You can really tell if a house is well built when it can withstand a strong typhoon like Odette; its roof was never blown off by the strong winds even if it sits on a hill, and no visible form of surrounding obstruction that could somehow weaken the winds. It's very well calculated, the windloads that could affect their home's form of sheltering. An engineer's expertise indeed.

Although Slater’s house was lucky and it wasn’t as bad as others, coming from a guy that experimented having a glass house in the philippines, he is an outstanding engineer. Also having the house on a mountain could have made it worse but, still Slater’s house was very durable even after a really bad super typhoon.

It was probably more on luck, our house and roof survived but its not even that well built and parts of our neighbors roofs flew off. Our house is almost 20 years old and the worse thing that happened was the roof was leaking. Slater said that if the branches we're hit on a different spot their whole house would break down.

I’m from the Philippines living now in Florida and here we experiences strong hurricane or typhoon and we do a lot of preparations before the hurricane. The windows are boarded that means we cover the windows with plywood or now a days using aluminum shutters. The reason for covering all the windows and even the doors is so that if a flying object hits it won’t break the glass that would then let the water in the house. I remember helping my husband doing all these things. The other things are… bringing in all the potted plants, patio furnitures inside the house so that they won’t be lifted by strong winds and be a flying weapon. Next is preparing enough foods and water that will last you for couple of days. Have candles, flashlights with good batteries, manual can opener, gas for the grill so you can cook even without electricity and tap water to use for bathing and flushing the toilet. Put your vehicle inside the covered garage or transfer them to a secured garage even if you have to pay. Fill up your car. Lastly, take some cash out from your bank in case because after the storm if there is no power, ATM won’t work. It’s a lot of work. I understand your situation and feel your pain. Stay strong!

Thankfully we are all safe that's the most important thing. God is good. We are now back in Manila we just let the family (our staff) stayed temporary while their house ginagawa pa.

I'm so glad you're all safe, but I've always wondered how well your house would fare in a typhoon, with all of that glass. I assume you discussed this with the architects and builders while you were building. It's so critical to consider when house building. My heart goes out to all of you in that area. God bless and please be safe ❤

So worth it lahat ng gastos nyo and you really did a great job in planning and building your home❤️ stay safe SkyFam!

First of all its nice to see you safe yun ang pinaka importante sa lahat. Grabeng lakas talaga ng bagyong Odette, giniba nya ang SKYPOD, isa sa mga hinahangaan kong bahay structurally wise na sinubaybayan ko hanggang finishing at akala ko typhoon proof na talaga ito but still the damage is very minimal pero nakakapanlumo pag nakita mo ang dream house mong devastated it's Hurting, pero tama ka you're still lucky compared to others. We pray for all the Cebuanos and all affected areas in Visayas.🙏🙏🙏🙏

Slater Young, man, I can feel how you are putting your brave faces on. This is heartbreaking but I felt in your voice, the look in your eyes... heartbreaking. but as you said, you are super lucky still and it is great to hear that in the midst of your devastation you still have humanity. You still have the care of and for others. With your character, as they say, it will be alright on the night.

Watching this and Krizzy’s vlog made me cry because I remember how we were during st yolanda in 2013. Yung literally sira bahay nyo because water was everywhere even on the walls tapos we cannot fix them until now because of financial constraints. Marami nangyari sa family namin since Nov8,2013 mostly health concerns and urgent medical needs of my mama that we had to prioritize over fixing our house. The only thing we were able to fix was our roof because it leaked and we needed to get it done because my late mother was a well-known diabetic and my nephew was 9mos old at that time and they were immunocompromised. I haven’t cried since that day and seeing this now flashes back all of the memories and ordeal we had to go through kasi ramdam mo gaano kahirap and kacostly for the couple and all of disasters survivors to reset and rebuild everything. But God is good, darating din time makakapag paayos kami ng bahay. Be strong, survivors. There is no hurdle that we cannot overcome. God bless you. Merry Christmas 🎁

This is just a friendly comment re the very recent vlog seen about roof leaks problem of your house. The roof profile that you used was "rib type" this type of roofing is designed with only one lapping installation as recommemded by the supplier, and check that out based on experience that is the big issue.

Maybe, a good challenge to engineers like you is to design or set building standards that are “Odette-proof” so to speak so that rebuilding in the aftermath of this devastating experience is not only a learning opportunity but a chance to rebuild the calamities brought about by climate change. And there’s a lot of facets to these challenges to improve the people’s habitat.

napaka solid ng bahay nila. I’m sure after nila mapapaayos tong bahay nila. mag papagawa na sila ng bunkers sa bahay nila para in case mag ka bagyo or sakuna ulit tatago nlng sila dun at kampante sila na safe sila at mag imbak ng supplies nila. kung ako magiging successful pag dating ng panahon. pipili tlga ako ng lugar na kung saan mag papagawa ng dream house ko. oo di natin masasabi kung san tatama ang bagyo or lindol or ibang sakuna. pero mas ok na yung umiwas sa dinadaanan lagi ng bagyo yung lugar at sigurado dpat may extrang pera tlga for emergency at mag baon ng panalangin lagi. ang dami kong napapansin na mga mayayaman napaka daming properties sa mga lugar na laging binabagyo ot binabaha. sasakit tlga ulo nila at umaaray sa gastos. sa panahon ngaon dpat safety first tlga at planado lahat at mag research kahit papano maiiwasan natin yung problema. lalo na ngaon pandemic.

I am just about to start planning (and building) my retirement home in a climate safe location - away from the shore, higher elevation and nestled in a valley like place - but I am not taking any chances. It will be built strong and will aim for disaster resiliency. I now have ample ideas on how to achieve this with the goal of no water ingress (steel shuttered windows and doors) and most likely composite concrete roof slab. I still plan to let a lot of light in by way of extensive use of tempered glass but it will have easy to engage steel shutters (maybe even automatically initiated). The idea is to limit the effects of 280Kph typhoons to minor cosmetic damage as a result of any projectiles that are generated. The garage, utility/store rooms and water/generator/solar control rooms will follow the same design objectives. Landscaping and external features will also consider reduction of potential hazards during high wind events and should be easy to restore. Ambitious it may seem (and expensive) but I've been telling my friends - BUILD STRONG, BUILD SMART, BUILD ONCE. And have a "Disaster Recovery and Preparedness Plan" by always having secure stockpiles of food and water in a secure storeroom... Most did not listen and have to learn the hard way. If this house I have envisioned were already in place during Yolanda or Odette - my family would emerge largely unscathed and be totally independent of the utilities and quickly resume whatever life offers post disaster. Our cars will be intact, we'll have power by way of an undamaged Genset and potentially my Solar Panels (which will also have protection) .. What about communications and Internet? Now that's where Elon Musk's Starlink (starlink.com) comes in... with an easily collapsible and portable dish antenna - I can be quickly reconnected with the rest of the world and even share it with my neighbors.

Here in Puerto Princesa the damage is also severe. In our place, this is already the 11th day na walang water and electricity. Big tree fell on our pool and part of our garage roof flew. It took us a week to remove the tree out of the pool. For almost 5 days no cellphone reception and internet. We cannot check whether our families and friends were ok. We are just lucky na walang nasaktan sa amin.
