Having worked with Davie for many years and tied his flies too, we've got to know him pretty well. Suffice to say, there's not much worth knowing that Davie doesn't when it comes to perfecting the art that is fly tying. We're delighted to have curated and shot this interview with Davie earlier on this year and hope you enjoy it. Tight lines.
Video by Patrick Tillard.

An ego the size of a #32 Gnat, kindness abounds and his humility is a beacon to all who seek knowledge, he is a great man. Thank you Davie, for teaching me to be better in many ways.

Yeah indeed: as I just said to my friend, him a true angler: there's many good lads and lasses at fly tying, but there's only one Davie McPhail.

This interview has been long overdue. Davie is a huge inspiration to us all and he is a pleasure to watch as he weaves his magic. His videos have passed on a lifetime of knowledge in just a few short years and for that I am eternally grateful. For the sponsors, I hadn't tried any Fulling Mill products before I saw them here, and while I'm not (yet) exclusively FM, I am extremely happy with what I have used so far. Especially the barbless hooks for both quality and selection. Thank you for supporting this fine gentleman.

Davie has earned his place in highest ranks of fly tying. His depth of knowledge experience and skills. They are only matched by his work ethic and the fact that he helped so many people to positively improve their own skill set to improve their enjoyment and effectiveness on the water.

Dear Davie - your videos have inspired me so much these past few years. Your skill is something to which I aspire but am unlikely ever to come close which keeps me continuously engaged and motivated. In my humble opinion you are the best teacher, presenter and ambassador of the craft and the sport. Thank you Sir. 🇨🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

Up until I saw one of Davie's first RU-vid videos I just tied to quickly fill a fly box. When I saw that first video it hit me that I needed to tie with a lot more care and intention. I can say that I've watched every video, practiced a lot of David's techniques and have become much better at this craft. I'm actually proud of a lot of the flies I've tied. Thanks Davie.

Davie McPhail deserves to be inducted into the Fly Fishing Hall of Fame. Not for his fly fishing abilities, though I'm sure he is a very well qualified fly fisherman, but for his tying abilities and his love for sharing his knowledge with the world through his videos. I have learned more techniques and patterns from Davie than anyone else. He has a natural way of instruction when you listen to him and watch how he ties. Before I tied flies I used to think I wasn't skilled or talented enough to tie a fly that could ever catch a fish. Davie proved me wrong. My favorite all time dry fly pattern is the Delaware Adams, which you see in my avatar. I learned to tie that from Davie's video and that fly is always in my box. Thank you Davie for taking the time to do what you do and share it with us. Davie's flies tied on a Fulling Mill hook. . . . you can't do any better than that.

In my opinion there is not a better representative for the sport and the skill of tying flies for flyfishing. A true sporting gentleman, and a big heart to match his ability. I am truly indebted to Davie for all he has done for making this an enjoyable and learnable skill.

Superb interview Davie and true to life. I'm 75 , still fishing every chance I can get although I'm limited of how far or how rough the bankings are etc. Like you I started at a very young age on my local the Clyde at Motherwell. Always found a fellow angler was eager to help the young ones and I'm still like that today. I can spend hours tying and have probably more duff flies than good ones but I still get excited every outing trying them. Rainbow, Brown, Grayling, Salmon it doesn't matter I love it. Keep on tying, stay safe, Big Davie

Well Davie I first met you about 15 years ago or maybe longer you were in Glasgow doing your stuff in the Angling Centre and we had bought some of your flies from Sportfish and we had used them when we fished up in Orkney then over in Lewis then in Sutherland and now I only fish up in Caithness and your flies caught more trout and sea trout than anything else that we used and there was one fly in particular we use on the dropper that’s been just unbelievable so years ago I asked you if you could tie us 50 of the same fly which you did during the winter time now my son Grant ties me the same fly not as good as you Davie but it still catches the trout and I’ve still got some of the flies that you gave me from back then so all I would like to say thanks for the wonderful flies that you show us on RU-vid and the way you explain everything so cheers Davie and stay safe and love to your family 👍🎣

Very enjoyable to hear your thoughts and reflections. Nice to get to know more of the man behind the vise. Thank you so much for the knowledge experience and expertness you share with this community. Your teachings have allowed myself and many many others to advance our tying skills well beyond what alone we would achieve. I write this with true heart felt thanks. Thank you Sir! If it wouldn't be to much intrusion to your private life. I would very much enjoy a shop tour. The mass of materials we all as hobbyist accumulate can be daunting task to organize and store. To see your approach and answers on this issue would be quite enlightening and enjoyable. Again thank you so much, from life long fan.

I started tying flies in 1978 and to be honest l thought I was pretty good at it. That is until I started watching your videos. I then realized that I had much to learn. And learned l have! I have gotten so much inspiration from you Davie and my tying is now on another level. But I will of course never rise to your upper echelon 😄. I will however continue to learn and get inspiration from you. Thanks a lot Davie and best wishes from Sweden!

I am often asked about fly fishing and tying, which came first and which I enjoy most etc. My reply is always the same. The former is a delight and the latter a dream. I love those days standing in Derbyshire rivers catching trout and grayling, it is a delight. On a cold winters evening with the sleet pushed hard against my windows by a strong north wind, I listen to Davie, tie a few flies, and dream of those summer fishing days.

Something came to mind while I was rewatching this Davie. There is a very nice young fly there named Nina who lives in Ukraine. She has left there and gone back home again, but the remarkable thing about Nina, is that she is an Artist in any medium and a year before she learned to fly fish, she was tying flies! Self taught and pretty good at it. She finally got into lessons and learned to fly fish. It always surprised me that someone would tie before they fished.
