I lost my vision because of an attempted suicide at the age of 19 in September 2004. This is me talking about my attempt; and the series of events that Led up to it. so we can bring awareness to mental illness. I don’t think it something that’s talked about enough. And I want people to know the repercussions and think about the things they might do before they act on them. Mark my words, mental health awareness saved my life

Mark i just stumbled upon this, and wow, inspirational. I work in the field of mental health and your message to others is real, Why because you have been there, you know how it feels and how close you came. Look up a guy called Mark Pollock, he is also like you and lost his sight, but then believe it or not broken his back when he fell from a window, and is in a wheelchair and blind but has gone onto do amazing things with his life. he is Irish.

And that’s why I love to share my history in my story with others, to let them know it is real and they are not the only ones struggling. I don’t want people to struggle alone. Or at all. And thank you so much for sharing his story and his name. I will be sure to look him up because that also does sound very inspirational and amazing.

Hi Mark, it’s amazing that you’ve been able to overcome this and become stronger. I’m in kind of an opposite situation to you, a disease has attacked my eyes and left me with blurry distorted vision. I was never suicidal but as a result of this illness I now am. How did you manage to accept being blind? Whilst I’m not technically blind, seeing the world in a messed up way has completely destroyed my quality of life and mental health. Any advice or tips you can provide will be greatly appreciated
@markehlert979
@markehlert979 2 года назад
I am so sorry for what you’re dealing with right now because I completely understand. It took me a while to come to grips with an accept my loss of vision. The first couple years I was in complete denial. I still just tried to go about life the same way I used to, but over the years excepted it because the way I was going about things was just perpetually mentally and emotionally damaging me farther making me struggle with daily living, as well as falling into pools, and downstairs etc. I finally linked up with department of rehabilitation and got some caseworkers to help me with mobility and some accessibility things. Been living on my own for a while now. And I would be happy for us to talk and for me to help you with any resources or just someone to confide in. You’re more than welcome to find me on Facebook if you would like so we can chat and not put so much personal things here on RU-vid. But not only working with department of rehabilitation helped, I excepted my mental illness and how much I was struggling with things mentally and emotionally rehabilitating; so I started going to therapy which is help me the most. Having someone to confide in, just being able to talk and feel heard. It helps a lot. I learned so much about myself just being able to be open and honest with a stranger. Therapy is the one thing that is help me grow the most

@markehlert979
@markehlert979 2 года назад
Thanks for your consideration and for watching, but no, it is not an insensitive question. Because yes, I really did struggle with a lot of guilt and self blame. The first couple years of my vision loss I was in complete denial and did not want to accept my blindness because of the guilt that was attached to it. A lot of regret
@francesgold6649
@francesgold6649 2 года назад
@@markehlert979 how did you manage to overcome that? Because I have a similar situation, when I was a teenager I took an acne medication that my doctor told me was extremely safe and my parents also encouraged me to take it, I thought everything would be ok because I was taking blood tests and using a small dose, being followed by my doctor, etc. I was told that the side effects would be manageable and temporary and that it would be safe because of all the safety checks. But I still got a more rare side effect where it permanently damaged my vision and my internal organs/bones very badly. I wasn’t really warned that those side effects could happen and it happened very suddenly. Once it happened my doctor treated me horribly and gaslit me, saying it wasn’t possible and that I was making it up. Many years later I still have vision loss and so many health problems. So while it wasn’t a suicide attempt, I really regret the decision to put trust into my doctor to take this medicine because of the way it harmed me and I really wasn’t properly educated or expecting that to happen. A lot of people lose their vision due to antibiotics, birth control pills, and other medications. If it was for a life threatening condition I think I would have an easier time forgiving myself for it but because it was for acne (which isn’t dangerous) I end up blaming myself a lot. Do you any tips for me to stop blaming myself and feeling guilty? It’s been a few years but I am still struggling, I still feel like everything is my fault and I regret that I took the medication. In hindsight I know the doctor should have properly informed me but I also didn’t do enough research on it because I was so young and naive and my acne really upset me. And I thought it would be fine because everyone else I knew who took it was fine. I struggle with suicidal thoughts because of all the health problems I have.
@markehlert979

@@francesgold6649 and I am so so sorry that this is something that you are struggling with. But I completely understand your frustration and anger. My heart goes out to you. And I am so so sorry you are having suicidal ideaAsians. But I want you to know it’s not something that’s going to help fix or solve your problems. Remember that emotional response due to your frustration which is warranted. but remember it’s the emotional part of your mind and you want to come back to use your rational part and remember that you don’t want to leave. Me and so many people love you and want you to be here. We don’t want you struggling like this. Anytime you’re feeling suicidal, please reach out and come in here and I can help talk you out of it or help give you some resources. I’m happy to help you with anything that I can. I don’t want you to be struggling. Some of the things that help me I’ve learned through therapy is grounding techniques that help me come back to reality to use my rational mind and not emotional. I do things that bring me joy, self-care, as well as speak to someone. But the best thing to learn how to forgive yourself, it’s called cdt. Cognitive distortion therapy. We have to remember that we cannot change the past. Focusing on it will only perpetuate that emotional distress and that thing that we can’t change. we physically can’t change it, and it’s not our fault. Because like you said, you put your trust in the doctors. You were not a medically educated person. You have doctors to help you with these things. Putting your trust in them and they failed so it’s disappointing to you perpetuating this already emotional distress. So again please don’t be blaming yourself. it’s best for us to learn how to focus on the things we can change and can control. That’s when I started rehabilitating myself to know and learn how to function like this because it’s my reality. I put my focus into things that will help me and not further damage me. let me know anything I can do to help, with mental health resources, or resources to help you rehabilitate yourself mentally and emotionally with your loss of vision

Occasionally I’m a little hopeful, but it’s not something I expect. I’ve excepted my vision loss. And especially in cases like mine with people with damaged optic nerves, I really don’t see it probably being some thing reversible in my lifetime.
