It's kind of amazing just how everything works in this scene. The message, the acting, the setting, the cinematography, all of it... In four minutes, it sums up the weight and nuance of this entire character succinctly and perfectly, and it does so without CGI or bashing you over the head with it. I'm not joking when I say this is easily one of the better/most impactful scenes in film history....

I agree wholeheartedly! They chose a beautiful location in Alberta, Canada to use for the Smallville scenes. I believe the cemetery scene is in a location known as Beynon Canyon. There is also a RU-vid video of filming locations that shows the locations of the school, Kent family farm, and the cemetery scene as well.

They made a silly oversight in this movie though. There is NO WAY Pa Kent should of died. On Clark's journey here I would pretty much have to say he learned a plethora on human civilization, history, etc. and you mean to tell me he wasn't taught first aid / CPR?! You CAN be revived . 6 minutes before cataclysmic brain damage. Let's say because Pa was obviously old that his window to be revived is half the standard time. Even with that , the distance he was from Clark would be more than enough time for Clark to get to him and save him.

this movies doesn't really get the credit it deserves. its more complicated than just the origin story of a big blue boy scout as its often described. this scene is a perfect illustration of that. Clark has all these powers, but he couldn't save his father. Then, when he falls in love he feels that same sense of hopelessness in not being able to have saved her at the time. Great movie, a lot of subtext.

I will go even deeper into it. Hollywood today would not allow a scene like this because the current political climate is that of vague nuance and uncertainty. Superman now is not meant to be an inspirational beacon of hope like Richard Donner wanted to portray him as here. Today it is very dangerous to openly have any kind of moral compass, any kind of stable, rock steady, base of meaning to fall back on. The only thing movies today seem to agree is that you shouldn't let psychopaths kill people, and even then it's only implied without any drive or reason behind. It just so happens to happen and that's all you see in the Man of Steel. Oh that "I better stop these guys because they'll kill everyone just because". No emotional weight is given to Superman at all and that's the problem with most superhero movies

0:34 - Clark: I mean, is it showing off if somebody's doing the things he's capable of doing? Is a bird showing off when it... FLIES?! An ominous precursor, to what he is potentially capable of later on in the story. 🤔
@PeachLover94
@PeachLover94 3 года назад
Well, yes - a bird is showing off when it flies. But that in and of itself isn't always a bad thing. As Jor-El's spirit in the scene after saving Air Force One tells Kal-El/Clark/Superman in the Fortress... " _Do not punish_ yourself for your feelings of vanity. Simply learn to _control_ them. It is an affliction common to _all,_ even _on Krypton._ "

What makes this scene more powerful is that soon after his adoptive father John Kent dies, Clark reconnects with his birth father and together goes on spiritual journey with him and then emerges as Superman with a fierce determination to fight for truth, justice, and the American way.

I had to dig deep and realized I did see this in the movies in 1978. And again when it was broadcast on ABC Channel 7 in New York City in 1983 five years later. The signal probably came from the Twin Towers and received on the rabbit antennas of a color television which at that time was new technology. The TV I watched it on had a tube which had to be replaced from time to time by a TV repairman. Having had watched the 3 hour TV version, it ran from 9PM to 12 Midnight. That I remember. Of course, I was eager to watch it and was tuned in for the whole show. Despite what others may highlight about it, I was there for it and say it was a little too long. The reason was that it was heavily saturated with commercials making it longer than needed. But it was Superman. It required some steel having not fallen asleep. Some memories last longer than others.

If Clark heard Brad say bad things about Clark's adopted father, who fell victim to a heart attack the same day Brad ordered Clark to pick up the football equipment at school to keep him away from Lana, would Clark give Brad a piece of his mind or not without giving himself away?

In this film, this is basically the one scene that stands in for all his growing up and learning who he is. In the context of this film, it fills that roll beautifully, and sets up the emotional arc of the film in one marvelous scene. For anyone who describes John Williams' score for this film as "loud" or "thunderous" (even in praise)... please listen to this scene as an example of how finely etched and how variegated this score is. it is so much more than just the theme, and conveys emotional and character information at every turn.

The Donner/Reeve movies sometimes gets crapped on by modern Superman fans for not showing enough of the "human" side of Kal-El and being Clark Kent more instead of Superman, but THIS movie was the first to show Kal-El disobey his Krytponian heritage, disobey Jor-El and all his sanctimonious rules and listen to the Kents and his Clark Kent side when Supes is flying in the clouds in rage after Lois dies at the end of the movie. He uses his powers to bring back Lois. Without this movie, you don't get the inspiration for the Smallville TV show, as everyone remembered this scene, and you don't get Supes embrace Clark Kent far more in later movies and shows, as well as the reboot comics from the mid 80s.

And that's what makes him Superman. He understands the fragility of life. It's why he values life so much. Death is an inevitable part of living, which is why saving lives and helping people is so important to him. If James Gunn can even capture half the weight of this message, then the character is in good hands.

If anyone watched Invincible cartoon show, this scene proved why Nolan Grayson/Omniman lacked something. He married Debbie and had Mark but still, he followed the Viltrumite philosophy and treated them as nothing but "pets". That's why Superman is one of my favorite superheroes because he was adopted by the Kent family because they teach him a lessons between the good & bad things and how to balance it.
