After the end of the sieges of Osaka castle, Tokugawa Ieyasu finally reaches the end of his days. It is here that we will also conclude the series, as we reflect upon the life and legacy of the final great unifier, who brought Japan out of the age of war and into the Edo period.

Definitely. Not even edo period. I would love to hear a more in depth look on the things like personality of the mayor figures in this time and the differences in leadership/administrative styles of different clans and daimyo for example like kind of “boss” was nobunaga as opposed to shingen or Mori Motonari

This is a great and a sad ending for the great series. After Ieyasu´s death the Tokugawa family had to survive without his prestige and support which would have happened sooner or later. It would be interesting to see the life stories of the surviving veteran warlords of the entire Sengoku Jidai (who also lived longer than Ieyasu) era meaning people like Date Masamune, Shimazu Yoshihiro, Uesugi Kagekatsu and Sanada Nobuyuki, the elder brother of Sanada Yukimura.

Other Sengoku Daimyos maybe had more stellar rises or more astounding victories. But like candles burning at both ends they maybe shined brighter but didn’t last very long. Ieyasu in the end was the embodiment of the expression „slow and steady wins the race“!

Imagine this scenario… After Tokugawa Ieyasu passed away, he makes his way to the Garden of the Cherry Blossoms (a personification of Heaven), he is greeted by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga (how did he make his way to Heaven despite blatantly rocking the moniker of “Demon King” and cause total bloodshed in his pursuit of total domination as well as gleefully burning down a Buddhist temple at Mt Hiei) and they embrace and Nobunaga and Hideyoshi congratulate Ieyasu for finally uniting the land and finishing their work. Sanada Yukimura shows up and they invite him to drink with them and they praise him for being the finest warrior that Japan has ever seen. Oda Nobunaga laid the foundations for the house, Toyotomi Hideyoshi finished the house and Tokugawa Ieyasu lived in the house.

Think how content Ieyasu would have been at the end of his life, he started out as a hostage and all that he wanted then was to just live, then when his lord died all he wanted was his land and family back, for most of the early parts of the sengoku Jidai he didn't even have ambitions to take a single province, and then when he did he was still a subordinate and after Nobunaga's death he only wished to be independent, and finally he sat atop being shogun after serving others for so long, making a dynasty that would last for 200 years ruling an entire country.

Well, as sad as I am that the series has finally reached its conclusion, I am glad that I was able to learn a lot about the Sengoku Jidai era through this series (which I started following from around the time when the Okehazama episode was released), especially as I was originally someone who (prior to watching these videos) only became interested in Japanese history from playing the Sengoku Musou/Samurai Warriors video games. But watching this series helped me learn a lot about how the Sengoku Jidai started, the rise (and fall) of the Ikkō-Ikki, and especially about the legendary samurai clans, daimyō, and the many warriors whose feats have lived on in legend and the many battles that occurred throughout the era. Thank you so much Shōgunate for devoting your time to making and presenting this series to us, it has been incredibly informative and interesting.

I have played 2 of the Nobunaga's Ambition game many years ago, and engulfed myself with the story and backdrop of entire Sengoku era. Recently, with the resurgence of the Shogun series, my interest in this era has been reinvigorated, and I was able to find your channel. I misremembered many things that the series dramatised, but your series put everything into perspective, into how tumultuous that era was, and how, romantic it was, at times. Awesome channel! Keep it up

Just before his death, Ieyasu called his retainer, gave them swords, and ordered them to go and cut down criminal . When the vassal returned from cutting down the criminal, Ieyasu used his last strength to swing the sword two or three times. He said he would use this sword to protect his descendants for a long time. The sword was buried with Ieyasu.

From the choice of music, to that of the displayed art and visualisations, as well as the script, you didn't just cover historical information but truly made the viewer feel the humane import, the "weight" of the events that happened. Fantastic direction, and to think it's the work of just one guy. It's not frequently that one gets captivated while learning about history, this much. A really pragmatic warrior, leader and later Shogun ruler. He is not exactly what you call "honorable samurai warrior" as he been allying and then break promises or alliances. But that how most conqueror become ruler in human history. I recall it was "Fried Sea bream" with the rumour that Ieyasu was eating. Date Masamune made a really nice death poem for Ieyasu And with that, thanks for making these videos, I forgot when I been following you but I think it been almost 2 years now. What a trip but like the Sengoku period, everything comes to an end.

Ieyasu is very good at one thing. He was very good at weighing the risk of reward with opportunity but in the end, he was very fortunate things went his way. I'd argue Takeda Shingen still sits at the top as the great example of a Sengoku daimyo even if he did not depose anyone to gain his status and power since Kai Genji had been Shugoshoku of Kai for centuries at that point ,but I'm sure others will contest this.

@@thedragonofechigo7878 Agreed, don't forget Ieyasu also took up alot of policy from Shingen that was written by his 24 Generals how to take care of their home county and investment. Ieyasu might not become popular in history books for being a powerful warrior like Kenshin Uesugi, a brilliant Commander like Shingen Takeda, a daring and practical leader like Oda Nobunaga, a colourful rag to riches story like Toyotomi Hideyoshi or Brilliant Politician like Mori Motonari. Ieyasu is famous for his "Patience" of not letting his failure put him down. Also he trust his generals like his "Four Heavenly Guardians" to fight his battles

@Hanferd the Tokugawa Shitenno of Sakai, Ii, Sakakibara and Honda can actually be sometimes 16 or 24 especially if you include the likes of Honda Masanobu, Matsudaira Tadaakira , Okubo Nagayasu,etc... but the more famous ones are of course Ii Naomasa and Honda Tadakatsu I think what makes Ieyasu interesting is that he did learnt from his hardships and failures, especially something like Mikatagahara, where he nearly lost his life against Takeda, which, of course prompted famous anecdotes such as Ieyasu shitting himself from what had happened or that portrait of himself that was painted. He also just had a knack for being at the right place at the right time because I'm sure if he were to honestly asses it, he wasn't that great of a general compared to many others. I think it's because those figures have so much legend and intrigue attached to their name compared to Ieyasu. When I compare all these men and their accomplishments, Hideyoshis story stands out immediately because not only did he move through the social structure of society at the time but he went on to redefine it himself when he came to rule

@@thedragonofechigo7878 Not to mention most historical books tend to gloss over, but Ieaysu in his younger years seems to be a capable warrior from historical sources, he got injured at least several times from spears and swords after each battle. Usually history books tend to focus more on his political alliances
@thedragonofechigo7878
@thedragonofechigo7878 Год назад
@Hanferd especially in the days when he unified Mikawa and dealt with the Ikki as well as other Kokujin who allied with the ikki that didn't want him to take power and control over the entire province plus considering he did spend his early years as a political hostage, it makes sense why his military record is rather poorly documented during his younger years but obviously it gets better after he allies with Nobunaga and then the likes Shingen and Ujimasa as well for opportunistic reasons of course, more so than being a direct ally like he was with Nobunaga. His political career is obviously highlighted more because it identifies the key steps that he took until he eventually overtook the Toyotomi and established the Bakufu

Would you ever consider making a video about the Four Heavenly Kings of Tokugawa? They seem to be very interesting figures that don't seem to be talked about much especially Sakai Tadatsugu and Sakakibara Yasumasa. Would be cool to see on this channel
