That’s such a well written ending. The protagonist finally got the antagonist to feel fear which sort of puts their pain on equal footing but at the cost of the antagonist’s family being manipulated and traumatized. Revenge really is like that when you think about it.

talking about the ending, my fave bit of 'revenge is a fools game' is from the Punisher Max comic arc 'kitchen irish' Long story short, the punisher helps a young man get to kill the terrorist who killed the guys Dad young man: ......i don't feel any better. my dads still dead and i don't feel any better. His friend gestures at the Punisher who's just walking away: that man's been avenging his family non stop the last twenty years, does he look like he feels any better?

I feel like the idea of using the killer's family during the guillotine scene isn't to hurt them. They are just more victims to the game being played. Using them creates the only situation where the killer may feel a sense of remorse/regret for his actions. Had he not been a loaner psycho neglecting his parents and son, they wouldn't be there to tug at the door and drop the blade. He didn't need them in life until this last moment when it is life or death (ha). The shouts and misunderstanding and confusion between them really points at the missing connection. Then the connection goes missing and yea.... Cheers great video!

I think the ending is left quite ambiguous. The protagonist was half crying, half laughing at the end and the film shows evidence to suggest that he enjoyed the cat and mouse game just as much as the antagonist did. The film title is brilliant because it's how both the prot and antag see each other. One of my favorite films of all time.
@boutdamntime

I saw it more as his realization that he went through all of that revenge to not even get an ounce of suffering from the villain because he was right, as a psychopath they don't feel suffering the same as we empaths do. He hates the fact that he's doing the same things the villain did and even included the family into his revenge and he's so overwhelmed by all of his emotions, hence why he's laughing and crying because everything that he has done for revenge brings up all types of emotions. He feels even worse than when he started all of this and it leaves the viewers thinking that the protagonist wishes he never went through all of it in the first place- just for his fiancee's family to get caught in the gunfire and just for the villian to not regret and seek repentance for his actions. In the end the protagonist lost way more than what he gained from his revenge.
@Warm_Ice0
@Warm_Ice0 23 часа назад
The villain still won, he got his licks while Hyun endangered people by letting him free. It might be over for Soo Hyun after all that. He lost everything and all he did will haunt him forever. Chul's son might even turn psycho bc of what he saw. When I read that it was a revenge movie with Lee Byun Hun and Choi Min Sik as the leads, I was expecting full action but it was more than that. It was a thrilling ride from start to finish. I really wish they kept those deleted scenes in tho.

This is a fantastic breakdown and takeaway of this movie. I watched this for the first time many years ago and I purchased it on DVD which is something I seldom do. I watch it every now and again when I'm in the mood for some good revenge action but also in a mindset of accepting the darkness it washes over me as the story progresses. It would be higher on the rotation if it didn't come at such a heavy emotional toll but that keeps it raw. This film is a dark jewel with phenomenal acting and a story line packed with depravity rarely seen. All of that makes for a relentless ride through a cautionary tale. So much crazy + sinister = watching this makes me feel like I've been through the wringer but only AFTER I've survived a cocaine bear attack. It is not a happy ending but still so worth the watch.

i really do love the underlying theme of the act of violence affecting families and their children for generations, in the way that the protagonists wife was murdered while carrying their unborn child, his path for revenge getting the police chiefs daughter murdered, and in the ending having the family of the antagonist live on knowing they essentially murdered their own son/father themselves; of course not intentionally but.. i really do like that underlying theme

It is a lesson im glad i learned young. Much better to practice forgiveness and if you cant forgive, then that is fine, but move on and try and put those who hurt you behind you as best you can. It is a difficult thing to do, that whole forgiveness thing, but it truly is the best way to live. It sets you free from the ones who hurt you and they will no longer hold any power over you.

one thing I always wondered about the ending is that is the killer just fearing for his own life when he's warning his family not to enter? or is he also fearing for them because he doesn't want them to see him be killed and be Traumatised? as in the previous scene the killer acted like he wasn't afraid to die and even egged the main character on to just get it over with but now he acts afraid. and we know he cut his family off years ago so I've always been kinda unsure about this aspect of the ending? as to Wether part of his fear was due to concern for them or not? or Wether his whole I don't fear death thing was just an act and he was purely scared for his own sake.

This reminds me of a revenge manga from the website Mangadex, titled "Maria No Danzai"

Dude, I remember reading comments under videos on youtube of scenes from this movie. People in the comments saying he felt closure at the end really pissed me off. They didn't get the point. Like, bruh.... Also, off topic, I recommend The Hunt (2012) starring Mads Mikkelson.

I’m not sure how you could get closer from that ending. Those tear say literally anything else then closer.

I honestly would love a sequel. One where Soo-hyeon realizes the mistake he has done at the end of I Saw The Devil. He created a new monster. A new devil. Kyung-Chul’s son. The title of the sequel? “I saw the devil too.”

The best serial killer movie ever made. You can't change my mind on that.
