What will you do the day before you die?
If you could predict how you would feel at the end of your life, what would it change in how you act today?
British film-maker Patrick Ney survived a brutal attack in Warsaw, Poland.
In this moving, emotional talk, you will learn how coming close to death can help you live your life in a better, more peaceful way.
Patrick Ney creates provocative films and documentaries about Poland, his new-found home. His films have had over 30 million views in 2 years. Paddy Ney is a British filmmaker living and working in Warsaw. He moved to Poland in 2010 and since then has been creating provocative, moving films about his new homeland’s culture and history. His films have been viewed over 26,000,000 times in the past 2 years alone. He specialises in short-form, social media content. In his day job, Paddy is Director at digital marketing agency James Cook Media. He is also the host of HiCashWeek, a weekly Polish-language business and entrepreneurship show for dynamic young Poles. “I have a simple test for what I’m doing,” he says, “it’s whether I can look my daughter in the eye and think, yes, this is making the world she’ll inherit a slightly better place.” Paddy regularly tours schools in Poland talking to young people about immigration, relationships and purpose and is a Friend and proud supporter of the Czerwone Noski charity. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you for this talk; yes love is vitally important to all of us - and when I say love it does not have to relate to religious concepts; I had someone physically attack me in 2013; they put a glass in my throat and bashed my head repeatedly against a wall; I survived but had a stroke related to my attack; I doubted love after that. I recovered from the stroke and built my life up to what it is now in 2021 in England - happy, industrious, confident, calmer, keener, tolerant and also loving. Yes love is very important - and you don't have to be religious to experience or to give love.

@James Brewer I was 18 in 1970. It was a great time for me. Got married in 72. Divorced in 76. With 2 kids. Life changed then.x Never found that love again. My ex abandoned his kids. He is now on his 3rd marriage with a mistress who followed him since 1978. He only married her 2 years ago through her begging. Since divorce it has been a big struggle but I managed to get a job and a nursery for the kids. And just got on with it. But there was nothing like 1968 when I met my ex and life was just so wonderful because I was with the man I loved.

"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home." Chief Tecumseh, Shawnee Nation

There is something very powerful in the saying "It is better to give than to receive". You'll also have to think about this one for a few moments till it sinks in: Isn't 'comfort' the number one thing we all want the most?. i.e. enjoyable situations, painless situations, stress free situations? 'Love' 'religion' come under 'comfort'.

The strength and power of love is unfortunately so utterly underestimated, and people don't realize we are all intimately connected by love. This beautiful planet earth was created out of and through, and because of love, and since we live on earth we are thus intimately loved. Love is all there is and without love, nothing exists. Love is every subject every object. YES.

Hi Richard, powerful post. This concept is something many of my Christian friends and acquaintances don’t understand and they severely underestimate the power of love by saying God has a place of eternal suffering waiting for people who don’t manage to “choose” to trust Christ before they die. Yet their own scriptures say, “Love NEVER fails.” Right there the whole threat of Christian orthodoxy is wiped out and they have no clue.

I feel very connected to this topic. Sometimes I ask myself and will ask others, "you only have one life, so how would you want to live your life?" We all got one life to live, and once we are gone, we are gone. I could imagine myself lying on a bed at my last day of life, reflecting my time I had. I would reflect what I had, should have, and would want to have done. Then I use that as my motivation to write my story, in other words, live life the way I want to live. At the end of your life, people who tried to bring you down would not matter, the small mistakes you made and blamed yourself for will not matter, and opportunities you could have taken but did not is going to feel really, really terrible. I am starting to learn to accept myself with who I am and learn ways on how to live a happy life, and to take opportunities as much as I can because in the end that is all it matters.

I’m 47 and have faced death twice in the last ten years. Ten years ago it was a very serious accident, that left me with a permanent disability with my right leg. With that came chronic pain. Three years ago I had a pulmonary embolism that also tried to take me out. Three blood clots on my lung and one in my leg. Which has left me with some mild lung damage. I could have written this very same TED Talk. I have learnt all the same lessons as Paddy. I live each day with so much love, joy and gratitude. Truth be told, I have never been happier. Despite these life changing events, chronic pain, chronic depression and the severe childhood trauma I experienced. “Get busy living, or get busy dying.” (Shawshank Redemption) Cheers, from Country Victoria. In my experience about 20 years ago with a very close brush with death, it all hit home very hard with regards to who and what really matters to me, family loved ones, etc, but there was also a strong sense of I'm going to meet my maker because doctors weren't going to cure me and I turned to God as my last hope and I put my trust in Christ Jesus. This led on to strengthen my faith on a daily basis and with time I slowly began to recover and began to travel again. Then something that I can also relate to that is similar to Paddy's story is when I visited Poland back in 2004, for me it was also a blessing in disguise because I met the woman who became my wife after time living in Belfast we then relocated to live here in Krakow and I've learned to blend in with the culture, the language, the Polish food and many other aspects of life.

Now that my parents both passed and my sister I am left with 3 sisters and no friends. 2 sisters are over 1500 miles away and 1 is 10 minutes away and needs serious therapy and no one can reason with her. Not even Doctors. It’s so sad. I have a diner 35 years and love all my guests and look forward to each one coming in. But since Covid-19 everything has changed and I am almost broke trying to keep the doors open and losing money daily. I will lose my tiny condo, my car and be homeless. Can you still get jobkeeper? Or any other centerlink payments like the new start allowance? And you should be able to get rent assistance. And pray for your sister and for your situation and others can pray for you too. Through God all things are possible. I will also pray for you and your family. All hope is not lost. So you have no friends at all? No old school friends, no one from church, no one from work, no one from any social gatherings you may attend? Not one person who you talk to at all even just normal chit chat ? You are saying there is not even any aquantinces? Well even if that is so you can remidy that. Anyway God bless and we care about you.

@@montesa9136 I never feared death until recently when I was told I have 5-7.5 months to live. I'm on 7 months and 1 day today. I have got everything in order, but waiting, watching and wondering is not fun! Id be lying if I said I'm still fearless. Leaving my loved ones is my biggest fear.

@@venomx4093 @ICE - For sure if you have people you love & that love you, death would be scary. For me, I'm completely alone, Depressed, Negative, Miserable, & Anxious. I had this show up by chance via auto play. I wasn't attacked but was critically ill to the point doctors told me very plainly that I wasn't going to survive or leave the hospital - this was it for me. I was 30 and there were so many things that I had planned to do and see still ahead of me. I went through so many emotions I didn't know existed or could even occur simultaneously. This broke me. But I had someone in my life who I loved more than words could express and when they came in to see me later that day I told them what I was told but made them a promise - so long as I had a breath in me I would fight and wouldn't give up no matter how difficult it was. I made this promise because the time we had together meant more to me than anything I had ever done and we had been together 10 years and that went by so fast. I soon was unable to speak in a way that made sense but they sat with me and just carried on these conversations and never let on their concerns that I couldn't speak. Soon after I needed major surgery but was so sick they couldn't find a surgeon willing to operate so I was placed on life support and into a medically induced coma. They sat with me and would speak to me knowing that I was not there but did so to give me comfort and said even then I would squeeze their hand. I had doctors try to convince me to be transferred to another hospital because they were still unsure what was wrong. I spent 6 months in intensive care and most of a year in a hospital with months of learning to walk again. I went through chemo, couldn't do anything for myself and this person was there every free moment they had by my side through the absolute worst life could throw. 11 years have past since this and I am still permanently disabled from my fight, have trouble walking, can't get up if I fall but they are still there. Never complaining. They could have walked away but love is what gave me the will to fight. All I wanted was more time together with this person and fought for that love. Had I not had someone in my life that I loved so intensely I wouldn't be here and I now live every day like it's my last because I have been living on borrowed time for over a decade. I spend time with my loved ones, I'm honest with myself and others because I learned that the stresses of life never mattered. It was the little things in life that were truly memorable that were important. It was love that mattered to me as well. And I try every day to be grateful for the day, try not to complain about my difficulties or pains but to accept that they are part of my journey, and tell those I love how much they mean to me and why they mean so much to me. My life is about love and I have honestly never been happier

Thank you, I have terminal cancer and will die soon I am thinking that I do not understand what life means if it does have meaning. Paddy Ney was stuck in the head and nearly killed over the divisions created in peoples minds because they have not found meaning to life. They think they have found meaning in some religious or political movement that puts them in opposition to other people that derive meaning from different isms. What if this is true? People should not be divided because life is a singular movement, therefor the divisions that we are erroneously creating should not exist. So being right or wrong about an issue that should not exist is really meaningless. If everyone understood this conflict would end.
