An excellent, and damning perspective. My first knowledge of Wm. Bonney was as an 8 year old (in the 60s), in Las Cruces, NM. Saw a wall mural of him (on a building), in Mesilla. Never believed the "story". I grew up between Las Cruces and Jeff Davis County, TX. Most gringos of that region, fluently speak, read, and write Spanish...and with an accent. Those that don't wouldn't know the difference (especially in the dark). That said, Garrett most likely killed the wrong fellow. He'd have been charged for that, and his character would have definitely suffered. He wanted respectability and success. Both, of which he never attained in his lifetime. It's highly likely that Roberts was indeed, Wm. Bonney. Murder charges never go away, and great efforts are made by those accused, to avoid the consequence of that. "Roberts" would not have been the first to do so...and succeed. My G-grandfather avoided the law on the same charge for almost 20 years. He was a respectable stockman, husband, father, and citizen. He was identified, fled, and turned himself in after 8 months. No one knew where he went, or what he was doing at the time. He was found not guilty of the charges, though...in 1907. Garrett didn't kill Bonney. He didn't strike a "deal" with him either. Garrett, in his zeal to "be someone", killed an innocent man, and covered it up to keep from "swinging". His entire life was "loser". His bullying and mouth got him killed.

Daniel Edwards(alias billy the kid channel) and also Brett Hall, are my absolute favorite youtubers on any subject, not just Billy the kid. Like you said, it's their honesty and integrity that shines out from both of them. Rare to meet people that don't just skip the hard questions or try to twist narratives that supposedly tarnish their various claims. Instead both confront them head on time and again, going down to the smallest details of various events, pictures, details, reports, accounts, archives, etc to show time and again the facts that make the commonly held claims against brushy bill's authenticity are wrong for more than 1 reason each. I believe if the case on his identity as Billy the kid were tried in open court, with these 2 guys as the defense team defending Robert's, or the prosecution team attacking the narrative that the kid died in 1881(depending on which way the case were tried), that any jury in America would conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that the immense circumstantial evidence, when taken as a whole, and with them cross examining anyone clinging to the "historical narrative", proves conclusively enough for any court of law, that Brushy bill and the kid were one and the same person. Case closed (sorry for the run on sentences😂). If they ever teamed up to do a documentary or anything else it would completely change the landscape on this topic. Really amazing researchers, presenters, and fantastic all around journalists/youtubers. All the respect in the world for these two and i wish like hell everyone else on all other contentious historical topics took their approach and their integrity to model after. Could do alot worse.

Realistically, it's more probable that Pat Garrett shot the wrong man again, his third wrong man during the Lincoln County war. This time it was a completely innocent man. He had to hide it, or himself possibly go to jail. I really don't believe it was due to his previous friendship with Billy, although it would be easy to argue that.

Who said they all saw his body? It's been reported that only three people saw his body. People who are saying that everybody and his brother saw the body are just playing Billy the kid's greatest hits. Don't fall for that. Even if some of his friends did see the wrong body, they weren't going to say anything. Why should they? People need to do real research. Then use logic and common Sense. The people who keep playing Billy the kid's greatest hits, hope you're too lazy to do that.

@@KornPop96 try to think about this logically. If all of Billy the kid's friends saw a different body, why would they contradict Pat Garrett? I wouldn't have because I knew that my friend got away. At that point in time if Pat Garrett told me the moon was made out of cheese I would have said "yes boss you are correct". On the other side of the coin, Pat Garrett's friends would have covered for him. Why? Well, let's see. Maybe because he just murdered someone. The kids friends wouldn't say anything about that either. You have to understand one thing which the majority of people don't realize. The kind of people his friends we're. The majority were Mexicans who didn't have much in life. They also despised Pat Garrett. They were smart enough to keep their mouth closed or they just might be next. The only person who said Pat Garrett killed the kid, was Pat Garrett himself. Everyone else went along with him. Even his own deputies disputed that he killed the kid kid. Do the research. Check the facts. There's a lot more information if you just take the time to find it. Or just go with the people who keep playing Billy of the kids greatest hits over and over again. I for one am tired of the moldy oldies. I like the new information coming out. I'll listen to that. In case you or anyone else asks, I could care less if Brushy Bill or anyone else claims to be Billy the Kid.

This is why people just don't understand what really happened that night. Is there anything else I can help you with?

@@KornPop96 RU-vid videos? Really? Dozens of people saw the body? Whose body and who said so? Which jurors inquest are you talking about? The first, the second or the third? One member of the first jury said they all signed the inquest but didn't see a body. Yeah yeah yeah, you're not going to believe that either. one person reported that the body was buried before daylight. If so, why? Why did the territorial legislators have to make a law for Garrett to get paid? Don't give me any nonsense about the governor's refusing. That's just a smokescreen for the people who don't want the legend to die. Why did the law issue arrest warrants for Billy the Kid in 1882 and 1883 if he was dead? The law didn't believe it. I really hope you're not so gullible to believe Pat Garrett"s version of how he killed the kid. Billy the Kid walked into the bedroom in stocking feet. Stocking feet on the ground of Fort Sumner. You do know what the grounds were made of. It was reported the kid had a pistol. It was reported that he didn't have a pistol. The reported pistol wasn't the kind that Billy the Kid preferred. Getting back to the stocking feet that Garrett said. Billy the Kid knew Garrett was in town. Do you really think he would go running around with no boots on if he had to make a running escape?. Of all the times he had to make an escape in the past, how many were with no boots on? If you want to continue to listen to The moldy oldies about Billy the Kid, go ahead. I'll listen to the recent information that's come out. Read Steve Sederwalls book " The Dirty on Billy the Kid". He and other people looked into a lot of Billy the kid's life from an investigation angle. He was a detective who did crime scene investigations. He tells why the story of Billy the Kid being killed that night isn't true. If you don't believe him, don't come whining to me. Tell him. Also, everything you wrote has been debunked. You can believe it or not. That's totally up to you.

At the same time maybe somebody can answer this. Why why why would Pat Garrett make a book knowing that he did not kill Billy the kid? Why would Pat risk his reputation knowing he just wrote a book and that Billy would show up days, months, or years later stating he was still alive? Seems too risky he would make a book and not be afraid that Billy would be recognized somewhere else or news papers stating he was still being seen. I think it is too strange for him to create the book knowingly he might come out still be alive and his reputation would be ruined. Seems too weird in my opinion to make a book and not be afraid that the truth would come out and everybody would reject him as a law man and rep destroyed. Can somebody answer this please.

By the next morning if what Brushy said was true, Garrett knew the Kid had left town and likely knew he was going to Old Mexico as he had talked about. Leaving town and changing names was very common in these times. We call what Garrett wrote a "book" but it was a little pamphlet available by mail order. Garrett didnt have a great reputation to defend. He wasnt sheriff long. Thee only reputation he had came from getting the Kid. We see people lie about all komds of things to this day. People even falsely claim to be a different race to get the benefits. A lot of high profile politicians have been busted doing this. Why do they risk their reputation? Because they want the benefits and dont think they will ever get caught. Also, remember if he shot an innocent man he had to lie or face the consequences. The book was to defend his actions and also try to profit from his new fame.

Billy dies that night of July 14th. If this imposter Roberts, who claimed to be him, then his family members are lying about his claims and their family bible shows he would have been two years old in 1881. Also, all those folks of Ft. Sumner who knew BTK are lying about it being him when they removed his body to the carpenter shop, bathed his body, dressed him, and held his funeral. One big ass secret to keep without anyone saying a single word. None of this crap with Roberts didn’t come about until the mid 20th century. Then I read your book, and your research and evidence you provided in there, convinced me he WAS telling the truth. I do have one question. I don’t doubt some of the facts he knew weren’t known back then, like the account of the Mexican as mentioned in the papers. My question is, if that evidence wasn’t around in his lifetime, where did you manage to find it? I’m reiterating I’m not questioning your claims, your book already convinced me. Sadly it was all there in plain sight all along and no one apparently made the effort to do primary research and go find it. Thats what motivated me in the first place. Everyone was repeating the same talking points but not doing the research. My goal was not to solve it but to get people to look at the facts and think for themselves. In that regard I am very happy about the outcome. Also, to date the critics have still yet to prove their case. It has actually gotten far far weaker. The evidence is all in favor of Brushy Bill and the only thing Garrett has on his side is "because we said so." Thank you for your comment.

More people wanted and needed him dead then those who wanted or needed him alive. Seems to me the kid was thrust into something he didn’t want to be a part of and was just dealt a shit hand and was blamed for more then he did or could handle as a teenager, so it seems to me that had he survived he wouldn’t want to be found out and more then anything wanted to evaporate into the ether so if anyone thinks he couldn’t have kept his being alive a secret I would disagree. So it’s more then possible he survived but did he we will never truly know,I hope he did. He was a kid for crying out loud and they made him out to be a monster in a very small amount of time which begs the question why did they want him dead so much? No one needed him alive as much as they needed him dead.

On the argument that if Billy wasn't killed by Pat, then why didn't he keep popping up. Well, at the time, there were a lot of outlaws going by the name Billy the Kid. So when newspapers heard new stories or sightings of Billy the Kid they just assumed they were fake or a different outlaw going by Billy the Kid so they never ran the story.

Well from the locals perspective, their lack of belief that the kid was not shot is easy. Most of us know our mother and even if you don't we all have one. So we have to have family somewhere who might start wondering what happened to us when the communication stops abruptly. If the murdered suspect was Billy Barlow someone knew Billy Barlow and I dont know if they were friendly or foe. A person named Billy Barlow just one day just fell off the face of the planet. There was a body and it was reported Pat Garrett murdered someone at the Maxwells place. The locals I would bet knew Billy Barlow also and would come to the conclusion when he no longer came around something happened to him. That just might lead people to speculate that the body just might not be the kid. What is the key to a good magic trick, misdirection. Things that make you Hummmmm.

I was listening to another pod cast about this event and it seams Billy Barlow was the same thing we use to this day when we dont know who someone is we use John Doe. It just means we don't know. So they don't know who was killed in Billy's place that night. That tells me why there has been no research done on the man who was killed and passed off as Billy. You would have to be a insider to get inside info and judging from the way things work even today be careful I don't think that part of the story is to come to light. It reminds me of the Kenndy killing in Dallas the truth will not set you free it will get you killed. Some details must never come to light. The rabit hole is deeper than you think.

If brushy bills DNA matches the hair at the museum who could say anything against it because what are the chances , i would say that would be solid evidence whether the hair has provinance or not , because if they match they both came from different sources so there would be mo denying it

I absolutely love all the neigh sayers that point to various supposed facts that don't even belong together to a day 1 investgator. Like how Roberts was supposedly entirely illiterate they say, and yet in the same breath they say he got his extremely detailed, seemingly insider info by reading all the readily available source material from all the survivors and eyewitnesses to the various incidents. Like it was all a google search away in 1949 for an illiterate guy to suddenly collect from all over new mexico, etc, while not leaving hico, tx. Which is it, was he illiterate or secretly literate with access to materials that at that time and day he would have had to travel all over the place to obtain as there was no cetralized collection. And who compiled and read it all to our illiterate hero? There are many other things like this that poke holes in our non believers theories with only the application of common since, yet they continue to push these narratives. Did he get every bit of it from the radio? Or the non existent tv documentaries on Billy the kid that never aired in the 1940's? Always want to ask them this when they state these claims, yet i don't bc the answer is obvious to these things. Love, love, love your work btw Daniel; please keep it up for as long as you are willing. Cheers🍻
