It seems to be always freaking usopp that gets me man I’ve only cried twice when reading one piece and that’s the death of the merry/usopp telling everybody to jump as merry arrives and usopps speech to the tontata
It was this very arc, this very moment that solidified my love for One Piece, no other moment in the series has made me cry as hard as that scene did. The fact Oda was able to make me cry over a ship still surprises me and still makes me tear up. Merry will always live on in our hearts and in the hearts of the Straw hats.

"Without you, I can't become the pirate king! " Man, when I read that chapter, I litteraly cried for minutes like a baby. And imagine I'm at the locker room of my work. My co-workers ask me what's wrong, but they wont understand. The feels on that chapter is so much heavy.
Me: "C'mon, an anime can't make me cry..." Oda: "Hold my pencil" Also me: "T.T ...oh...ok, Oda, but u can't do it again!" Also Oda: "Oh boy, a lot of pencils are yet to be hold!"
Honestly Ace's death is overhyped, he was literally in two arcs, maybe a total of 3 - 5 chapters before the whole Impel Down thing happened and he became more of a focus, and he only became a focus because the entire point was to save his life. I cared much more about how much the death affected Luffy than Ace's actual death itself, maybe if the whole flashback was before his death it might've been better. Merry on the other hand was THERE for hundreds of chapters, and it was a bloody ship, but it had importance to Usopp in particular, but the entire crew as well, and then Skypeia introduced the Klabautermann to give the Merry a "literal" soul, Water 7 to have the whole crew drama, then Enies Lobby with the Merry quite literally saving the day one last time for the crew before it had it's sendoff.
@@thundergaming155 the burning of the merry was the first and only time i cried in the story of one piece. Only one other anime has made me cry a bit. But ace's death didn't make me cry
@@quieteagle184 aces death didnt make me cry cause ace himself caused his own death. He fell for a cheap and easy taunt from Akainu. Far as I'm concerned ace deserved to die for being an idiot. May seem harsh but ace was too thin skinned to let something like somebody talking shit get to him so easily
Tekking is right. Objects become relevant enough to the story that develop plot armor. First it's Luffy's strawhat that is tied to his promise with Shanks. The worst it had was pierced by Buggy, but Nami patched it up. Then it's Wado Ichimongi. Zorro vowed to it that he would become the greatest swordman fullfilling Quinas wish. So if one of his 3 swords has to break Wado won't be it. Lastly the Sunny is bound to at least Franky's dream so it isnt possible to get wrecked.
@@ΑργυρηςΒαϊνάς I think in frankys case for me it's possible for it to get wrecked but more likely the ship won't be able to be damaged enough that Franky can't fix it I can see the figurehead getting ripped off or the mast breaking and cannonball holes but Franky will always be able to repair the damage

I have tried with my friend who got me into anime and he absolutely hates one piece for petty reasons, of the big 3 anime/Manga he only likes Naruto and fan boys the heck out of it with no willingness to see what has become of this the longest running anime because the first few arcs are "poorly" animated
14:02 "A God damned *lamb* man" - This was definitely one of the times I teared up in the manga, but full tears fell during the anime. Wasn't hard crying, but I definitely had to keep wiping away tears, haha - I loved that it was clear *everyone* present could hear the Merry speaking, not just the Straw Hats. Made it more powerful

I honestly didnt cry when ace died. Cause it was his own fault that it happened. He was stupid enough to fall for such a cheap and easy taunt from Akainu. If he would have kept going like he should have then more than likely he'd be alive right now but instead he had to turn around. I felt more sad for luffy than ace honestly. Then again he had to die for luffy to get serious and show how weak he was cause otherwise I doubt the time skip would have happened
@@darknesswave100He was written as a flawed character. A lot of one piece characters are written that way. They make genuine human mistakes you wouldn't expect in a manga. That's one of the reasons that makes Oda's character writing great. Besides, that moment was aimed more at being emotional for us through Luffy and not Ace. And it was a very well written moment because of those reasons.

I started reading One Piece two months ago and just got to thriller bark. I've never read op but have seen lots of spoilers so I knew merry was gonna "die". But when merry saved them at enies lobby I was ugly crying like crazy then the funeral that I knew as coming and it still go to me. That's amazing knowing a ad moment is coming and knowing most of the details but the connection you make with merry still resonated and it was still emotional even with spoilers.
When " Mother Sea" starts playing you know tear ducts be bursting. It plays during every almost ultra sad moment, something about it tugs at the heart.
actually it was really stated back in the days by oda ... I just saw an interview with one piece japanese voice actors and Hiroaki Hirata "sanji's voice actor" said that oda told him about a strawhat that's gonna die and turned out it's the merry all along
I'm reading/watching One Piece for like almost 15 years now. I'm 28 and this was the saddest moment i have ever felt in my life. Everytime when someone reminds me this or when i bump into it on youtube even without watching it i cry like a child.
The bit with pica brought up a question in my head. How would some of the villains of one piece react upon seeing the straw hats if they had the ability to watch one piece.
I know most people split the One Piece story into two parts with the timeskip but for me the split between old One Piece and modern One Piece has always been whether the Strawhats are on the Merry or on the Sunny. A similar thing happened with Naruto where I consider the beginning of Shippuden to still be old Naruto and when Kakuzu and Hidan show up that's where modern Naruto starts. This is actually even clearer with the anime since if I remember correctly this was also when both series changed into widescreen.
I cried when I read this. I cried when I saw it in the anime. I cried when I watched someone else react to it, and I even teared up during Totallynotmarks review where he just passingly talked about the merry's death. I honestly have no idea why this moment resonates with me so much, but it always invokes at least a bit of a reaction from me.
Ik this has nothing to really do with the death of the merry, but one of my favorite zoro moments was when giraffe man told zoro that the merry wasn't able to be fixed, he asked the merry if it was true that it couldn't be fixed. I love moments that tear away zoro's tough exterior.
I did cry at the death of the Going Merry. I only got into OnePiece recently, so my reaction was pretty recent. Most emotional moment - for sadness, that is definitely one of my top ones. One of my personal emotional moments was actually the cover page where you see Sakazuki's full tattoo. And I had an "Oh shit" dread/epiphany moment realizing that his tattoo and the fact he almost always covers it up, especially the pink flowers (and maybe I'm wrong, but he does not seem to be the pink flower type. And he always has pink flowers with his tattoo. And only a few characters are tied to pink or flowers. Or cover up their tattoos.) is probably tied to his back story and his hatred of pirates and absolute justice. And it makes reading or watching some of the scenes like Marineford and the buster call at Ohara even scarier, because it makes it hard to tell how much of his motivation is personal and how much is professional with his idea of justice and being a Marine.
If you look at it from everyone's perspectives then you will see how tough this decision was. Luffy is the captain, he needs to look after his crew and continue their journey. Merry could not be repaired, they needed to get a new ship. If Luffy and the straw hats want to achieve their goals then this was something they needed to do. However, Merry is not just a ship. She is a friend who helped them from the beginning. At this point, it feels like Merry was a living thing. Merry had the ability to talk and move, she even had emotions. It was hard for everyone but it was especially hard for Usopp, this ship meant so much to him. That is why he refused to let it go. He knew Merry was unrepairable but he found it hard to accept that fact. Some people say Luffy was right, some people say Luffy was wrong. This is one of the things that makes people believe that Luffy is terrible as a main character. This whole Merry thing questioned Luffy's leadership, no one can deny that. If Luffy did not act like a true captain at the time then Zoro would have left as well. Although I am with Luffy, I understand why others would choose to support Usopp. There is no right or wrong answer.
I have been watching One Piece bit by bit, I just finished this episode yesterday, I was not expecting to have as big of an emotional impact from a ship. Rest in Piece Merry.
I can't say how many times I've seen Lion King, but when I was first saw it when it originally came to VHS (movies before DVD which are movies before Blu-ray) I cried my eyes out and my grandmother had to take it out. I still cry to this day when Mufasa dies. When I first watched it my mom had passed away and I was a kid so.. I came to tears during that Furturama episode because I was thinking of me and my dog.. same for "the doggy" in the og Buggy arc. The Going Merry going down after the whole living ship thing.. yea, I bauled like a baby.
I knew from the minute I cried over that ship -- *that damn, amazing ship* -- that I had to stick with this story. No matter how it ends, as long as I'm alive and Oda's alive, I'm reading.
I remember when I first saw the Death Of The Going Merry I was binging One Piece and I was home alone because my sister was at the hospital and I cried like a bitch
Me, working on my daily Inktober entry, listening to Tekking: What? Why is my ink all runny? *sniff* why is the world all runny *sniiiifffff* And this came on the heels of Robin's beg emotional moment (which also made me cry). FFs, that was just a rough couple of arcs . ..
The only part I cried in anime is When inside my hero academia is when Eri could not even smile until after the show when she explains how fun the show was and she was like “AND THEN HE WAS LIKE SWOOSH AND AND THEN SHE WAS LIKE WOOOOOOOW AND THEN I WAS WOOOOOOOW TOOO” honestly that made me tear up
I still remember the first time I saw this episode. Just like Tekking I was aware they got a new ship so I knew the Merry would have to go some time. But damn that ship made me cry so much it was like I was watching my own family pass. Every time I re-read/re-watch this arc, see fan art of the Merry, or just think about there passing it still brings me to tears. It was to me the saddest moment in OP and I cherish this anime for making me feel so many emotions when I never expect to. RIP Merry you are gone but never forgotten
The Going Merry viking funeral and Luffy and Usopp arguing were the only two times in my entire life I have cried watching any show. I have gotten emotional at a lot of shows but never outright shed tears aside form those two instances.
Damn it tekking... The memories of crying while watching this episode brought up... You're on point there... When merry said sorry to the strawhats... That was the time I wept like a baby... The heartache is real. Twas like loosing a member of a family member. And even now. I cried a little when you describe that scene... I remember it very well... So yeah.. good job on making everyone cry man!..

I think a video listing/ranking a large amount of the non-fodder swordsmen we know of in One Piece would be fun and interesting. Comparing abilities, strength, Haki, background, motive, etc. I think it’d be cool.
How dare you! I had already braced myself for the merry before clicking the video, but not even 4 minutes into the video you hit me with the Old Yeller of my generation. I literally had to pause to recollect myself.
Even though I cry at a lot of the emotional moments of One Piece, the Merry's funeral is definetly the saddest moment in the story for me, even more than Ace and Whitebeard. I can just go put on 312 if I ever want to ball my eyes out. From the first time to the 8th time I watch it, still sobbing. Man Oda is great at writing. Also Dear friends by TRIPLANE is just a song I can get sad and happy with anytime, because of all the memories with the Merry. Been misty-eyed the entire video so far! SHE WAS A STRAWHAT! Edit: yup... there where tears, so many tears towards later in the video.
There are two scenes in anime that I just cannot watch without crying. Robin's "I want to live" from One Piece, and the moment when Kazuto visits Asuna in the hospital after she finally wakes up after being stuck in ALO in Sword Art Online, their first meeting in the real world.
I cried my eyes out reading the manga literally just got teary eyed when you mentioned how merry showed up at the last second to save them the pure joy of usopp in the instance just breaks me down
I remember binging the anime for the first time. It was like 2 AM. I was determined to get through Enies Lobby. I got to this scene and I remember curling up into a ball and crying. I couldn't stop. The episode had long since ended and I was still bawling my eyes out. This scene was what solidifed One Piece as one of my favorite animes of all time. Other animes have made me weep and cry. But never broke me as this scene did. Praise gOda!
The Going Merry showed up to rescue her crew at Enies Lobby, I just realized that the Rocketman did the same thing for Frankie. It didn’t sail itself there, but still. The damn thing FLEW multiple times and charged through buildings like the Kool-Aid Man to get to Frankie with Kokoro at the helm. I wonder what happened to Rocketman after it was all said and done. Last we saw, he’s still at Enies Lobby. It might’ve been destroyed by the Buster Call, but it’d be kinda cool if Vegapunk got ahold of Rocketman and it got brought back later. Oda never forgets 😎

The sunny is one of the few things you don't miss until it's gone Another is fgo Romani as you don't miss him until he is actually gone and you feel it. Good writing as it shows you take something for granted until it's gone and the merry is one of those things. I cried when 3rs hokage dies as we needed him most and he is gone. One piece would be ace and merry. Fsn ubw and zero seeing kiritsugu and illya in thier sad moments.
Though, to be fair, anything with dogs tends to get me... That scene from I am Legend where the dog gets bitten by the zombies and Will Smith had to put him down while hugging him... Hell, I'm tearing up just thinking of it.
I feel like part of the reason Merry's death hit so hard was because no one could really expect they'd care so much about a ship. When I first came to realize the Merry was going to die I thought oh ok and just wanted to move forward. By the end it was hands down one of the most impactful moments to me in all of anime. I had never expected to care so much for a ship, but the anime made me realize it. It was written so well and I can only imagine was so hard to pull off, but boy was it amazing
Tekking would you recommend reading the manga for all shows ongoing or just stay caught up with only the anime? Because I cant seem to get a clear winner, btw love the vids even the ones about shows I don't watch.
