Singapore, a maritime powerhouse and the world’s second-busiest port, is facing an unprecedented crisis. Shipping congestion has reached staggering levels, with delays more than doubling. Consequently, ships are now bypassing this renowned port to evade the problem. But what triggered this critical disruption at one of the world’s busiest ports?

The current abnormal situations in the Singapore port are caused by wars, both shooting wars and trade wars, and are temporary. Eventually they will stop and situation will be stabilized. Ships by-passing Singapore now will ease the congestions and allow faster clearance for the rest. No need to panic as there are no fundamental physical changes that will justify the construction of the Thailand Kra Canal by-pass.

You are wrong, perhaps you are not dealing with international trade. I'm already headache with delays from overseas imports that missed ETA schedule and has to bear empty warehouse costs and labour costs. These shall pass on to you as price increase. Although these maybe a few months but when near the end of the year when lot's of festive season where demand for goods also increase, it will continue to pressure all manufacturers as well as the whole chain to end consumers. Hope the government can provide more vouchers for us otherwise you and me shall see another round of inflation, not a sudden spike but gradually over the course of at least 6 months and more
@wmchan44
@wmchan44 4 месяца назад
@@philmu1983 You are stating the effects of the shipping disruption which is the results of the trade war (USA/China) and the shooting wars (Middle East and Europe). This disruption to shipping schedules need to be untangled and eventually will be normaized by clearing any backlocks. There is no magic wand solution to solve this problem and building any bypass will take years to achieve. Price increase is inevitable and apply not only to Singapore alone. Handing out more helicopter money to Singaporeans is never a good solution.

If it is a rail link, we can guarantee it is a write-off. Just look at the Mexican rail link trying to offer an alternate to the Panama Canal which could handle only containerships up to 13,600 TEU capacity. It seems the containerships prefer to use the US continental rail link from California to Chicago. Just to save 2-day of sailing time, the ultra-large containerships would have to wait for days to have their boxes transfer to the ships on the other end. With say 20,000 TEUs flowing from each end, it could take more than 2 days plus, with say 5-day wait, the amortized cost would easily cost us$ 0.75 million. it is mission impossible.
@marktan8074
@marktan8074 4 месяца назад
@@PahatRout Would a rail link make sense, I wonder...? Imagine a container ship having to unload its goods over on the western seaboard. Then it takes *a few* trains to load up all the containers unloaded from the ships, embark on a few hour's journey over to the eastern seaboard and then reloaded once again by a different ship. Imagine the container arrangement plans would be totally different. All that benefits from these arrangements would be the businesses created for this purpose.

Overhead cost reduce by 50% and I have visited Kyaukphyu area. Kra canal will definitely be build but not now maybe 10 years later where the tech is cheaper. Because of all this negative factors. China relentlessly is in the look out for an alternative shipping route avoiding the straits of malacca that usa can blockage its ships passing thru the straits. China finally found Kyaukphyu Port belonging to Myanmar with a 100 years lease. If this is completed atleast 50% of China merchant shipping to north, west and south China can now discharge its cargo at Kyaukphyu Port avoiding passing thru the straits of malacca. We know it’s not possible for Singapore to do away all the key negative factors that are the cause of our economy and living standard in sharp decline.

in order to keep its monopoly in shipping, Singapore can play very dirty! For example, they overbid China at a ridiculous HIGH price for the 2nd stage of construction of the Gwadar Port in Pakistan, and then sitting on it for 5-6 years, doing NOTHING! Because they do NOT want to see the port completion, and post competition with Malacca strait which is their biggest money maker. Finally, Pakistan was forced to break the contract, and rebid, then China won, and then finished the port, but Singapore caused a lot of damage anyway. and Pakistan had to pay a huge fine to Singapore unfair practice. So I consider what happening now is a belated revenge from the God to Singapore!.
