There are many, many other issues with utilitarianism, chief among them being the lack of any burden of proof upon the person who claims an action will provide a certain outcome and simultaneously, a lack of responsibility for any outcome other than the one that is claimed. Gains are privatized, losses are socialized...

Really liked that last sentence 💪🏽 & yeah, I agree those are all problems within utilitarianism, among many more...

I find it alarming (but sadly not that surprising) to have seen people defending Hama. I even saw someone say "who's to say all of them were innocent" in regards to the villagers she imprisoned, which is a VERY fucked up way of saying "Your neighbor was a dick, so I'm going to lock you up too". Definitely brings certain totalitarian governments to mind. Just going from what we've seen, Hama only ever seems to have gone after random villagers and not the Fire Nation military. From what I could tell, the military may not even be aware of what's going on in the village. All of her empty platitudes of "winning the war" are just that, and even without what she was doing to the villagers, what she does to Katara (and indirectly Sokka and Aang) is what truly cements her as a villain in my eyes. The people who say she deserved a happy ending don't seem to understand that 7:45 IS her happy ending: She found a successor, and it doesn't matter to her if that successor ends up being traumatized by the knowledge that was forced. She also may have indirectly caused the death of Katara and Sokka's mother, but like you said, I can't exactly condemn her for using whatever she could to escape, even if the way she tested it on the elephant-rats give me serial killer vibes.

i disagree. in utilitarianism the needs of the majority are only more worth than the suffering of the few if both groups are utilitarianists.
@TheMeaningOfNerd
@TheMeaningOfNerd 2 года назад
wait, just to clarify. Are you saying that you think that Utilitarians only believe that the needs of the majority are most important if the minority is also utilitarian? Because if so, I don't think that the utilitarian cares for the world view of the minority in any case. Not saying that you believe that, that's just how I interpreted it🙏
@Funky_Duncy

@@TheMeaningOfNerd yes, but i agree with you that most utilitarianist wouldn't consider it. i read an article about that interpretation of utilitarianism where you can only do the calculation of the benefits and the suffering of people, if all of the people are utilitarianists. Unfortunately i cant find it rn. i think without that condition utilitarianism is pretty useless. but to be fair my philosophical highschool education regarding utilitarianism is about 8 years old, so i didn't read primary sources of that topic in ages.

@@Funky_Duncy Ahh okay, now I understand. & yes I think if everyone is an utilitarian within a society, utilitarianism would make at least some logical sense. But then again, I believe that's probably also why it can never work within the real world. You'll never be able to get everyone to agree on the same thing. Specially on something as controversial as that. But that's an interesting thought process, thanks :)
@Funky_Duncy

@@TheMeaningOfNerd well if everyone in a society would act like the categorical imperative, the concept of the categorical imperative would be awesome. i think thats the problem with most ethical concepts.
@TheMeaningOfNerd
@TheMeaningOfNerd 2 года назад
There's definitely some truth to that. But then again, I think there's also a lot of beauty in how that can never be the case. How we're all so incredibly different that it couldn't possibly happen. Bc it also means that, this endless difference between humans allows for the possibility of endless improvement & change. Of course it also allows for endless worsening but well, there's no good without the bad, I guess :P

I really dont like this interpretation of utilitarianism. It is very wrong of you, or anyone, to say that the ends do not justify the means. Read your script again, you argue that a utilitarian is wrong because a utilitarian says that a +ve outcome supersedes any moral ambiguity but those immoral actions that he commits will have unforseen -ve outcomes, so it is wrong But is that not utilitarian of you? "Because the end will eventually be bad."- That is your argument against "ends justify the means" That, to me, seems plain wrong. That is why I hate this argument. In my opinion, Hama is not a true utilitarian. A utilitarian(lets say his name is John) can never know the end because the end will come in future and we cannot know the future. Therefore, the outcome that John thought he was preventing, based on his prediction, could actually never happen. Thus, John would lose the justification for his actions. But if John was A TRUE UTILITARIAN he would do the 'right" thing because in the far future, the "right" thing has a higher probability of leading to a better outcome. So, dont say the "ends dont justify the means" or the utilitarianism is flawed, it's the application of the utilitarian ideology that is flawed in most cases.

Hey there, first of all thanks for the critique, I always appreciate criticism, specially if it makes me think of my own arguments. To address your criticism, yes that was utilitarian of me to make that point. But that kinda was the point. You see, many people often argue against utilitarianism through a moral lense. They would say something like: Even if the outcome is completely positive, it's immoral to justify that, to attain it, horrible means are OK. & I strongly agree with that statement. But in this video I was not trying to show the problems with utilitarianism through a moral lense but rather a logical one. By using their own mindset against them. Utilitarians think that to achieve a positive outcome, any means are justifiable. But the issue that they lack to understand, is that within their own mindset, it is paradoxical to enact something positive through horrible means bc it will inevitably lead to more problems in the future. So yeah you're right, hama is technically not a "true" utilitarian, & why? Bc such a thing doesn't exist and can't exist. You said yourself that it doesn't work bc people can't predict the future. But Utilitarians still exist, & those are the ones that think that the ends justify the means. It's that simple, you can also look up the definition of it. & I think that saying that the ends justify the means is immoral & on top of it illogical as well. But Utilitarians like to brush over the moral critique by saying that morality is complex,& that's why in this video I focused on the logical side of things & on using their own ideology against them. You may disagree, but I will just not believe that the ends justify the means & by what you commented, I don't think you believe that either. But I may be wrong, idk. Either way, thx for the critique & I hope you have a great day 🙏🏼💪🏼
