Very sad story again Chris and Vicky. Poor Sarah to have suffered so much from migraines must have been very debilitating to live with them. So tragic that no one could help her. R.I.P. Sarah 🙏🙏🙏

I done this walk a few thousand times. Iv been in flaxmoss house when i was a kid. My mum was friends with the lady who lived there. We used to play out on the old railway line. There was an old signal left behind. All houses on that stretch now. I remember them knocking down the arch bridge. They used all the stone to build the steps that are there now. I used to walk past them everyday when i worked at Gregorys pine. Great video 👍

It makes you think of how many other people in history took their own lives due to inadequate/non existent medical care. Bless the hearts of those who fought for the Government Medicare/ Public Health system... It may not be perfect, but it does provide.

Hi Cathie, thanks for watching the video. As we all know, Victorian times was brutal, especially for the lower classes, but I honestly believe there are many many stories of people taking their own lives due to ill health etc. I'm thinking that there may be a story there - that of how the NHS came to being and what life was really like before we had such services like that! A step back into victorian times and some of the ways they looked after the ill.

I am surprised that you did not mention the fact that the lass and the owner of Flaxmoss died within 2 1/2 months of each other, I suspect that something might be afoot in this tragic (half) story. Excellent presentation from you both and professionalism to boot, thank you.

I think Samuel was very ill during this period from what I recall reading . Not sure what he was ill with, but he had been struggling with some form of ill health 🤔 you might have a good point though regarding possibly something untowards with Samuel and his maids death. The thing with this story though is that there was or is next to nothing printed in the local papers. And what was written was just copied and shared with other newspapers at the time.

Thanks Sue! We have a really interesting one we are currently writing up, this time it takes us over to Accrington and to a quite famous case that includes a 15yr old boy, accused of murder. He always maintained he was innocent and we 'think' we may have found something hidden away in newspaper reports which just might back up his claims. Hopefully a video will be coming this weekend.

Another sad tale. Poor Sarah must have been in a lot of pain. I temporarily suffered from Migraine after the birth of my daughter. Looking at her headstone I'm thinking her employer may have helped pay for it, considering her parents did not live locally. I don't know if I'm reading into this, but I just have a feeling there is more to this story than we will ever know.
@DaysofHorror
@DaysofHorror Год назад
I said the same when reading about this story in the old newspapers. I felt there was something perhaps a bit more to it. But the articles are few and far between with no follow ups. But its a strange way to go, drinking acid then trying to strangle herself.

Thanks for watching and commenting and the nice comments. The music, we try to find something that kind-of goes cap in hand with the subject material so you will notice a lot of sombre, slow building music in our videos. We are not into the loud, fast music and I dont think that kind of music would suit our style anyway. We have two interesting stories coming up, one which we have released the podcast to this afternoon (with a follow up video planned).

I just wish there was more to these kind of stories in the papers. Like in this story, it would have been good to find out where or how she procured the oxalic mix. That would have closed the case, but by not knowing, it makes it more a mystery I think.

This one took some doing as I was adimant her grave was on the opposite side of the graveyard. Luckily, a kind lady was bear the church who I think was a volunteer and she came back with a map of all the locations and the grave numbers. Poor Sarah's grave had a lot of moss covering the stone, so we missed it at first. Just glad we found her in the end 👍

@DaysofHorror
@DaysofHorror 7 месяцев назад
It is a family home ;-) But the house has passed through quite a few hands over the years. It always used to be owned by the wealthy mill owners back in the day but now just owned by the wealthy and not of any status here in Helmshore. I could be wrong about the status, but no-one ever talks about the owners like they did when the Turners or the Stotts lived there.

@DaysofHorror
@DaysofHorror Год назад
I'm thinking they probably did. I was sad to see the cross itself being separated from its base but from the looks of it, it wouldn't have been cheap at the time and for an ordinary housemaid to have had something like that back in those days, I'm thinking, as she was well thought of by the family, I think they probably paid for it.

Oxalic acid is used by carpenters and furniture restorers to lighten wood remove stains. This is particularly useful on old furniture to remove water marks from spillages usually caused by flower pots or tea cups put on polished furniture. I t is highly toxic to use and when restorers use it they wear masks and sometimes eye protection to make sure they dont breathe it in. Maybe being a housemaid she had ready access to this chemical in the cleaning products used. Apart from the distress caused by her headaches maybe there was something else which she was hiding. I am particularly thinking about the old very often used expression, "I have a headache. " this gave a lady an excuse to lie down or go to their private quarters without interference where they can have privacy and the opportunity to mull over something which is troubling them without someone pocking their nose into their business. Of course we will never really know and that is between herself and the Lord. But working in a place where the owners were so open minded, maybe she had nursed expectations which were far above her rank. Or maybe she had very bad devastating news from her family. There is an old adage in our language that says, "Lekker lag, Lekker huil" This means that so much laughing normally ends in tears. Another analogy is often a person may be smiling all the time but secretly they are dying inside and dont want others to know what is troubling them. If they showed their true feelings they would be more likely to get help and sympathy and a shoulder to cry on. Despite the fact that this lady was holding a position in a very open minded house in the end she was still in the lower rungs of society. Her mistress used her to pull jokes on people. We dont know the nature of these jokes and maybe these jokes could have been mean spirited which could point to a darker side of her mistresses character. Being forced to play mean spirited jokes on people could have been humiliating not only for the victim but the maid herself. Maybe she felt trapped in a situation where she had no recourse. Maybe the victims of these jokes were actually angry and held grudges against Sarah. I have heard that it was extremely difficult for young girls to get a position in a house as a maid and if they lost the position it was devastating to them. Maybe if she was actually very unhappy in the position and was sending money to her poor family in Wales she felt duty bound to continue in a position she heartily hated. If she decided that she was going to leave her employment and she feared a bad reference in those days such a thing would be catastrophic. It would mean that she was unlikely to get another job and this would lead to poverty and probably bavingbto go to the dreadful and dreaded workhouse. So many questions and possibilities. Lord Alone Knows. R.I.P. young lady.

Was Sarah allowed any time off her duties , and how many years or months Has she been working for Samuel and Emily, and did she know the local Area because you said none of the acid was missing from the stables, Did she know where to source the acid from, And what was the age range Of Samuel and Emily Children.And also you said Samuel suffered from a medical problem was that brought on by Sarah death and did it affect the Rest of family, you said it she was well liked and loved by everyone from Tom
@DaysofHorror
@DaysofHorror Год назад
Loads of questions I don't think we wil ever get the answers from, apart from ages of the children. She had been working for the family for just over 3 years. And by all accounts, no acid was missing from the stables when they went to check. Sarah must have therefore sourced it, possibly from the same people who supplied the Stott family? As for how Samuel died, all we know is he suffered a long illness before passing away but I'm sure I should be able to find out what illness this was if I have a scout through the old newspaper archives 👍
