The 1974 film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre often ranks among the scariest horror films of all time, as the movie portrays its horror in a real and visceral way, with a stark visual style that makes you feel like you’re watching a documentary.
The franchise has a long and storied history, including some real-life criminals who inspired the iconic Leatherface, plus a subtext that you might not have ever considered.
From the fairy tale origins of the story to the disappointing salaries the actors received, let’s take a look at the dark untold truth about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

That's cool man. I live in the UK and for about 9 years the BBC filmed a sitcom all around the area where I live. It used to be like living on a film set for a few weeks because there would be crew trucks, blocked off streets and buildings made up to look totally different for filming. There were a few times I saw the actors around and about the place and once when I stood and watched them film a few scenes and ended up in the background too.

The original Texas Chainsaw isn't a gory film though but is a low budget masterpiece. The brilliance of it's execution is tat people believe it to be gory but in terms of the genre it is relatively bloodless

+Grandmastergav86 Agreed. Hooper understood that the power of suggestion would make it so much worse in the imagination of the viewers...plus, he saved a lot of money on fake blood, LOL!

@@eyellgeteven9928 The soundtrack is very frightening and well recorded as well. That adds a lot to the atmosphere. I don't think I'll ever forget that sliding door screech, followed by the sickening thud when Leatherface steps out and whacks the fella with the hammer. It says on a website about it that they actually made the noises by really hitting slabs of meat with various instruments and dubbed it in afterwards.

My favorite memory of TCM was a drive-in double date back in '82. When the girls went for a bathroom break, my buddy and I hid under the car and waited to scare them. When they returned, we reached out and grabbed their ankles. I nearly had my arm broken when my date started screaming and stomping. They both had to go back to the bathroom, by the way. The screaming also scared the hell out of several people in the cars around us. Good times.

Leatherface actually has a disorder. As seen in the 2017 prequel it reveals that he had a disorder and is afraid of victims. He kills them in self defence. He does what his family tells him to do, he listens to his mother. He is insane but he doesn’t know what he was doing wrong and he thinks its fine.

I love that whole movie - basically the title says it all. On the one hand, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" sounds creepy and grotesque; but then again, it's an accurate and quite sober description of what happened. That simple, low-budget style without gimmickry makes it seem all the more realistic. Then there's the arc of suspense: Although there are some dark omen, like the drunk man at the graveyard or the hitchhiker, these people have a pretty jolly trip - until then one of a sudden, it's all over, and the horror begins. And the last thing that I like are the many open questions: Where exactly does it happen? Who exactly are these people? Why exactly are they doing this? What happens to Sally afterwards - and to the killers? You don't get no answers to that - and they ain't necessary either.

I ate my steak while I watched this movie. When I was a kid, around 8 or 9, I wasn't eating steak, but when I watched it many years later, I did. I am a carnivore, but I have limitations. I don't eat pork; but yes, I eat beef. Anyways, back to the movie. It goes to show how rumors spread. I grew up thinking this was LITERALLY based on a true story in Texas. Now I know it was basically patchwork all in one blanket. Meaning, the creator of this story got different ideas from different REAL LIFE stories and wove it all into one crazy nightmarish movie. Cool.

Ok. Somebody help me out with this... I've heard (on screen) I forget whether it was TV or RU-vid etc. But some guy told this story; I swear. THIS is the most interesting and outrageous fact about the original 1974 film. Also unsettling. Guy said- Some crew member (the lighting guy maybe) had a 2 year old daughter on or around the set. She "stumbled in" on the scene with the woman on the hook and her boyfriend being hacked at on the slab by Leatherface. The toddler, it was said walked in screamed for two seconds, turned on her heels and bolted. Her Father chased after her, calling to her, saying "It's okay, Sweetie. It's Daddy. It's pretend..." Little girl ran and did not stop not even for her Father but he eventually caught her. Can anyone verify this story or direct me to a video or TV show that contains this anecdote?

I don't get how it keeps getting brought up that the Sawyer's cannibalism isn't confirmed in the first movie. Besides all the heavy suggestions, and Pam literally being found by Jerry in the meat freezer, In the scene when Drayton(Cook) returns home with Sally and starts beating Leatherface and asking him " where are the kids?" Leatherface starts rambling jibberish and frantically points to Franklin's wheelchair, the freezer. And the meat on the butcher's table. Some of, if not all that meat was from Sally's friends and Franklin, and the rest of them are in the freezer.

Surprised this bit was not added, as it is certainly dark. That girl on the meat hook? Definitely NOT acting. She was strung up with nylon and it was cutting into her. The 'last supper' sequence took something like 12 hours to film, in the middle of a Texas summer, with all the windows boarded up and no AC and probably not even fans. By all accounts, the filming itself was brutal.

I watched this movie in 2014, and ever since then, I know this is really wierd, I wouldn't drink sprite! I think it's because I was drinking sprite while watching the movie, and whenever I tried to get it after that, I thought of the humans being cut up and eaten

It's interesting that this film was an anti-meat one. I saw it as a vegitarian and somehow completely missed that point!

Think of a few actors playing a psycho,Jack in The Shining, the joker in Batman,The movie Psycho,Christopher walkins And joe Pesci. These guys are all great. And how about the guy who plays Chop Top in Chainsaw 2 ?For a B movie that guy should have gotten an Academy Award Nomination.
