THE DELTA FORCE (1986) Revisited: Action Movie Review

When terrorism strikes and Americans abroad are in danger, the Delta Force comes to the rescue. Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin save an oddball cast of seventies character actors in this weird but slick disaster film/ action flick mashup - so jump on your rocket-powered motorbike, feather your mullet and get ready to ride with The Delta Force!
If you've been watching Reel Action or any of our series here on JoBlo Originals, you've undoubtedly heard of The Cannon Group. In the 1980s, Cannon, run by Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, were the specialists in B-action movies. Made on the cheap, these films had higher production values than other exploitation movie machines from that era, such as the non-stop onslaught of action coming from Italy or the Philippines. They were real movies and flicks like their Ninja trilogy, including Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja and Ninja III the Domination, plus the American Ninja series, of course, Breakin', made a lot of money for comparatively little overhead.
Yet, in the mid-eighties, the Go-Go Boys, as they were less than affectionately called by the Hollywood press, had bigger aspirations, signing on directors like Jean-Luc Goddard and John Cassavetes to make art films. Some of these movies, such as Andrei Konchalovsky's Runaway Train, were actually good - like LEGIT good, not "good for a Cannon movie."
One such film is Menahem Golan's The Delta Force, from 1986, which was one of Cannon's biggest films to date. Based on the hijacking of TWA Flight 847, the film melds effective docudrama style with over-the-top Hollywood fantasy, as the second half of the film imagines a Delta Force raid that never happened and seems loosely based on the real-life Raid on Entebbe, which Golan himself made a film out of called Operation Thunderbolt.
Join us as we look back at The Delta Force on this edition of Reel Action, which is written and narrated by Travis Hopson, edited by EJ Tangonan, and produced by Chris Bumbray and Adam Walton.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid when my parents took me to the theater. I was about 10 years old and really terrorized by the opening moments and all the violence but once Chuck Norris and his Delta Force went in and start kicking ass I loved it. As a kid growing up in the '80s action is where it was at.

Silvestri's score is amazing for this film. It's one of those tunes you hear then will be humming it all day, lol. I also loved the ending where the hostages are greeted by family, friends, cheering crowds and the media while Delta Force carry their wounded to a waiting airplane and leave quietly, almost forgotten, job done.

LOVE this movie. This and Code Of Silence are my go to Chuck Norris movies. Don't care about the jingoism. It just entertained the hell out of me. Gimme bad-ass good guys killing lame-ass bad guys with tons of stunts and explosions any day of the week and I'm happy :)

MAN, I love Canon movies. This and Code of Silence are my favorite Chuck Norris movies, BUT Lone Wolf McQuade is above them all, IMO, the soundtrack just gets me every time I watch it.

In my opinion, back in the day, Chuck did a fair share of fairly decent action flicks, despite not a lot of people wanting to give him credit for them; but I totally agree with you, his best has to be Lone Wolf McQuade, to this day, one of my absolute favorites from that era (wonderful cast as well: David Carradine, Barbara Carrera, L.Q. Jones).

The Delta Force were a highly classified unit, until the Tehran hostage rescue attempt. The helicopters that carried them crashed mid flight. Now,the military learned and now have Special Forces pilots. But the really top secret unit,is the CIA's SAD unit, which stands for Special Activities Division. That unit is made up of Special Operations soldiers from other Spec Ops units. There're not widely known and their operations aren't either.

It's a disservice to call out Lee Marvin's last role like that as being, "Too frail." I'm sure most people don't know that Lee Marvin was a Marine in WWII, having participated in 21 landings in the Pacific, wounded twice at Saipan, was 1 of 9 to survive from his company, and spent 13 months in the hospital recovering from his wounds. Considering the real Charlie Beckwith's attitude, I don't think there was a better actor that could have been cast for the role. RIP to a legend and hero!

I love the movie, and I've loved it since I was a kid, but looking at it as an adult it seems like such an oddball movie. On one hand, a good part of it is hardcore action, completing with the rousing Delta Force score, that approaches camp. On the other hand, much of what takes place on the plane, and the death of Pete, is very serious, somber, and almost too intense for the other stuff we see. It's like they had two different scripts to two different films and decided to blend them together. I'll give this to Norris - whenever he does something cliche' in an action film, like go back to get someone, defy an order, or hunt down a bad guy, it never feels like a cliche' because of him. He plays his roles so straight and laid back that I think of him more like a discount Clint Eastwood than a Stallone. And I mean that as a compliment. I would have liked to have seen Lee Marvin in the Robert Vaughn role, and Vaughn in the Marvin role. Robert Vaughn was such a great actor, and in excellent shape for his age when this film was made. He would have better suited the role.

You should have mentioned that although Charles Bronson turned down the Lee Marvin role he played the same Lee Marvin commanding officer character in the OTHER Operation Thunderbolt / Operation Jonathan ( Real life Israeli Long Range hostage rescue ) THE RAID ON ENTEBBE. I thought it was superior to Golans Operation Thunderbolt as it is based on the same real life Israeli IDF raid in Uganda. In RAID ON ENTEBBE he played real life Genral Dan Shamron. Stephen Macht played real life hero Colonel Jonathan Netanyahu ( brother of former Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu ) and hero of the raid. James Woods is also in the movie.
