Personally I think series should be allowed to come to their natural end. If the author wants a long story that's fine. If they want to write a short story it's fine. We as readers probably need to read a wider pool of books and act less like addicts.

That part about certain series getting axed for a generic isekai is absolutely spot on. It amazes me how certain manga with actually pretty interesting plots or just have been airing for so long get either axed or is forced to be rush in the stead of a generic isekai with a OP MC, instant harem, etc., it’s really surprising.
@TopShonenRanks
@TopShonenRanks 10 месяцев назад
What I find weird is that not many Isekai are even that big. Like sure there’s the Kadokawa bunch (Shield Hero, Re:Zero, Overlord, Konosuba, Tanya), Slime, and Mushoku Tensei, but other than that, I gotta wonder how much money the other Isekai series are actually making for them to warrant adapting them constantly. Granted a lot of them are given pretty subpar treatment, so I wouldn’t want a critically acclaimed manga to get the same treatment but still it’s wild to me
@epic8413
@epic8413 10 месяцев назад
@@TopShonenRanks that’s what I mean, it’s wild. Ye you got the hidden gems of the genre like you listed, but the vast majority of isekai are extremely subpar, yet they constantly keep getting rushed in and have found a spot to “flourish”.

I'm not sure if you're super aware of the new series coming out in Jump, but this is exactly what's going on. Series that genuinely seem interesting like Fabricant 100 or Ginka & Gluna have to face the axe while an absolutely generic series like Nue's Exorcist continues to thrive.

Sure we are getting lots of new series but, 90% of them are overused to death and if they are good and unique they will be axed because of people not seeing them. I really hope we appreciate the care that mangakas put into those longer and more thought out series or we will lose them all.

Someone else did a video on this some time ago, and I actually decided to check it out. Honestly, The 2000s HST era seems more like a massive outlier than anything. Besides the HST itself and Dragon Ball not long before it, you also had Fairy Tail, Inuyasha, and I think there was another one. It just so happened that the biggest stuff at the time was all super long running stuff and with anime/manga becoming more widespread and the spread of the internet, a lot of people just took that as the norm. There really aren't that many 500+ chapter weekly series in the grand scheme of things. Same with monthly/irregular series. There aren't all that many many. Also, while not manga, there're plenty of long-running manwha out there. God of Highschool just ended last year with 570+ chapters, and Tower of God's been going since 2010, though the author did end up taking a year long hiatus followed by another 7 month hiatus not too long after back in 2020/2021.

Kubo being rushed by Shuheisha is actually misinformation that was spread over the years. Kubo's revealed his original plan during an interview which either took place in the beginning or even before the TYBW began in the manga. At first he wanted to make the TYBW even longer than the Arrancar arc. However, as you can tell, it came out to be about a hundred chapters shorter. The anime at its current pacing will cover the manga content (even with added extra content in-between) by the end of cour 3 which likely means that an entire cour will be dedicated to completely new content that Kubo didn't get to draw in the manga. Anyways, I'm going on a tangent here. The reason as to why Kubo ended Bleach on a short note was because of his poor health. Not only did he share that he began catching colds all the time and that it got harder and harder to get rid of them, but at some point it got so bad that he was straight up sick all the time throughout the year. That, combined with an arm injury (torn shoulder) served as perfect breeding ground for excessive hate and speculations regarding Bleach and its author. Kubo shared that he wanted to quit drawing and drop the manga, however a letter from a fan on their deathbed (you can read about that online if you wish) gave him the strength to finish the manga, alas he wasn't able to polish it.

This presents a lot of random information as facts towards a specific argument when more than half of it isn't been a hardcore bleach fan for for nearly 15 years started reading in 09, I won't go through each of the arguments you make here and debunk/ correct them because I don't care enough to do that and it's a waste of time but what I will say is this Kubo was 100% rushed by shueisha to bring bleach to a completions there's is no denying that the proof is there to find that paired with Kubo's declining health at the time during the end of the lost agent arc into the tybw arc. Another thing before I leave the entire kid of deathbed letter situation as you present it here is extremely misrepresented
@gremmy5339
@gremmy5339 10 месяцев назад
@fable2830 There's literally no evidence that he was rushed by Shuheisha. None at all. It's all a myth that used to circulate since Bleach's manga started wrapping up. This speculation has got the same legendary status as "Bleach falls off after Soul Society arc". For how ill founded and widespread it was and still is, unfortunately. Though Shuheisha's EIC at the time was definitely undermining Bleach. Everything else I said is directly taken from Kubo's comments and/or interviews.
@omegashenron8
@omegashenron8 10 месяцев назад
@@gremmy5339 Fan since 06 here, chiming in. Yes there has been PLENTY of evidence that it was rushed by Shuiesha. The series started to drop in sales during the Full Bring Arc and many people dropped it during this time. It wasn't until TYBW that the series started to see a pick up in sales but it still wasn't enough so they gave Kubo a deadline before it got axed.
@gremmy5339
@gremmy5339 10 месяцев назад
@omegashenron8 Again, unless there is an official statement (there is not), there is no reason to be saying that. At the time Bleach was selling like, what? 500k on average per volume? No one in their right mind would axe it. Likewise the anime wasn't axed either. It simply caught up to the manga. Black Clover recently went through a similar scenario where instead of doing more fillers they just put it on hold. Bleach's TYBW anime was greenlit all the way back in 2017. Again, there's literally no reason to assume that Shuheisha rushed Kubo in any way. Manga sales dipping is a natural phenomenon that occurs in every series. Every series will reach its peak in popularity in sales and will inevitably also dip.

I honestly like a mix of long running and short running. For me it varies on mood and how the series executes its length. I love long series that keep quality consistent, have semi-isolated arcs so I can take breaks, and build up a solid world/cast over time that rewards readers with increasing development or stakes; such as Berserk and OP. However, I also like the super short series that say what they want in the style they want in a very convenient and digestible time frame, such as Cowboy Bebop or Akame Ga Kill. You can finish those series in a binge day or over the course of a week or two and still have a very satisfying story. Both have their pros and cons. And like you said, there are pros and cons towards the authors as well. Some authors do not want to invest that much time or energy, but some do. Ideally though, I personally like the mid length series the best overall. Ones that have a great setting, cast, and plot as well as just enough time to build it all up and end. Series like YuYu Hakusho, DBZ (Z since it can be isolated), and Naruto (kind of? Its a bit on the longer end of the spectrum, but nowehere near OP or Ippo). With those length series its like you get the best of both worlds imo. I think due to the influence of business and internet, manga and anime trends seem to be supporting the shorter side, but I expect exceptions and maybe even a resurgence of the long possibly if the public gets tried of the short formula. i mean OP gained the title of best selling manga in the beginning of this short beats long era. Personally I think a variety is good and companies should not aim for absolute perfect ratings. Tokyo Ghoul did not deserve its shitty anime adaptation post S1 since if I remember S1 did pretty good ratings wise. If it wasn't basically axed into shit quality, it would have done great numbers imo since the manga was beloved. The cutthroat style of the industry where they only go after peak profit is definitely something that should change. I understand it is a business, but overall it is just making the industry stale with short run of the mill isekai stuff as you said. Lengths can vary bc any length series has potential to be great, but cuthroat business practices can harm a lot.

Honestly, I think it will probably be the same as usual. Most manga that get past the axe last around 20-30 volumes, and the series that run for 10-15 have always been outliers, and I don't see it having a huge shift. And axed manga are pretty much the same as it always has been, but this is the first time where western audiences actually can read axed manga for the first time. And if a manga cannot grab an audience in half a year of publishing, it honestly makes sense that it would be canceled. What I'm more worried about is the anime industry. Nowadays we only get one cour shows, and I think that's a problem. Gone are the days where a story can breathe with 24-52 episodes, now it has to have 12 unless it's adapting a Shonen Jump manga like My Hero or Jujutsu Kaisen. Look what happened to Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, which would have benefited from 50 episodes. The anime industry is stretched thin, and only shows like PreCure are getting 50 episodes in a year.

I rarely read ongoings from the very first chapter. I usually try to see what people say. With this one I came to the first chapter enjoyed it and read it weekly. But then it got rushed. The longevity of a series is dependent on a mangaka’s presence in a storytelling aspect. If I work with Viz it will last for decades but there are still moments of worry. Self publishing you can write or illustrate at your own pace. The same point remains since if there is dedication then new readers will follow.

It got rushed at the end, but thankfully we got an anime adaptation and they're putting in the work to do it justice, plus the author is involved in the project, adding things that he didn't get the chance to put in the manga and changing things around now that he has more room to tell the story properly.

Id be all for making interesting premises more short h consise. Would also give authors better stepping stones to grow as artists/authors by not getting stuck in one theme etc. That being said, thats the hard part right? The longer a series, the harder it is to keep a scope in mind, and the easier it is to avoid a payoff or feel like youre starting to crash. I bet there's a lot of manga that could do better if they were released all at once, where the contents add up to about a films worth of a story, and then you can experience it all in one go. So many people wait till stuff is done to start it, or hear if it was worth it anyways. The author also has the ability to look at their whole narrative at once and build or take away fat to the storyline, like traditional scripted stuff. But... then it isnt in the public consciousness for a long time to get you to keep paying.. so i doubt it will happen in any meaningul way unless it basically forms its own pocket/platforms, perhaps more easily done digitally.

Yeah I agree there's definitely going to be less long manga which is a shame because I enjoy long manga but times are changing. I'm also in high school right now so I have time to read long manga but in the future shorter manga would probably be better too. I hope there will be at least 1 or 2 new long manga though because many long running manga are ending soon

I myself prefer long running series like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Berserk, Vagabond, Baki, etc. I hope One Punch Man and Chainsaw Man go on for a long time too, they're definitely amongst my on going favorite manga. And I hope long running series don't die, they're definitely a big part of the industry and it's its own type of stortelling. There are certain narrative techniques and aspects like worldbuilding, catharsis and other type of pay offs that can only be achieved through a long running series.

I mean it isn't just the anime and manga industry, this also applies to American TV shows and movie series. It seems like if a series goes past a certain point audiences just fall out of love with it. Whether it just went on for too long and people stopped caring to keep up with it. It hit a certain point where it wasn't as entertaining to watch anymore or did something so jarring that caused fans to drop it almost immediately. The biggest hbo show recently was Succession and you would have thought that it would go on for potentially 3-4 more seasons than it did. Then you see series like the walking dead where after it's 5th season the show just lost popularity that it never recovered because it became repetitive. Most stories that needed multiple movies to tell were told in trilogies and usually by the third movie, some of them had waning interest with their audience. But then there was a desperate attempt by the studio that made them to bring it back for the Ill faded 4th entry. Which was usually bad and people would forget it exists or it would surprisingly reignite interest in the series until they burned it out again. I think at this point people don't want their time wasted with a show that's padded with unnecessary episodes or movie script ideas that were forced into being a sequel for this or that popular one off movie. They want a clear plan with the story so it doesn't drag and get boring. I'm a one piece fan and lemme tell you there are multiple arcs of one piece that were boring to get through and I probably would have dropped it had I been reading it weekly at the time or god forbid if it was on a monthly release. I think people have just gotten more precious with how much entertainment they're consuming.

Personally i think if you have a good story and want it to continue and it doesnt get the cut then it will flourish. So many manga, webtoons and manwha that i'm currently in the 200's for that when i started i never even thought how long it'll last. Theres definitely a trend to shorter anime and manga but i dont think its all bad. Some anime are too big to overcome if your not there day one (one piece is a good example) When something is in the 100's chapters and is gonna end around 300 chapters its a whole lote more manageable, Plus it forces you to actually go find other stuff you wouldn't usually read or watch. Thats how its been for me, i love long anime when they hit but so many times really long anime require an initial "wait until x chapter then its good". Rambling but heres my 2 cents.,

There's also a demographic aspect. In the past, a new shonen would come out, 12-year-olds would get hook and continue reading and buying into their thirties. Sure, more readers join along the way and otakus in their 50s aren't above picking up the new hot series, but the core audience is that slice of the population that was 12 when it just came out. With the collapse of Japanese demography, there's just not enough 12-year-olds currently to make long running shonen the cash-cow of yesteryear.

Money is sadly prioritized over things like the quality and time needed for projects, and that makes sense. But having said that I can still feel the pain of wanting something close to it's full potential... This isn't only concerning mangas or anime, you can find it in most businesses. My only clue on how to bypass these things is to invest in it with your own personal time and passionately work on it yourself. Creativity and the work it takes to actually make something are also crippled by things like deadlines, rushing things doesn't help anyone.

i like long manga, but i've also grown to expect a weekly anime of long mangas, like the big three, dragon ball, fairy tail, black clover, hajime no ippo, ultimate muscle, and kenshin. because those are going for a long long time, so people wouldn't want to wait years for it to be animated. but recently allot of the series that seem to have weekly anime potential keep on having seasonal series, and some times those never even get finished, like seraph of the end. this kind of this is making weekly animes die out.

6:00 i dont think youre thinking about the logistics that come from longer series, it's mostly the opposite because long series tend to be stretched out not the other way around, mangakas are getting sick of getting stuck in a single project, like horikoshi, fujimoto, aka akasaka, muneyuki kaneshiro among others, they love that their series blow up, but then it's a matter of time until health declines and hiatus happen too. it's not about the readers it's about the relation between publishers and authors
@Black_Guy
@Black_Guy 10 месяцев назад
I think there should be like 2 to 5 long running manga in each genre. People need that reliable story they can turn to. I'd be okay with the average manga run being 3.5 to 5 years. But I think, when these publishers start a new story, they should give the author 1 year minimum to develop their story. 50 chapters is plenty of time to establish a world and a story that people can know what to expect. A story getting axed after a couple of months is bananas, especially if there is a sizeable fanbase buying volumes. Every manga won't be mainstream. But I think having those niche fanbases are good for diversity in manga and can make space for people who may into a specific niche.

I’m sure with Tite Kubo’s Bleach, the ending in the anime hopefully will be different than the manga so that it can show how the author really wanted it to end. I mean that hiatus between bleach and tybw obviously must’ve been enough time for Tite Kubo to think about the direction he wanted the anime to go about it’s ending.

I think the biggest thing is before it was almost impossible to get a manga so if you had one success you'd want it to be made for a really long time but now wit technology you can just make one and upload directly. people will find it or fans will organically follow it unlike back then where it was actual books that needed to get made. Way more gatekeepers. So now a mangaka feels the freedom of "I can just make other manga, this one thing doesn't have to be my thing forever"
