@dippindots1147 on the bright side atleast he's taking down some horrendous people in this comic like kingpin. Since he had contact with him, which means that kingpin also caught the virus. Too bad he couldn't get close to Charles Xavier🥲
The author: I intentionally made this comic to be so edgy that it's funny lol. The artists: *draws some of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of art that will be remembered for decades*
at the beginning of the video you were pondering how Ellis could’ve written this as a “comedy” when it’s so brutal and depressing, but it’s actually fairly simple. This book developed a following of people how are genuinely fascinated by its edge and grim but Ellis thought this book was stupid. Everything was so ridiculously depressing and dry of inspiration that he couldn’t help but laugh at how stupid it really was. Sheldon’s narration is meant to be taking itself too seriously and things like Cap being a cannibal or Johnny Blaze killing himself with a stunt were concepts he came up with in half a second trying to be overtly edgy. I think the reason why this vision didn’t really stick with people though is probably the art. Matching what is meant to be corny and overdramatized narration with the most gut-wrenching art you’ve ever seen doesn’t exactly scream “this book isn’t meant to be taken seriously”
Yeah, sometimes you end up with stories that kinda just make you wonder 😅 like, bro, what even is this Still, it's an interesting concept, if many Marvel heroes ended up in a rather unceremoniously ended life.
It was honestly a bit hard to get through the video just cause this guy is being so serious about everything when it's like so ridiculously edgy that it makes me laugh. It's like if a 15 year old got really mad and started scribbling all the worse things he could think of in his diary and then somebody read it being super serious.
@@pintolerance785I think you missed the point lol. The Author himself is the one who finds it edgy and silly. The wider Marvel community think the art turns it into a dark masterpiece. Most people indeed take this story very seriously. I simply don’t like body horror so I don’t really have a stake in this battle lol.
If this ever got adapted, it should be in the style of a documentary. The mix of VHS footage and low quality photos would enhance the experience and feel more believable.
While it’s a cool idea wasn’t the last ‘punchline’ of the comic that for all he saw it didn’t make a difference because he never got to write what he saw?
Great idea, but as we all know, Hollywood can't make documentaries. Look what happened to WWZ. It was a great book, but they completely broke everything that was unique and interesting and made it another horror movie. I liked it well enough, but was majorly disappointed by it at the same time.
Lines like that and lot of dialogue with reflective thought make me think the comic actually wants to be taken seriously but the writer is on damage control saying its just dark comedy to cover up for possible bad critics calling him way too edgy
I love the theory that Ben Grimm not going on the ship with the F4 is what caused this universe to go awry. Because of marvel’s sliding time scale for its continuity, the beginning of the universe is always the F4. Of course history happened before that, but Spider-Man was always bitten like 5 years after the F4 got their powers for an example. So if the basis for the marvel universe is comprised then so will the rest of the this world.
@@SidheKnight when there’s a single point in a timeline that is considered absolute like the creation of F4, events then start to form both before and after to make sure that event happens. So if Ben Grimm doesn’t get on the ship, history then needs to change so that he never gets on the ship.
@@dayalx I suppose it's worth it, as a conclusion to the DCEU. It's enjoyable, but not enough to watch it more than once. I was never a big fan of the DCEU, so I'm glad it's over. But the movie made me laugh and some good moments, and some nice cameos.
Brutal and intense. There is a death that stuck with me..Iron man's in which his suit malfunctioned, and he screamed for hours inside like a statue. As depressive the deaths are, they are comedically ironic. I think that's what makes this work so well as a twisted take on classically clean approachable look marvel garnered over the years.
ironically this isn't the first time Tony died this way. In Avengers vs Marvel Universe his armor malfunctions and he gets stuck and eventually becomes a statue in the middle of the city when the cannibals take over
I think your're confused, in ruins iron man dies when the ship is shot down, iron man dies the way your're describing in punisher kills the marvel universe
i think that despite everything, the fact that bruce still saved rick despite the ungodly consequences- is oddly heartwarming. in the darkest marvel universe, there's still people who do the same selfless thing they always do
What made this extra tragic was the fact that Phil was somehow aware that this was the worst case scenario for the Marvel universe. Seeing dark takes on iconic heroes is nothing new but they always came across as morbidly funny, like Old Man Logan or some other elseworld stories. But having the main character feel like they were just a few hairs away from a better world just makes it hurt and with the audience knowing that things are better in other stories immediatly makes you feel bad
Well, to be honest Ruins Hulk is more realistic than Canon Hulk. Especially with current retcons involving Marvel Satan, The end of time, and whatever the fuck Starship Hulk is supposed to be.
One thing i also find ironic about Parker here, is that he is mostly portraited as the "Friendly Neighbourhood" Spider-Man, always close to people and spreading happines, but here, he spreads sickness, and must stay away all the time from people.
The fact they snuck in the classic spidey hand pose makes me chuckle every time I see that panel. Stuff like that really makes the dark comedy of the comic stand out to me
It is so ironic that despite the author's intention to make the edgiest parody of Marvel possible, the brilliant artwork managed to turn that unbridled edge into something thought provoking and haunting; all the merits this story has are almost completely independent of its author. Man, this video will stay with me for a while. You couldn't have chosen a better song to match the visuals.
Tbh, Ellis also fails at writing a story that's twisted but funny. Ruins is a very depressing story, and one of my criticisms is that it's really just that - depressing, all edge and no point -, but it comes across as an earnest attempt at writing a tragedy. Edgy comedy isn't just a bunch of horrible deaths: you gotta lean into the absurdity in a way that makes me laugh out of shock, not just think "man that's fucked up".
I know this is old. But to me this is a mirror to our world. There was a soviet soldier named Stanislav Petrov, who stood between civilization and nuclear apocalypse. What if he chose wrong? That is ruins. What if everything went wrong? That is the world of ruins. We should be happy about the great and small miracles we encounter, because they could've ruined us.
There's a theory that wanda wasn't affected by this universe because she has probability manipulation. So it wouldn't make sense if something bad happened to her.
She was affected in the fact she turned into a treacherous coward and sold out her former team and own brother just to save her own skin. No one is completely spared in this reality.
@@jdog5150That's less something happening to her,and more her simply trying to cope with a timeline she would know is fucked. Sure she was cowardly, but if you knew you were basically in the worst timeline you'd do whatever you could to help yourself.
17:17 - the context is showing that as opposed to the Kree's own nuclear weapons going off, they were targeted by supposedly multiple human nations and immediately nuked by them.
@@datfrogjj Also I'm not sure the dead thor with the avengers was the real one, the soldier picked up his hammer, he was probably some strong mutant or hero using his name.
The Nick Fury section of the plot had me rolling laughing. He reminisces on cannibal acts with Captain America, shoots Jean Grey after being randomly solicited for s*x, and then shoots himself in the head in that exact order? And then the protagonist walks away and almost trips over the dead body of the Punisher just laid out in some street somewhere? Come on, that’s comedy gold
@@mothman6895 elaborate lol. Because if you think a story where Jean Grey, who reads minds, would let a guy walk up to her and shoot her to death is not in jest…I completely disagree with you
Found this guy literally an hour ago from the Arkham asylum video and am astonished that this guy has such quality videos and only have so few. Keep it up!
In a world of the worst things imaginable, the writers still manage to make peters fate the worst of them all, writers try not to make Peter's life a living hell challenge, failed again!
I don't know, Bruce Banner got a pretty shitty deal. Atleast Peter's suffering will end. Bruce is still alive in that condition under a lake in a bunker according to Rick.
Amazing video!👍👏 I just began my comic book collection and found Toon Haven. They have an incredible range of digital comics for every genre, including the hard to find ones. Lifetime updates too!😁
As someone who was struck with severe Pure OCD at 17, the theme of this comic resonates with me. I feel like my life was full of happiness, hope, light and joy until that day and it has been a cold, dark shell of itself for over a decade since then. I feel like it wasn't supposed to be like this. I remember when it wasn't like this. I'm only now starting to find some happiness in life despite it through sheer will.
@@anthonyfernandez82 OCD, especially the form I have which is called Pure OCD is a living nightmare because it can strike out of nowhere and make you terrified of things happening to you or people you love or even make you feel like you're the lowest form of life on Earth through extreme guilt and shame through mental images, thoughts, feelings, and urges which can last for years or even decades while your brain terrifies you into constantly trying to solve the imaginary problem it's giving you. I compare it to the scene from A Clockwork Orange where the main character is forced to watch images that torture him but instead of it coming from somewhere else it's your own brain doing it to you. I'm not exaggerating when I say I have barely survived it for this long and it has caused long term damage and PTSD for me.
Reading “Ruins” after you’ve just read “Marvels” is both bizarre and utterly depressing You know how things should be, how much potential this world actually had, and you get to join Sheldon and watch the world devour itself alive instead
Honestly Marvel Ruins feels more like a violent rejection of both heroes and villains, each of them meeting horrific fates for trying to change such a horrifiying world, a universe so wrong and bleak that the people in it can only dream of better tomorrows.
While it is dark and bitter, I really love the story of Marvel Ruins. I do wish there is more to the story to explore the aspect of what made the world go wrong. To either see if the world could be "saved" or if there is hope.
@@Gamfluent I wouldn't say it's earth rules applying. By all means the story is anything but realistic, just the worst-case scenario. Which may seem edgy on the surface. For that world, I won't say heroism is dead, instead hope is. Granted, on my part, I am reaching. So take that with a bucket of salt.
@@Sneeds_Feed_And_Seed69 Nah they do, it feels incomplete otherwise cause we don't know what actually made the universe this way and it's presented as a mystery at the start.
@@Gamfluent Nah a radioactive spider wouldn't give you a mutant virus, it wouldn't even do anything cause it lacks enough radiation to harm your DNA. Hulk would just die if he received a gamma blast.
What I like most about this is that theres no imminent threat to save the world from some super dark evil like in batman metal. Even though the world isn't literally in ruins it definitely convays that feeling and the fact that so few people realize how bad things truly are adds so much to it.
@@yankeehussar3614 who said so? Are you really sure about that? Remember we are talking about the most powerful telepath in the world, one that seems to be obssesed with power, what could stop him from enslave the whole world? Let me see... another very powerful telepath? A shame Jean Grey got a bullet in her head by a very unstable Nick Fury that start to rambling right after he kill himself about some mutant non-sense...
I can totally see the "dark comedy" elements in this. So many of this fates have a clear twisted irony to them. And the art makes it all the more visceral.
It's wild that as a Marvel guy I haven't heard of Ruins... but before you even said it I was like, "This is Warren Ellis, isn't it?" The guy has typecast HIMSELF, so predicatable.
The background music you use for this video is incredible. It adds a somber ambience to this dissection of Marvel’s most depressing comics. Marvel Ruins is proof of the old saying, “This is how the world ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper.”
Something that came to my mind when I was watching this is that Sheldon dies when his optimism and hope for this world dies; once he realizes the source of his awful disease, Peter Parker, he becomes immediately bitter and hateful, almost like this nightmare world finally claimed him in its corruption before mercifully killing him.
I think it's implied that maybe Phil's book is suppose to be like, the literal "Marvels" book. Like you said, he knows his world is fucked but maybe he's going to write something that could've been. Maybe the two stories arent opposites but they are connected in that way.
2:34 Honestly I can understand why he'd think this, I kinda stopped taking the story seriously when Jean Grey offers her body then Nick Fury shoots her, then himself immediately after. That scene was so absurdly edgy I found it kinda funny.
I can see Peni Parker, Miles, and Gwen being warned by Miguel or Noir that this universe is off limits and it's spiderman is doomed & infectious. He is never going to be asked to join the spidermen or he'll just end up starting the painful deaths of other spidermen form worlds with more hope than his own.
I imagine to the Spider Society, they can't even go to that universe without the risk witnessing the bleak horrors of a world where heroes and villains die, or worse the laws of that universe will slowly and painfully kill them.
@@tsuneomccormick115Facts. That and I can also see Miguel avoiding this universe himself in belief that the bad luck could transfer to other universes, which could doom the entire multiverse.
The marvel universe was always advertised as the real world with superheroes. They didn't just go on adventures, you got to see the unintended consequences of those adventures later on. Many of the greatest marvel stories involve discussions about whether gods in costumes exacting vigilante justice is a good idea or not. The X-men is built on the foundation of the people not wanting the heroes they have. Marvel ruins is the natural endpoint of this concept. Give everyone the real-world side effects of their superpowers and watch the chaos unfold. It's a horror comic first and foremost, but it's also a dark comedy about how fragile the universe is if something breaks the mold and pushes everything to its limit.
Super hero world sounds good on paper, but if was real, it would be horrifying, imagine living in the world where folks capable of destroying whole cities were just flying around fighting with other beings like them? For a normal person this would be horrible, i mean, at first folks would find this awesome, but given enough time, chaos will build up to the point people would be scared all the time, this is what happens with the X-men in a more localized scale, usually with muntant powers manifesting at young age, parents having to deal with sometimes horrible disfiguration, other times with destruction of property, then the government step in and do even MORE HARM than the mutants thenselves and voila, there is you racial motivator for hate. Saddly enough i never saw the X-men fully expand in this because they seem to be afraid to show the otherside of the story, the people that has to deal with the consequences of mutants powers going wrong.
@@johnfkennedyinanopentopcar8976I agree. The comic were a misery porn but if you think a little further or "reaching", it kinda make sense in hindsight. Mutation and radiation aren't gonna gave you superpowers, it at best gonna give you a minor disease or at worse you just die horribly. Even the author himself thought that this story were just a comedy because of how morbidly edgy it is, but the artists instead play it straight and make it completely serious.
i like a dark story, but to me ruins just feels cheap. its subversive, sure, but to what end? what does it actually say? it just feels to me like some edgy bullshit, like someone is going "euhhhh, actually, if those things in comics happened they wdnt get powers theyd just die" like it just has so much pointless hatred in it. like someone saw the darkness of a lot of 80s comics suddenly being offset by something upbeat like marvels and decided they had to undermine it. great video though, even if it isnt a story i personally enjoy you did a great job discussing it.
That's actually the point of the story. That's the readon why it's labeled as a comedy because the writer himself thought it was overly edgy garbage. It was never meant to be realistic, it was just supposed to be "everything goes wrong just because it can."
I imagine Deadpool in this universe. He just has regular cancer. He knows what the world is really supposed to be like but because he really doesn’t like being alive as much as he is he is ok with it. He would rather slowly get Cancer than instantly get Cancer and never die. He doesn’t care about everyone else because because it won’t be his problem anymore.
I remember hearing about Marvel Ruins years ago. The dark tone of this series reminds me of Twisted Metal: Black. It too was a dark and twisted take on the original games.
Personally im not the biggest fan of the story ive always leaned more towards hopeful uplifitng stories but this was just pure edge to me. I read this before the pandemic and it just shook me. The art is great and haunting even if i dont like the story a whole lot. My least favorite thing to come from all this is people saying how this is the realistic version of Marvel and that annoys me to no end. Not everything is hopeless and dark like Ruins its just the worst possible outcome for everything and not what would actually happen
Ruins is WAY too edgy to the point of being comedic like just terrible things happen for just no reason, Captain America became a cannibal... uh okay? What if Spider Man got cancer... uh okay? What if Silver Surfer exploded... uh okay? What if Galactis starved... uh okay? Like the ruin comic series doesn't give you anything to think about like, "Yeah I guess it would suck if superheroes just got cancer or randomly died." Anybody who says Ruins is the realistic version of Marvel is a clown.
@@pintolerance785 Spider-Man one makes some sense because it's a radioactive spider that bit him so in reality he'd become diseased, the Johnny Blaze one is pretty stupid though imo
The first art style was so gorgeous! thank god I didnt find these when I was younger cuz when I was a kid I didnt understand that there were "other universes", spiderman was just spiderman and seeing him like this would have disturbed me badly, when I was a kid I read an iron man comic that was an off shoot with a horrific ending and it messed me up cuz I didnt understand that it was separate from the normal Iron man lol
I would like to assume that the reason they gave Peter cracked skin was in reference to the other realities where he made a suit and got powers and the design is ment to replicate the webs on the suit
I think that's exactly what they were going for. He never got powers and he never became Spider-Man, but to parallel the hero he was supposed to be, his skin became red and had a web like rash, his pupils turned white and he was nearly bald, so it resembles his Spider-Man suit.
@@alexandercorbett1147But without context, you would think it was Deadpool without his costume since he kind of looks like how Wade looks like without his mask in the 616 comics.
I swore I read somewhere that the reason for the change in artists was deadline related. The Nielsens were taking too long with the art and so a change was made with someone who could get the job done in time. I so love RUINS. Great video on what I consider a modern day comic book classic.
Quicksilver got one the worst faith. Having both your legs and arms cut off, basically removing your super power and the ability to live normally, and still being held in a cage.
Just to think phil contracted that disease from peter earlier he hugged that girl who gave him flowers wouldn’t that little girl and her parents contract that disease as well🫢😰
You should do a Video on Kravens last hunt. Its without a doubt one of the darkest spiderman comics appearing during an age where that was the norm. And still the comic manages to be even darker than most
Another great video about a cruddy person with undeniable talent. Glad you mentioned this one! Since you talked about A Serious House on a Serious Earth, have you thought about giving Arkham Asylum: Living Hell a read? It the second one that inspired the Arkham games and also introduced us to Aaron Cash, but the highlight of the story is the utterly creepy Jane Doe, her and their version of Humpty Dumpty.
I've had this comic on my mind since I read it. It just isn't something you forget about. I don't know if I've ever read a more depressing and miserable story. Likewise, I find it difficult to see how Warren Ellis intended for this to be a comedy. On the surface you can understand that the powers these characters have is absurd, and then flip them on their head in parody to poke fun at how they would really be. However, this isn't a cute cartoon where Spider-Man is crawling around eating flies. It's so morbid and awful that I just can't find the humor in it. It's incredible how fascinating this story is. It just captivates the mind in a way that few comics can. Good video. Looking forward to the streams.
Apparently it's meant to be a parody because Ellis never intended it to be taken seriously. Half the bad things that happen in it were just the stupidest, edgiest things he could think of in about five minutes. Like, he thinks the _whole book_ is stupid. Cap's a cannibal. Johnny Blaze sets himself on fire and dies screaming, but also his bike keeps going for hours with his dead, burning corpse on it. Fury says he's interested in Phil's book and then immediately shoots himself. Thor is a real superhero with real powers who died in a missile attack and also a crazy person who thinks he can channel a god. It's aiming for being so insanely depressing that it loops back around to being comedic. It reads like the grouchy ramblings of a teenager who read Watchmen once and now thinks everything has to be edgy and dark and bleak and sexual and violent and deconstructive (so Zack Snyder, heyoooo!), and it attracted a fanbase that takes it seriously because of course it did. Well, that's what Ellis says anyway.
@@ToaArcanEven so, to put this much detail and effort into a joke, almost makes you question just how much of a joke it really is. Don't get me wrong tho, some of the things here are absurdly funny like Ghost Rider, but what happened to Spidey, Hulk and Wolverine isn't even funny, it's just tragic.
@@carlosjavier771that’s because the artists are not Warren Ellis and based on what you see here, they took it very seriously. It’s essentially a writer making the most ridiculous, stupid and edgy comic plot he could think of and then the artists taking it in a very artistic and serious direction. As a result, all the normies who don’t read literature for shit just assume the story matches the art’s quality, gaslighting themselves into thinking that it’s a statement about the world right now when really it was just Ellis taking the piss
Call me crazy, but my reaction to this isn't misery. It's hope. Everything that went wrong did. That's such a fragile state of affairs. Every single day is a bad day, and that's the reason why things are the way they are. I couldn't help but reach the ending and think "but tomorrow could still be the best day ever". Just one real marvel - even an ordinary marvel, without anything paranormal involved - could make a better world. Just one single good day could change everything.
How can you mention Ellis without mentioning Transmetropolitan, it is both his most brilliant series and an indictment of everything he is as a person. Also it is worth note that Seal was the guest speaker at a protest group and got roped into the Chicago 8. He was a target of the FBI and they were going to get him anyway they could. And of course Ellis gives him a giant Afro.
I get that it’s a parody of Marvels. But if you think about it, it’s also how it would be if you think about it. The Hulk would be a walking tumor. Frank Castle would die on a mission quickly. Wolverine would be cancerous, along with Spider-Man. Fury would be a crazy man. Nobody has that much experience without going crazy or having PTSD. The thing that turns me off is the addition of gods. I did like the Thor gag. But Galactus & Surfer kind of turned me off because of the setting and feeling of the story. It worked for Thor, but it didn’t work for the actual gods.
The music you tend to go with fits perfectly for this as well as your video on The Crow. Props to you and keep up the good work. Ruins genuinely saddens me because it reminds me a lot of our own world, but I suppose that's the point.
man the crow is just sad. I mostly can take a lot of dark stuff but nothing hurts more than a what if. Their relationship was cut short and basically the last thing she saw was ugly dudes R@ping her. Man that just sucks.
Marvel Ruins is amazing. The art is great. I own both issues and I feel like I own a cursed book or something because of how crazy the art looks. I’ve never see anything like it
I think the chaos and calamity displayed in this comic is unique in one specific way: it can assuredly give you an appreciation for the heroes - and villains - and the struggles that they overcome. All it takes for some people is one bad day (DC reference, yayyyy) ( /^ω^)/♪♪
Amazing videos, btw i recommend the punisher max comics if you havent read em, generally all of garth Ennis' punisher runs are stellar. It's both the definitive version of the character and one of the most top tier comic runs ever made imo. Would love to hear your thoughts on it in a future video
based on the story itself, i can kinda see how the author perceived it as a black comedy, with the protag rambling on about where stuff went wrong and shit. But the art, holy shit, that is some fantastic and disturbing work.
If you want recommendations on dark marvel comics, there are many that focus on the end of the world. There is "the end" anthology, particularly hulk, fantastic four, and punisher, old man logan, dark ages, and god of thunder. They all provide unique apocalyptic scenarios and how the characters face the end times. For the worst story about this, there is always ultimatum.
Loved this video, didn’t know this comic existed until now. A dark comic/ manga id love for you to check out is Remina by Junji Ito, it’s pretty grim and it’s basically… well imagine if Galactus was a Lovecraftian planet and there weren’t any superheroes to fight him. Story also gets a bit weird/silly at parts though
@@bananatiergod haven’t read Uzumaki yet, and I’m kinda new to Junji Ito myself. I don't read comics at all but as someone who grew up looking at Terese Nielson's works all the time, her works are surreal and incomparable to the styles similar to hers'. There's just no way to fully replicate her style and without losing that mysticism that Terese channels into her works.
"God found dead in space" has to be one of the most macabre sentences i've read, not only these people have to deal with everything going wrong they have the cold corpse of God floating in space as a reminder of how hopeless their universe is
i’ve never seen a deep analysis on this run, only ever like 10 minute videos. thank you for this it’s an amazing video ❤ definitely gained a new viewer. time to binge your videos
Night Cries is probably my favorite piece of Batman media ever. That cover art is hauntingly gothic, yet gorgeous and melancholy, and the story… God damn, I had NEVER been so on edge.
I would love for you to cover the Marvels limited run now. I went and read it after this video and it blew me away. I'm also a sucker for Ross and his art. Great video!
I bought Ruins some years ago, love it. I feel like it gets more flack than love, like it's dark for the sake of being dark. But i love alternate stuff in comics, there's a reason i have nearly every What If? ever made. I lent my friend both Ruins and he said it looked like a nightmare lol. I think it's a better take than most darker comics. Maybe you can check out Crossed, it's pretty gnarly, too.
I think this is a comedy because it’s a horrifying spin on the Marvels comics but it’s such a turn in the opposite direction that it’s almost comedic in a way. Here’s these beloved really well made comics that won a lot of awards and then here’s the comic that is literally the complete opposite of those comics in the most horrifying way. Even the titling of Ruins was a spin on the Marvels.
Batman: Red Rain and Wolverine: Weapon X: Insane In The Brain are two comics I think you'd like too. Especially the Wolverine comic, it has great art, and shows a more vulnerable side of Wolverine. As for Red Rain, it Batman as a vampire... I mean, its doesn't get much better than that... Also, any planes to cover Watchmen, V For Vendetta, Sandman, or Batman: Damned?
I highly recommend this comic series that definitely deserves a lot of love. The Goddamned. This story is set in a time before the biblical flood. After Cain killed his brother Abel, he wanders the wasteland in search for an end of his eternal life. What’s even darker in this story is Cain travels a world that was altered by him. Making his suffering all the more painful.
36:28 one possible explanation is Time Travel. Like Zoom said in The Flashpoint Paradox, "You broke the time barrier, Flash, "time boom". Ripples of distortion radiated out through that point of impact, shifting everything just a tiny bit." There is a lot of time travel in the Marvel Universe. Caps cannibalism could have been caused by some absence of a time travel adventure that was supposed to happen or by the Temporal boom directly. Or maybe it was even Caps cannibalism itself that was the cause. Hes widely considered the spirit of America. Maybe he somehow socialized the wendigo curse? 🤔🤔🤔
That's a terrific analysis, glad I've found the channel! If the volume of the music carpet were a little lower your voice would come out clearer, tho, some times the audio is a tad muddled up because of that. Keep up the good work!
31:35 Not really In Thor's first appearance, he was a normal human being named Donald Blake who came across Thor's hammer and was granted his powers. So in Earth-9591 (The World of Ruins) Donald Blake is just a crazy man who believes he's Thor, there's no god version of Thor in this universe as far as I know.
Ive heard that the Hulk was based on Chu Chulain which was a Celtic "superhero" who would transform by turning himself inside out... This makes me believe it even more
Marvel built it's popularity by telling stories of superheroes with flaws and difficult personal lives, something DC would go on to adopt. Haven't read either in years but I imagine being bought by Disney might have taken some edge away.
I think it's an excellent writing decision to have Spider-Man be the last paranormal we see in the story. Not only that, but have him indirectly cause our protagonist's main plight, and even further indirectly ruin the last hope for a potentially better future is a seriously dark perversion of what Spiderman means to Marvel and a lot of fans. Great stuff, the perfect punctuation for this piece.
So I know you mostly do darker comic books and I’ve loved every single one of your videos, but I would love if you’d cover spider man life story it’s one of my favorite comics of all time and the way you present and explain all the details in you’re videos is incredible and it would make an awesome video, regardless great work as always always look forward to the videos!
love the video! not sure if anyone mentioned but the drugged out guy claiming to be thor is a reference to his secret identity when he was on earth as a doctor
I never thought a grimdark take on the marvel universe would be nearly as well done and devastating as Ruins, but I was thoroughly floored and emotionally drained by it all the same.
I’ve never been a fan of marvel comics or movies, however I saw a tiktok of spiderman in this universe, and it really interested me. I love all disturbing and uncomfortable things and when I found out there were more superhero’s talked about in this (it might seem obvious but I’ve literally never seen a comic irl, let alone a marvel one) I knew an analysis would be just my thing
I think ellis may have been using the term "comedy" like Dante used it in " The devine Comedy." idk about you, but dante's Inferno doesn't really tickle my funny bone, lol. Great vide btw. Im a die hard marvel fan and ive never heard of Ruin. Taking a quick trip to amazon right now lol
I love the detail that as Phil’s health gets worse and he starts dying so dose his Marvel universe around him It just hurts to see what happened to The X-Men, one of my favourite teams and characters reduced to this
Its funny that this video crossed my radar when it did. I have been thinking about my love of darker material a lot recently and this nightmare book was in my mind today. Low and behold, youtube dropped this in my recommendations. Very good work and definitely following for more. If you are down for comics outside of the big two by an all star creator, might i suggest Wytches or Severed by Scott Snyder of Batman fame?
