In this video, I discuss the dark side of fitness; how fitness can become damaging to your health and even toxic.
Toxic fitness is on the rise, in fact. We’re seeing more and more young people turn to desperate means to improve their physiques - at the expense of their own health. We’re seeing fitness become increasing cliquey. We’re seeing body image issues.
It’s a tragedy that something that’s supposed to make you healthier, stronger, and happier, can so easily lead you down a dark path.
So, in this video - which is the first instalment of a two-parter - I’ll be talking about some of the most prevalent issues contributing to toxic fitness.
Today, we’re looking at:
* Unrealistic body standards
* Body image
* PED use
* Wasting money on supplements and digital products
A lot of this stems from a similar place: a desire to reach unachievable standards and the belief that, when you do, everything will become better. I call this: Muscle Hustle Culture.
Stay tuned for part 2. And, meanwhile, what do you think are some of the hallmarks of “toxic fitness?”

i feel bad for Gen Z. They spend tons of time on social media where tons of "natty" social media influencers claim you can gain 50 pounds of lean muscle in 6 months by eating nothing but chicken breast, broccoli, and rice. They've also got even more unrealistic movie stars on TV than millennials or Gen X. Hugh Jackman and some other stars have passed out because they have to starve themselves and then dehydrate themselves to beef jerky for shirtless scenes and it can take days of prep to film a single scene and even then they've got hours to get multiple takes before they get too weak to stand and he and most other actors claim they get that fit with pretty conventional diets and they post fake workout routines to make themselves seem more approachable and more normal.

Fully agree. I didn’t have a clue that you could improve yourself that much when I was in my 20s. But once I hit 30 and started educating myself about the topic and taking training/diet/rest seriously, it only took about 3 solid years (on top of sporadic training throughout adulthood) to get a physique that looks very similar to what he displays here. Having good role models is so important to give you direction and make good choices. There’s definitely other RU-vidrs like Alex Leonidas, Natural Hypertrophy, and GVS that give incredible information and examples to follow

@TheBioneer
@TheBioneer 7 месяцев назад
Physical pension! Love it! That said, I really need to sort out my financial pension 😅
@CarlYota
@CarlYota 6 месяцев назад
The reason why people need financial pensions is because they don’t have thier health when they get old. All they can do is sit around in pain watching T.V. My evolutionary psychology teacher has a phrase “animals don’t retire.” There is a well known link between mental health decline and “irresponsible” retirement. It’s like putting a wild animal in a cage ant taking care of all it’s needs. That is not how it is designed to function. It has instincts and it won’t be well unless it is getting to act in accordance with them. People retire with nothing to do. And when you remove the need to go interact with the world many of them lose purpose or even the will to live. They are simply not that happen sitting around all day doing nothing. So you should be sure you have a replacement in place before you remove your need to participate in life. Retirement is just another modern unhealthy concept like junk food, lack of physical activity, and chronic psychological stress.
@CarlYota
@CarlYota 6 месяцев назад
Also structuring your life so that it is more physically demanding is useful. My table is a foot off the ground (like in traditional Japan). My bed is a Japanese futon on top of a layer of yoga mats. I only sit in a chair the normal way when I’m driving. Basically you won’t lose the ability to deep squat or sit on the floor or get down and up off the floor if that’s how you live. People use modern furniture as a crutch to degrade and become literally nonfunctional. At some point you stop training as a sport and you start training for health and function. Ultimately strength needs to serve movement. Deadlifting for deadlifting sake isn’t what it’s about. Being able to sit on the floor and play a board game when you’re 20 and 30 and 50 and 70 and 90 is what it’s about.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Best course of action is to simply top caring what others are doing, stop caring what others might think of you, and focus on yourself, focus on YOUR goals. It's the only way forward.
@ithinkthereforeitalk935
@ithinkthereforeitalk935 7 месяцев назад
I don't know why people are spreading this erroneous idea. Comparing ourselves to others is just what it means to be human, whether you like it ir not. Our brain is wired to look for patterns in literally everything and make comparisons. So you are basically suggesting people be something else, not humans? Good luck with that.🤣 Also you simply cannot know how good you are relative to the rest of population/your neighbours, friends, etc if you live in your own bubble. Of course, it's silly to compare yourself to world-class athletes but why souldn't you be striving to be better than (or as good as) other amateurs? What's wrong with that? Let's imagine a hypothetical situation. You can do one pull-up now, after a year of training you still can only do 3 pull-ups. Well, you can say that you are making a lot of progress, 200% increase on your previous result... But if you start looking for information on how other semi pro athletes train and inadvertently comparing yourself to them you might find that what you've been doing is a big waste of time and if you want to succeed you need to copy at least some aspects of those guys' training. Then in a year you can compare yourself to them again and see if you are doing ok or not. See, most of the time you need to compare yourself to others and seek their advice, if you don't have any feedback and the yardstick by which your measure success is you and only you , then what you've achieved can be in fact a failure, not a success. And the worst thing is that you won't even know that.
@rampagesmackssons508

@ithinkthereforeitalk935 i think who and what you're comparing yourself to, aswell as how you're comparing yourself is the issue.

Comparing yourself to yourself is also a big problem though. Struggling to achieve a goal you've peaked at in the past is worse than not being bigger than Chris Bumstead.
@CarlYota

I think it’s better to understand what makes a human brain like something, dislike something, or be apathetic. The error comes in what you misunderstand this. You like what benefits you. You dislike what harms you. You are apathetic towards neutral things. This how brains work because there is an infinite amount of things to focus on and you need selective attention. Most things are neutral. You should completely ignore most things. If neutral things enter your attention your attitude should be apathy. You should not care one way or the other. So armed with that basic knowledge people should compartmentalism thier goals. A man likes it when he gets his deadlift up to 405. He likes it because it benefits him. He makes a mistake called egocentric bias when he thinks that OTHER people will like it too. It doesn’t benefit other people nor does it harm them. Therefore we should expect other people to NOT CARE about our physique. See how that logic works. If you want to benefit other people then leave yourself out of it and do what’s good for them. If you do what’s good for you then don’t expect anyone else to care. This is why on Fight Club, Brad Pitt says “self improvement is mastuerbation.” It benefits you and you’re the only one who cares. Benefit others when you want to please others. Benefit yourself when you want to please yourself. Do not conflate the two. Other people are not aspects of yourself. They are separate egos. It’s called theory of mind. And humans are supposed to develop it around age three but we seem to carry this ego bias the rest of our lives. The more narcissistic you are the worse it is.

Shortcuts are the problem. All the best things in life are hard, but with the right amount of effort nothing is impossible.
@JeeYaoKuneDo
@JeeYaoKuneDo 7 месяцев назад
To add nuance to this, if people applied their physique goal logic to other feats of physicality, it would become clear that the majority of us will STILL not be in the top 1 %, even when taking shortcuts. Most won't sprint as fast as Bolt or swim as fast as Phelps, even when using PEDs. It's weird that most people don't realize that the top physiques on YT and SoMe platforms are the equivalent of being exposed to the elite specimens in sports.

I think it is unfair how much responsibility we attribute singularly, in many issues. Whilst iti s true that fake naturals have been dishonest, and are thus doing something bad, it is still true that if from the beginning your goal was to be the best you possible, to be teh healthiest you possible, it would not affect you at all whether orn ot others are big. Or if they are more ''shapely''. You cannot develop these neuroses without you, yourself, being envious. That too is a failing.

There's alot of wisdom in this video. Especially the bit about dangerous shortcuts. Your health is one thing you don't want to play fast and loose with in the name of results, as it generally doesn't get better with age, injuries are difficult or impossible to fully recover from, etc. Preserving what you have is even more important. Young people can be taken in with an all-or-nothing attitude: besides being young and prone to not considering the long term, our culture often doesn't value virtues like moderation, patience, and humility.
@Phreestyle1
@Phreestyle1 7 месяцев назад
I've been working out in gyms for 45 years, and something I've noticed recently is the number of young guys that are getting testosterone level tests. This worries me as it is putting a number on manhood or masculinity. They get the test and then agonise if they are on the low side of some arbitrary number, And they don't just agonise about their 'score', but start TRT treatments - which is an industry that seems to have popped up like a mushroom in recent years. This is, I think, a very worrying development.

Great video. Body dysmorphia is out of control right now. The media was always to blame, it's worse now that social media is everywhere.
@CarlYota
@CarlYota 6 месяцев назад
Body dysmorphia has the component of not just seeing yourself differently than what you actually look like. It also makes the mistake of thinking other people think and feel as you do. This is called egocentric bias and it’s a devastating error to make. The truth is that other people are not you. They don’t like what you like. They like what they like. You like what benefits you. They like what benefits them. The idea that people will like me if I’m pretty or fit is complete delusion. Being pretty or fit does not benefit others. Other people like what benefits them. They are apathetic towards things that neither harm nor benefit. This includes a teenage girls body. Nobody else cares. People really need to get that through thier head. If you really want other people to like you then SERVE them. Don’t self improve in ways that don’t benefit others. Selflessly serve others if you want their brain to like you.

My 5 cents on the subject...try to figure out for what kind of physical activity you're talented and what brings you joy. Focus on that. Not everybody can be a worldclass powerlifter and not everybody has the genetics to be a fitness model. I tried for a long time to be as strong as possible. Sucked at it, never looked like I aspired to and hurt myself over and over again. For me it's much easier to stay lean and I pick up martial arts techniques pretty quick. So I stick with that and enjoy it.

I like the fact that you've put out not only videos like this, but other videos that touch on the philosophy of training and well-being. Your videos and training ideas have significantly helped me in my daily tasks. For example: I work as a paramedic. Yesterday, we had to carry a morbidly obese patient out of their house (they were +450 lbs.). With five of us using a "soft stretcher" to carry this person, we had to use one hand each. The bulk of the weight of that person was where I was carrying, thus meaning that the handle was heavy and cutting into my fingers. Because I took your suggestions to work on grip strength and make it a priority, I managed to carry that weight without stopping or even dropping that person. I have you to thank for that!

Hello. I have been watching your videos for many years. My experience with this was back when I was 12. I enjoyed reading magazines. I tried a few of those workouts, but I always fell back into body weight exercises. Calisthenics, isometrics. I used both, because I enjoyed the feeling of tight muscles. I was able to do things that my body needed. I also have health issues so I trained, and still do when I feel better. When I feel sick I don't. These days I still train for mobility. It's become very useful, because I'm aging. I'm 57 in 5 months I will be 58 years old. I don't use a cane. I have a lot of body aches too, but I don't look my age. I eat vegetables, salads, fruits, grains, pastas, rice, and beans. Dairy, eggs. I also used medicines for my lungs, diabetes, blood pressure too. I also use pain pills. I do what I can for mobility, because it's helped me for years. I never listened to anyone, because I knew what my body needed. Exercise is a medicine, and it helps when you use it the way your body needs it. I focused on pushups against the wall, squats, and calf raises. For the fore arms I use hand grips. I do reps until my muscles can't do anymore. One set only. I do this 2, or 3 times a week. The rest of the time it's normal living. I don't do ab work, because of back issues. They never helped me anyway. I do slow twists. I can feel the muscles tightening around that section. Once I feel that I stop. Listen to your body. I do. Don't over do anything. Injuries are not worth it. I never had any.

I agree with everything said here Adam. Fitness should always be about our actual physical fitness & long term health & wellness. It’s possible to still do that in natural bodybuilding as long as you come from a balanced approach that still focus on flexibility, cardiovascular health, and other areas that won’t lead to any extreme measures or short cuts taken (and it also shouldn’t be an expensive endeavor either as no supplements can replace a solid healthy diet and the consistent hard work invested in the gym or doing whatever training you do). 💪

Forty years ago, long before RU-vid and Internet, I was following the advice a Bodybuilding magazine with its professional photographers and heavy marketing of equipment, vitamins and protein powders. I trained hard, but working night shifts and lacking sleep, I didn't make the progress I wanted. My goals were not unrealistic, but the training regime I was following was, because there was one thing I didn't know and which Mr JW didn't tell us; most of those bodybuilders, with their multiple set, daily workouts, were on "medical assistance". I've made more progress in health, fitness and even strength in the last few years, doing Calisthenics, than I eve managed following the impossible routines of steroid users.

Idk if you'll wind up reading this man, but I was really pleasantly surprised with your short on what it means to be a man. And this is good shit too. Keep fighting the good fight. I had to make my journey alone, but its people like ypu who use your platform and knowledge to shape young people for the better that make it all the easier for the next generation of fitness enthusiasts to carry themselves out into the world well rounded and ready to help others better themselves too.

Can't say I believe Jeff is natural, but he does give good advice. He's so lean he looks more and more like a skeleton in the face as he ages.

You have 16 year old boys thinking it's necessary to jump on tren. Despite my own body dismorphia, I can't imagine what painful things go on in their minds to think that these life altering steroids will improve their quality of life.

They fail to understand how people work. They think if something makes them happy it will make other people happy. This is narcissistic. Other people like what benefits them, not what benefits you. I think there comes a point on every lifters career when they realize they just got thier strength goal and nobody else gave a crap. No girlfriend, no promotion, no celebration from friends. Nobody else cares because it’s a selfish beneficial pursuit. This is all fine but it reveals the harsh truth of reality. This is not a single player game. It’s understandable that a teenage boy doesn’t realize this yet, especially in our narcissistic digital culture.

Thank you Adam, I've also been thinking about using less the internet since I'm getting kind of influenced by the propaganda, male standards and why should men hate women... I think that the real life isn't as harsh as the internet paint it, so I'll be exploring it more. Thank you again for your videos! ❤

Bruh, the internet is just a tool and it's often the reflection of who you are. For instance, the YT algorithm is not gonna suggest you watch mindless videos if you regularly opt for high-quality content.

One of the reasons I liked your channel was that you have interesting content that shows creativity and thoughtfulness and you left politics out of it. Bit discomforting that you feel the need to comment in a rather uninformed and shallow manner on topics that many others (both left and right) cover in depth. If you do decide to enter the fray, perhaps more extensive reading and a little balance may help your case.

great video! I agree with everything you said here. as someone who began training long before there was an internet it used to be the muscle mags that set up this impossible ideal but with the advent of social media it's like all that but to the 10th power. I can't wait for part 2!

I'm so successfully pleased the way your messages come thru and true for me in the over -nevermind- crowd. for all the yt stuff aimed at seniors, many still push a little too much "hype' towards youthfulness . . pay attention to what works and how to do it TY. watch a senior citizen , too many, who look for the first place to sit down . . SAD!

People need to understand how brains work. You like what benefits you, dislike what harms you, and are apathetic to neutral things. People have egocentric bias. They thinks others feel how they feel. Obviously this is wrong. Other people like what benefits THEM, not what benefits you. So knowing this, if you want other people to be impressed and like you, you need to do what benefits them. If you improve your own physique then you will like it but others with be apathetic. Because it benefits you and not them. Doing things for yourself is fine. Doing things for the approval of others is also fine. But these are going to be different things. Don’t self improve expecting to make others like you. Serve others if you want them to like you.
