0:41 I think a good thing to consider is that the kids want to They are inspired by others, given gifts of great power with a great responsibility to use, have some sort of drive, and much more which results in it being their choice to go out. It’s not safe but the adults can’t force them out of the life so the best they can do is tutor them, keep them safe, and be there to comfort them when things go wrong.
The first Junji Ito story I ever read, was about this crazy woman who was obsessed with removing her skin and making her family like she is. Messed with me when i was younger, a bit goofy now but it has its moments.
I love horror stories that make you really feel like you're going crazy alongside the main character. That's one of the biggest things I enjoyed about Smile. It reminds me of the book Come Closer by Sarah Gran where the main character is slowly being possessed by a demon.
I think theories like this are fun to think about, but I am very skeptical whether any of them are put there consciously by Kubrick. He may be using images to allude to other subjects, but the film stands in its own, with its own text and subtext about the destructive consequences of alcoholism and obsession on a family unit. I’m also deeply skeptical of “evidence“ that appears to be “compelling“. One can interpret images to meanmean certain things, but that doesn’t make those visual elements “compelling evidence“ of Kubrick’s intentions. For example, the native American imagery in the film is completely unremarkable given where the film takes place. There are countless hotels in Colorado, Utah, and Arizona that have a Native American theme. To designate this aesthetic choice as compelling evidence of a sub textual narrative of the Native American holocaust is questionable, at best.
The theories that make the most sense to me are the Minotaur theory, the Native American theory, the reincarnation theory and the Jack + Danny theory. Also I kinda like Danny opening the door theory, bc I’ve always liked that the ghosts in the overlook don’t have any psychical power. To the point where you can question if they’re really there or if they’re a manifestation of jacks insanity.
32:30 I couldn’t see Kubrick before you put that up there at 32:36, but I did think I could see Luke Skywalker for a second there in the earlier shot! 😂
This is the best comic deep dive channel I've ever seen ,as another aspiring artist I really hope your channel blows up beyond belief , cause this content is incredible.
I think we don't enjoy watching the suffering. I personally feel awful seeing the character go through the pain, but love seeing them grow and overcome their suffering to become greater people. Sometimes trauma makes someone worse overall, but you can develop and become better cause of it. Not saying everyone should have to become perfect like superman, but definitely don't become batman.
