As of 2018, glider kit trucks which are massed produced, or produced by a dealership in quantity, will be coming to an end.
The government in the US and Canada are both clamping down on this practice, as it seems they have found a loop hole in the emissions standards, which they will be putting an end to promptly.
Between 2018-2021, farmers, owner operators can make/have glider kits, but even this practice on a small scale will come to an end, as of 2021.
It's a sad thing now to know that the mechanical WORKING engines will be coming to an end, very, very soon.
It's also a bit scary to know that the new DEF engines are what fleets and owner operators will need to rely on. Hopefully the reliability of the newer trucks will improve SOON!!!

Keith Starr not profitable for the Chinese. We really let the industry and future drivers down. I drive an old pre emission with a Detroit 60, when they outlaw it I'm done.

California code says you HAVE to buy a new engine every 8 years or so, cost to refurb a bif rig, would definatly be over $60,000

Once again, you said it all: "And they're not particularly concerned whether it works in the real world or not." As long as we have people making laws that have never been a truck driver, this will continue to be a comment heard in the in the industry. Some of the best truck bosses I've ever had started out in a truck themselves. It's the guys that have never driven a commercial vehicle, let alone been inside one that create the most headaches.

I remember specing a 2010 Mack with an 09 motor just to shy away from the urea mandate of 2010. That MP8 was a great motor!

I keep old tractors in use over haul the drive lines can be rebuilt many times they cannot ban them because they are all old trucks .

What is your fuel milage? The Mercedes Actros(Cab over Semi) which runs here in Germany gets about 8 miles to the Gallon (30 liters per 100 Kilometers)! They are reliable trucks with low emissions. The technology is there. It just needs to be used.

I picked up my new glider from Fitzgerald Wednesday and ordered a 2018. I showed them this video and they don't know anything about this. That's strange.

@Quantum Rey ,, long live Detroit power ,, I hope to god the EPA never bans OLD trucks cause i drive a DINOSAUR built in the 1970s my hauling truck is a 1977 peterbilt 359 custom ,it's a stretched lifted monster that has 3 drive axles + powered steer axle ,built as a military transport truck it never saw service , but was used to haul heavy equipment in the texas oil fields ,,I bought it in south dakota in 2003 ,and drove it home to iowa ,, takes a special talent to drive it cause it has a 24 speed trans with a 3 speed final ,,if i engage the front axle and hit the power dividers and lockers on all 3 rears it's true 14 wheel drive ,,even 12 inches of snow won't stop me ,i routinely plow snow for the county in the winter and use a 14ft plow which is bigger than the ones on the dump trucks it's powered by one of the largest engines ever installed in a class 8 highway truck ,12V92 twin turbo ,air-water aftercooled , 2 stroke detroit ,,setting right at 850 wheel horsepower and 2050 pound feet of torque at 1500 rpm

About to pick up a 2014 389 c15 glider. Never going to sell it now. Nice flat top sleeper. I'll post a video of it once I pick it up

I just got out of two different 2019 internationals both pulled 8.2 mpgs. And no issues. Pulled hard ran great with good mileage. Average load was 40,000 lbs.

Cutting down emissions is a good thing. My euro 5 scania has never let me down . One of the most reliable makes of trucks here in the UK. And it complies to some of the most strict emission laws over here ..

The way I see it is that truckers have to figure out a way to get profit as a percentage over the actual cost of running a truck. I had a Mack and I asked about twenty five guys at truck stops how much it cost to run a mile and not one guy could tell me. Until you solve that everything is academic. After seven years I owed the bank the same as when I bought my truck so I quit. I still love trucks and I worked on several glider trucks as an apprentice at White trucks so I know they are not the problem. The problem is accountants who figure someone will take a load no matter what price is offered and are proved right by those who never take the time to figure out a profit. You can't keep on trucking for the love of it.

I have a Fleet of 16 T600's from 1985 to 1990. All still running the road today. Yes they have all been Rebuilt/Restored and Maintained on a Schedule. My Driver's get comments all the time on the trucks. Three of my 1985's have surpassed the 3 Million miles mark and still running Strong. I have a Spare engine for each Truck standing by. All powered by 3406B Cats.

Dave I agree, it's been speculated for some time now that the pre emission glider niche was coming to an end. It was pretty clear to me anyway that when the Fitzgerald family for example started to purchase Paccar dealerships in the region, and begin to set themselves up for the future - that the glider business was going away in the somewhat near future. And yes - it is a sad fact.

I live in the past with my C model mechanical. My truck is a 93 and has been in the family for 21 years. I have taken care of it over the years and more or less restored it from the ground up with more emphasis on safety and reliability more than aesthetics. Don't get me wrong, most everyone is shocked when I tell them the year model. No truck will get good fuel mileage doing what I do and reliability is a must because the lives of my passengers (of the bovine persuasion ) stand in the balance-especially during extremes of weather. I bought it when I was 28 and if I can keep it up for another 10-12 years..... When it is done so am I . And not before because of some government mandate. You might be shocked at how long you can get around things if you are safe, use your head, and keep a relatively low profile- at least with a farm truck.

EPA is always a pain... But that said. I drove a 2012 International Pro Star with a MaxForce engine. No DEF at the time. But I never had any DPF issues with it. Ran super singles. Actually a pretty nice truck. And that engine was great.. compared to the Cummins we had in the 09' models . Peak torque at 900rpm. Was awesome..

This is a serious problem! And dealership service depts will not clean out the EGR system! They want to just component replace whatever is wrong. They need a fuel injector in the egr flow to keep it open.

I'm from out of U.S but trust me we can see down here the effects of all that... let me explain: we are importing all those new shity trucks(cascadia,prosleeper,t800,volvos) to our countries and we are having too much trouble with those engines we don't have many regulations here about pollution so we take off all the sistem and reprogram the ecu to work properly Besides that it's too expensive and all those ISX,DD13,DD15 and volvos are junk... We are buying more debt because those trucks are not as good as the older ones(Cummins N14,Detroit 60 series and CAT 3406Bs or 3406 e's or even C15 single turbo)... I have a 1999 Kenworth T 2000 with a 3406E in it and I love it... more than 1 million miles and still going strong... I hope u truckers find a solution because we are one in this world and if something affects this industry in your country it will do the same all over the world... Bless 10-4 Drive safe

Oops forgot to add the engine. It was the Cummins x15 backed by a ten speed auto trans and the second one had the twelve speed auto Trans. Both ran identical fuel mileage.

I have a 2018 Peterbilt 389 with the new X15. Depending on the load I get anywhere between 6mpgs to 10mpgs. Also depends on the trailer I pull.

I'll have to agree about them breaking down more often and being more expensive to repair, however I have first hand experience with vastly improved fuel economy. The Freightliner Cascadia with the autoshift transmission can get 10-11 mpg under some situations.

As a mechanic who fought through the '80s auto emissions there may be a light at the end of the tunnel. From '76 on, the emissions regulation changes were an annual occurrence for the manufacturers to deal with. By the mid '80s with full computer controlled engines thing began to improve. In the early '90s DEDEC, CELECT and the CAT 3406 E were showing promise. Unfortunately the EPA has gone nuts again with the previous administration and things are going down hill. The heavy truck industry is now fighting with the almost annual change of regulations. Once the changes slow down or are announced ahead of time the engine manufacturers will have a chance.-

very true, as a mechanic in the late 70's up to the late 90's , automotive gasoline fuel systems went thru a amasing transformation,, Carb engines just would not meet emissions if not kept proplerly tuned,, which most owners didn't keep up with. With all the electronic fuel management systems ,, light come on and the owner has to go to the shop, Any engine when properly adjusted will past all emmisions with flying colors !!

One of the changes that was forced by the addition of a catalytic converter in the 70's- 80's was that the zinc in the motor oil was destroying the catalytic converters, but if you take the zinc out of the oil your flat tappet cam would fail, the solution made use of roller cams much more prevalent. Then there were guys who just modified their catalytic converters with a broomstick, and this is a fairly rare thing to do anymore because the technology has come a long way, you could not go down to the Dodge dealer in 1970 and buy a 700+ hp car AND have them warrantee it and get more than 20 mpg. I have been running the same basic route for over 7 years now, the first truck I had to work with was powered by a 60 series Detroit and when loaded to 50,000 pounds gross got 6.2 mpg. The next truck was the Volvo D13 and it got 7.4 loaded the same and on the same roads - it did have injector issues that caused one DPF failure in 900k miles The current rig has 500k miles on it and the DD15 is getting 8.3 MPG and has been trouble free, although I do notice that in summer we get better fuel mileage (8.8). All 3 trucks had a strait 10 trans, not sure what rear ends the 60 series had; but, the D13 had 3.33's and the DD15 has 3.25's, and all of them governed at 65 mph

I used to deliver truck parts for a living. Two things I saw was this... The new EPA mandated engines were blowing turbos, and a few other things. The second thing was, there was a fleet shop I delivered to that routinely bought older trucks and rebuilt them. It was cheaper than new and they got around EPA regs... I don't know if they are still doing it now, though...

The main problem is nox emissions from Diesel engines, due to the high efficiency of Diesel engines they have high nox levels. When oxygen is burned hot it creates nox emissions so def is injected into the exhaust or exhaust gas recirculating is injected into the engine to either convert or dilute it. The def systems seem to be the better option than exhaust gas recirculating because the exhaust gas dilutes the oxygen in the cylinders causing a incomplete burn which causes soot that clogs up the dpf filter so it all around sucks, the international we just got is almost undriveable due to the emissions and the dealer says it’s normal.

Contracts are adding "Ten Year Rules" for equipment. Banks and Insurers won't cover Gliders hardly at all.

How many Greenhouse gases are released when one of those new emission engines screws up during re-gen and burns the truck to the ground? With North American Free Trade can Mexican trucks do gliders and run their trucks into the US and Canada?

when the original NAFTA was signed by bush 43 they had planned on building an 8 lane super highway from the border up to KC,MO. Mexican trucks would be exempt to US trucking laws, licensing laws, insurance laws, weight laws, safety inspections, emissions, etc.. Mexico was to build a gigantic port just south of the border to circumvent union labor, as long as the trucks stayed with in 1/2 mile of the NAFTA highway, good to go. BTW, what the hell is in KC,MO? TRAINS, lots of trains. back then who was buying lots of trains? warren buffet, the same guy lobbying Washington for the NAFTA highway. nothing and I mean nothing happens by aw shucks and by golly. every little minute thing is planned and acted upon behind the curtain.

And why did St. Helens blow up? Was it caused by increased heat by global warming? Scientist have realized they were partly wrong about sea-levels rising. They're actually dropping the ocean floors. The magma is speeding up the cracking of fault lines. Want greenhouse gases, watch what happens with Yosemite blows.

The problem wasn't that the law created a greater cost. It was the cost only hit those buying new trucks, and it allowed a loophole with gliders. So those with new trucks couldn't raise their prices to cover the new expenses. Plus companies trying to past the new cost of the trucks onto the drivers by paying them the same on a more expensive, less productive platform

"Hi, I'm from the Government and I'm here to help you!" can be very scary words indeed. Like a poster said. Govt. is like salt, a little goes a long ways. I'm not against having a Govt. or the EPA etc. It's the fact that common sense seemed to go extinct about 1975 in the United States that has me worried, and don't think you are alone in the Trucking industry. The FRA is shoving PTC down our throat in the Railroad industry. 12 mores years and I can pull the pin; if I live that long... keep it on the road/rails brothers. Cheers!

Is the EPA including freight trains and large freight vessels in their regs? No. One freight train is the equivalent of 100 pre- emission trucker in their “air pollution” chart. Why they don’t look at putting DEF and DPF in those?

Actually US locomotives must meet the same specs as trucks, but the railroad companies told EMD and GE the two major locomotive manufacturers they would not buy a locomotive that required the use of def. GE first came out with the evolution series engines that exceed all EPA specs for 2017 without the use of any after engine exhaust treatment then EMD figured out how to do it but designed a new 4 stroke Diesel engine of 1010 cubic inches per cylinder that also exceeds all EPA emissions requirements. Neither engine uses more fuel than their predecessors and their reliability is excellent. The latest locomotive's are rated at 4500 horsepower with a 12 cylinder engine both using free gas turbochargers, 4 of them on the EMD engine and 1 turbocharger on the GE locomotive's. I'm a retired locomotive engineer and keep track of what's happening in the locomotive field.

George Cabrera Actually freight railroads are included in emissions mandates too. They're done slightly different tho. Locomotive manufacturers have to depending on year have to meet new emissions requirements tat started back in 2012 and went in 4 levels with the most stringent being tier 4 mandated in January 2016 I think. Some new locomotives even require DEF.

We got 45 new 2018 Cascadias and they go out under thier own power and and come back in with an old Peterbilt wrecker dragging them.... They meet the GHG 2018 standards and are almost zero emmision but they aren't reliable at all.

After a long career of driving all different sorts of fleet trucks, the 2008 Cascadia with the the DD series engine was the most reliable 18 I’d ever been in.. 740,000 miles when I turned it in, regular service, and it never left me sitting. In fact, I never had so much as a flat tire. MPG? 6+ hauling paint, with heavy back hauls. MT maybe 10-15%... I hate to disagree with ya’ll about this, but I’ll take modern efficiency and reliability any day over what I was driving back in the 70s, 80s and 90s.. I do not miss seeing the black smoke pouring outta the one stacks, thanks for your time.. one happy retired trucker..

Lot of guys in Australia, especially in the outback, use older trucks (old 3408-powered Kenworths and E9 Mack Superliners) for that exact reason, and there is a small but growing group of "privateers" restoring and rebuilding older trucks for work. Emissions has been a disaster, the number of new Kenworths and Volvos I have seen on the side of the highway with bonnet/cab tilted and a look of exasperation on the face of the driver pacing around while he waits for a call-out to arrive.

@@SmartTrucking Mate, have you seen the wiring looms/brake line bundles going along the chassis rails on the Euro 6 Volvo FHs? It's unreal! Blow a compressed air line and you have to pull the whole loom/bundle apart down a metre length bending your forearms somewhere out of sight at an impossible angle around the central AdBlue tank just to find it. Christ, I hope they can find a simpler way to do emissions because, at the moment, the engineering method (misnomer) seems to be to add another level of complexity to an already complicated beast of a drivetrain, then add some fandangled cut-out to prevent you tipping water into the AdBlue tank or disconnecting the EGR pipe, probably as some kind of patronising punitive measure. Guys I know of get through AdBlue exhaust sensors just about as fast as they get through engine oil changes. Our company has new concrete mixer trucks, the one was in the shop 3 times this season for check engine light on, and our shop can’t touch them until they are off warranty. It had to go to the main dealer for warranty work, which is 45 mins from our plant.

i drive for a construction company. we have a fleet of dump trucks, one of them being a newer cat brand dump truck. i cant tell you how many times that thing has been in the shop for DEF problems...... when it is on the road, the driver calls the shop complaining that the truck is doing a burn even though it just did one less then 1/2 an hour ago. this is a fairly new truck still under warranty that i am sure my company is paying allot of money for. sadly it's a piece of crap that's always broke, sadly the 2007 sterling with its Mercedes benz diesel that no one seems to like (across the industry the Mercedes doesn't get much love) runs no problem at all. im sure its been paid off for quite a while now, and just makes its owner money at this point. the more i see of DEF, its garbage

Idle time kills the DPF Aftertreatment Systems, if you are going to idle the truck make sure the cruise control on/off switch is in the off position so the ECM can regulate the engine speed during your idle time. The engine will not Regen Passively if the cruise control is in the On position as the ECM deems that as PTO mode and will not vary Engine Speed therefore will build soot deposits in the DPF and as soon as you hit the road it will do a Regen. There's a lot to the DPF Systems and unfortunately it's all faulty so good luck...

You mean DPF problems not DEF. Two separate system. Diesel exhaust fluid is used in SCR selective catalytic reduction System to reduce NOx emissions. Diesel Particulate Filters capture particulate matter pollution and go through regens which use extra fuel, and yeah DPFs are killed by idling for long periods.

Daimler Trucks is spending millions developing new electric and hydrogen technologies. It is amazing to see some of the project ideas being developed in germany. Gliders will always be built. If a customer wants one, freightliner will sell them one. I retired from manufacturing plant in nc. You are right about the epa emissions problems though. Every couple of years the epa rolls out brand new limits on emissions. But many of the gliders that we produced were to replace wrecked trucks. Like I said, if a customer has the money, freightliner will oblige.

All reality is that you take your worn out truck that’s possibly on the edge of killing someone if something fails. The engine you would still be running if you didn’t do a glider will be in a brand new chassis and been rebuilt would be cleaner/safer on the road

There is so much that went into the smog issue though. Your talking leaded gasoline. Mainly carbeurated engines and very very poor fuel economy. All of these things have been addressed with modern engines most of which would have happened with normal technology progression anyway. And I still find it very hard to believe that reducing mileage to a 1/3 or a 1/4 of the old numbers just to achieve a clean idle is actually helping anything. Diesel technology is far superior to gasoline in regards to work done per gallon of fuel emissions included. Europe has learned that years ago. their average diesel car nets 40 plus mpg yet the US looks at diesel like the black plague. The problem is the mandates are far beyond what the technology of today or even the next 5-10 years is remotely capable of. And the push for electrification is even more detrimental. You still have to produce power and I'm sorry wind turbines, solar panels, and hydro power are not plentiful enough to power it all. We already have power issues in areas of the US and they want to add millions of electric cars to the mix. They are way over reaching right now. It is very easy to topple an entire economy this way. Its all good in theory but as we are seeing it is very poorly executed.

Chris Clayton Europe fucked up on diesels. Great for fuel economy and CO2 emissions and the vehicle taxes were set up to support that, Europe had much tighter fuel economy requirements but lower other air pollution requirements compared to the US so it was easier for manufacturers to get big mileage and they were incentivised to make small efficient diesels, so everyone went and bought one. Now it’s realised the particulate and NOx pollution from diesels is worse and more impactful than first thought, and air pollution in many European cities is worse than American ones. Only people that should have bought diesels were people doing large miles a year where the fuel efficiency benefit of diesels is a positive and they’re likely on highways away from cities so the air pollution is less of a problem. Everyone else should’ve stuck to petrol, which would’ve meant more CO2 but less harmful health impacts directly.

You should look into the Euro cities that are actually banning diesel engines because even with the DEF systems they pollute to much. Fact of the matter is as long as we rely on ICEs we will have pollution problems. As a gear head I hate to say it but we need to switch to electric powered vehicles ASAP and save gasoline for classic cars.

Although I am not in the Trucking Industry.It appears the EPA is not interested in making things better for the people that are. The Glider concept is genius. The industry is very important for the economy. The government does not need to make it more difficult.‼️

With automobiles 200,000 miles is the new 100,000, and it is no longer unusual to see cars out there with 300,000 miles. When working on a vehicle with a turbocharger and four overhead cams I do at times long for my Studebaker flathead six. Cars that weigh twice as much as cars from the 70's get better fuel mileage. When, not if the engineers get it right it will result in cleaner burning, longer lasting, more economical trucks. Most of the posters here are too young to remember smog alerts that would last a week when persons with respiratory problems couldn't go outside. For most of the summer on the East Coast in DC you couldn't see the sun through the haze. If you wish to see what unregulated smog looks like check out some of the videos on china, with everyone wearing face masks. Do you want that for your kids and grandparents? Taking trucks back for warranty work is not what manufacturers or dealers want. It doesn't make them money. As the poster of this video states our best hope is that the engineers get it right sooner.

One trucking company near where I live jerked all the emission equipment and turned the screws Had 350 2 valve engines that would run with a stock 500, when it was said and done the smog Guys hit them and they had to replace and enable the pollution control devices, almost put them out of business, the sky is not the limit anymore we all breathe the same air. I have a feeling some of these pickup truck owners are going to feel the pinch before too long( the days of coaling Priuses may soon be over .)

The company I work for purchases new trucks every year, and we have seen the fuel mileage improving. I am currently driving a 2017 Freightliner that is averaging 7.7 since it hit the road new. The downside is the computer operation of the motor.with only 13,000 miles, fuel mileage and performance went down fast. All five motor operations computers had to be blanked out and reprogrammed. And the computers, with even a false sensor reading, can shutdown the motor with little warning. At that point it is a tow into a shop with computer diagnostics. Once they get the bugs out it will probably be great. But how many years is that going to be. It is not fun or productive being "dead in the water" on the shoulder of a busy highway.

auto tech of 30+ years, a lot of my diagnosis involves failure management strategy, either using default values as replacements or warning light illumination when "emissions exceed 1.5X values". limp mode drastically reduces MPG. both sides, EPA and owner / operators demand reduced fuel consumption, EPA, less in = less out emissions, O/O lower operating costs per mile. i have issue with the video stating the fuel efficiency of newer models being less then older engines, this is a lie. there is NO way engineers are not using every fuel saving strategy at their disposal, for multiple reasons. "Current Federal regulations require heavy-duty trucks to achieve a 10- to 20-percent increase in fuel efficiency by 2018." and " regulators to draft new rules mandating additional improvements between 2019 and 2025--matching the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) rules for passenger cars, which also run through 2025." CAFE is a financial incentive (penalty) on top of the obvious selling points to buyers of posted MPG estimates. what i believe Smart - Trucking is saying is fuel economy drops to below older trucks only when failures occur. more systems = more possible failures. BUT it is the owners responsibility to maintain the truck in "as designed" condition. an older truck in proper form will get better MPG then a poorly running newer model, BUT the newer model will manage a failure BETTER then the older one, with less driveability impact. the other factor may be real world Vs. laboratory conditions, an example being manually shifting when a computer controlled map would provide better MPG. traffic won't allow that. finally, @ Kyle Ranger, took me all of 2 minutes to check facts, 7 to 9 MPG is pretty average! a 2015 Daimler getting 12.2 is "more then twice as fuel efficient" as current production. The company was one of three truck manufacturers awarded grants as part of the SuperTruck program. Another vehicle built by Cummins and Peterbilt achieved 9.9 mpg under similar testing conditions.

A lot of truckers coming to my workplace always complained about the reliability of Freightliner trucks with their emissions controls. Some said they had no engine power and I think there was a problem with heat, but I don't recall what that was...

It will be the same as back in the 70's. Our gas burning autos, always had issues. The last 20+ Years not many issues with those. But the first 15 years was murder on 90% of the ones I was around. I feel the newer diesel engines, will be the same. They had went through the growing pains. Let the owners be the ones that were hurt over the issues. Now they will get it worked out. Just in time to see Diesel fall to the side as our major use. But I will not get rid of my 1995 T600 with the series 60 detroit.

Hey Dave i thought i just read in one of my Overdrive or Truckers news emails that Trump's person over the EPA just put the halt or sent up a bill to put a halt on phase 2 and Fitzgerald and all other Glider builders are pretty darn happy right now! From how the article read its pretty much a done deal. That'll be a huge victory for the trucking industry 👍👍👍👍

The very simple way to meet and exceed the EPA Emissions specs is to add a propane boost system to the old Pre 2007 engines that are used in Glider Kits. It costs less than $5,000 including expert labour to add LPG boost but the fuel mileage increase is at least 15 to 25 percent and the same amount of horsepower increase. Obviously over a couple of years, the fuel savings alone will more than offset the cost of a propane boost system. The reason propane works as an accelerant in the combustion chamber is because it contains oxygen molecules and LPG is 37 percent hydrogen by weight. I know two truckers have used this for years on 375 and 400 HP engines and one got a 28 percent boost in MPG and the other got a 31 percent boost, both rated 80,000 pounds and both were long distance truckers. Engine oil also stayed cleaner longer and there is no carbon or varnish build up in any part of the engine.

Hows this one for you guys. Emergency vehicles aren't even exempt from the emissions problems. I have three customers that are D.C. firefighters that said they have had to pull over and wait on the side of the road on the way to a working fire because the truck had to do its cleaning cycle and they lost 15 mins on the way to the fire. Well it will be like this untill someones house from the EPA burns down with their kids in it and the truck responding has to pull over until they see this is a problem.

tell your firefighters to have the ecm reprogrammed, they are not exempt from the emissions but they are exempt to the shutdown mandate, same as diesel ambulances. they should be able to do a regen while at site while pumping water. BTW, you cannot do a regen in 15minutes.

No problem with clean air diesels. They are million mile motors with routine service. They need to be made affordable for little guys to stay in business. Get rid of plastic, cheap wiring, and add component commonality between manufacturers.

The only thing the government should do is mandate better fuel. Because with better fuel engines don't have to struggle to get the power down, so they can get better fuel mileage. The only thing is you have to make the common rail fuel systems more advanced (like they're in Europe).

The EPA makes the rules to help the big industry under the banner of eco friendly. You have to keep buying parts and gives the dealer a ton of work. My father in law manages the family trucking company and the new trucks are always having emission problems. It forces you to buy new trucks that remain in warranty because you can't afford to fix them.

I have been around glider kits for nearly 40 years and in 2004 out of 10 trucks 4 were emission motor trucks, that coupled with $4.87 per gallon fuel those 4 trucks nearly broke our company. 6 non emission trucks with nearly a million miles each trying to make up for the other 4. KW came to me and asked about more new trucks and I said only if they were gliders. They got nasty at the thought about me building gliders, I finally told them the market not the Gov will decide what works and what doesn't. At 60 years old and 40 years experience I will stick to what I believe. Fleet don't have a lot choices because of the vast number of trucks they rotate but small fleets and 0/0 will not be led to the slaughter house like we were in 2004.A not so secret secret Shnieder builds about 1000 gliders per year with non emission Series 60 Detroits in them. Captive No More!!!!

Prior to the latest glider craze a company in Lou Ky was starting a primarily day cab refurb program where for about $55,000 you could get a rebuilt drive train, all new wiring, paint,tires and rims ect. This will probably get popular again but its limited because its slow and mostly day cabs. Im actually rebuilding a 98 379 as we speak and ive got thousands of hours in already. Its a tough time looking forward on a large scale but im semi retired and it doesn't effect me like it use to. That being said I still worry about the young people coming behind us. Again Dave Thanks

20 years ago you never saw a truck broke down on the side of the road, nowadays 2 year old trucks are being towed for a $20 sensor that you have to hook the truck up to a computer to find. So it turns into a $500 tow bill or more, $140 hr labor rate and a 200% mark up on parts. I'm good, I'll stick with my 96 freightshaker!

I do think that truck emissions system will continue to improve to a point of equivalent mileage and reliability to pre emissions engines. The technology is pretty young but as with any new tech it really can't help but get better over time.

Facts are need to show politicians that older engines are more reliable than new ones, but if possible show the difference in polution between a glider truck and a new truck. I saw that Fitzgerald made some test but I don't know for sure if they realease their results or not.
