The Darwin Universal Razor - The Adjustable Safety Razor that Time and History Forgot

This razor wasn't the very first adjustable safety razor but almost. It was probably the first adjustable razor in the 20th Century. Patented in 1928 and sold into the 1950's. It was manufactured in England and invented by a early pioneer in the production of razor blades and cobalt steel production.

I have used both but use the Rolls all the time as it just shaves smoother and feels better. I find the Rolls easy to sharpen and keep sharp and to get to where I don't feel the blade at all. After posting this, I tore down my Darwin, did an ultrasound cleaning of the metal parts, rezoned the 2 razors, got everything just right and now it shaves great. No pull to the razor, super close, no drag or pull, and extremely comfortable.

Great video John. I enjoy seeing you bring out these old razors that you can strop and hone. Your little history lessons and dialog make the entire video complete. Im glad for videos like this. The Darwin Universal was a British competition to the Rolls Razor and shaves really nice. It's similar to the Rolls but with differences. My dad had several and I still have one. I prefer the Rolls but the Darwin was nice. Darwin razors are hard to find in 2019.

Im jealous! I have a rolls and want a darwin as well to have them both! But they aren't nearly as easy to find as the rolls.

The case for that razor looks like a jumbo sized harmonica. I hadn't heard of this razor before, though my barber has two Rolls razors in a display cabinet, along with other razors.

Very interesting video John. You got me into DE razors my friend after purchasing phenomenal Weishi razor, last week I won on EBay a beautiful Gillette Slim Adjustable, another great tool to shave with on hangover weekends. LOL.

Great video! I have a Rolls I treasure and get acceptable shaves. I have a feeling it would shave much better if I had it professionally honed, after all, it's basically just a straight on a stick. I like the Barbasol trick. You said it's a mix but you didn't mention the ratio of Barbasol to Water. Or Barbasol to Alchohol?

John can you recommend a good DE blade for me but it must not be expensive like Kai or feather as this is why I got into DE shaving as to save a fortune and I Tag you to make a video of your 5 favourite blades, I know you like golf, but I got thrown off St Andrews as I kept missing the ball and kept cutting the grass up, I am also a Cincinnatti Bengals Fan, all the best from a Rainy Scotland.

+cariza5 Don't know what are the less expensive options in Scotland. connaughtshaving.com/razorblades.html seems to have a good variety. Razor blades are such a personal preference thing. Would suggest you buy a single pack of a variety of blades and test them out or get a sample pack. Some of my favorites I saw listed were Treet Platinum, SuperMax Super Platinum, Any of the Personnas, 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge, Shark, ASTRA Green.

Nige Bray I have the same issue in the EU (American living abroad). Amazon doesn't send anything classified as "cosmetics" into another Amazon's territory, so you would have to get it from Amazon UK (I'm assuming there is one, because there's an Amazon for where I'm located.) Every shaving related thing I've tried has been categorised as cosmetic supplies. Even if the razors aren't, there is a whole list of things they won't ship to another Amazon's territory.
