber Factor. It was a knitting competition show on RU-vid with maybe 8-10 designers. They were given challenges with specific materials or tools and then judging based on what they made. No one was eliminated until closer to the finals and the finale was at Vogue Knitting Live NYC. It's all still on RU-vid at youtube.com/@TheFiberFactor?si=gyRkhz5UL-8rrJ9_
If you think you’d like this and you like the great British bake off then I highly recommend The Great British Sewing Bee and The Great Pottery Throw Down. Similar vibes, similar awesome craft skills being shown off, just really warm and comforting to watch.
oooh it would be so cool to have a project runway-style challenge where they have a budget or time limit to get materials and then reveal the challenge, or like an rpdr/ink master-style challenge where they bring people w unique circumstances and then make them items to empower them
Love this. Check out The Great Pottery Throw Down (British)! The stakes are raised with materials that can shatter, crack, and disappoint in the firing,
Emma, thank you!! 🎉 thank you for the link to the episodes; I left your video to enjoy season 1 episode 4. I don't speak Danish but I speak craft and inspiration. (And I follow enough knit and crochet vloggers to know the lingo, and Great Pottery Throw down, Great British Sewing Bee, Great British Bake off, Blown Away, Landscape Artist of the Year and Portrait Artist of the Year... 😅 to name a few, all follow the same pattern 😊) the up-cycling was good; making a tangible piece linked to a (traumatic) moment was beautiful and an inspiration. ❤ Thank you Emma for bringing this gem to our attention! 😇
what, i'm danish and i didn't even know we had this! thanks, now i know what i'm going to be binge watching today! also, good job on the danish :) your pronounciation was surprisingly good, no joke! :) and btw, if you want to see more danish knitting tv, i suggest the tv show with lærke bagger, where she travels around the nordics and knits something in each region.
Funny timing... I`m from Denmark. Under covid I had design and our theacher just us to watch this, one episode a week, but lucky me, tell a knitter to watch a knit show... I saw all the seasons in 2 days. Funny that I just had a dream of this like 3 days ago, and wanted to rewatch, this video just brings back the 2020 vibes for me
Aww you have a soft heart, that's awesome. My youngest daughter and I cry at everything, even some commercials. My daughter hates watching competitions of any kind as she ALWAYS feels bad for those that are eliminated or lose. She watched the superbowl then cried for SF. Love the videos and ALL the work and research you do for these. Cheers!!
As a royal watcher, I'm at peak Denmark right now because the Queen is abdication on January 14. This isn't helping. Queen Margrethe is an artist when not Queening and has worked in fabric crafts so its all coming together.
Daisy is an all around artist! She did the illustrations for Tolkiens books. Under a penname obviously. Note: Her Royal highness, queen Margrethe II of Denmark is lovingly referred to as Daisy, because of her love of George Jørgensen's daisy jewelry
In the Netherlands they also have this painting one where they're trying to find the next Rembrandt. I think they do that one on Norwegian TV too, but without the Rembrandt. In Norway we also had The Great Sow Off (so for sowing) - and MY MOM WAS ON IT :D
Hi Emma, Just wanted to make you aware that in the Netherlands, one of the biggest yarn webshops also has a knitting/crocheting competition called BreiSTER / HaakSTER (Which is a pun on breister/haakster meaning person who knits/crochets, and 'ster' means 'star'.) I didn't check it out so I don't know if it's any good or if there are any subtitles available, but it's on RU-vid so you can at least use the auto subtitle/translate.
We (as in Denmark) had another show similar. It was about finding Denmark's next big designer. I only watched the first season, but it was quite fun to watch. They were trying out each other's fields of crafting, like woodworking, I think jewelry making was in there too (it's been a while and my memory was never been particularly good 😁), but they were about 5 or more contestants, i think with each their own special field of talent and knowledge. I just don't know if it's available to watch, or with subtitles for the rest of the world!
Best way in my opinion would be a best of so many challenges, so they all get to do all the challenges, but the person who wins the most or scores the highest overall wins.
I love this show. However, when watching this a few years ago, the subtitled episodes soon ran out. One Danish knitting and culture show you will love ìs "Arne and Carlos" It's in English...and I love those guys.
I'm so happy to find out that a show like this exists... Even if it never leaves Denmark. They just need to sell it to a streaming service as is with the subtitles.
With your interest in other shows, I couldn't help but think of another Danish knit tv series you might like! Called " Feldthaus & Bagger taber masken" (/.../ & /.../ drops the stitch) from 2022. It features Christine Feldthause a lifestyle expert and hobby knitter and Lærker Bagger who is a prominent knitwear designer. There are 4 episodes of 30 ish min. They go to four different Nordic countries, where they et a knitting challenge for themselves. You get to follow their creative process while they explore knitting / yarn-related people and stores. On first look It doesn't seem to have English subtitles, but maybe a language learning plug-in (like Language Reactor) could provide them. Loved the video!
Omg, thanks for sharing! I've just binge watched the whole show (well.. season 1). The perks of being home with the flu hehe. Am Swedish, so I understood like 50% of what they said at the beginning, last episode I was fluent haha (and as already mentioned here, they didn't win any grand prize. Only the honor and a nice bouqet of flowers. But such a wholesome show, loved it. season 2 seems even better, improved production)
This is so cool! I might have to try and find the show to watch it. I myself am a crocheter, so I would love to see a crochet version of a show like this
Hi, Danish person here, sooo on mysterious Vithard… it is really no surprise when you see how sweet he is in the show, but I can tell you that he was a wonderful pedagog as well while doing the show😊
The price is the honour if being the winner. I have not seen the show myself, but I found an article telling about the price. So the people joining must have a great joy in knitting and doing it, not for the money or any other price, than the joy of being in the show and the hope, that they can call themselves a winner.
I don't know if you want to stick strictly to fiber arts for show watching, but if you're open to a wider lens for arts/crafts, Full Bloom (floral arrangement competition; HBO/Max) and Blown Away (glassmaking competition; Netflix) were both quick watches and SO fun
This! I fully support you pitching your show idea. Four different well more designers and influencers in the knit off. Similar challenges. I would watch the shit out of that, too!!! 🙌🏻
Other competitve craft shows you might enjoy! Great british sewing bee, great pottery throwdown, britans best woodworker. These all have very similar vibes to gbbo and the judge/presenter interations are all really wholesome and relaxing. I would especially recommend the woodworking one, there was a judge change up after the first season and it really finds its footing, its presented by mel giedroyc who presented the early gbbo and is an absolute gem, shes so lovely. Ones with professionals that i like include: great british menu and bake off the professionals. Sorry for anyone who cant stand us brits lol i havent yet ventured outside of the bbc and channel four
I agree that knitters shouldn't be eliminated. The show could just keep a running tally of winners of each event, and the one who racks up the most points wins. That way, the viewers would get the benefit of seeing how ALL contestants design and execute each challenge.
Great Danish pronunciation! This reminds me of the British show Great Pottery Throw Down where the most butch judge always cries because the pottery is too beautiful ❤🥲
Bit late cause I only watched the video now but in the Netherlands we had Haakster en Breister (kind of double meaning, since it means female crochetter/female knitter but also crochet star / knitting star). It's a competition show for knitters / crochets run by a big yarn store. It's a youtube series but it was very wel done and un to wacht.
There was a fabulous competition years ago (no idea if it still happens) where a group of craftspeople, shearers, spinners, knitters, all get together and produce a sweater from sheep to finished item. The entire process is filmed and the team is competing with other teams from around the world. It was so entertaining but I’ve not seen another one.
