The Depreciation Continues | More Used EV Bargains
A Long Range Tesla Model Y has never been cheaper with a huge discount over the new price but there are also great used EVs to be had for less than £10k. It;s never been easier to get into a used electric car (if you want to of course). We also take a look at a couple of high end cars like the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-Tron GT which can now be had for a fraction of their new price.

I have owned a Chinese electric car, Dacia Spring, for two years, which cost me about half of the cheapest petrol car (fixed 8,000 euros), and which consumes around 11 kWh/100km, i.e. the equivalent of 1.5l of gasoline/100km. In a maximum of 5 years, the cost of the car will be amortized only from the difference in the price of fuel, not to mention the almost complete lack of maintenance (no oil changes, filters, distributors, spark plugs, etc.).

I need to buy a car this April when my 3 year lease goes back. I fancied an MG4, but they were only released about 14 months ago and I think they will be one of those models that will depreciate quite a lot in the first 3 years once they are established. I have just saw one 1 mile away from me for under £20,000, with only 3000 miles on the clock, that is a great sign for people looking to buy a used EV this year

I’m a company car EV driver like many, but have seen the leasing quotes rocket on our company scheme for some models. I drive a Peugeot e208 currently (great small EV) and my fixed cost is £400 a moth (including everything - insurance, maintenance etc). Same car 18 months on would cost me £570! That’s undoubtedly due to the frankly crap residuals on the Peugeot and many others, particularly from Stellantis that are way overpriced new. The market is just all over the place at the moment as more EV’s come onto it and will probably take a couple of years at least to stabilise. I might not take another new company one (18 months time) and go for a used EV then, as something between£12K and £15k that’s basically a new EV would be very tempting.

I discovered your channel around Xmas time when I was sick with the flu. I decided I might get myself an electric car. You basically talked me out of it. Not being able to home charge it would cost me double to do the same mileage as my hybrid. Plus the time sat waiting. Not to mention the probable tax they’re going to introduce to cover the £35 billion revenue loss from fuel tax. if you think that’s not right look at several states in USA where it’s happening. Texas started charging $200 a year in September, it’s coming soon here.

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru it’s going to be a mess as they try to punish ICE drivers to encourage them off the road. I say that because many just won’t be able to go electric. But you do know ev owners will end up paying as much as ice owners do now, enjoy the cheaper period while you can .
@DefinitelyNotAGuru
@DefinitelyNotAGuru 8 месяцев назад
@somnambulist7705 it will be expensive in future for sure, it’ll always be cheaper to run than an ICE car in future though. Any new taxes will likely apply to all and synthetic fuels will more than likely be for the well off. I’d have no worries running a petrol car for a while yet though. EV for me had several advantages over pure fuel costs but they’re not for everyone (yet). I’m certainly not trying to convert anyone, I don’t know why anyone cares what anyone else drives to be fair and wish more were the same.

At the stage the battery goes caput the car is probably worth a pittance anyway. People make a lot of noise about the 8 year warranty but engine and gearbox warranty with most cars is 3-5 years, if that goes caput it’s a very similar cost quite often. Many cars out there I wouldn’t buy at 4 years old to be honest.

SOH is pretty much bulletproof on anything but early Leaf. Those 2018 Leafs had good BMS but they still have degradation in extreme climates. In the UK expect a Nissan Leaf 40kwh to lose a few percent in first few years, but you should get over 10 years (150k miles) and over 70% SOH within this time. Expect better with EVs with active BMS rather than the Leafs passive arrangement.
@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 8 месяцев назад
You get the battery checked by using an OBD via the car's diagnostic socket. This can provide you with a print-out of the battery's state of health in percentage terms.... Some of the newer Kia's and Hyundai's can show the battery SOH (state of health) within their integral software menus...... Any reputable dealer should be able to carry out a battery SOH test on request on a used EV
@Brian-om2hh
@Brian-om2hh 8 месяцев назад
@@HairyCheese That said, the Leaf is probably one of the least costly ( in EV terms) electric cars to have the battery pack repaired or reconditioned, due to it's relative (again, in EV terms) simplicity..... With the higher mileage cars my worry is the dealers are treating them the same as ICE cars but it's completely possible an EV will last twice as long mileage wise as the average ICE. So now maybe the prefect time to buy a second hand EV

On Autotrader, there are just 6 EVs with more than 150k miles on them in the UK. So EV longevity is not yet proved! I have personally run 4 patrol and diesel cars to over 150k miles.😊

@@robk1003 a local airport taxi firm I used to use got 400k from a Tesla Model S and it still has >70% battery. Tesla swapped it for a new one as they wanted to do loads of tests on it.

The market speaks for itself..EV cars are not the way forward. Government should have moved to hybrid first, then let the technology have the time to find the true alternative

Well, the market seems pretty set in stone at the moment. Most manufacturers won’t be making anything but EVs within a few years so I guess at the moment they do appear to be the future, however inconvenient that may be. Used fossil cars will be around for years to come though so perhaps that should ease some of the woes of the naysayers.

Not really sure how you missed the current used bargains on the E-C4 and the E-2008….

Maybe they weren’t current when I made the video? Or maybe I didn’t consider them particular bargains? Ever consider that? No.

As if the Taycan or Etron GT were worth 100 grand in the first place, 50 grand is still too much, twice the price of a Q4 etron! It's a scam, the new prices are irrelevant, the cars are priced supply and demand, "we're losing so much on every car we make" is BS, we've been getting ripped off for years.
