100 Executor Super Star Destroyers take on one of the Empire's Deadliest Weapons - the Death Star. Who comes out on top? Find out in today's very special episode of Star Wars: Who Would Win!
Don't forget to vote on who you think the winner would be, you can do so at 8:20! Also, because I know more about it, we're using Star Wars legends material for this matchup. Enjoy!
A bit about each ship.
The Executor Super Star Destroyer was 19km long, and boasted thousands of weapons, anti-ship defences, and had very strong shields. At the time of its creation, this dreadnought was one of the strongest ships in the galaxy.
The Death Star I was a might space station capable of destroying an entire planet with its super laser. It featured prominently in Star Wars (A New Hope)

If they use a flank group of 20 Executors, directly fly above the openings of the Superlaser Dish where the Beams come out and aggressively open fire at the openings, they would easily diseable the Superweapon functionality. Because it takes a few minutes to recharge the superweapon, enough time to destroy the Death Star Dish. Well one or two has do die to do this but in the end the DS will going down.
@slavicity

It would be better to use those Executors fighter, bombers and auxiliary craft complement to do that. They after all can close and can more precisely drop ordinance to disable or destroy enough of the emitters to take the superlaser out of commission, that would leave all 20 Executors to fight
@paulwasilewski9030
@paulwasilewski9030 Год назад
Sort of a base delta zero on the amplification dish for the superlaser. Yeah, but the problem is if those SSDs are close together in formation that super laser might be able to angle seperate firing solutions by keeping the dish from converging the lasers or even hit one with enough force to slag the others in executor debris.

eckard says to cut down the executor fleet to 10 SSDs. Problem becomes the ties. The executors are outnumbered 7K to 1500. But if they can keep their distance far enough from the DS tand wait on launching ties they can reverse the fighter superiority with the executor antifighter weapon THEN launch their ties to keep the enemy fighters from retreat. Then they can concentrate on the DS.

Planetary shield can be penetrated by specialised Siege Platform of Imperium. They did that with 500 of proton torpedo launchers - and they were very powerfull proton torpedoes. I think shield could handle one shot, after it would overload and be destroyed or disabled. Question is- if it handle power of DS once , will be repaired to second shot, and if yes, it can make it more times. If yes, it is still only matter when shield generator will fall and planet will be crushed.

HrothgarHeavenlight i have to agree if it was a shot at a random point on the shield. what about if it hit directly on the station that controls the opening part? half the station was outside the shield. and does the shield actually cut through that halfway point out is it a serious weak point? im inclined to think it's a serious weak point since a star destroyer ramming it was enough to destroy it. i think your theory works if it hit anywhere else, but we still come to the same conclusion. it might take a couple of shots, but they would definitely surrender or be destroyed.

I do wonder how well the tractor beams could move something as large as a SSD. Maybe it could just barely hold one still. Maybe it would barely affect it. Maybe it could throw them around like children's toys. Do we have any specs on how powerful the Death Star's tractor beams are? Surely strong enough to take in a standard sized cruiser, considering their intended usage. But against a cruiser many times larger than standard?

Do you think it would be interesting to see how much the DeathStar (1 or 2) cost in terms of resources and then match it up against a comparable cost in Executor type SSDs in a kind of 'was it worth it' scenario? 'Cos I think that would be a cool thought experiment. Loving the videos btw, I'm fairly recent to the channel so there's quite a bit to catch up on... you're a prolific poster aren't you!? Lol
@aaronoesterle3860
@aaronoesterle3860 7 лет назад
First the matchup - EckhartsLadder - I agree that the Super Star Destroyers would win, with one very big caveat - the targeting of the Superlaser, and how the SSDs meet the the Death Star. If the Superlaser can adjust its aim some amount (say on the order of 5-10 degrees) without the Death Star moving, and they can keep firing so it cuts across multiple SSDs in one shot, then the Death STar can become much more effective. But, I don't know that this is possible. Still pushing for E-Wing vs T-70 X-wing

As per the Star Wars encyclopaedia Star Wars: Absolutely Everything you Need to Know, the original Death Star took 24 hours to recharge its super laser once it had fired a single shot. (great video as usual :-) here's my suggestion for a strategy for the Executors to employ) I'd use 10 to 20 executors to keep the death star laser team distracted and then set up 4 more ships out of turbo laser range on the side of the Death Star opposite the laser - then in unison have all 4 try to hyperspace ram the Death Star in roughly the same area (amended: the gravity effects of the Death Star may complicate this strategy unless you can override the automatic "shut off" feature of their hyperdrives that would presumably be triggered by the gravity well created by the mass of the Death Star itself) I realize deliberately destroying 4 Executors is extreme, but you have to weigh it against how many large ships and Tie fighghers would have been destroyed by the Death Star's super laser and other armaments in the time it took for the Executors' to take out the Death Star with their weaponry. Prior to initiating the attacks you could/should certainly reduce the crews of the 4 ramming ships down to the minimum required to simply allow the ships to perform the hyperspace ramming maneuver - thus having to sacrifice the fewest lives possible (could also attempt to ask for volunteers from the each ship to employ as the skeleton crews to further lessen the overall negative morale impact of the strategy) Having finished the logistical preparations for the attack: have the Executors' stagger their timing slightly so that they don't chance hitting each other as they go in - could come diagonally down and inward so that from 4 separate outward starting points they all impact within a mile or two radius. The idea being that successive strikes to roughly the same location could possibly be enough to fatally compromise the Death Star's hull integrity down to a depth that wouldn't be repairable in time to save the station. In the event that the final ship pierces all the way to the core of the Death Star (which is obviously a long shot considering how big it is) that would pretty well take out the station a la the destruction of the 2nd Death Star. In the movie, we did see what the effect (by no means fatal but pretty nasty none the less) would be of an Executor impacting the death star at a relatively slow speed, but now instead combine the mass of 4 Executors accelerated to the speed achieved by hyperspace ramming. I guess you could calculate the physics with a formula to see just how much force would be applied upon impact (and that doesn't count the effect of the ships' reactors and any volatile ammunition on board, if there is such in the Star Wars universe, exploding *within* the Death Star's outer "hull" (not sure what the right word would be) - where the inner structural integrity/strength will actually work against the space station by restricting the volume of the explosions, thus increasing the blast pressures created. (to ending question - I think he's right. Turbo lasers and photon torpedoes etc can only do so much damage against something as massive as a planet, though it probably would depend on the make up of the planet's crust as to just how damaging regular star ship weapons would be against a planet. But ultimately I think 10,000 star ships wouldn't be able to blow up a planet b/c their weapons systems just don't have the max energy necessary to take out a planet. The Death Star only pulls it off b/c of its ability to concentrate an obscene amount of energy and direct it to a relatively small area - I'm guessing the Death Star takes out planets by having its laser bore through the crust, down to the core and then by disrupting or igniting or something the core of the target planet - maybe by triggering a massive fusion reaction/explosion within the planet's core that rips the rest of the planet apart)

I would say their technological feats are similar to those some of the ancient advanced races from star wars. The Stargates are similar to the Gree, Kwa, and Rakata hypergates. The Rakata teleporters are like the ancient teleporters and rings. Like the Rakata and Gree the ancients possessed small scale terraforming and xenomorphing tech capable of acting on a massive scale. And finally like the Gree and Kwa the ancients were capable of manipulating other plains of existence with their technology for their own ends.

Of course the SSDs could chew these up in under a minute. In terms of tactics, I would play the battle somewhat differently. I would order any SSDs with line of sight to target the super laser emitters and try to disable that weapon. the ssds could fire on the super laser while outside of its firing arc. as the ssd was I believe 18 km long that makes it over 10% the diameter of the 160km death star(120km by some sources). The closer they could get to the hull the easier it would be to maneuver such as to avoid the main weapon by outpacing the death star turn rate. Another point is that I would order fire concentrated on the death stars engines, so as to immobilize it and prevent it maneuvering, meaning the superlaser would be easily avoided. the disadvantage here is that many SSDs that close would form a fairly dense shell around the DS and collisions would be a great danger. I would therefore order the SSDs to fly with their sides facing the death star so as to give each other more room. at face value this seems to give perhaps less than half of the SSD weapons a shot at the death star, but when you consider at a distance of perhaps 15km the deathstar will present a massive target, I believe 85% of the SSD weapons could target SOME portion of the death star in this orientation. And as you said the SSDs have a combined total of about 10x the turbolasers of the DS. even if only 40% of the SSD weapons could target the DS, the SSD fleet could task 3-4 turbolasers to destroying each of the DS turbolasers. with this ratio I believe the SSD fleet, with good coordination from the fleet commander in assigning each ship target areas and from ship captains in dividing up targeting responsibilities between batteries, could effectively destroy the death star surface guns in perhaps 2 minutes(once the fleet had surrounded the DS), though the surface would be progressively cleared as the fleet spread around the station. by this point the DS fighters would have been deployed and I would have my ships switch to targeting them instead. Also while the SSDs ties have a 2 to 1 advantage, I believe they would be able to destroy the DS fighter compliment even more quickly. I would have the fighters fly screens around the SSDs keeping a distance far enough away from the DS turbolasers to avoid losing too many fighters, even keeping the well shielded SSDs between them and the DS, which would also avoid the risk of friendly fire from the SSDs targeting the DS. with a 2 to 1 fighter advantage and each DS fighter being targeted by a good 10 laser batteries I expect a very decisive victory with only 1200-1500 of my fighters lost at most. Now with practically every DS surface weapon destroyed and its fighters and capital ships gone, my remaining 13-14 thousand fighters(including the bombers which would only now be launched since air superiority had been achieved) would be tasked to strafe and bomb the super laser dish until that weapon was inoperative. at which point the death star could simply be pummeled with impunity. A look from the other side though, if I saw my battle station being rapidly disarmed in this fashion, it would be immediately clear I was losing the battle. If I could not escape to hyperdrive, I would wait till they moved to within a close distance and trigger a reactor overload so as to take the whole fleet with me.

I agree with this assesment. Assuming it makes a kill every 2-3 minutes like you said, It'd take DS1 almost two full hours to shoot down 100 Capital ships, assuming the ships all stay in the same quadrant so DS doesn't have to reposition, AND the ships aren't fighting back. It's like a lion vs. a swarm of bees.

this is a copy and paste from a post I made in a 1701- E vs ISD thread (in second place at time of posting) I just coppied and pasted because it is all still completely relevent Trek vs Wars is not usualy a good idea, it would cause a war in the comments, besides this is a Star Wars chanel and the ISD would not stand a chance, so I recomend against this match up despite how amusing it would be if Eckhart's Ladder does his usual excelent reserch. The USS Enterprise NCC-1701-E would win 10 times out of 10 against any class of Star Destroyer. a fleet of about 30 Star Trek ships have enough firepower to devistate a contenent in seconds (look up DS9 The Die is Cast, there are clips on youtube), it takes a Star Destroyer hours according to many canon and legends sources, meaning Trek Ships are hundreds if not thousands of times as powerful as wars ships, as Trek sheilds hold up to that firepower for a while that sugests Trek shields are hundreds of times as powerful as Wars sheilds, however the firepower advantage does not matter. Trek ships standard sublight crusing speed known as full impulse is 25% the speed of light, the fastest Wars ships move at single figure thousands of KPH when at sublight, Trek ships are many thousands of times as fast and far far more manuverable than Wars capital ships. Wars ships literaly could not hit a competantly piloted Trek ship, you can see a turbolaser bolt travel accross the screen in the Wars films meaning turbolaser bolts fly at a lot less than 25% the speed of light, Trek phasers are also relitively slow traveling beam weapons but that is not so critical with such slow targets. the only way the ISD would outclass the Enterprise is in FTL speed, but Wars Hyperdrives can only travel carefully planned cources while Trek ships can warp to anywhere they want, yes Warp is slower but it would be almost impossible to leverage hyperdrive as an advantage in a 1v1 fight due it it only being straight line and requiring precise calculations and a precise map, Warp does not have those limitations.

This was a VERY Thorough cross analysis, but I feel its more of a Draw, a TIE because we're looking at Total and/or Complete Destruction with little to no survivors (escaping through escape pods technically counts as a loss). The problem is that even though the Executor Class Star Destroyers could Pummel the Surface to the point that the Death Star couldn't fight back, the Death Star is still there, there are Survivors who are still inside that could actually fight back. . . You are probably understand where I'm getting at with this so. . . New Rule(s) on Carrying Capacity and/or Intangibles: Boarding Actions; if a ship has enough troops and/or specific ships to perform boarding actions, then make it so!

@DrMacintosh

The best strategy would be for the Super Star Destroyers to enter the system and then get into medium range. Keeping the ships on the move constantly avoiding the firing arc of the Death Star while using their fighter wings to gain air superiority. The Star Destroyers would need to focus on a few or one point to hammer the station and break its "crust" as you suggested. Once the Death Star has a substantial hull breach, the combined firepower of even 5 Super Star Destroyers would be enough to devastate the stations structural integrity. Bombers could also be deployed since the Death Stars fighter wing would have been taken out to further the damage and render the station combat ineffective or even destroy it entirely. Alternatively about 20 of the Super Star Destroyers could park right in front of the Death Stars main weapon and, using imperial knowledge, disable the weapon allowing the Super Star Destroyers to get in even closer and make their turbo lasers even more effective.

Around 4:30 it was mentioned that the Death Star has minimal shields. This obviously isn't cannon but in Rogue Squadron II during the Death Star level the first thing you do is blow up towers that are projecting a shield. I thought I'd mention this because you can see the same towers being blown up in the movie. Perhaps this is why the fighters are capable of causing damage with their strafing runs.

I'm sure it was a legends story but as yet it hasn't been contradicted by anything Disney has put out (we'll see what happens in the solo solo film) so if I'm remembering it right he was training at the Imperial Academy to become an officer when he witnessed the treatment of the Wookiee's and that started to make him doubt his decision to join the empire.

I wonder if full power Death Star laser could go through multiple super star destroyers. Like I’m sure there would be some behind others. Still only a couple or a few at a time, but still. I also think the Death Star could park itself beside a planet and have the planet at its back, so the SSDs can’t flank it. Best they could do is form a cone in front of it

I would say that the SuperStar Destroyers could just park in polar orbits around the Death Star, and maneuver to stay out of the arc of fire of the super laser. If they all concentrated their fire on the focusing dish, I'm sure they could knock that out in relatively short order. The SSD's could probably then move further away from the Death Star, to a range where they could target the battle station, but where the Death Star would have a harder time hitting them, and where their shields would protect them from more of the impacts. Heck, they could even abandon a handful of the SSDs and park them broadside in orbit, to provide cover for a couple more SSD's, and then fight from a relatively safe position. If the SSD's concentrated all of their fire on a couple of points, they could pretty quickly punch through the decking and armor of the Death Star, and work their way into the core and the vulnerable areas of the guts of the battle station. I think both sides would do best to pick one specific target and concentrate as much firepower as possible on that one point. Both opponents are too big and well armored for a general distribution of firepower to have much of an effect
@OverlordMagos

I think the problem with the Deathstar shielding is that it was meant to stop capital ships and big energy shots but not starfighters because the designers thought that nobody in their right mind would send starfighters to fight a space station the size of a moon.

Your correct, although I think even then you give the super weapon to much credit, once the super star destroyers knew it was a threat, all they needed to do was keep their position out of it's arc of fire. Sure it might get lucky a couple times, but that's it. Even the other weapons on the death star are no real threat to the destroyers because, while there are a lot of them, they are spread around the entire circumference of the death star so very few would be able to fire at any destroyer at any given time, where the super star destroyers would be free to maneuver themselves into positions where the most turrets possible were able to fire on the death star. The only real thread to the super star destroyers would be the large number of fighters the death star could launch, so as long as the super star destroyer could deal with them, via it's own fighters and anti fighter weapons it would just be a question of how long it would take for them to either cause enough damage to the death star that it exploded, or to dig down far enough that they could target it's main power core directly to blow it it. I think even 10 super star destroyers would easily be able to take out the death star, it would just take longer, and with only ten it would be that much easier to stay out of range of it's main weapon. As for star destroyers destroying a planet, I think was it was referring to was the death star exploded the planet, where star destroyers don't do that, they just destroy the surface crust of the planet, turning it into a unlivable molten slag but the planet itself would still be intact. I've long felt that the empire should have invested the resources they put into the two death stars into super star destroyers. They could have make executor class SSDs the center of each fleet, with a few smaller fleets with eclipse and other "speciualty" SSDs at the center moving to support whichever main fleet might as needed.
@Darkestedge1
@Darkestedge1 7 лет назад
I can't help but feel you missed out on the very powerful tractor beams that the deathstar would have which would be able to slow or even stop the many of the SSD's allowing the Deathstar to maneuver it self into a position to bring its turbolasers and superlaser to bear on them.
