Pog is good but I think part of the reason he shines is the lack of quality in the 26-33 yr old gen. The 34+ gen of Froome/Nibali/Thomas/Valverde/Gilbert have shone for so long due to a lack of replacements. Now finally we are getting a new gen.

This is different. Pogacar has proven to be the biggest climbing talent in a long time. And in this tour de France he is competing against people who crashed, had an injury before the tour (van Aert) , or people like Lutsenko, who are great riders but aren't climbing god's. We expected a bit more from Carapaz but he blew himself up trying to follow Pogacar and blowing up 30km from the line in a mountain stage isn't a good idea.

Slightly below record pace on the colombiere, on a good day maybe roglic can keep up. Would love to hear some analysis on how a crash a few days earlier impacts riders abilities to climb. Is it muscular damage sustained during the crash? Psychological?
@jeremystig98
@jeremystig98 3 года назад
Not sure why people are surprised that Pogacar is good in the mountains and TT. He won the mountain classification last year and during the last TT stage of 2020 he also delivered. Pogacar also didnt have a lot of support from his team in 2020, he's always been riding alone at the front, while Roglic had massive team support. Nothing changed. Rogliz is out of the race because his team is hurt from the crash and he cant make it alone.

Because generally it's completely impossible to gain so much muscle to generate the watts to make tt specialists look like complete amateurs on a flat tt, while not gaining more weight that will hurt performance in the mountains.

Would have loved to see how today would have gone if there hadn't been crashes in the early stages, and if the likes of Bernal and Landa (maybe even Remco) were here in form. Yes, Pogacar is dropping the field, but who is he actually dropping that's surprising? Given the race circumstances and all that's happened up to now, who do we expect to be able to compete with him? Before the tour, I (and every bookie) expected Roglic and Pogacar to be a level above the rest just like last year, with their closest rival being Thomas. Thomas looked out of sorts from stage 1, and crashed, and Carapaz was never really expected to be on the Pogacar/Roglic level IMHO, and he's had to work harder than Pogacar over the last few days, especially yesterday. Also have to factor in that Pogacar hasn't crashed (as far as I know). Looking at all of that, his performance isn't that unexpected, even though it is amazing. It's also only stage 8.... I'm having flash backs of the 2018 Giro where Yates dominated everyone for 18 days, and then mega-cracked and lost it all.

2014 was a very good Tour. It depends on what you wanna see: masterclass performances like Pogacar at stage 8 this year or Nibali and Astana at stage 5 in 2014, or do you wanna see stages like in recent years where the terrain aren't used the whole stage and we only see attacks within the last 3km?

And some people are saying that recovery science is better. I really hope Tadej Pogacar did this clean. But yeah, there’s always that sneaking suspicion, and it really stinks because i get excited watching live and i feel like a bit of a dummy afterwards cause there’s always a possibility that they did some chemical trick to get that performance.

Pogacar reminds me of a young Bernard Hinault, back in the early days of Hinault's career when he was precociously talented across every discipline required to be a legendary professional road cyclist. After winning two TDF's in 78 and 79, A knee injury hampered Hinault's 1980 TDF campaign but it's OK.... he won Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Giro and the World Championship instead. If Pogacar has a sense of history he'll try and replicate that, LOL. He certainly has the talent to do it.

Suspecting is the reasonable thing to do, but it could truly be that these are Future Level athletes. I'd like to emphasize that, among Pogacar set of skills, he's got the Cat-like ability not to fall down; something many (GC) riders seem to lack.
