Hey, you should consider making a video about the production of One Piece because holy hell, even the less important episodes of the series started to look amazing at this point with having an amazing production management. How they can keep this quality despite it being a weekly show?
@Jekiterio
@Jekiterio Месяц назад
I have to disagree to some degree, while the animation has more flow it has introduced a lot of other issues like perspective and characters being off model, there is barely any quality control in a lot of those episodes. You can often tell its a freelancer doing a shot and there is a lack of cohesiveness style, suddenly you have a fully 3d cgi shot and in another scene its super low details. If I look back at some of the old One piece episodes it had sense of consistency and the drawings were more accurate to the manga, nowadays they put so much effects on to make luffy seem like he is Goku which is stupid. Also the show is not weekly, it takes several breaks and is done in batches (which means it was worked on months ago, ergo preview of next episode).
@erwinsmith6226
@erwinsmith6226 Месяц назад
@@Jekiterio I guess you havent watched pre timeskip one piece episodes in a while, its so uncosistent that you cant even tell how the original designs look for some characters like robin and zoro. Honestly after watching mha s7 e2 i noticed some of these issues as well ,it was an action heavy ep and it was great but they were some still frames and some inconsistencies with the art. Of course it was only a few issues, and i can give it a pass but i am worried how it will turn out in later episodes since it is confirmed there will be 21 ep in total.

@Situpx
@Situpx Месяц назад
People don’t want to open up Pandora’s box and I see it now. I get you only wanted to do a 8-10 minute video but this issue can go on for hours upon hours. I see a lot of personal feelings are involved in this industry. I feel imo, some of these “ free lancers “ are cool with the mangaka..so certain shows get that (special treatment). When you do research you have to wonder what these free lancers have in common, (action shonen) right? MHA, JJK, Mob, DS, Dandadan, Heavenly Delusion, CSM, Frieren, OPM, AOT, etc Free lancers can either make or break a show and that’s the truth. The industry constantly keeps promoting Shonen as well and not enough of other genres. I get what you saying but it’s a bigger hole that nobody is talking about or scared to talk about. I’ve been watching anime for years my whole life so it’s sad to see it going downhill like this. I can go on more about the industry issues but that’s 2 much typing but imma say this and exit. I’ve stated that ( free lancers ) can make or break a show. Example: Oblivion Battery(Baseball) Tv series. 2020 Mappa Version 1 2024 Mappa Version 2 There’s your answer as to why Free lancers play a big role in the inconsistency of anime nowadays. Watch those 2 versions and you’ll see what I’m talking about. End of the day, Industry is rigged and I guess it’s not about money because if that’s the case… high selling mangas should be getting top tier adaptations.

I'm still confused by the meaning of the word "2nd key animator" According to definition second key animator would be someone who would draw a cleaner version of a rough LO, But in a dong chang video he said 2nd key is when you trace over corrections of directors, What makes it more difficult is animators participating on Twitter occasionally using the word "genga" And "2nd key" for basically the same thing
@-MankoMan
@-MankoMan Месяц назад
Second KA is indeed someone who would draw a cleaner version of the rough LO, but the Dong Chang definition is not entirely inaccurate. Let's take the ideal Second KA scenario: Mob psycho 100 season 1 finale. Yutapon couldn't clean all of his LO. For Second KA, Norifumi Kugai, Gosei Oda, Kenichi Fujiwasa, Nobuhiro Muto and even Shingo Natsume came in. In this case, the Sakkan just needs to sit and watch, because the people doing second KA are industry leading Key animators themselves. Now consider what's happening in the industry currently. Someone with no experience put into 2nd KA role, having to depend on Sakkan for KA reference and correction afterwards as well. Multiple 2nd KA working on the same cut-> dependant on tracing over Sakkan's art-> art looks obviously traced with the timing of original KA destroyed-> Melt, broken art, etc. ATP on Twitter if an animator says they did LO and genga that means they animated their scene, but if they just say genga it might as well mean they only did 2nd KA.

I always appreciate your takes. You give a unique perspective on the industry and cover a lot of things that most people don't. Side note, an older anime I adore that does the opposite direction/composition vs. sakuga formula (aside from a few moments where they pulled out all the stops). Revolutionary Girl Utena's animation is for the most part pretty mediocre, but they make up for it by making almost every shot visually interesting even without a lot of movement. An easy example is from episode 2, with a walking animation between Utena and her friend Wakaba. They could have just done some standard shot above the waist as the images bounce across the screen, but instead they tell a little visual story with the cuts as Wakaba gradually unloads more of her things onto Utena until she's being carried. I love little details like that to make a show more interesting. But I'm also pretty sure they saved most of their animation budget for like 5 or 6 key scenes in the entire 39 episode show. And it was entirely worth it.

considering there’s about 60 new seasonal anime this season, like 20 continuing series from seasons prior, 10 movies and a few one off ONA like Sand Land or T P Bon, it’s not crazy to say that, as you say, there’s just too much currently being produced. and the fact that at least 20 of those new seasonal shows are your typical generic isekai slop, it puts into question WHY the industry is like this currently. and my answer is the industry is currently in this weird little era which is similar to how hollywood was obsessed with super hero’s and especially shared universes over the last decade. whether it made sense or not, every studio had one. and i feel like the same thing is happening in japan. and it’s reaching its breaking point. both for saturation, and quality. i know Isekai and generic fantasy is extremely popular in japan, but surely it must give at one point right?

Just a reality of globalizing of work and anime no longer being a niche product which now makes more money outside of Japan than in. So there are incentives to change the way things work in production. Nothing wrong with remote work and not visiting the studio. Training can still be done properly. Proper training is not happening because, like work in all industries, they are looking for people who can match all the job requirements for little pay rather than training people from ground-up. This is a trend everywhere!

Honestly this reminded me why i dropped the new bleach series, a whole lot of nothing was happening outside of plot, things felt stiff and took longer than needed. My favorite shows are thr ones able to convey things through visuals but it seems most of the time they have to make up visual story telling with voice acting ehich in my opinion only gets you so far by itself. Every anime has it down down moments but it seems the newer anime for the most part have them more frequent and/or last longer leaving them more noticable. I could be wrong, im not a seasonal watcher, i only come around for the odd or great shows though films are preforable but that what it seems to me in the few seasonals i have seen
@Jekiterio
@Jekiterio Месяц назад
Did we watch the same anime? There was a lot of character development through it and changes, even symbolism hinted through visuals with great forshadowing. Stiff animation? You could say this about any anime at some point, stop being an sakuga gooner and think everything needs to be mappa or ufotable also "longer than needed" when its adapting 4-5 chapters or more on each episode, it was fast paced and right on the point not leaving you hanging (if you think this is slow you are not going to handle watching older animes). Your consern seems very nitpicking, but each to their own I guess, however the next cour (3) is going to be different and have a lot better animation as its going to be adapted in to a new studio focusing on quality.

With all this being said, I think anime is better than how it was in the 2000s with so many weekly anime pioneered by studio pierrot. Just endless shows being produced weekly with passable animation, poor schedules, and a few decent cuts of animation every 50 episodes. Let's not forget the filler as well. Say what you want about things now, but the seasonal model most studios have adopted is a lot better for everyone it seems

there was always production issues since the 90s theres no need to just blame the modern animes also toei is training new animators with akihiro ota

Toei is genuinely one of the few exceptions in the industry. they’re not perfect, no studio is, but the fact they literally work on like three shows (one isn’t even out yet but has been actively developed on for over two years and still has a few months of production left) shows that they have their shit together. since they’re the largest anime studio in japan currently and work on so little projects, this kinda makes sense. and they keep expanding. as you said, Ota is now doing classes to train animators in his spare time. their work flow and balance is incredible over there. there’s a reason Vincent Chansard said he would never want to work with MAPPA again but then signed a year long exclusivity deal to work with Toei starting next year, and has been basically only working for them for the last year anyway out of his own free will.

@cwega2463 Месяц назад
@@stolentoothbrush3492 Toei has four weekly shows currently, more than what i originally thought but much less than what you’re saying (outside of helping to develop western shows like miraculous ladybug with like 15 other companies). and they only have 8 total anime currently, with a few more coming. and considering they’re still the biggest studio in japan, it makes sense. but you are right they do make more episodes per year than any studio, three weekly series a year alone would be enough to do that lmao.

@@cwega2463Chansard signed a contract with Toei only because of the pay he would have got. For know it's a 1 year contract with the possibility of an extension( Toei wanted to make a longer term One,but Vincent forced for a shorter One). It wasn't revealed to me the total amount of Money,but this contract makes Chansard the most paid animator in Japan right now . Also Henry Turlow, the skilled american animator of Toei gets a FAR lager pay check than the average

I don't think PP's criticism was trying to imply that at all; he's simply pointing out that all the problems plaguing the industry and the tendency to focus on specific marketable aspects of animation, has exacerbated the compositing, perspective, and layout issues even more within modern times. This was never about claiming that these problems never existed in older eras of anime

Pretty much every old anime that got a remake or continuation, looked better in the old version. Spice and Wolf, Shaman King, hell, even FMA Brohood was very inconsistent and janky, with terrible cgi.

As if the tone of the situation is the same as the fucking holocaust or something. Anime isnt ass nowadays and in every era of anime there have been problems.
