The date of the birth of Jesus Christ has been talked about often. How accurate is the date of December 25th? In the following video, Fr. Panayiotis presents an overview of the debate and comes to some conclusions based on historical and biblical perspectives while also describing the available evidence.

Is there anything that St John Chrysostom didn’t do? He is worth a video in himself. Thanks so much for this open and transparent review of the sources.

Excellent teaching Fr. Pananyiotis!! It covered everything; the pagan holiday and various theories about the addition of the shepherds and angles times and seasons!! As I was listening and meditating on the teaching I couldn't help but remember that according to Holy Tradition the devil has ALWAYS try to counterfeit what is to come in God's Self Revelation. This was spoken of by The Lord Himself in Gen. 3. "I will put enmity between you and The Woman, and between your seed and Her Seed. He shall bruise your head and you shall be on guard for His Heel."-Gen. 3:15 And so we can notice in subsequent years and centuries right up until the Blessed Incarnation satan's attempt to convolute the Story of Redemption. The enemy moved through Pharoah in the edict to kill all the infants that were male to try to destroy Moses. The enemy under Herod did the same thing when Christ was an infant. So then, is it any wonder that the enemy would deceive a particular people group to worship apotheothize the sun around the same time Christ was born? No!! Not one bit!! God be Magnified no one can stand or thwart God's Plan of Salvation!! Amen!! The earth is being filled with the Knowledge of The Glory of The Lord as the waters cover the seas!!"-Habakuk 2:14. Restoration is happening and Creation is being brought back to God. Everything! Amen!! A blessed Nativity and Merry Christmas to all!! Amen!!

Thank you for this video. This is meat in due season for me! I'm a recent Orthodox convert, I grew up a JW, converted to the Hebrew Roots Movement/Messianic Judaism, and was totally swept up into the Dec 25th is paganism and Yeshua's (Jesus's) true birthday was during Sukkot/Feast of Tabernacles in Sept or Oct. This info here presented is truly mind blowing for me. Answers allot of questions. I'm going to have to watch it multiple times. God bless. Christ is born! ☦️

Besides the historical evidence, there is nothing wrong with pointing out the symbolism of the winter solstice- which St Gregory of Nyssa actually does in his Homily on the feast of the Nativity. The winter solstice is recognized in many religions as the most beneficial time of the year, the moment when the descending movement of the Sun is halted and the ascending cycle begins- with a gradual victory for light over darkness. So the Son of God is born when darkness engulfed the world and seemed triumphant and through His Birth, the victory of the true Light of God begins. If we understand natural symbolism and we understand that certain significances of this symbolism were understood by pre-Christian peoples as well, then there is nothing surprising that the pagans also held this date in honor, although from a merely naturalistic reason. As always, Christianity transfigures both nature and the old law, raising them to an entirely new level.

Good point! Well, that's less applicable in the southern hemisphere, where the December solstice is actually the summer solstice. But the symbolism behind the establishment of the date still is neat to know about.

B a s i m a . 1 marginal note, regarding the farming in historical times : even here at Finland, all husbandry animals were kept outdoors all around year. it was perhaps only 500 - 600 years ago, when people started to build first separate shelters also to their husbandry animals. - at least, in Finland's area. [ solid-housing-people started to move here from south, perhaps ~1000-1500 years ago? ] [[ at Scandinavia, we still have at least one live-proof about that outdoor-breeding : at Norway, there is still living a wild-sheep: middle of stormy snows! ]]

The fact Saint Chrysostom didn't mention the choice of the date was made to replace a pagan feast is a proof that the calendar identity between the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ and the pagan feast was arranged by the providence

I had read Emperor Julian the Apostate instituted the Pagan feast to obscure the Feast of the Nativity that had already been established by then because he was trying to erase Christianity from the Empire. I do not know the source for this, unfortunately.

Interesting tidbit: His math is a bit wrong, but it still comes out right. "In the sixth month" means 5 months have passed, putting Gabrielle's visit to late february, early march. A pregnancy lasts almost 10 months putting the birth of Jesus around the end of December. (p.s. the reason people think a pregnancy lasts 9 months is because it usually takes a month for a woman to realize she is with child)

Whenever Christ was born, I think December/January is a good time to celebrate the Birth of Christ, because He is the Light in the midst of darkness! (Isaiah 60) However I wonder about a few things concerning St. Chrysostom's interpretation: Luke 1 it does not say that Zacharias was (loted) HIGH Priest nor that he was minstering in the Holy of Holies - it only says he was priest and offered incense at the altar in the Temple. As far as I know, all priests did that any time of the year (please correct me if i'm wrong), so it was not necessarily the Day of Atonement (around September).
