I live in Rwanda. Gifted Helldivers 2 to a friend here on Steam. He had hundreds of hours on it. Loves the game, and is PISSED. Essentially the game becomes a digital paperweight soon for him. He won't be playing if Sony sticks to their guns. Currently trying to get a refund. He's told me total number of concurrent online players has taken a huge hit. I can understand why.

Sony loves blocking people from playing and not letting people play together, I remember it took almost a whole year for Sony to finally allow PS players to play with Xbox and pc players on borderlands 3.

This reminds me when Overwatch 2 came out and for a bit they required everyone to not only have a Battle Net account but also verify a phone number for all console players too

Setting the expectation at launch is the biggest problem here then retroactively going back. There are practical ones too like playstation not available in some regions of the world, making the game they bought unplayable now which is a big deal. Genuine concerns as well. Sony has been hacked and had customer data leaked in huge swaths like a dozen actual times in the last 10 years! People are waking up to how valuable their data is and how little its protected and cared about by companies. Sony just want to brag to shareholders how their account # has grown and introduce potential customers to the Sony ecosystem. Nobody running these companies are actual gamers. They are so disconnected from what their customer base is and wants.

Im sorry , im sick andbtired of all this corporate bullcrap with having mebforced to use a third party account connection to play something i bought on a platform i choose to play on. I choose Steam because its my platform of choice not PS5. Not only that but for 3months! The need for any connectivity was waived. So whats the problem. Just keep it the way it is. Arrowhead probably said what they said in the steam page because they’re forced to. Sony makes them implement a PlayStation account but arrowhead can’t just just say what they truly think otherwise it probably won’t go down well, so they’re forced to cover Sony.

Not only this but the fact that they decided since people were saying that “ThE pLaNeTs ArE sO bArReN” They DOUBLED the amount of Patrols on each planet. Basically saying SCREW YOU SOLO PLAYERS!

Things they could have done: Give a free cape or armour set or someth when you connect your account to steam. Leave it as optional, but remove crossplay function without logging into PSN. Make PSN accounts available in as many regions as possible. Make players have to create a unique name ingame rather than just using their steam username, and store it on Arrowhead's end, then they can ban people easier, instead of making everyone have to make a PSN account (which requires a unique username) and use that in the game. Don't sell the game to people in regions PSN accounts are unavailable. They basically said 'Yo basically we don't care about any of you or whatever just give us your details if you don't you can never play the game again.'

I had already tapped out of Helldivers when I realized it had Kernel-level anticheat. That's an automatic no from me. But now seeing that Sony wants to force people to make accounts? Talk about doubling down a hard pass.

They didn't give up, they're now restricting sales in countries that don't have PSN. Seems to me they just don't want to have players that are in restricted PSN areas play their games anymore.

If you’re super concerned about security, you can just make a new account with a new email and a fake name. That doesn’t really help people in the regions where you can’t make a PlayStation account though.

People blaming Arrowhead for Helldivers 2’s downfall are the same people blaming 343i for Infinite’s downfall. The developers aren’t at fault, it’s the corporations. Sony and Microsoft, respectively. EDIT: Gotta love all these tone deaf responses I’m getting in the comments.

They charge you $80 a year to play online which you’re already paying for plus the games on the store are $70 they have been known to have data breaches plus you get banned for sending emojis and you lose all access to your games you bought digitally I think we should all sue Sony…

I think I might be missing something but I had to log into my Sony account when I bought the game on steam about a month ago. Apparently that was optional? I'm really struggling to see what the big deal is here. There's so many games that do this sort of thing I'm not sure what makes this any different. It's a little inconvenient, sure, but the game is good enough to justify 3min of my time. The Sony security breaches were news to me, that's somewhat concerning. But overall I kinda feel like this is getting blown out of proportion. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, it's possible I'm ignorant to the bigger picture.

If Sony & the devs region locked the game, this news wouldn't be such as massive crash and burn.

that makes me so sad. even for those who make or have an account, the game loses so much of their playerbase. so many lobbies to jump into and people that join you randomly. for the last two days i havent had aaaanybody randomly join my missions. and now i know why.

I was reluctant to get on the band waggon, BECAUSE of the steam store saying "requires a third party account linking (or whatever)" but my friend literally shared his screen on discord, and showed me a video how you can skip it. I then bought the game with the understanding that the account linking was optional. Then proceeded to play till level 65, and bought 3 copies. With this rollout, imma be locked from the game, because I originally switched from ps4 to pc because of the security breaches. Not getting into that shit again.

I feel most likely case for this is that Sony reverts the decision "on paper" so you don't need to link it if you don't want to but then structures it in a way that people who DON'T link their account get screwed over to some degree or another

See. My only issue with this is. Every PC gamer has like 100 accounts already. Between steam, epic, ubisoft, battle net. Outside of place that dont have psn. I dont see what the issue is. Tbf i have a ps5 thou. And signed into my sony account the moment i started the game.

Almost everything about this is silly. First, there wouldn't be any backlash if the game required a PSN account at release. Secondly, you can create a dummy email account & use that for the PSN account.

So, you realise we've needed an Xbox/MS account to play Halo on PC since MCC right? It literally prompts you to sign in to your MS account when you boot the game for the first time. How is this such a big deal? This sounds like such massive hypocrisy coming from a Halo fan who plays the PC version.

This is so overblown and it’s a huge reach for Xbox players to say that this is the death of this game.

It's insane to me that people love a game enough to rage about it online, make videos etc., but not enough to make a simple Playstation account in 5 minutes to keep playing the game they love. Should this be a thing Sony is requiring? Absolutely not, I get it, it's dumb and predatory. But I swear PC players are so weirdly entitled to Steam AND ONLY Steam and act like they're losing a limb if they have to even think about making an account on any other platform.

I'm just speechless. I couldn't even think Sony would be able to mess things up so much. Like, wow I'm literally shocked.

The thing about business decisions is that the company is obviously trying to make as much money as possible. However, with every decision, it has good and bad effects. The problem with modern game companies is that they’re so out of touch with the community, they’re incapable of predicting what a certain decision will do to their company. In this case, their money pig is no more. This game absolutely printed money when it came out and they just ruined that.

Just recently looked at the store page of Starship Troopers: Extermination. There's a bunch of recent reviews poking fun at HD2's misfortune. My favorite one calling on the former Helldivers to enlist with the U.C.F and "fight for your true earth."

The funny thing is that this and other decisions like it aren’t even about profits. It’s about the insane and utterly absurd rules that the stock market follows. If the company is more successful than they predicted then somehow that means, according to the stock market, they don’t understand their own company, and the stock price drops. All that matters to the shareholders is the APPEARANCE of success and what will make the stock price rise enough that they can sell their shares and leave immediately. And companies are, for some stupid reason, legally obligated to make decisions that benefit their stock prices rather than actually making them money because they will get in serious legal trouble if they’re perceived as doing things that they know will not benefit their shareholders. Companies hardly even benefit directly off of stock sales anyways, it’s all about the shareholders and that’s why they make decisions like these.

I’m loving Helldivers 2 so much right now. So much fun.

I was planning on buying a PC just for helldivers 2, and have been avoided videos of it like it's the plague, but I'll have to hold off on buying a PC until Sony reverts, or at least compromises on this decision. Hate to see another amazing game fall to greed.
