The Legend of Heroes/Kiseki/Trails is celebrating its 20 year anniversary today and has a lot of games. But which game is the best in the series? Since I just finished playing through all of the games from Trails in the Sky FC through Trails Into Reverie, it's time to create the definitive tier list for the series. my ranking is as follows: (have not played Crimson Sin yet) CS4> Sky SC> Azure> Daybreak> Reverie> CS3> Zero> Sky the 3rd> CS2> Sky FC> CS1> Nayuta I realize quite a bit of my ranking is controversial, but here's my more detailed explanation: I've played every game here at least twice except for Nayuta and Daybreak (some of them I played way more than twice, like Sky FC which I played over a dozen times for sure) CS4 is my favorite game despite me acknowledging the faults it has and the reason is mainly because: it has SO MANY hype moments, when I booted it up for the first time and got to control Estelle, Joshua, Lloyd, Elie and Renne I immediately knew this game was gonna be gold, and it for sure delivered on that front. how I discovered Trails was watching a youtuber play through Sky FC back in like 2015, and I fell in LOVE with Estelle as a character by watching their playthrough, Sky SC, is on a whole different level when it comes to both character and world building that every time I replay it (and I've done so quite a few times) I cry during the reunion scene Azure is peak, the ending is beautiful Daybreak I won't comment on more, other than saying that I really loved the cast Reverie has some of the most fun gameplay in the series, even if its story falls flat on its face for most of it, C route is still peak CS3 new class 7 steal the show and the ending was brutal since I was one of those who had to wait for CS4 to release more than a year later Zero has an insane cast of characters and the story is amazing, all scenes around Renne's story had me in tears. The 3rd's story and the doors are a thing of beauty for the most part, but the repetitiveness of combat was the thing that I didn't enjoy too much hence why it drops so far down CS2 is a bit sluggish, but the endings are all worth it: Infernal Castle and Reverie Corridor both had me in tears Sky FC despite making me fall in love with this series cannot go higher due to its big drawbacks (gameplay being the main one) CS1 too repetitive and the cast doesn't interact much with each other, just with Rean (the only ones that do interact are Fie with Laura and Emma and then Jusis and Machias, this game also introduced the worst duo of characters) finally Nayuta: I won't say much, but I didn't love this game like I loved every "true" trails game, and I don't see myself replaying it

Good to see some love for CS3 & 4, I think they're really decent and often get trashed on. I know CS1 isn't popular because it's so simple, but as far as setups and intros to the characters go, I still think it's a decent C-tier game! Great video :D

Regarding Reverie, while it's true that C had a great route Rean however was definitely the best one both in term of pacing and tension. Regarding Rean, he definitely had the best character arc which Reverie managed to end it in a pretty clever way, anyone who did understand Rean's character knows what i'm talking about. And finally...Lloyd's Route being totally lackluster both in term of protagonist and story. (I know Lloyd's character isn't anything to write home about but at least Reverie should have done something interesting with him instead of repeating the same events azure already did )

I actually liked CS1 much more than CS4. 😅 This is probably because I didn't really get into Sky at first and played CS1 instead, where I was immediately hooked. It feels so nostalgic after playing all four Cold Steel games. Trails to Azure is probably one of my favorite JRPGs of all time, it's peak. My ranking: S Tier: Azure A Tier: Sky 3rd, Sky SC, CS3 B Tier: Zero, CS1 C Tier: Sky FC, CS2 D Tier: CS4 (haven't played Reverie and Kuro yet)

Glad to be following you on your journey haha, yours is an interesting case as i believe yours is the first generation of fans who can experience the series in chronological order playing the official translation. I guess the question is, is the list comparing trails games other trails games or games? Coldsteel 1 is a mediocre trails game but its still an above average jrpg, atleast in my eyes haha Heres to the next... what 5 more games i believe?

@@TheTheoLogan898 I played the cold steel saga rather quickly. CS 4 had the exact same beats as CS 2, from the tests of strength to being saved by Olivert again in the ship in the exact same circumstance as CS 2. I didn't believe for a second any death that happened either because death is cheap in the CS saga. I won't be surprised if characters that died in this saga return later for what ever reason.

I think I agree with most of your tier list. I don't think I'll be able to put any game on a D tier. If I had to rank the Legend of Heroes games (including the original 5 games), it would be something like: S Tier: Sky SC, Azure, CS3, Reverie and Daybreak A Tier: Tear of Vermillion, Song of the Ocean, Sky FC, Zero and CS4 B Tier: Moonlight Witch, Sky 3rd, Nayuta, CS2 and Daybreak 2 C Tier: Legend of Heroes 1, Legend of Heroes 2 and CS1 Actually, If I had to do a D tier it would be for Akatsuki no Kiseki and Northern War. Those are terrible games... in fact, Northern War would probably be lower than that. And just because I love it, Tokyo Xanadu is easily an A Tier game as well.

@Natreg44

@@TheTheoLogan898 not trully connected, yet. There are a lot of references to terminology used in Trails, and Magical Alissa is a franchise in Tokyo Xanadu. The backgrounds in the Reverie corridor used for the Magical Alissa mini-game were from there. Certainly play Daybreak first, but TX does deserve more credit. It may even be... as good as Persona :D (not really, but it's closer to Persona than any of the Trails games).

Id agree most of the ranking but tbh cs was my intro to the series so i do have a soft spot for it٫ i will agree it has its parts where its not as good as the others. Cs4 hands down is my fav out of it and 3 is good as well٫ i will say while 2 had good parts for me it felt really long and drawn out while 1 while being slow also was a pretty good intro for me. everything rank wise i pretty much agree with :)

This is almost as close as I've seen someone to my personal ranking, with the only difference being that my enjoyment of CS4 seemed to be less than yours... and maybe my Reverie and Sky FC enjoyment was higher. S: Sky SC, Sky 3rd, Azure, Reverie A: Zero, CS3 B: Sky (it's kinda right between B and A), C: CS2, CS4 (Besides extending way too much, the "fake death" thing became way, way too overused... and I kinda prefered the "bad ending" (a bit because of the same thing)... good thing Reverie touched on that. It did have some really cool moments though, and should've had more New C7) D: CS1 Of course, I'm not gonna comment on them much, but I will say I have Kuro 1 as an S (Van is amazing) and Kuro 2 is likely a B for me.

For me, FC > CS3 > Zero > CS1 > Third > Azure > Reverie > SC > CS2 > CS4. The cast in Cold Steel is pretty big but it never felt like it to me since they split the game up into field studies where only a small set of that cast is fleshed out at a time. My favorite part of trails is exploring and learning about the world and the characters that inhabit it (more so than the main plot) so games that focus more on that tend to be ones I like. I totally understand why that isn't a popular opinion though. I think it's cool how trails has something for everyone!

S Tier- Sky SC, Cold Steel 4 A Tier- Azure, Zero, Reverie, Sky 3rd, Cold Steel 3 B Tier- Cold Steel 2, Cold Steel 1 C Tier- Sky FC I truly don't know if SC or Cold Steel 4 is my favorite. SC is the more balanced experience in terms of enjoyment and I can't think of any major flaws. Sky FC sets the stage for this game so well it's honestly incredible. Every character you partied with have compelling arcs, and Estelle and Joshua are still the best love story in trails. Cold Steel 4 has more low point in comparison, mostly with the bloated middle game, but the highs hit harder in Cold Steel 4 and are some of my favorite moments in the series. Watching all the characters from all the games come together avenger style is an experience no other video game has replicated for me, and makes this game truly unique. Zero is the best first game of the 3 arcs without a doubt, and the Crossbell arc itself is the most consistent experience of the 3 sagas as well. The party is also the best in the series. This is probably because unlike Sky and Cold Steel, there is very little in terms of party swapping. The characters are together all the time, and that allowed them to develop some great chemistry in the process. The thing keeping them out of S tier is that staying solely in Crossbell City for 2 entire games began to wear on me, some of the plot element in Azure towards the end didn't jive with me, mostly that the mastermind just gives up after discussing with Lloyd and team, and while I like Lloyd, I found him the least compelling of all the main characters. Reverie and Sky 3rd and are the best games in the series when it comes to gameplay. They are a carnival of Trails, with all the mini games you got to play along the way, and being able to use almost every character you have met in the previous games with the most powerful items available gives them a uniquely flexible and engaging experience where you get to experiment with many characters and builds. Reverie has the better gameplay, while 3rd has the better story and I find the Doors more compelling. Cold Steel 3 introduce New Class 7, and they are truly the highlights of the game, along well as the new game engine. Altina is my favorite from the class. I believe she has one of the most compelling characters arcs in all the games, and watching her grow her own personality and sense of self was awesome. This games big weakness in my opinion was it became way to formulaic. Go to new area, get jumped by Ouroboros, try to summon valimar, "that won't be necessary". Cold Steel 1 and 2 were the first 2 games I completed in the series. They are the games that developed my appreciation of the series. They have some major flaws that stand out after play the other games though. Original class 7 feels the least united out of all the parties in the series, and basically just orbit Rean. Some party members have very little in the way of character arcs as well (Elliot, kinda Machias), or aren't explored more till Cold Steel 3/4 (Emma, Gaius). Also I will never forgive Falcom for making the Nord Highlands. Still, these games have some of my favorite ost's in the series, and I really enjoyed the school setting. Sky FC was the first trails game I tried to play, and I dropped it twice. I didn't really 'get' trails when I tired to play this game, and wasn't able to appreciate it until after Cold Steel 1 and 2. Large portions of this game are spent without a full party, the stakes are incredibly low until the final act, and it was the slowest of any Trails game in my opinion. Also having a surprise encounter occur because a monster walking into the back of the party line in the overworld always irritated me. However, we also have Estelle and Joshua, who have some of the best dynamics in the series, and the game does a phenomenal job of setting up Second Chapter. This game walked so Sky SC and 3rd could soar.

I think the low stakes and calm slice of life turn based rpg made FC probably my favourite game in the franchise to be honest. There was a calm sincerity to it and the only time upped the anti was towards the end. I don't think I've played anything like the 1st game. I'm not sure I get your cold steel 3 placement, characters are good but I think this game has the blandest dungeons in the entire series and there was no big twist in 3, just a lot of cool crossovers from zero and sky.
@LordofLowes
@LordofLowes 8 дней назад
@@logiclunacy606 Sky FC is definitely the most slice of life so I can see how people would like it. For Cold Steel 3, I would definitely say it's the worst game in A tier, but I think it differentiates itself enough from Cold steel 1 and 2 to be above them I prefer new class 7 to old, the graphics are a massive improvement, I loved the crossover events, and i think what it lacked in plot twists it made up for in tension. Rean's slowly losing control of his powers, learning about bridcage in crossbell, the ramping up border crisis, the Phantasmal Blaze plan close to it's conclusion with no knowledge of what the goal is. You can feel the good guys slowly losing the strategic game and you just know it's gonna end badly, and it does. The tension turns to horror in the Grail as everything that could go wrong does. I have my gripes with it but there is some more detail in why i put it in A.
@logiclunacy606
@logiclunacy606 8 дней назад
@jakelowe3762 I kinda saw Rean loosing control of his ogre mechanic as an excuse to nerf Rean, at least during the early game because the ogre power is admittedly kinda busted. I personally think its the weakest story for me.... Crow coming back just out of blue was just kinda odd and it really highlighted how no one ever seems to die in this series. New class 7 is pretty decent, I'm not sure if I prefer them over the original class 7 but they're fine. Bosses were all really great in 3, except that one dragon boss that stunlocks your entire party and you have to fight it with 3 different parties so being immune at least for me was impossible apart from the selection of characters I gave immunity to. I honestly got lucky in that fight.
@LordofLowes
@LordofLowes 8 дней назад
@@logiclunacy606 I think the justification for Crow's 2 revivals were sufficently justified to not be terrible, but I would say him dying at the end of cold steel 4 would have been more satisfying. While Rean losing control of the ogre power is definitely a nerf, I always felt that the state of his power mirrored the state of his life, which i appreciated. In 1 he is lost and scared to live his life, which mirrors his fear of his power. In 2 he gains confidence in himself which gives him the ability to control his power. In 3 he loses control of his life and falls into a downward spiral which matches with the loss of control in his power, and in 4 he hits the bottom of said spiral and falls into despair, which matches him being consumed by his power. Speaking of Spirals, Spirals of Erebos is one of the best songs in the series, and my personal favorite for final dungeon themes.

@jakelowe3762 I personally found him planting a fake body in place of his really buyable, especially since I saw the guy with my own eyes die. It's the same with bloody Shirley, in Azure she gets sawn in half but somehow she's just alive. My main complaint is more to do with not permanently killing characters off. I can't remember what my favourite track is but I find falcom tracks to always be a win especially Ys8 which is my favourite so far.
