This is the first official revenue train, for the recently restored, Rio Grande Southern, #20. The locomotive is a coal burning, three foot gauge, 4-6-0 type locomotive built by Schenectady Locomotive Works in 1899 for the Florence and Cripple Creek. It was last run in 1951. This is one of Americas longest and most costly steam locomotive restorations taking over 14 years and costing over $1.5 million dollars. The locomotive is now home at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado where it will be steamed up on special occasions, and run on about 1/3 of a mile of circle track.
The locomotive looked like it just came out of the factory this day. The locomotive performed very well with no issues to be seen or heard. Passenger trains were pulled first followed by some freight runs. Despite the steep 4% grade near the station, I did not see the locomotive slip wheels which is a real rarity for that location. Finally running, it's awesome. 14 years for the restoration, it's really a long time, but it's worth it. The garden railway is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

It was a long and expensive restoration but this locomotive will be good for a long time to come. Considering it's 121 years old we are lucky to see it running in any condition.

I'm glad a bunch of other historic vehicles were there with RGS 20 on its first excursion I'm surprised the entrance crossing got new gates, but the wigwag still doesn't swing
@travelingtom923
@travelingtom923 4 года назад
No although some volunteers give the wig wag a good push when the train comes and it swings enough times by momentum for the train to go by.

Just a curiosity, what's it's max speed ordinarily, also would it still run well burning wood?
@r.c.r.rproductions8462
@r.c.r.rproductions8462 3 года назад
Probably no more than 40 mph. Realistically, most likely 30mph. And as for wood burning, it’s airflow design is better suited for coal, but with a different stack, grates, and smokebox and firebox, it would probably run on wood just fine.

How long were you a conductor? What year to what year? And where did you operate? Do you miss it? And why did you stop?
@travelingtom923
@travelingtom923 4 года назад
A little over a year. Around 2000-2001. Seattle/Portland, OR. I do not miss it, and would not go back to a Class one railroad. Smaller railroads are ok and I was working as a passenger car mechanic up in Anchorage a few years ago. I stopped because there is better companies to work for. The big Class one railroads are meat grinders. Few people want to work for them nowdays. Maybe I will do a video in the future about the pros and cons or working for the railroads.
